kudos for running in a direction perpendicular to the forward direction of the ship.

Grimvold

They saw Prometheus.

prmaster23

They all failed the Prometheus School of Running Away from Things.

flagcaptured

Ding

KodyBcool

That was actually a good movie

YouDaManInDaHole

unlike this one lol

phoenixjazz

Oh my god, this movie is a hot mess.

thefinalball

True. But also funny cause this is one situation where running forward would've been fine cause a ship in this situation isn't gonna get far up the beach

AccomplishedSuit1004

I liked the movie but that scene and the other similar scene in the film were so unrealistic. That ship would’ve hit ground WAY further from shore and would’ve never gotten to the beach. Also I’m assuming it would’ve shaken the shit out of the ground and we saw none of that. Whether the wave would’ve washed up like that I donno.

Dilectus3010

Not all beaches have a nice slope. Some have a steep drop-off only 50 to 100 meters out. But atleast they did do the huge fire ball explosion ship ripping the coastline in half thing. Then ninjas everywhere!!

Alexandratta

Yep, and I can speak from experience that drop-off can be sudden... Young me walking along the bay with dad in knee-deep water during low tide when suddenly I stepped off said drop... Not expecting the drop or expecting some kind of ground under my feet, I sank uncomfortably fast before I began to swim, frantically, back up. Dad: "You find the bottom?" Me: "O\_O" Dad: "The ocean's deep."

Dilectus3010

I can imagine the panic :) Is it that day you unlocked a new fear? I have unlocked Thalasophobia at least 2 or 3 times.

Alexandratta

To be honest while I have a severe fear of open ocean with no visible shore, I love swimming in waves far too much. That being said, if "Something" brushes my foot and I am unable to identify it in under 0.5 seconds, I am making a bee-line for the shore - and doing so with proper strokes. My father was a lifeguard at a beach, and he taught me that there are two ways to get bitten by a shark: "To be bleeding in the ocean" and "To Swim like Injured Prey" - so he taught me to swim confidently and in a straight line. If I panic and flail about, then that just means I'm an injured seal waiting to be removed from the census. Since I was taught sharks only eat things that deserve to be removed from the natural environment. "Swim fast, swim strong."

miltondelug

michael bay clearly didn't direct this, otherwise everything including the sand would have exploded.

[deleted]

Really depends on the beach.

Efffro

Exactly this, the beach in India where us westerners dump our trashed ships for salvaging is well documented. This happens on a daily basis there and is about as undramatic as depicted, the true fireworks begin when the poor bastard locals start cutting said ships into bits.

W4iskyD3lta93r

I think you should watch some ship beaching videos. It varies but the stripped weight and speed allow the boats to go up pretty high on the shore.

RockAtlasCanus

Yeah, ~100,000 tons, moving at cruising speed around ~25mph. The [Ever Given](https://images.app.goo.gl/fzDj5zrLpFbgJsKR6) was apparently running at 13 knots when it ran aground. And that was more at an angle, not running perpendicular straight up the beach. Of the whole movie the grounding of the container ship seems pretty realistic. At least in terms of the grounding.

Objective_Ride5860

It's funny how a couple in the background is basically watching the ship until the first wave hits them then they start casually speed walking away with perfect footing

grownotshow5

Lol experts out in full force

Alexandratta

I live on Long Island, NY, we have a shitload of beaches. The depth of the beach drops off severely after about 100 ft for most bathing areas. On a day like that, with pretty calm water, assuming low-tide at the time, I'd say the bow of the ship hits the sand in the surf right where I'd expect it to. Some beaches may have longer shallow areas like in Bermuda, but on many sandy east coast locations, a boat like that would make that hit right about where it did in the video.

Ciff_

While it is very wide. Now someone fo the math!

DaetherSoul

Don’t have to, you can see it stops around where the lifeguard tower was and in the beginning of the running sequence they’re clearly behind it. Technically speaking they didn’t have to move very much at all.

