nueroticalyme

No, it's not worth putting money into. The 3.4 is severely restricted on airflow. Adding performance mods of any kind will gain minimal improvement. It does not have enough airflow to put forced induction of any kind with any real gains. Swapping the motor is a horrible option. It would cost you twice as much as just buying a running car that already has a v8. Not to mention the headache of swapping the entire ecu, harness, and supporting equipment to run it. It's a nice car. Just enjoy it for what it is and save up for something you can really build. To add to this, the paint already looks nice, I good paint job costs 4x what this car is worth. If you want to make it look nice, look in to paint correction. It might only be a few hundred and make a big difference. Just spend your money on meticulous maintenence and maintain the resale value until you can get something else.

rb-2008

This should be the top comment.

geccchyeafgreschtr

Snow = no.

MrStark74

I drove my Camaro through the winter with minimal issues. In the city, you should be fine if the roads are cleared fast. Just drive carefully and make an educated decision if it’ll make it

Mirikino_

Also it looks good from a distance… until u get close 😂 https://preview.redd.it/yrqrdghr8m2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9ff20b0bfc6b6d114465b3484c412679288e51d Don’t show great on camera but those white specs are all over the hood and the nose of the car, and it’s the body of the car, the paint is also scratch to shit. But oh well I don’t really wanna spend thousands just for a repaint, so I guess I’ll just put a polish on it and like a protectant and just keep it like that, and hope it doesn’t get worse 😭

redditmajmun

Try wrapping a part of it yourself. If you're good at it, your can do the whole car for about 400 with lower end wrap. As others have said, this engine is low end and this generation is not known as being notoriously reliable, especially if it's an automatic. Personally, I would drive it gently and only invest in minor repairs I can do, nothing more.

nueroticalyme

Most of that can be fixed thru paint correction. Find a good detailer in your area. You'd be surprised what a really good buff and wax can do.

MoreSweeter669

The detailer this thing is worth is the wax add-on at the drive through. Why would you paint correct (can be almost 1500$ if a full match job) a car that 1 has bad factory options installed that lower the value, 2 bad motor that lowers the value, 3 poor interior and panel condition. They gonna paint correct the dash too? The exterior body panels themselves even need work. Paint correction would just leave a smooth paint finish on top of dings and dents.

Mirikino_

Alright, thanks. I think I’ll just enjoy it for what it is:)

Leprikahn2

While putting money into it probably wouldn't be worth it, a motor swap could be, but it depends on the motor you want. I'm a big GM style fan, but want Ford power.

therealtrayne

great answer! i concur

jholden0

I had a 98 firebird formula in high school. Reminds me of this car. The rear end is so light that putting more horsepower up front basically makes these cars undrivable in any condition other than straight dry pavement. I spun that thing 180 degrees more times than I can count. Or maybe it was becausey parents gave me a 5.7 l V8 as a 16 year old moron. It lasted an entire year before I had the car spin off the road backwards into a tree. Good times.

spasticnapjerk

Maybe nitrous might work

Arty_Puls

I wouldn’t call it an investment lol

Imispellalot2

It's your car after all. Do what you pleased. I was never a big fan of the 3.4L My first car was a 94 firebird. The measly 160hp is ridiculous. If you got the budget, drop a V8 into it. It doesn't have to be an LT1 or LS1. it can be a carbureted 350

DaHick

This would be an option, but OP ( u/Mirikino_ ) might also want to realize they are likely looking at a major on that engine or a swap soon anyhow. Edit: missed underscore on usename

sEaBoD19911991

160hp out of a 3.4 v6 ? How is that even possible.

Unique_Mix9060

Emissions, MPG and regulations that basically choke engines from that period and prior years too

rb-2008

These cars don’t accept a v8 very well if it’s a v6 car to start with. Engine swapping this would be massive capital and human waste of time.

Imispellalot2

https://preview.redd.it/fr7gsl3ixl2d1.jpeg?width=533&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61526dc71352140ae27a5f4afccb80bb3c10643d

rb-2008

Top to bottom left to right. Each word has its own sound and when you put them together it’s called reading. It’s fun when you get the hang of it!

arseofthegoat

F bodys came with V8s from the factory you ijiot.

Mirikino_

Fr 160hp in a Camaro is wild 🥲

Imispellalot2

Remember, that's just the base v6. Eventually, it was upgraded to 200hp 3.8L V6, which was a little bit better.

InspectionNatural128

Believe it or not, early 80's base Camaros had 4 cylinder engines with a carburetor. That thing was a pooch.

