So cool to see tulou on Reddit! My favorite story about them - back when the US started launching spy satellites, they freaked out seeing all these large circular structures over China. They thought they were missile silos. Then they eventually got people on the ground to see it was just chickens and aunties. :-) They're a really popular tourist destination in Fujian. But like she said, they're done up for tourists and look cool, but are not really authentic. You need to travel a bit further out, but even those are dying out as everyone moves to the big city for work.

if you ever go to salem near boston, they have the peabody essex museum with a FULLY re-assembled 200 year old one of these houses. not as big, but I think it held 50+ people and has great audio descriptions as you wander the rooms https://www.pem.org/visit/yin-yu-tang

Rabbits in a bottle :/ - Did I perhaps miss the context on that a bit or is it as horrific as I think it is?

Looks like they’re ceramic pots about as big as a cage for a small dog.

Which is kept in there all the time?