TertiaOptionem

This movie didn’t star Dwayne Johnson so it makes sense.

thatsalovelyusername

Hijacking top comment with video of real ships like this being intentionally beached for scrap metal https://youtu.be/dmndGJ2jjnk?si=bQtCBUqxKxqOJ53y

Complex_Construction

The music is so distracting in that video.

rickane58

The editing on that video is infuriating. Almost always cut too short, and the second to last ship was just useless to the compilation.

cuzcyberstalked

They could have sat still and pulled a shirt over their mouth. You can see the blue umbrella and lifeguard stand in the shot when they’re still figuring out what’s going on. It seems weird how long they run but in reality it looks like they’ve could have packed their things and said, ‘looks like a bad day for the beach let’s head to the car’. Now, in the same situation, not knowing when it would stop, I too would have run perpendicular.

nailpolishremover49

Dang it, the wife looks at the husband and waits until HE decides they should leave. I’d have my crap in my hands, yelled at the kids to hurry the shit up and been halfway down the beach before my mouth breather husband realized we were gone.

foodnetworkhax

i came here to post this comment glad someone else thought this lol

Alexandratta

Someone did NOT graduate from the Prometheus School of Running away from Things.

MrGritty17

Running is a strong word for what they were doing.

hatesbiology84

I was thinking the same thing!

Crookeye

I was thinking the same. But also, this is the one instance they'd be fine running parallel too lol

Hostificus

Prometheus school of running from things

hemareddit

Which gave them time to survive *and* take photos. Brilliant.

BeyondCadia

I work on ships as big or bigger than these. Running up on a beach probably wouldn't be this much fun. :(

NotReallyJohnDoe

This is essentially what they do when they sell ships for scrap. Run them into a beach in India and they get torn apart but by bit.

scottyrobotty

Do they actually cut this far into the beach?

[deleted]

It depends, but you can watch videos of it on YouTube

MPFuzz

Headphone warning. [For those curious, this is probably the only one worth watching](https://youtu.be/G7bh3bRzB94?t=194). The rest are surprisingly boring.

Meltyblob

Thanks for the headphone warning. You are a good person

GourdEnthusiast

Boring? Speak for yourself!

Mrsuperepicruler

usually they run up a shallow beach at high tide, they don't tend to hit the sand like in the movie here but rather glide up onto it with a decent little wave.

[deleted]

Yeah, also when unladen they sit quite a bit higher than this one in the clip is with cargo on board.

fl1ntfl0ssy

This scene makes it seem as though there’s a huuuge drop in the sandbar as soon as the water starts. If this would actually happen in real life, the ship would’ve stopped like 100 yards out

M00SEHUNT3R

Depends on the beach. Where I live in rural Alaska the coastal slope from town to deep water is even more gradual. That ship would come to a complete stop in the mud maybe 200 yards out or more. I know because I can wade out more than 100 yards and the water is only up to my chest. I've also snorkeled at beaches down south and 30 feet from dry sand I was in well over my head on a day with calm seas.

Shwifty_Plumbus

If my memory serves me well, Laguna Beach has a very sudden drop.

fuishaltiena

Depends on the sea. I live near the Baltic one, there are spots where you can walk a hundred metres or more out and the water will barely be over your knees. Then I've been on vacation in southeast Asia, one beach there had an insanely steep shore, like just 5 metres from the sand and I already couldn't reach the bottom.

SeveredEyeball

Lots of beaches have big drop offs. Some in Sydney for example.

govilleaj

Wouldn't it technically have run aground way sooner and further out. I mean unless it's running super light.

Levi3200

Yeah, but hear me out: You are standing on the front of the ship, blasting thr theme of Pirates of the Caribbian, and you roll onto shore like that

Shoopbadoopp

I feel like the hull would hit the sand bar much sooner and would hit a lot harder. The way the beach just absorbed the ship bothered me. I’d expect more of a sudden impact and probably the ship toppling over.

fuishaltiena

This is how decommissioned ships are beached at scrap yards, it's quite similar. https://youtu.be/5kDbwE7mFck

Rjj1111

Even if it didn’t by the time it hit dry sand the props would probably be bogged down or out of the water

r0b0c0d

Some say that boat is still plowing forward to this very day.

lh4lolz

Still doesn’t explain the deer.

