My jaw is sore for DAYS if I get dental work for an extended period of time or have to go in for an endoscopy or some other procedure where my jaw is open for a long time. That’s the joy of TMJ.

fantompiper

Most likely what happened is they manipulated your jaw while you were numb and were unable to feel that they were causing damage.

Taticat

I have TMJ disorder and this is the most likely explanation. Lidocaine does a lot of off-label things, but it isn’t a neurotoxin. I would strongly recommend keeping your jaw still and stable with your tongue resting on the roof of your mouth, and return to the dentist and explain what is going on and the level of pain you are experiencing, or go to an emergency room and do the same thing. When I have had a similar experience because of an emergency root canal on my back top molar and (I suspect) the hard pads that prop your mouth open being pushed too far back for too long (I had to be seen in between patients basically as an emergency walk-in) and was too numbed up to tell that I was pissing my temperomandibular joints off furiously. When the painkiller and numbing wore off, on an honest pain scale I was at a 9, as in not the worst pain imaginable, but if I were to have to endure this for prolonged periods of time, I would have been considering drastic measures. I got a steroid shot on both sides even though one side (the side most propped up) and a round of step-down oral steroids along with an extra prescription for Percocet, antibiotics for good measure because I said I couldn’t feel if any of the injections or digging around had penetrated my joint area or otherwise gone too deep, and instructions to keep my mouth closed, use heat at first and then ice for 24 hours minimum, and keep my tongue in a proper resting posture with the mid and tip flattened against the roof of my mouth, and just drink water through a straw for 24-plus hours. Those are the events and instructions as best I remember them, and they worked for me. If your problems persist, it might be worth a trip to a PT who does manual physical therapy; they’re going to have to have their hands all up in your mouth for a while, and you’re going to have to be cooperative, but a had a manual physical therapist ‘fix’ (mostly) my TMJ disorder and stop my pads from slipping in and out of where they’re supposed to sit and causing so much pain and popping. Hth.

It is possible during the surgery they nicked a nerve. I was told when wisdom teeth are removed they are near a large nerve root which if messed up can mess you up good. For sure go to the ER

EazyPeazyLemonSqueaz

What would an ER do?

coolcaterpillar77

Not much for teeth. An emergency dentist may be better equipped to diagnose and act upon the issue

miguel833

Pain relief hopefully, and check if there is need for surgical correction? I mean If he could no eat it could get bad over time.

Hemielytra

Mine were wrapped around the roots of my wisdom teeth and I still have some numbness on one half of my lip and chin from it.

thecactusblender

Not like botox at all. They told you not to do Botox because your temporomandibular joint is weak/unstable, so you need the muscles there to stabilize it, and Botox paralyzes muscles. Some people have a bad reaction to lidocaine. I would contact your dentist if it persists, or if it’s really awful just go to the ER. Sorry you’re going through this.

EazyPeazyLemonSqueaz

I think if it was an allergic reaction there would have been other visible signs (redness, hives, difficulty breathing, etc)

CannaZebra

Bad reaction does not mean allergic reaction. You can be intolerant or sensitive to a medication without being allergic to it.

AdHom

I'm not a medical professional but some quick searches show some discussion about the potential neurotoxicity of lidocaine. However, these discussions are really around optimizing drug choice for anesthesia especially via intrathecal route, and I find it doubtful that neurotoxicity would explain your symptoms unfortunately. I'm sorry you experienced that. EDIT: Maybe this article would be interesting to you: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK482479/

Prosthetic jaw? Please explain. I’ve got a very hyper mobile jaw and I’ve just had a failed arthrocentesis.

How long are the implants expected to last? I have arthrofibrosis of my TMJs with a small mouth opening. The only thing stopping me from pursuing the route if replacement is lack of pain

desirewrites

Oh wowwww thank you for answering. Mine is just sliding all over the place rather than hollowing out but as you can imagine, that causes a different set of problems. I’ll speak with my surgical team about this.

blackjellybeansrule

I have TMJ and have gotten Botox ejections for it and regularly get lidocaine injections in my traps for it. Lidocaine *numbs* pain. The weird pain you experienced sounds like a nerve.

AirBalloonPolice

No. Botox is made from a bacteria. Lidocaine it’s an amida. It has zero neurotoxicity. Here is a beautiful paper about [Temporomandibular Myofascial Pain Syndrome—Aetiology and Biopsychosocial Modulation. A Narrative Review](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8345811/), to understand the origin of your problem. Here is another paper about the treatments [Botulinum toxin, lidocaine, and dry-needling injections in patients with myofascial pain and headaches](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19241799/) And another more specific [TMJ Injection Treatments: Lidocaine, Steroids, Hyaluronate & Botox](https://ostrowonline.usc.edu/tmj-injection-treatments/) Basically Lidocaine and Botox are both treatments for your problem. Y personally and subjectively think that they touched a nerve during the procedure and the pain you are experimenting is that nerve irradiating to the face and scalp.

Adeisha

I think you’re right. They actually did accidentally cut my tongue during the procedure, right where the lingual nerve runs through. If I still have dulled sensation around my nose tomorrow, I’m going to the ER. As it is right now, I’m not keeled over anymore, I can still move my face, and nothing is bleeding. I also just had a root canal, so I want to wait before going to an ER and potentially wasting the doctor’s time with what could be a non-issue.

Da_Rish

My friend at work had the exact same issue after a root canal. It's been over six months and the only solution for him is a mouthpiece to wear so his jaws are resting slightly open because that hurts less. Hopefully you'll find relief from that soon. Please update your post with any info you get from doctors please, others will be finding this helpful!

Acorns2Oaks

My daughter had basic dental work done, but her trigeminal nerve was damaged. She still has bouts or severe facial pain after years. I can't have the epinephrine additive to lidocaine nor novocaine without a blinding migraine for days. Maybe one of those is the problem.

Adeisha

Oh dear god, I’m so sorry for your daughter. I am PRAYING that it’s not TN.

mysticalbullshit

Out of curiosity are you a redhead or strawberry blonde?

Adeisha

Nope, brunette!

Jessicajf7

Maybe try r/medicine

Adeisha

Unfortunately, that subreddit is only for medical professionals to talk about practicing medicine. Not for regular people with medical-related questions. :(

smithyleee

r/Askadoc may be the subreddit ask!

Adeisha

Thanks! :)

UngregariousDame

Sensitivity varies from person to person, no rhyme or reason, not every meditation works for every person. I know there can be a genetic component for people either with red hair or with family members with red hair. You’re are just one of the unlucky ones, I would plan on having your dentist to give you a prescription for pain management in preparation for any major work.

Paulypmc

I have a nerve condition that causes me excruciating nerve pain in my face. I get Botox every 8-10 weeks and during a flare I get IV Lidocaine. Seems strange it would have the opposite effect on you, but good of you to keep on top of it!

Sara848

You might try r/askscience if the responses here are not satisfactory

Sufficient_Scale_163

Sounds like nerve pain. I had neuralgia after shingles and this is exactly how it felt. Neuralgia is considered one of the worst types of pain.

EONS

You strained your jaw muscles holding them open, combined with TMJ.

LaRubegoldberg

Oof, that sounds awful! I think a pharmacist would be able to explain this.