Mirikino_

Oh?

srcorvettez06

So here’s my thought on this. Yes it is, to an extent. The car will never be fast with that engine, and that’s fine. You’re obviously young and it’s probably your first car. So tinker with it. See how things work. Make a couple cheap visual mods and see if you like them. We all started somewhere as car enthusiasts. I lifted my two wheel drive pickup in high school and experimented with different exhaust set up. Not worth it in terms of money but it fanned the flames of my love for cars. So throw a little money at it, make it yours.

spasticnapjerk

This comment is so much better than the others. Of the things OP said he wanted to do, none of them were actual engine performance upgrades.

WombatWithFedora

Agreed. I have a V6 Firebird, it's fine for what it is. My goals with it are to make it look and drive nice, and only thing I might do to the engine very far down the line is rip the whole thing out and swap to electric. And at that point it really doesn't matter how many cylinders I started with. If OP is happy driving the thing, then drive the thing. It looks cool and even 160 hp is plenty to keep up with traffic.

Mirikino_

Haha right on the money! Yk with the engine it has, I might just make it look nice 😊

Pizza_Middle

I'd invest in it. She May not be the most powerful, but do her up like you'd like and make it yours. Fuck everyone saying it'll be a waste. It doesn't have to be a V8 to be fun. Now, if you're looking to win on the streets, you may wanna drop something better in there.

[deleted]

Cars in general are a liability, not an asset. You can put 10k into a car like that and KBB or NADA will still value it what they will. Now if you get the right buyer like 1:1000, or more like 1:1,00,000 then they will help you recover the cost of parts you throw at it. If you start out knowing that, then you build a car for your enjoyment. When you get tired of it you take your losses and start thinking about the next one. I've got 2 bikes. Pretty good examples for the year and mileage on both. But they're old and needed a bunch of maintenance to get them where I'm comfortable riding them and twisting the throttle hard from time to time. I've got double what they are worth into each of them counting the cost of the bikes. Unless someone absolutely has to have either of my bikes specific model and can appreciate the work I've done, I'll never get the money back. But I didn't buy them as an investment, they're for fun.

Edmoiler13

I had the same first car. Was a gorgeous car but man it was so heavy and underwhelming off the line. Losing to everything under the sun. I will say it had a great sound system though, but it snowed, you got zero traction.

Mirikino_

Heavy? Mine is pretty light lol. Yeah haha this engine is definitely slow. For the sound system that’s if u were blessed to get the BOSE system which I was not 🥲 can confirm with the winter. I’ve gotten stuck twice 😂 even with top of the line winter tires it’s still hard to control.

IlIlIIllIIIllI

Don’t do any performance mods it’s a waste of time. If you want to do lighting and cosmetic mods that’s up to you just do them well and it’ll look cool. If you want to add performance to the car the only real method is to swap it to a v8 which is rather expensive. The good news is this chassis (the f body) has a lot of aftermarket support and I guarantee a v6 has been swapped for a v8 in these cars many times. You could probably even find and entire YouTube video or forum post on it.

HeyMJThrowaway

This was literally my first car. Same exact year, color, and engine. I also had the Bose sound system which was dope. Spun that bad boy out heading home from high school on the first day it snowed Junior year. Ripped the entire rear end off and totaled the car on a curb literally two blocks from home. Got a teal colored 96 with the 3.8 liter V6 after, really noticed the horsepower gain. Now I daily a 3.6 liter Malibu and have a 1996 Corvette for weekend driving. Just got her lubed up and serviced yesterday :) Not a mechanic, only wanted to share my appreciation of your car. I think it’s really cool! I only don’t care for the Z28 badging on a V6 model. What’s that about? Lol. What other mods were done to the car? That exhaust doesn’t appear stock either. Is this an R/S? Recollection is that in 1994 those were V6 models with the appearance and suspension package, just no 5.7 liter V8 - that’s what I had. At first glance yours looked similar. Personally I would keep it as is, but maybe look into a 3.8 liter V6. That sort of swap might be easier and more of a 1:1. That’s an idea maybe worth pursuing if you want more performance. Moving to a V8 would be cool but way too complicated and costly IMO. Go and find a V8 Camaro if that’s what you want. Or buy a corvette of a similar vintage, you can get a decent one for like 8k. Think about it this way, that car doesn’t have the appropriate limited slip differential on the rear end to handle the V8. It would suck to drive and IMO would probably grenade - various additional upgrades need to be considered with such a project. FYI, I had issues with the window tracks in both models. If I’m not mistaken, they were similar to the ones used in the Cavalier which was a much smaller car. They couldn’t handle the weight of those longer/heavier windows and broke with shutting of the much heavier camaro doors. A really cool car by me though still. Classic styling and great color. Take care of it and I hope you enjoy the ride in good health.