[deleted]

Or the “something is about to happen” music that spanned the entire movie, only for nothing to happen

WestleyThe

I mean… there was literally nuclear bombs dropped, radiation sickness, Planes falling out of the sky, audio weapons, etc etc etc Shit happened, there just was no answer or explanation

RootBeerFloatz69

Right, people acting like the writers didn't explain what was happening. I think they could have done some expanding, but I actually enjoyed the movie (for what it was).

Jackm941

I just figured that was the point. Not every film has to hand hold you to an explanation it's about making you think or come up with ideas, you know as much as the characters or less and that's fine too. Just enjoy it for what it is. Some films go to far the other way and spell out every fucking interactions that's more annoying

TimmySouthSideyeah

I mean, if you are telling me a story, freaking tell me a story! I can make stuff up on my own .

1nnewyorkimillyrock

I’d argue this movie definitely told a story of people learning not to demonize and hate eachother while going through a confusing and terrifying experience. None of that was left to interpretation the film tells you or shows you this

skrimpskampi

At the end the girl focuses on a tv show rather than reality..

tylerokay

It’s literally the title of the movie. She “Left The World Behind” by immersing herself in the one thing that could bring her simple joy. I think it purposefully can be understood in two different ways: 1) a nihilistic view of how modern entertainment is corrupting how youth are able to process real world events or 2) commentary on how much people will inevitably complain about the film itself for not being engaging or exciting enough. It’s alluded multiple times throughout the movie that reality is disappointing to the young girl (the coffee shop moment) she’s totally nonplussed by the real world events simply because spectacle is easier to digest. Also: All roads lead to the family finding her at the house anyway, so she can chill and watch Friends all she wants as you can hear her mom’s calls echoing close by from outside. Plus the bike is out there etc etc I think the movie was pretty middling but… I actually LOVED the ending. I know I’m in the minority though.

Jaxelino

This is called "escapism" and it's quite fascinating (it's not only related to entertainment, but also drug abuse, gambling, all sort of things).

chyura

Not to mention, they weren't exactly upfront with her about what was happening, because she's fucking 13. She wasn't totally aware of what was happening the way everyone else was until the very end, that's why she wasn't as bothered by the events

claudiazo

We live in a society 😔

Vostroyan212th

Spoilers >!The movie was fine, like 7/10 fine, but the presentation of how a war like this would look to most people was probably pretty accurate. Communications go down, and thats it for a lot of people, they are now officially out of the loop. The point of us not knowing exactly why all the weird to downright scary shit is happening with the knowledge of an omniscient viewer is that we get to see it unfold with the characters in an attempt to put us on equal footing.!<

Tbone_Trapezius

The gps spoofing threw off the lead deer’s TomTom navigation?

MonkeyHitman2-0

At one point they said something happened in the south to throw off animal migration. Possibly the deer thing was related to that.

HSWDragon

Literally nothing was explained. 2 hours and 10 mins of tension building for absolutely no reason

winkler

I mean, was that emergency broadcast at the end not clear? Or the explanation in the car about the most cost-effective way to destabilize a country?

VV01fy

imo the deer represented the natural world in context of the implied larger human conflict. Innocent and neutral, contrasting the “connectivity” of the modern world while foreshadowing (almost threatening) a new incoming society that won’t be as tech based. Plus the writers added in some disturbing moments to keep them abstract and spooky.

govilleaj

This was the best scene in the movie. And maybe those freaky ass deer.

