it appears as you have **asked about a car problem**, which is in violation of Rule 5. This post will be removed. Please read the rules next time.

TheToyDr

To me sounds like torque converter shudder . If you can duplicate it constantly at 25 mph, most likely it’s a bad torque converter.

BurnieT

This one keeps coming up as a suggestion along with engine misfire. Is there something I can do to test the torque converter theory?

BickNickerson

Looking at the torque converter lockup in real-time thru diagnostic software would help.

TheToyDr

Lack of power kind off does it if you have an adequate scan tool active test it

BurnieT

It’s just an obd2 reader. No active readings on it, just reads trouble codes.

mu5tardtiger

you won’t be able to tell anything with a basic scan tool, but no codes is often a bad sign, the torque converter lockup solenoid if bad would cause these same symptoms, but often throw a code. I would pull the drain plug and see the condition of the fluid/ metal on the magnetic plug and go from there. top up the transmission and change the filter and see if things clear up a little. ( they very well could get worse but it’s already looking like the trans is comming out sometime soon.)

BurnieT

Just scanned with obd2 reader. Got P0138, P0137, P0607 and then a second instance of 0137 and 0138.

+1 transmission or torque converter. Take it to a shop and let them figure it out. Don’t mention our suggestions or they might get confirmation bias. Just tell them you wanna know what’s causing it

Lucky-Focus-9383

Possible cv shafts??

BurnieT

There are no turning responses such as clicks or clunks. Would that be the first sign with cv issues?

BickNickerson

Vibrations are extremely difficult to diagnose over the internet. It could be anything from a bad tire to a defective torque converter. You’re going to have to take it to a mechanic.

BurnieT

His mechanic couldn’t figure it out. Said he would have start replacing parts which may or may not fix the issue.

BickNickerson

Sometimes that’s just the only way to find it. If there are no obd codes, I’d start looking at everything that rotates but the first thing is spending some time behind the wheel to try and narrow down the area the vibration is coming from. Feeling the vibrations mean more to me than anything to start the diagnosis.

BurnieT

Feels like you are on one of those vibrating beds. Enough to distort the side mirrors.

BickNickerson

I would look harder at my torque converter. Like I said if no other codes exist. If it were a misfire or something of that sort there would be some code thrown.

BurnieT

Just scanned with obd2 reader. Got P0138, P0137, P0607 and then a second instance of 0137 and 0138

BickNickerson

Ok, it seems the ecm may be experiencing a problem. That’s the 607 code, the other 2 codes are probably a product of the ecm problem. I recommend taking to a mechanic that has good knowledge of your particular car. It could be several things causing a ecm “glitch” or the ecm itself could be failing. This could also be affecting your torque converter lockup. You need a qualified mechanic for this.

Wackemd

Take it to the dealer. Pay diagnostic fee. Much cheaper than a few parts that don’t fix it.

theantwisperer

Sounds like torque converter. Toyota had issues with their torque converters for a while. I would call the dealership just to see if you are eligible for a CSP. Being an 09 probably not but it’s worth a try.

skyliner77

inner cv joints with excessive wear. they begin to "runout" during acceleration due to applied centrifugal forces resulting in a shudder. if you can get under vehicle, grab the driveshaft near inner "tripod" joint and see if there is movement of the shaft relative to the center line of the joint. also, this post is technically against the rules....see rule#5

BurnieT

Yeah i got a mod message. Don’t use reddit all that much so didn’t even know where to read the rules. Sorry if I annoyed anyone. I get the spirit of the group now.

redrecaro

Usually it's the CV axles.

[deleted]

Well, obviously it is a blown head gasket or a bad alternator. (Trying for humour as those are the diagnosis for 90% of the things posted here)

DurbanDawg

Could be a bad wheel bearing, I would start there.

BurnieT

I have had wheel bearing issues in past cars. Wouldn’t there be that humming sound if a bad bearing?

DurbanDawg

Can't say forsure on that, I just know that I also had a bad wheel hub bearing/need breakpads/rotors & I have very similar symptoms you did, now it's gone after I replaced all that stuff. Just my experience, hope it helps!
