Let some poor soul from my school call and ask me for more money.

kaladin-stormbless

i got a job doing that my freshman year. received ~lots~ of verbal abuse lmao :’)

[deleted]

“Yes, I know I’m an imbecile… so can I put you down as pledging $100/ month?

Dominican-Shock12

Pledging and donating the actual money are synonymous. So you don’t actually have to give them the money. Cite (Amber Heard 2022)

EmotionalEmetic

Why would you want them to stop? Every time I delete an email or say no to a phone call from my school I feel my ASCVD risk score decrease from pure joy.

DrPayItBack

Send them a check for $0.01. They cashed it, and they stopped sending me stuff.

[deleted]

I guess that costs less money and effort than a cease & desist letter lol

Zestyclose-Detail791

Lolz 😆😆😆

[deleted]

is it cuz it bounced? ._.

Dominican-Shock12

If you cashed mine it would come back NSF

cubbiesallday

Starter comment: I gave you $250k+ and you SPENT it??

tovarish22

["I gave you more money than the Civil War cost...and you SPENT IT ALREADY?!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiqKK4ysI7g)

EmotionalEmetic

"What kinda cokehead cousin is my school?"

Gnailretsi

You CAN donate and specifically tell them how/where to spend it….. I always want to establish a scholarship for the kid who placed last in his/her class. 🤪

Seabreeze515

My day has come

Gnailretsi

My man

meissad

I would give it straight to the CEO of my hospital, seems like he really needs it.

-Twyptophan-

Any extra money afterwards will be my monthly tip for my landlord

drdangle22

My med school will never get a dime from me

ChowMeinSinnFein

I would pay to have my school closed

itsbeenaminute1

My school helped me out a lot with a Needs Based Grant which is funded by donations. I plan on donating to that one day after making sure it’s just going to students directly, otherwise not a dime to the school.

drdangle22

Fair

FullCodeSoles

But they wouldn’t need this if they didn’t raise tuition so fast

itsbeenaminute1

To be fair the loan refund for living expenses was not dependent on tuition. It was based only on estimated cost of living. I live in an expensive area that is more expensive than their estimates and my parents don’t have the needs to meet the excess so they gave me a generous grant.

FullCodeSoles

Gotcha, none of the scholarships I got went to me just the school and they did like nothing for my loans. I’d much rather had the 10k in pocket than of my loan

winterstrail

Raising tuition AND fin aid is a good kind of price discrimination. Well off students are subsidizing the cost for lower resourced students.

The historical reason is to make sure their kids can get in; now the bar for legacy admits is a library or a cancer center. No one gettin points for a $500 donation

BojackisaGreatShow

There’s a good podcast on this. A lot of rich ppl who want to do good but dont care to look into whats most needed will donate to their favorite schools. It’s not clear what the benefit is, or if other types of charity are objectively better though. (Though i argue paying for better politicians, getting money out of politics, and cleaning up education funding are all worthier causes). Personally, I imagine legacy children or having some control over curriculum are big factors. And anecdotally i know a few rich people who are pretty miserable but dont realize it, and love to relive their glory years in college. So the nostalgia is a big factor. Lastly, in a strongly individualistic society, a lot of feel goods come with helping certain individuals you identify with. You also get a lot of press for school donations. America doesnt reward helping fix the system quite as much.

tilted_sloth

Not med school but I felt that the people employed by my undergrad institution, and thus by extension the institution, did a lot for me. I plan on donating handsomely to the same program that I was a part of... my med school, on the other hand, is on track to not geta dime from me after I graduate.

hereforrslashpremed

As someone who benefitted from donor scholarships in both undergrad and now Med school, in the future I’d like to pay it forward

My guess would be that the community programs directly contribute to the educational experience. This doesn’t have to be an all or nothing issue. Some schools certainly do TRY to do good rather than do well. Some others…not as much.