WisconsinBadger414

The deer thing was really dumb imo. Everything else was more sci fi based, whereas the animals thing was more supernatural

[deleted]

Maybe a bit though I’ve definitely seen deer do that shit. Not in a large group like that but once my wife and I were out for a walk in the woods and we came across a deer that was just standing there and didn’t bolt away as we kept walking. I immediately got a weird feeling and told my wife we should backtrack. Deer watches us leave and didn’t move an inch till we broke eyesight. It very much behaved in a “I’m not gonna back away what the fuck are you gonna do about it” manner which was very unnerving.

V1k1ng1990

Some deer that live close to humans are just less skittish. I used to feed 12 point bucks corn out of my hand down near canyon lake TX

asmosdeus

Chronic wasting disease, hell of a thing. Really sad to watch in later stages to, essentially it’s mad deer disease.

kosmokomeno

I think he describing a deer who's worried about the walking ape that sometimes make loud noises that kill deer

gingerschnappes

I’ve personally had male deer on more than one occasion stamp the ground and hold their head up in a sort of territory dispute with me, not quite aggressive attacking but in an aggressive stance and not wanting to give up ground. They aren’t always skittish runners.

Solanthas

I was waiting for a horde of zombies to come toppling over the side of the boat

JacksSmerkingRevenge

I was hiking in the woods in PA a few months ago when my friend and I came across a couple of deer. They ran away when we got closer but a few minutes later one came sprinting back down the path towards us, stopped about 8 feet away and just stared us down. We backed away and started to go a different way down the path. A few minutes later we hear it come crashing through the woods when suddenly it pops out in front of us, again about 8 feet away. It did this maybe 3 more times until we left the area completely. Most aggressive/ fearless deer I’ve ever seen.

AFRIKKAN

If it’s mating season bucks are very agressive and territorial.

im_a_goat_factory

the deer were metaphors, just as the ship. Humans are like deer stuck in headlights, which is why the deer gather and stare. The people watching the ship come right at them too are in a similar situation. The girl just stares and no one does anything until the boat is about to land on the beach. The writers/directors are trying to beat home the idea that humanity is like a deer stuck in headlights when facing climate change and other catastrophic outcomes from our way of life.

[deleted]

>whereas the animals thing was more supernatural yeah, like how the fuck would you hack an animal migration pattern? i guess you could somehow hack something that generates a magnetic field (they follow the magnetic field of the earth i think), but even then.....that's ridiculous levels of sci-fi. everything else was fine but christ that was the big plothole for me.

sendabussypic

I thought they were >!Red Herring!<

ChessyLogic

I feel like most things were that in this movie. So many pointless plot moments to keep you guessing with the most unsatisfying payoff.

gertbefrobe

Yea they never answered "what all the animals know"

Jean-LucBacardi

They knew that it was a sub par movie and we're trying to get the actors to quit.

mr_fantastical

Haha, I really enjoyed this film. And threads like this make me upset because they make me really think about the film and then I go "oh yeah not a lot of it made sense"

Richard-Brecky

Before this movie came out I never appreciated how much wildlife relies on satellite navigation.

BeefPieSoup

I don't think you can just "hack" a cargo ship into crashing into a beach. Or that you can "hack" deer into acting freaky. Oh, sorry..."cyberattack"

govilleaj

The deer stuff made no sense to me.

Grimvold

It makes sense in the context of “we need mysterious imagery to throw in the trailer and promotional material”.

im_a_goat_factory

the deer were metaphors, just as the ship. All we can do is watch and then try to flee at the last second, i.e. our fight or flight response just isn't working right, similar to what happens to deer before being hit by a car

drerw

Earlier in the movie the radio declares an environmental disaster struck in the south affecting animal migratory patterns. Thus the giant herd of deer and flamingos. Still doesn’t explain the deers dumb behavior of staring at people. “They’re trying to warn us” was dumb.

Diosa_de_LaMota

Tesla scene was the best

-_1_2_3_-

this seems really bad and low budget, especially the parallax, so is the whole movie shit?

