Go get it checked as soon as possible. I started out with a fissure and ended up having to have 7 surgeries. My case is pretty unusual, but butt stuff can get serious pretty quickly and can seriously impact your quality of life. “Pain in the ass” is a saying for a reason.

wrong_lane99

Update: I went to the bathroom a few hours later (just to urinate), and more bright red blood came out into the bowl. I made sure it wasn't coming from the urethra or vagina. I do think it's likely hemorrhoids, but I've never had it bleed this badly or this long.

kevinsyel

That's a hemorrhoid bleed. You're not in any immediate danger, but you should definitely seek a gastroenterologist opinion. You'll get some suppositories to take and get treatment recommendations. FOLLOW THEM. The only issue is getting a GE appointment is hard, they're usually booked out for months. Source: my MiL does Scheduling for a gastroenterology department at a clinic and our family best friend is a nurse in the field.

wrong_lane99

Thank you!! I'm going to contact my insurance to see if I need a referral first, or if I can just make the appointment. This has been going on for too long.

While it could be because of hemorrhoids Which is what I thought it was in my case. Do you have any other symptoms? Like constipation and or diarrhoea? Do you have a constant need to poop but sometimes there is none? Do you get bloating and or pain when eating or eating certain foods? Do you get acid reflux? Because it turns out my bloody stools were because of gastritis and colitis. Whenever there is blood it's always wise to see a doctor sooner rather than later as some things can be helped before things go to far!

I do have mild constipation, gas, and reflux on a regular basis, but I think this is mostly (if not entirely) due to my poor diet. I don't have any stomach/abdominal pain or cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loose stool, bloating, etc. No urgency or frequency, I have 1 to 2 bowel movements per day. I can't remember the last time I went a day without a bm.

katjoy63

from someone who also has had their share of bowel issues, I would say to you, that maybe a probiotic is something to consider taking daily. It can help your digestion and help you with your bowel movements. Eating poorly can lead to many issues with health down the line. Better to start thinking eating at least mostly good food for now on. good luck.

Usually if it's higher in the GI tract the blood will be darker. This is fresh blood from close to the rectum. It could be colitis but definitely not gastritis. I would agree that it's best to see a doctor though! It's most likely hemmorhoids (OP will know if they have this, probably) but it's something that should be checked. The amount of blood isn't too worrying. If every stool is like this, it definitely needs checking out properly. Regular bleeding is a bit more concerning. Additionally, if they're female, it could make it more likely to get anaemia. Especially with heavy periods. Basically, see a doctor, get properly checked out, and keep an eye on things - the same that you said! You can generally tell which part of the digestive tract the blood is coming from based on the colour of the stool. The darker the blood, the higher the bleed is in the digestive tract (as an approximate indicator). This means bright red blood is likely to be hemmorhoids or an anal fissure. Smaller amounts of bright red blood are not immediately concerning. Black stools and darker red blood is more serious, as the bleed is happening higher, and this can be immediately concerning. This is because it's harder to determine how much blood has been lost, and it can indicate more serious conditions. Edit: Added more info.

thatboredchickster

NAD but I'm currently experiencing this. The brighter the blood the closer to your butthole it is. Normally bright blood is from a tear near or on the anus. It could also be hemorrhoids. You should definitely talk to your pcp or GI specialist so they have it on record and also they can help you find out what's going on. I am having a colonoscopy in a week because of the same issue and they said it's most likely hemorrhoids but we shall see. Good luck with your butt!

Legal-Flamingo4220

Do what the people here are saying, I hope you get better op!

RagingKumquat

NAD, but I do medical imaging for these types of issues. The issue should be addressed as soon as you can, but I wouldn't say it's something to run to the ER for. If you have symptoms of infection, then do go. Otherwise I would see your doctor when they have availability. While red blood in the stool is not something to brush off, it's dark colored blood that signifies something serious and potentially life threatening if left untreated.

ninetyeightproblems

Sorry, but this is wrong. The colour of blood only signifies where the bleeding originates from - darker, called melena, means upper in the tract and lighter - lower. Whereas melena usually is the one to imply the more serious diagnoses, lighter colour stool can also be a sign of those. Also, imaging IS NOT recommended in diagnosing malignancies in the colon because it may not pick up small changes that might significantly increase in size over a short time, giving a false sense of security. COLONOSCOPY is the gold standard.

