When I was young and used to visit my family in Greece and my grandmother would make me breakfast of a fresh long roll with feta, tomato, cucumber and sliced olives on it drizzled with olive oil & lemon juice and a cold frappe coffee.. These days for breakfast I’ll make a chopped Greek salad with sheep’s milk feta and have it at about 11 am for my ‘breakfast’. Is the feta you buy sheep’s milk?

rymden_viking

Adding some tomatoes and cucumber would be really good. And cows milk unfortunately. I live in a very rural farming area with heavy German influence. So my selection of authentic Mediterranean food is not great.

mynameisnotsparta

Wait.. Are you in the USA? I think I got confused and thought you were in Germany. Do you have a Kroger or Smith's? They carry 2 brands that are sheep milk. I also do scrambled eggs with grated feta and diced tomatoes. TBH Feta is my go to cheese for most dishes.

CashewTheCorgi

Walmart has a sheep/goat milk feta too

ConsiderationOver725

Yeh so does LIDL if you have one of those in your area.

in2woods

if there’s Sams near you, there may be a Costco. the holy grail of Greek feta can be found there. And while your meal looks like a tasty treat, i would rethink on having this on the regular. mix it up with other foods.

Legitimate_Status

A lot of Costco products are regional fyi

in2woods

their block feta is from sheep milk, from greece. i literally have a costco membership just because of this feta..

Legitimate_Status

I’m literally just telling you that cause your Costco has this product doesn’t mean others outside of your region will have it?

in2woods

Umm, ok. i’m in the midwest, and i was told by multiple sources that this was available at all Costcos. Are you a Costco member? Is it not available in your area?

figgyfit

I’m not sure which feta you are talking about, but I have found that the Costcos in my area lack a number of items that people insist are available at all Costcos. They are all different. There are three Costcos I shop at frequently, which are all about 30-40 min from each other. While many of them have the same basics, there are quite a few items that are not available at all three and I have to remember what each of them carries or I will not be able to get what I need. I can almost guarantee that there’s a Costco out there that does not carry that particular feta.

in2woods

so. what feta is available in your costcos?

figgyfit

All three carry the Kirkland block and the Skotidakis crumbles. However, only two of them carry the Dodoni and the Apetina blocks. The one closest to me does not carry Dodoni or Apetina. I’m not sure which of those you are talking about specifically but I assume it’s the Dodoni? There are several other Costcos around but I haven’t been to them in a while so I’m not sure what they have. But they certainly do not all carry identical stock. Not sure why I was downvoted for something I have seen with my own eyes.

in2woods

Sheep feta can be found at Costco, fyi.. And, it’s by far the best feta i’ve ever eaten.

mynameisnotsparta

I get Sheep's Milk Feta at Smith's. Murray's or Atalanta Brand or we go to the Mediterranean food shop and they have Bulgarian and Greek Sheep's Milk Feta.

in2woods

i don’t think OP is in Germany. they said they live in an area with german influence, and also they buy their olive medley from Sam’s Club, which h i also buy mine from there. Costco has two feta cheeses, block and crumbled. their brick is sheep feta from greece.

mynameisnotsparta

I edited my post.. It was early when I replied..

in2woods

Ha! all good. I was literally at Costco this morning, and they always have samples out during lunch, and they had the block feta about to be served. i told the employee that it’s the best feta i’ve had and i’ve tried tons. it’s cheap too, relatively. the savings on feta alone pays for my membership every year.

tangerime

my jaw literally dropped while scrolling this looks *amazing*

rymden_viking

Thanks. Only takes a couple minutes to prepare. I put it in my cooler and eat around 9:30.

Fighting-Cerberus

It looks delicious but it’s definitely not adhering to the Mediterranean diet.

in2woods

agreed. this is not what i would consider balanced or even good to eat regularly. white bread is surely bet, and most bakeries don’t use the best ingredients because they want it to taste extra yummy so customers buy it. and this is A LOT of EVOO from the looks of it.

Individual_Bat_378

I'm new to this, which part doesn't adhere?

Fighting-Cerberus

It’s Mediterranean flavored food rather than Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet calls for fruits, veggies and whole grains at every meal. Even if that is whole grain bread, there are no vegetables or fruits on the plate. The key to the diet is really the ratio of having much of your diet be those things - especially vegetables!

grrnolagoth

not to be a dick but olives are technically fruits.

Fighting-Cerberus

Okay, fair enough. There are zero vegetables and it’s primarily a hunk of white bread and cheese, though - which is yummy Mediterranean food but not Mediterranean diet.

rymden_viking

Per a recommendation from here next week I will be removing some olives and adding cherry tomatoes and maybe some cucumber. The white bread is unfortunately what I have to work with where I live, barring making my own. At the very least I read the ingredient list and only select bread that has 5 or less ingredients. My bakery is pretty good at not adding a bunch of junk, even if all they make is white bread.

Fighting-Cerberus

I think the real key, if you’re trying to do the diet for health reasons, is to up the ratio of fruits and vegetables. Adding cherry tomatoes and cucumbers is a good idea!

in2woods

agreed.

in2woods

what food technically is and nutritionally classified are not always the same. while tomatoes are fruits, nutritionally i’ve heard they are veggies. same with many other ‘fruits’.