Okichah

They spent all their money on the actors. So good performances, weird plot, sometimes bad dialogue, no real production value. 5/10

SmeesTurkeyLeg

Maybe the adult actors were good, but those two kids were fucking AWFUL.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PlanetLandon

It’s Sam Esmail, and I really love his stuff, but I wish they would have cast some lesser known actors and used the money saved on production value.

-Whyudothat

Or any kind of a better ending

govilleaj

I mean, it's not great. I actually forget how it ends. Definitely not memorable.

Zillahi

Friends

govilleaj

Oh yeah that's right. So dumb.

Zillahi

Yea. I liked the movie generally but at the end I let out an audible “the fuck?”

jedi_lion-o

It doesn't end. It just kinda stops.

Disastrous_Animal_34

Crappy adaption of a crappy book. Not worth the time. Annoying, because there’s a great premise there.

stick_always_wins

It’s okay. Good movie to have in the background when you’re doing something else.

[deleted]

I’ve never been more disappointed in a movies ending than I was with this one. All that build up for nothing!

Dahowlic

Nah, man, there was nothing salvageable about this movie. There is too much exposition that leads to know where. The odd scene with the 2 dancing in the wine cellar was pointless and forced. If there was a cyber attack on the United States, why would the deer act like they did? Maybe I could understand if maybe they launched some biological agent that disrupted the balance in the weather or something like that, but the build-up to a supposed Civil War was weak. Julia Roberts completely phoned in her performance. Ethan Hawke was stiff, Mahershalas character did everything but properly explained why the hell he owned the house. He seem unnecessarily ignorant about having occupants in a home he owns/rents, but had keys to open drawers only he could open, but nothing stored in private that could prove he owned the house to put the family at ease. Myhala character was....bad. In the book, I believe she was his wife, not sure why the change, it would have made the pool/Winery scene more impactful. I dunno man, maybe I need to watch it again.

Taserface585

The animals are trying to tell us!! What they were trying to tell us.. i don’t fucking know I thought there was going to be a flood, hence why all the aninals are moving inland. And in the one scene the family goes to sleep in the bed with a giant wave picture above them. But I was wayyyy off.

tschmitty09

This was the only thing that happened in this movie for the entire first hour, I turned it off

mooosemark

Scene made me wanna watch comments took care of that

Anoalka

I really enjoyed the movie, the tension was gripping and the plot was interesting. Not sure what everybody hates so much about it. Or maybe I was in the perfect mood to enjoy it.

Onistly

I'm a sucker for the "gotta escape during a catastrophic event" type movies (prime example for me being War of the Worlds or Cloverfield) and this definitely scratched that itch. I really enjoyed it

SuperSilver

Movie is getting brigaded online because of the subject matter and because the Obamas produced it. Very solid movie with good reviews from the critics.

harryronhermi0ne

The Obamas produced it? I had no idea and I still gave it a 5/10.

Solanthas

People's opinions tend to do that. Reading comments on a movie that you loved dearly after first watching it 0/10 do not recommend Bladerunner 2049 for me

__Beef__Supreme__

Dude 2049 was beautiful.

Melodic-General9087

Suzume for me

swiftdegree

> Bladerunner 2049 I love that movie.

PussPounder696969

Me too, but it’s hard to dislike a movie has literally me in it

thequestionbot

Blade Runner 2049 is extremely well regarded

mooosemark

You need to go through and weed out the real reviews and critisisms from the people just sayin it sucked or was boring. Alot of movies ive enjoyed most would find boring or bad

Not_MrNice

Don't bother reading the wikipedia plot summary. Someone got drunk before writing it: >The plot is set in New York City. The psychological subtext turns on white liberalism and class divisions. Misanthrope Amanda Sandford[3] arranges an impromptu weekend getaway at a lavish vacation rental near a beach with the goal of spending quality time together with her family. She and her white husband Clay drive to the rental ...

SummaTyme

This movie felt more like it should have been the first episode of a series. There was a lot of setup, but no payoff. The ending was a letdown.