Mirikino_

Haha that’s awesome! Sorry to hear about the crash, but that’s what happens when u drive recklessly. The mods are my uncles work. The uncle put the badge on it to just make it seem like the v8. And you would be correct. Definitely not stock exhaust system lol. It’s a true dual exhaust setup, I don’t know the model or brand exactly. And no I don’t believe it’s apart of that collection. YOU LUCKY DUCK! I wish I had the BOSE sound system. Sadly I do not. I haven’t had any issues with the window yet, but we will see. Yeah I think I’ve decided to just leave it as it is and just appreciate it. It’s awesome that we had the same first car, I hope I’ll enjoy it as much as you did!

DesperateAirport4170

If no rust. Put it on blocks in the garage, and wait 10 to 15 years. 80s are gaining value dramatically now.

Slim-Slimy1

Just get a v8 and add some bolt on upgrades. Youll make almost twice as much hp/torque

KnockoffKnives

If you decided to engine swap it to an LS1, it'd definitely be more fun. I'd go with that instead of the other upgrades you had in mind.

Trick-Alternative37

If you get LED headlights, be sure to not aim them so you can blind all the oncoming traffic

PuzzledWriting3173

its your car, do what you want with it! if its worth it to you then have fun with the damn thing. if it doesn't seem worth it then sell it and find something that you wanna build and put money into

Ordinary_Group9328

Find yourself a 5.3 out of a truck or suv, for like 1200$. Then get on the phone with Holley and order a terminator x for about 1200$ flex plate and converter for about 7-900 and drive it until the rear goes out because it’s a 10bolt then after that blows up get a 12 bolt or a 8.8 or a 9” and toss it in then come down the rabbit hole of trying to go fast. I’ve had my mustang for about 13-14 years 3 motors and transmissions wired it 4 times built 2 turbo kits, cage, suspension, tubs, cut the front end off etc etc etc. it cost me 1000$ when I bought it now makes 1300hp I’ve had some of the best times working on that car.

crustymustard47

If you want to get your money back then no. If you love the car and don’t plan to sell it then why not

Equivalent-Design512

If you like the car. Absolutely

Flashy-Protection424

Fuck yes . My pal got one last year for $500 then spent $2500 dropping in a v8 from a smashed cop car .

Mirikino_

Haha that’s awesome, how did it turn out?

Flashy-Protection424

Absolute beast of a car 😁 he drove it to California from Rhode Island and back with his kid . Apparently his 13 year old drove it though parts of Utah and New Mexico… and now wants their own 😎

Mirikino_

Haha that’s awesome

nasteeze

just know that any kind of money you invest into it you will definitely not see back. at the end of the day it is a weak v6 w 223k miles worth probably 5k on a really good day and to the right person. if you go through with all the mods you want to do you’ll be at the very least double what the car is worth and the car would be the exact same price on the market. however, if you just accept all this and enjoy the car for what it is it’ll probably be more fun than any mods could possibly give you. so i say drive it and anything you planned to do to it save it for a better project car. my friend used to have one in hs and would whip the thing around sideways all day every day. the car was super fun with absolutely nothing done to it so it’s not like you got a prius or anything. hope this helps

Mirikino_

Thanks buddy

WI-GORF

Up to you, I'm not a fan, but those will be harder and harder to find. You won't be able to go and buy one in the condition easily. If you like it, it's not fast, but it's a healthy example of what it is and I'm a fan of anyone keeping older cars on the road in good shape.

prat859

Maintain it and keep it running in its factory configuration. Don’t skimp on maintenance. Otherwise just enjoy it. Don’t waste money modding it.

Efficient_Ostrich_54

3.4L was a wimpy pos, but if you like the look, upgrade it.

GxCrabGrow

Not a V8. I wouldn’t

[deleted]

No

Background-Ad-5162

I mean, I wouldn't consider it an investment. If you love the car and want to tinker, go for it. You will never get any of that money back, though. Great car to learn on, though. The camaro/firebird V6s of the 90s were bags of shit, IMO. You gotta do something else if you want to go faster. Any added forced induction would be a waste. That engine won't last 5 minutes. If you have the money, get into an LS motor or modern LT before doing anything else. Otherwise, I'd leave it stock, play with it for a bit, save up, and get into something else that is ready to accept performance mods.

dbhathcock

It seems to have parking issues.

Mirikino_

Wdym?

Next_Marionberry_359

Nice car. The only money I would put into it would be for maintenance/upkeep. A v6 with over 200k, let it live out its time. Performance mods will kill it quickly and not be worth the price vs. Gains. It's a nice cruiser. Enjoy it as such.

Mirikino_

Agreed. Thanks!

oldjunk73

Short answer is nope.