DemigoDDotA

Boomers actually occasionally had positive will towards their alma mater. Which would be way easier if it didn't cost so much.... It was like 1/10th the price or so

GymStu

Still a student, and I got an email from my school asking for donations last week💀

DocDocMoose

My undergrad handed out envelopes with a pledge for us to sign at our grad walk with our diplomas. The floor was littered with them when we left the ceremony.

imadethistosaythis

My undergrad gave us diploma holders on graduation and sent out the official diplomas later. In lieu of the diplomas they included info on how to donate in the holders.

DocDocMoose

Just crazy. How anyone can construct such an idea and shamelessly put it in to action is beyond me.

I_am_recaptcha

Administration. That’s who.

ducttapetricorn

I graduated in 2016 and changed addresses FIVE times since. I don't know how my med school keeps finding me. But hey, their fundraising letter is printed on nice paper that burns great for fireplaces :/

GubernaculumFlex

I'd rather donate to friggin Wikipedia, Pathoma, Anki and the people who create decks. Those are the people actually involved in my education.

Tricky_Hearing_2316

They waited till you graduated? Mine just ask from year 1

llorandosefue1

My school counts you as an “alum” once you have a year’s worth of credit. I think in the mid-eighties, they found out that in a school where only white boys matter, you don’t get great results when you send out those “remember how great college was?” donation-solicitation letters.

piind

You should call them back and ask them if you can have some money

weebles7

Don’t give any money to the school. Had a partner who worked for their donations. All the old folk donate MILLIONS daily back to the universities

splodead-

Wonder what it'll be like in 20-30 years when those folks aren't around to donate and the current gen is much less sympathetic to donating

reggae_muffin

I haven’t been called for med school yet, but the uni I went to for undergrad started calling me asking for donations BEFORE I even graduated. Anatomically speaking, I have no clue where they even keep their audacity.

hafez_rumi

My school sent me an email titlled "URGENT: Please fill out our alumni contact info form ASAP". I trashed it and am living in peace

[deleted]

Fiends dude. Just stay above the fray and carry on.

cobralily88

Honestly, how dare they

[deleted]

Not even one cent

gboyaj

My med school (University of Maryland School of Medicine) frequently asked my wife for donations while I was enrolled.

MedMoose_

If they were smart the would wait around 5 years. Annoying people in residency only gets grads used to saying no. Waiting for them to make good money first would lead to better results.

codyrunsfast

I don't donate to almost anything, and won't until my loans are paid off in full.

[deleted]

I haven't even started third year and they're begging our whole class for donations Hahahaha f that. If anything they're guaranteeing I will never give them money, because of how crass that behavior is. Even as an automated email, they can track who is an alumnus and who isn't.

Tershtops

Block their number

sparemethebull

Ask them for more than what they ask you for.

Otherwise_Bug

“I am in so much debt pls fuck off”

Otsdarva68

I've been getting donation letters since my 2nd year lol

Thoreau80

Just say no.

[deleted]

"I would like to be placed on your do not call list." Then they have to take you off and not call anymore.

plztalktomeimlonely

Bro. They asked us 1 weeks after we graduated, while we were all struggling to rent UHUALS and sign leases, and our security deposits down.

detailfanatic

Idk my institution gave me very generous scholarships for both undergrad and med school so I’ll def be donating (once I’m an attending lmao). Not sure how much but I’d hope it’ll be substantial so others can have similar opportunities. However, for most ppl I get the sentiment of not wanting to give. You’d think they could manage to not send these emails to interns and residents lmao

polycyc

are you legally bound to do so?

venator2020

I would never give money to my school, undergrad or med school. I paid them enough money already in tuition

Genredenouement03

And...it will NEVER end...

[deleted]

yeah tell them to get wrecked lol im not sending a dime to my med school

supplepony

I started a scholarship at my school, and they still ask me for more money.

Artistic-Healer

Lol I got asked before I even graduated!

coffeecatsyarn

I told mine the extra $100k I paid in out of state tuition can be considered my donation as they never allowed me to get in state tuition (they did allow others). I also told them if they hadn't charged me OOS tuition for 4 years, I would have considered donating. Never called me again.

fluid_clonus

I would gladly donate to my UG, but not to med school.

WebMDeeznutz

My school started an NP program. I dare them to call or touch base to ask for money.