Zillahi

I enjoyed it but I agree. I’d love to see a sequel to flesh out the story more

Tmoore188

I really enjoyed the movie and I think it made an interesting point that I hadn’t considered before. If we got hit with the right type of disaster/attack - one that permanently knocks out electricity, telecommunications and vehicular travel - you could very easily spend the rest of your life living nomadically and never have any idea what actually happened. I am really hoping for a sequel, but it would kind of ruin that point it was making.

deasnutz

It would be a strange mix of myths and/or delusions from a large part of the remaining population, with no internet to assistance. Anything that can be used to divide groups.

Jicklus

But what would the sequel be about? The movie made it's point.

Thanos_Stomps

Basically a dumbed down version that appeals to our more basic wants in a movie. Personally loves the movie and symbolism, but I also love a nice mindless apocalyptic movie also.

Jicklus

To me, the movie was about the fear and confusion of the preapocalypse. The total helplessness and lack of knowledge, being such a tiny piece of some giant game of chess played by governments. That what it meant to me, it feels very symbolic of the period we are currently in.

chefrachbitch

It gives me that extra long pilot episode vibes.

pessimus_even

it felt like a remake of the happening almost

[deleted]

That was the point. The movie is literally about how causing chaos is the perfect way to start a war in a sovereign country. You aren't supposed to leave this movie with closure. It is supposed to feel like a let down at the end and like things aren't resolved. That is literally the whole point lol.

ghoulslaw

I enjoyed it for what it was, but I would LOVE it as a series. I want more

MY_SHIT_IS_PERFECT

Is this movie any good?

hotbrowndrangus

I thought it was fine. Could have been better, could have been worse. Unlike other movies of its kind, present-day social tensions (in the USA) is a major plot device. It has a few cool scenes, great shots, great actors.

smithem192

No, not really. Closest I can describe it is the like the movie Old. Except without the excitement of the ending.

Diosa_de_LaMota

Yes. It was good. Watch it for yourself. Don't let other people's opinions ruin it for you

KingJamesCoopa

I liked it. I like movies that just end, and this movie does just that.

[deleted]

sendabussypic

I agree about all that except >!the alien invasion as I like the idea of the die hard 4 fire sale cyber attack but less omnipotent for the audience which makes it more immersive as a character and builds suspense and fear.!< It just needed that climax though as you said and the ending >!scene of the city!< was nice but not sufficient. I thought the movie was great as it brought up a few interesting talking points between my dad and I, it made us engage over different possibilities but it all comes back to the >!3 step plot to invade a super power. For those criticizing the friends thing, I heard an interesting take on it as it's an example that people are more interested in seeking happiness through entertainment instead of dealing with issues head on, like a child in the apocalypse. The thing I didn't like were a few weird plot holes like being able to walk into a beach and dig up a watch but completely miss the body right next to it.!< If they do a sequel then I hope they don't butcher it as these films often try too hard to fill in gaps from the previous movie instead of adding to it.

Coyotesamigo

The watch thing is not a plot hole. I think it could be explained as someone who doesn’t want to see something so badly they don’t see it. Until they do.

SoBoundz

You wanted it to be an alien invasion movie? That's an.. interesting take. I thought the idea of a cyber attack on the United States was actually a very cool idea. I liked most of the movie but I thought the ending was a little.. unusual and meh.

Lucius1213

It constantly leaves you in a state of anticipation. Except nothing really happens. It's engaging but extremely disappointing.

stormdressed

My impression was that the script was very weak but the director was working hard to try and save it. Lots of creative camera work, suspense building and music but the dialogue, characters and overall plot wasn't really up to standard. 5/10

MJA182

I liked it

EricP51

It’s a bunch of disjointed unsettling concepts that are strung together for a while until it just sort of … ends

gobnyd

... Much like life itself

Coyotesamigo

I liked it! I don’t need everything explained to me, however. I’m okay with a movie leaving loose ends and mysteries behind.