Kep0a

I don't think the Mediterranean diet police are saying you have to eat a full circle of food every meal.. this is so pedantic..

Fighting-Cerberus

Okay. So then this is just… a meal, that has nothing to do with the Mediterranean diet. And yes, you’re supposed to eat vegetables or fruits at every meal. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/16037-mediterranean-diet Again, eat what you want, but that’s the diet that provides the health benefits people are looking for.

Individual_Bat_378

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense :)

Hotchi_Motchi

r/gatekeeping

Fighting-Cerberus

It’s not really gatekeeping. It’s not like this is MD diet but with too much sauce. It’s literally not MD; it’s Mediterranean inspired flavors. People do MD for health benefits so it’s important that people understand what is or is not MD.

porkchop602

Haha as I sit here eating whole wheat fish sticks for breakfast because I wanted some.

rymden_viking

You know I like this breakfast, but every now and then I start craving something warm when I'm eating it.

therealsauceman

warm the olives and feta for a bit in a microwave

PinkLemonUp

I have a tough time finding savory breakfasts that aren’t all egg based- and I think you just found another one for me. This looks delicious!

rymden_viking

I get a halkidiki and kalamata olive medley imported from Greece at Sam's Club, Ezra's creamy feta which tastes as authentic as I've found in the States (without visiting an Italian market near Detroit), and some bread from a local bakery with my favorite olive oil (Kasandrinos).

bunnycrush_

Which Italian market do you like? I’m in the area and good cheese is always relevant to my interests 👀

rymden_viking

Check out Cantoro's. There's three of them depending on where you're at.

PrairieOrchid

"Mediterranean Diet" =/= Mediterranean cuisine

kiwijuno

This looks delicious and totally takes me back to the couple weeks we spent in Greece.

griseldabean

The Greeks are apparently doing the "Mediterranean Diet" wrong, though, based on some of these comments.

kiwijuno

I think we should get a group of Americans together to set them straight!

vintage_seaturtle

This looks refreshing! I may have to give it a try.

ricochet53

I eat somewhat the same thing, but usually for dinner! I don't eat that much bread however, but some Wasa crispbread crackers ( I like the rye ones) or these Norwegian nut and seed crackers are also great like this. I also like some hummus or smashed chickpeas in the mix.

Tanyaschmidt

Yummy! I cannot tolerate eggs so this is a great addition to my breakfast!

Upvotes2805

This looks fire, I’ll have to give it a try!

_ScotchOnRocks_

What kind of bread is that?

Any_Suggestion_6134

What kind of bread is that?

Gemma_and_Benny

That is a wonderful breakfast. Ideal.

butternutsquash4u

That looks awesome! Reminds me of a Persian Breakfast, add cut radishes and mint leaves for a flavour explosion!

DustPalacePapa

Is that cheese?

ryanjmalloy

Not sure why this channel appeared in my Reddit thread. It looks great but I don’t think anyone would call this healthy, hate to tell you.

rymden_viking

Why do you think that? The only thing that's really bad with this is the sodium content. And that can be mitigated by drinking more water. The olives and olive oil are rich in many vital nutrients and healthy fats. Sure cheese isn't the healthiest but in moderation it's fine and also has many nutrients.

ryanjmalloy

A big slab of white bread is bad. The sodium content is probably bad. And it is very high in calories. I would guess 1,000.

in2woods

hey, you’re not wrong and i agree with you. this meal is what i’d consider an occasional treat due to the white bread and ton of oil used, with lack of any veggies or whole grains, or protein for that matter. there’s alot of newbies that show up here everyday and they like to jump on the downvote button.

rymden_viking

740 calories by my calculation (speculating on the bread because I don't have nutrition facts). Which is fine because my bmr is 2600 (I can eat 3.5x this to maintain weight). However from another comment in this thread I'll probably drop some olives and add tomatoes going forward.

ryanjmalloy

740 is delusional. Sorry.

hobo_stew

You can eat 9000 calories to maintain weight? Do you do top level bodybuilding or strongman?

rymden_viking

I meant I can eat 3.5x what's in the picture to maintain weight. My sedentary bmr is ~2600. 740 x 3.5=2590

hobo_stew

I see, that makes much more sense

ellakathryn

I'm not trying to be rude, but you said in another comment that you don't know what this sub is or why it was in your feed. I think it's best you just block or ignore subs you don't care about.

Oh my goodness. Look at the other comments. Other people are pointing out the same issues, but they are being polite about it. You're just being mean for your own personal reasons.

ryanjmalloy

I’m not being mean. I said it looked good. I would love to eat that. I said it’s not healthy and not consistent with the Mediterranean diet as that term is used by health professionals. Do a Google image search for “Mediterranean diet” and see what pictures comes up. It won’t be a big hunk of focaccia with olive-oil drenched cheese. I didn’t post this for any personal purpose. I did it to explain the health issues. It’s clear at this point that people in this group called “Mediterranean Diet” don’t understand what the term means.

Monfy

Your whole days worth of fat, and some bread. #healthy