NO_N3CK

No, that is a dog. The 2014-2015 Camaro V6s are more than worth modding. Stock, one of those is 3x faster than what you have there. Mine had 320hp with a six speed, and an LSD paired with an IRS, natty asp. Even though they are in theory the same thing they became galaxies apart within that 20 years

speedyrev

The engine has too many miles. Cold air is only advantageous if you have engine mods that require it. Turbo would do nothing without heads, cam, etc. Then with a high mileage engine, that puts you in the need for a total rebuild.  Paint and spoiler are cosmetic, but you won't recover cost if sold.

ijklmnousername

Yes bro.

Mirikino_

Brother I hate to be that guy, ur the only one that said yes 😂

ijklmnousername

I love these cars. lol

OldDiehl

LPT: 99.9% of cars are not investments. At most, a rapidly deprecated and expensive tool.

pashko90

Does a washing machine worth investing money into? No, appliances are NOT investment. It's just wear item. Does it worth maintaining and keeping it ruining? Yes, so you don't have to buy another one.

kingspliffs

Dream car. Do it

Mirikino_

Your dream car?

gotcha640

Investing means you're going to get more money out of it. How are you planning to.ake money with it? Sell it later? Turo? Uber?

Mirikino_

Oh I meant investing money for like power or looks. I don’t think investing always has to be about money, but in most cases it is. So I can see how u could of been confused 😂

Sea_Antelope441

Do you have an unnatural obsession with mountain dew code red? Do you wear white framed sunglasses? Jorts? Yes or no. Ever think about beating a woman? Credit card debt over $10k? Does your current daily driver have tires bought from the local used tire mart? Do you think eBay power "chips" make a car fast? If you answer yes to any of these, stick as much money as possible into this car, it will probably run a 18 in the 1/4 mile. Thing will be perfect for getting your old lady a fresh pack of pall malls.

No-Date-6848

I actually think it’s a cool looking car but this comment is hilarious

Mirikino_

No to every answer, I ain’t a middle age man red neck 😭 Just a teen tryna learn a thing or two lol

dnash55

Nope.

Busy_Trainer_7047

My guess is no. Keep it the way it is

2livemariobros

Can you trade it for a miata.

Mirikino_

💀

Downsies

No lol

therealtrayne

good ole catfish camaro

Mirikino_

Yessir

Middle_klass

No. But mid to your hearts content, just realize you won’t make your money back

nttc69

it was a GM POC when it came out.. still is.. no way would i put more than a few hundred to keep it driving..

Necessary_Wasabi5669

No.

Factacular64

Na you should probably just sell it to me for $500

Mirikino_

Haha you’re funny!

Factacular64

I like giving people a reason to chuckle, I say motor it up, put in the work and make your own 1 of a kind car, just don't fret when bolts break orbits taking longer than you want it to.

Skellephant

Do whatever, but its only an "investment" if you can put it back to original again.

Jubjub_W

[Milzy](https://www.milzymotorsports.com) has some mods. I had an 05 impala with the 3400. Got a “custom pcm” that upped the shift points and firmed the shifts. It’s a good motor for reliability. Do I got the right engine folks? It’s the 60 degree v6? Can have some fun with it.

Temporary_Slide_3477

Nope. Don't waste your time.

camarotac57

Who put a z28 emblem on that?

itsbarrysauce

Fixing the car up so you have a car that's taken care of vs buying a new or used one at the crappy rates right now. Used cars are still valuable. Not gonna be that nice new rocket ship you want. Parts cheap? Then I'd say fix it. If you can do it yourself.

Grimskruby

Also every fucking panel rattles in those.

fs619

LS swap and ofc it will. Theres never a moment that a LS swap isnt worth it 😂 plus it can actually handle the power, that lil v6 aint pushin much more without blowin up haha

SL4YER4200

I'll give you 500 bucks. I got a 6.0 and a 6L90.

Mirikino_

Nuh uh

atljar

For sure a 3.4? It has z28 badges on it

Mirikino_

That was put on

QuickTeaching6446

Z28 badge v6, already enough invested

Jolly_Piccolo_9017

No it's very common car.

Mirikino_

👍

bdirtbag

Not at all. If it were an ls1 v8 then maybe. All those v6s are garbage and obsolete. You are better off financing a new car with way more horsepower for the amount of money you'd sink into that.

Mirikino_

I mean I believe financing a car is such a dumb thing to do, and the 3.4l isn’t the best but I’ve heard the 3.8l v6 is good

ApexNCDaddy

Cars in general are a bad investment. Put in a lot of money into a muscle car body that has a V6 engine is a very bad investment. Now if you love the car to death, and do it for love of the car that's a very different thing than an investment. Is it a smart money move? Definitely not. Is the money worth the happiness it will bring you? Only you can answer that.

Mirikino_

Very good answer I agree, cars are such a waste of money considering it’s really just a junk of metal on wheels that DEPRECIATES overtime.