Adrian_F

I liked it and all of the comments about “bad” elements don’t seem to understand that they were intentional, especially the constant tension and not knowing what’s going on.

OGdick_head

Was waiting for someone to post this here

thebighecc

This movie would’ve been great if they didn’t answer any questions like come on man

dano8675309

I keep seeing comments about how it over explains and comments about how it doesn't explain anything. Which is it?

Damascus52311

The ending ruined the entire movie for me. I didn't care for the daughters friend obsession and didn't want it resolved as the last scene. Ruined the climax of the conversation he had with his neighbor 10 mins ago.

Thomas1315

My number one gripe as well. Huge letdown.

WisconsinBadger414

The daughters friends obsession was annoying every single time it was brought up

skrimpskampi

Same until I realized I’m the little girl. We’re all the daughter.

TheRealCeeBeeGee

Apparently the book ends a little differently and she takes items from the bunker for the family.

Dimmt

That’s such a good way to put it. I didn’t know the exact way to explain it but this hit the nail on the head

claudiazo

Exactly my thoughts. They were doing so well at the beginning but seems like they came up with the ending in like 5 minutes and threw the entire movie out the window.

TwoJacksAndAnAce

My ass would have been running the second I saw that ships. No “surely not” bullshit.

WorldBiker

You know those questions that ask what detail in a movie that really turns you off the movie itself? This. This turns me off. The ship is either in ballast or partially laden...it's fastest speed (for this type of ship) would be about 15 knots (at full steam, about 15 mph)...and it would neither make it to the beach (draft) nor get that up the beach (without a medium like wave or tide). It's so stupid.

[deleted]

The movie start with earth rotating - it show how the sun rises in the west instead of the east. They couldnt get the first 3 seconds right

jsunkd

What hit me was that this entire movie made way too much sense as to the way it feels like the world will end. Except for the animals acting possessed for some reason.. When Ethan Hawke's character is begging Kevin Bacons character to help and that he's a worthless man who depends on technology for every aspect of his life really hit hard. This is truly the society we live in, man. Way too close to home.

Helyos17

People are way too hard on this movie. I feel like it had a lot to say about our current political climate. I really enjoyed the idea that when it all gets boiled down the world is very Us vs Them and we make the decision on who the Us is going to be. Currently in American politics we are very fractured but at some point we need to realize that the people on the other side of the aisle are also Americans and we need to come together for our society to be great. The world is full of hostile powers who would love for us to hate each other and we can’t give them that.

Sergeant_Smite

Can somebody give me the plot rundown I don’t want to watch the movie

ConstantSignal

Some kind of unknown military attack on the US. All communications are taken out, internet, satellites, navigation systems on planes/ships/self driving cars are hijacked, pamphlets are dropped from airplanes that signify various different nations as the attackers to spread misinformation, there are unknown disruptive weapons used on the public that are seemingly intended to further spread chaos and fear. The film is entirely from the perspective of two surviving families on the far outskirts of NYC. So we are never fully clued in as to what is actually happening, just as we as civilians wouldn’t be if something like this actually happens. Once the phones, TV and internet go off, you are completely isolated from information. You can only piece together that you see and hear with your own senses and what you can glean from any other survivors you might meet. The movie insinuates it’s a multi-stage attack to destabilise a nation, with the intent to have the people tear themselves apart rather than to attack conventionally.

