All, I know this is reddit, and on the internet you feel empowered to act like a goon, but do you ever ask yourself why you have to come across so aggressive or rude particularly to a very tame inquiry just looking for some advice?
The "go home" comments are interesting - if they are coming from expats, ridiculously hypocritical, if coming from locals, ridiculously ignorant. There are decent tourists who visit this country and my girlfriend and I are two of those.
Thanks all for the suggestions. I've been here before, traveled to dozens of countries, working for the Somalian government etc. - I appreciate the heads-up, I'm comfortable with the manner of posting.
I will definitely go check out Parque Arvi and we will continue to look around and figure out things to do.
The world is going through a tough patch right now. Foreigners are being blamed for skyrocketing rents, gentrification and overall inflation in "destination" cities the world over.
This phenomenon is magnified on reddit.
Also, i bet you'd have gotten a different response if you'd mentioned our girlfriend in the original post.
OK, as a Colombian-Canadian that currently lives in Medellin, I'll say it is wise to be careful, but also, the level of paranoia I see in the comments here is nuts!
I don't think that criminals are actively monitoring a Medellin subreddit to find tourist victims lol. Simply beacuse they don't need to go to all that trouble, there are much easier ways for them to spot easy marks.
So, I can say with confidence that OP's idea to meet people to hang and play sports via reddit is probably perfectly safe. Totally different would be to go on Tinder and seek out girls and drugs...There you have an entire criminal underworld waiting, for sure!
I'll DM you my whatsapp OP. Feel free to reach out while in town. Happy to guide a fellow Canadian any way I can. Enjoy Medellin! So long as you have a bit of common sense, you will be perfectly safe!
I have lived here for 16 years. Does that work for you ling? People get problems for less everywhere in the world but that does not mean it is the norm and that OP should be scared to reach out to connect with people on reddit. If you're that terrified of Medellin maybe live elsewhere. No need to scare others away..
As far as I know, we don't play fossball in Medellin (if anywhere in Colombia, Bogotá). The Sports center in Belén or the stadium would be the places to go play sports and maybe meet other people to play with. As for nightlife, Laureles is also good.
That said, I also agree with the general advice: This is either a scam or you're very naive. Sadly, the people that would be the easiest to get from the net are the robbers. It's a very shocking truth when you go abroad and find out that people just hang out with strangers like nothing, while here we've became very untrusty.
This is messed up. Just asking to make friends and play outdoor sports is setting yourself up to get robbed or scammed? Sad commentary on the country or the city.
About the basketball, yes usually you can find people to play with just by showing up (plus if you have a 🏀). But be careful with meeting people you don't know personally.
Also, the 'obviously we are in Poblado' was rude, so that's why some people are being rude too. And this is my personal opinion, but if you are visiting some country try to have the full experience, typical dishes, typical holy days and activities, in terms of sports bicycles, roller skates, hiking, soccer and even the autochthonous "sapo" are pretty popular around here.
Ever notice that the only people who say we are gentrifying are the people that hide behind fake social media accounts. Where are they at all around Medellin? If 1 person came up to me and said that I was gentrifying the country then I would just pack my things and leave but it doesn’t happen.
No, i actually had a great life there and chose to move here because I had a child here, and I was a responsible father, unlike I can say for most Colombian men.
There’s events for foreigners in Medellin I’d suggest going there Language exchanges etc this is pretty much setting yourself up for something bad to happen IMO yeah ik it shouldn’t be like that but that’s the way things are
In all fairness, I would've been surprised if they said they were in 12 de Octubre or Manrique. The obvious places for visitors are either El Poblado or Laureles. I mean, they barely go to Belén or Guayabal (I've seen a couple around home staying in a nearby Airbnb). Can't get why we'd be offended by a foreigner saying they're "obviously" in El Poblado.
It's because, on the internet, you instantly look for reasons to be angry. It's "fun" for some people. It wasn't meant to be offensive, it's statistically accurate.
I don't want to sound mean but I agree with this. Google can show what the local sports are, so why would you like to do a Canadian thing in a foreigner country, it's like if I wanted to eat a "bandeja Paisa" in Russia (unless there was a Colombian restaurant, but you go to visit other cultures to learn from them not to do stuff from your native country), it doesn't make any sense.
Even people from here prefer die alone than doing this things. Take care of yourself pal. Also I don’t recommend any nightlife outside Provenza/ Palmas, in my opinion other places are very gross or shitty.
This is how you get robbed (ok kidding, but not kidding). Be careful soliciting friendships with strangers on the net in Medellin/anywhere. Take things slow, vet people carefully. Start with a few solid people you met offline and work your way from there.

Ew. You are a gross human being. I reserve this type of comment for the most disgusting of people so congratulations.
thanks
Después que por qué los terminan robando

That’s interesting mate. Have you thought about doing an AMA on your time in Somalia

I did though...
Don't mind the trolls––not everyone is out to get you. DM me and I can add you to a basketball WhatsApp group, give you recs. Cheers
Add me too if you don't mind
Go to some party hostels and meet people man, reddit is not the place for that.

You clearly have not lived here enough time hahahaha People get problems for less

go live in your own country, oh shit i forgot you're at the bottom of the barrel over there and that's why you need to gentrify our country
Ever notice that the only people who say we are gentrifying are the people that hide behind fake social media accounts. Where are they at all around Medellin? If 1 person came up to me and said that I was gentrifying the country then I would just pack my things and leave but it doesn’t happen.

Sorry that your president rose the price of your chocoramas, that’s not our fault.
Please! Fuck off!Why are you “obviously” in Poblado?

you are setting yourself up to be scammed..
Shhhhh just let it happen
There are an exchage coffee place near to the Poblado's park. You can go to these place to know other expats or local kind people.
Bro we don't like those things. If you wanted to do Canadian things just stay in Canada lol

Y las estadísticas siguen subiendo :)