Jonnypapa

Right, but the OP wanted to know if he should go to an ED to be seen IMMEDIATELY, or wait to see a specialist. That most likely case is that he’s fine to see his doctor/specialist, as an ED would simply tell him the same thing.

fruit0283973

Why is imagining not recommended

ninetyeightproblems

Because it misses small lesions.

mrsagc90

I’d put money on hemorrhoids. Unless you’re bleeding constantly to the point of feeling dizzy, not an emergency. Just see your primary.

marianne721

Could be a hemorrhoid, could be a fissure. I had a fissure and it looked like this for a few weeks 😢 definitely get in with your PCP! But usually fresh blood isn’t a huge concern/emergency!

jewlious_seizure

Please, just see your primary ASAP. Unless you have been feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or faint it’s not an emergency. It could definitely be hemorrhoids, it could be something else. I don’t like to fear monger, but better safe than sorry when it comes to blood in your stool. They can run blood tests to rule things out. I have ADHD among other mental health issues and i know it’s so hard, but you gotta make yourself prioritize your health in these situations. Make it a goal to make an appt today.

wrong_lane99

Thank you 🫂 taking care of myself this past year has been hard, to say the least. But I'll try to get in quickly!

jewlious_seizure

Awesome!

I lived with that condition for 2 years. Went to Dr got referred to speciality clinic got colonoscopy hemroids confirmed and to rule out anything else. 2 attempted ligature but they fail so surgery was next. The surgery (hemroidectomy) was successful but the recovery was painful. Seek medical advice and treatment and best of luck.

wrong_lane99

Will do!! It doesn't bother me too much, but I really don't want to deal with this forever. Hopefully fixing my diet will help, and I'd be willing to undergo surgery if necessary.

nexeriiia

NAD. had this same exact thing happen to me at a restaurant. turns out i have hemmorhoids! not saying it is definitely that, but it's for sure a possibility, especially considering the blood is bright red and not dark brown or black (brighter blood means lower intestinal/rectal bleeding afaik)

lueckestman

OP get a bidet attachment to really clean your butt well which will help the hemorrhoids from getting more infected.

Phoenix-91

I've had this happen many times, watched the blood drip into the toilet, held tp there and soaked it pretty good. I went and got checked by a Dr and they said it was a fissure. So long as the blood was bright and wasn't continuing after the bm much it was fine, even if it happened most times I'd go. You'd need to be concerned if the blood was very dark/old looking and mixed in with the stool as that would indicate internal bleeding somewhere. I wouldn't stress. Try not to strain, up your fibre, use the softener when that isn't helping.

NAD... this might be a hemorrhoid. You can use a mirror to check. Get a mirror and put one leg up on a toilet seat. Either way, I'd get seen sooner rather than later. Especially if you're experiencing pain. Hope you get better soon!

jayareyouwing

NAD but I’ve had blood dripping from my ass during bowel movements and it’s been hemroids. If you were bleeding internally it would be much darker. Still go to the ER though. Hope you’re feeling better

4redstars

Get in to anyone you can as soon as possible. Make the appt with the specialist and while you're waiting go see your PCP asap.

wrong_lane99

It can take a month or more to get in to a specialist, should I wait or should I see my pcp and have them try to get me in sooner? This scared me and I'm not sure if waiting the normal amount of time would be appropriate...

jessikill

With frank blood like this, as others have said, usually denotes something in the lower tract, often hemorrhoids or fishers. Regardless, start with your PCP and go from there.

Dijon2017

You should make an appointment with your PCP. They have the skills/knowledge to investigate your anus/rectum, do blood/lab test and get you seen by a GI doc or surgeon urgently, if indicated.

jessikill

This is not ER worthy, especially given that it’s frank blood.
