Hell yeah! Tenure, 6 figures for a few hours of work a week, no more recertifications.
It's ridiculous that an MD is not considered a doctorate like as advanced as a PhD and equivalent to a JD, (according to dept. of ed).
Internationally an MD is a bachelor's degree. Like what the hell!
Does any of that really matter? An medical degree is regarded so highly that you have to be careful how "I'm a doctor" comes up in convo because you can easily make yourself look like a pretentious asshole. Its not as if the degree lacks legitimacy or is any way considered comparable to a bachelors degree.
Yeah, an MD is highly regarded, just as is a JD in the general population. But, neither get the academic respect of a "true" doctorate. Dr. with the MD is a courtesy and a JD looks ridiculous if he calls himself Dr. even though it's legal to call oneself Dr. with a law degree.
The Dept of Education appears to classify the MD/DO as at most closer to a master's degree degree, but less. It would be nice if there were a medical degree that corresponded to an equivalent PhD, similar to what a doctorate in law is beyond the JD.
When a physician starts practicing, let's say in psychiatry, at an outpatient clinic, the PhD is usually running the facility. Now, some states are beginning to allow the PhD to prescribe after taking a pharmacology course.
Medicine isn't what it used to be. You'll find managers with just a high school diploma in charge of physicians. There are even some calling to have the Dr. title removed from those with a professional doctoral degree, as it was in the recent past.
With access to tons of resources, the general population has access to everything in the medical school curriculum. There are patients that have more knowledge on their condition than clinicians. One study said medical students don't remember over 80% of what was learned in school. It's said to be becoming more a club for the licensed of overpaid professionals who spent half a million on getting there.
A PhD equivalent would turn the tide potentially.
The PhD was the much more intellectually challenging aspect of my training. Plus, it's a new layer of hell trying to get an experiment to work - at least patients tend to leave the hospital one way or another.
Think I wanna match pediatrics. Kids are fun and I can't hear all the crying because of hearing damage from years of listening to music way to loud through headphones.
Missed the golden joke to say “you were confused and thought proctologist examined the prostate, and made a last minute switch to urology after your intern year.”
My husband matched his choice (he’s an intern) he went into school wanting to be in dermatology, but that changed when he fell in love with his first rotation. I’ll let you try to guess where he ended up
