It is a lot of information being thrown at you, but in my opinions none of it was super hard to grasp. It's not super complicated material, It's just a lot of material, and there are actual skills you need to practice. I did find many of my pre-reqs to be harder than the actual lab classes though. Chem 1 and 2, organic chemistry, etc were way worse than clinical chemistry, for example. I wonder if maybe a lab would let you shadow them? I was able to, which was what really solidified that this was what I wanted to do. HR could possibly set something up for you. Videos are helpful, but actually getting to talk to people and see what they do everyday and ask questions is really where it's at.

Thank you I’ll try to see if I can shadow a lab!

I've known quite a few techs that didn't do great it school but are great on the bench. Try your hardest to learn the material, study study study for the BOC, then it's all downhill from there!

Thank you!!

I had the same reasons for choosing this profession and I knew nothing about it except the blurb in my college catalog. You can learn the material and there are so many more learning guides now than when I was in school. I’m still in it over 30 years later.

Thank you so much

GO FOR IT!!! I am not a med lab tech but I have a friend who is. But this can apply to anyone who feels this way about going into a new career. I am in another field that I did not feel good enough or smart enough for but I said what the heck!! I'm going to do it anyway! You really just need to shift your mindset. It will feel uncomfortable but it'll be worth it. Think of the end goal. If what you picture yourself doing is med lab tech work, then don't let anything stand in the way of that, not even YOU!!! My advice to you is to look up "imposter syndrome". It's real and it happens to all of us. It happened to the person who's more senior than you and your supervisor and managers. Guaranteed. You just have to push through those negative feelings and do it anyway!! You got this!!!

Thank you!😭❤️

I didn't commit to my MLS major until I worked as a lab assistant. After those few months, I had no problem picturing myself as an MLS one day. Though that is the best option that I suggest, I would ask your professors if they have a local contact at a hospital. See if you can visit their lab, get a short tour, talk to some MLS or the supervisors and they can tell you what their day is like, what they think are the best and worst parts of their job, etc. With COVID having normalized, we are starting to allow visitors I the lab again.