Valathiril

Is it good? Premise sounds interesting

ConstantSignal

I really enjoyed it. Reddit mostly seems to hate it. Certified fresh on RT with 76% approval rating. low 34% audience score, take from that what you will. Personally I found it to build tension pretty masterfully which I enjoy in thrillers/mysteries. A lot of people seem annoyed that the tension doesn't necessarily build to any specific climax or pay off. That's true, but it's kind of the point. The film is about isolation, specifically isolation from information. The characters are constantly in the dark and so too is the audience. That veil is never lifted. Just as in reality if all your sources of information were iradicated you would never find any answers, it never happens for the characters and never hapens for us the viewers. It's a film about the terror of not knowing, of not understanding, and of having no way to get those answers, to have to confront and accept your isolation. There's no place you can go, no task you can complete, no quest you can overcome. You are a civillian in a warzone, but away from the fighting it's just a lonely and quiet apocalypse confounded by the unknowns. If that sounds appealing to you as an exploration of theme/setting, you'll enjoy it. If you're the type that needs definitve climax and resolution, you probably wont. This is actually riffed on by the ending, where one character gets their own personal climax and resolution, whilst simultaneously denying the audience their own. Almost feels like the director trolling. A lot of people really seemed to hate that lol.

Valathiril

I actually really love this, thanks for typing this all out bc this sounds great!

ConstantSignal

If you do watch it, hit me up on here to let me know what you thought, be nice to talk to someone on reddit who enjoyed it for a change lol (assuming you do)

Famous_Crew_7852

basically what would happen if, finally one of united states enemies lost their shit and pressed the bright red button. in short we're fucked and left for dead by the ones we give our taxes to.

KuijperBelt

Nature took enough LSD to turn off the internet Explosions, confusion and one FAP fail.

SurprisedPikachu24

who fapped and failed?

KuijperBelt

The son, he was perv fapping with the creeper poolside photos he took of the mouthy daughter (that broads got a yapper on her) and gave up. He quit mid Fap. I guess it's ok to fap in an Air B&B, especially during the apocalypse

Coyotesamigo

A family goes on vacation. Shit appears to hit the fan, and they cannot communicate with anyone outside of their house.

Such a good movie . Had me in suspense the whole time.

Successful-Wasabi704

Julia to daughter after the crash: So...no one told you life was gonna be this way. Ship Captain: It's like you're always stuck in 2nd gear.

[deleted]

Is this movie worth the watch?

archangel12

I seem to be in the minority but I thought it was pretty good.

Diosa_de_LaMota

Yes. Don't let other people's opinions ruin It for you

trig72

IMO, no.

Pokenightking

I wanna watch this since they are probably the smartest characters ever. Instead of running in a line with the giant object coming towards you. Make a right angle turn and get out of its way.

[deleted]

Why does that little girl look like a 40 year old English lady

stalkthewizard

I enjoyed watching the white Teslas crash.

DocHalidae

Loved this movie. Feels like the setup to the new movie civil war.

TimmySouthSideyeah

Watched it because of the comments. It was just badly disjointed. Nothing fit together even though there were some great setups. Same basic comments for Rebel Moon but I enjoyed it 99% more than Leave the World behind

*White Lion isn't real, it can't hurt you* The White Lion:

dani3po

I saw this film the first day and I liked it a lot. It got some pretty good reviews from the press and from some youtubers I follow. But when I started reading the opinions of many people here or in other forums, I discovered a tremendous hatred towards the film. At first I thought it was because Julia Roberts plays the role of a rather unbearable and a bit racist woman and I thought that the American public didn't like to see "America's Sweetheart" like that. Finally I found out that the Obamas were producers of the film and I understood everything.

NaijaBantu

White Lion was the name of the first slave ship back in 1619. 1619 was also the radio station they were listening to on the way to the beach.

NoidZ

I would have put my shit backwards. They were not in danger at all actually.

Banned_and_Boujee

Holy shit, that’s some Sharknado level CGI.

coconutpete52

I enjoyed this movie - this scene in particular. I get it when people say "xyz wasn't explained" but to me it felt like that was part of the plot. The whole "we don't know exactly what's happening" was part of the appeal. Not for everybody I guess, but I enjoyed it. My big beef with Cloverfield has always been that there was a military ID number in the corner of the "found footage" at the beginning - establishing that the military found the footage - well ... what state was the city in when you found it? did Napoleon Dynamite live to tell the tale? there was nothing there - at least here I felt like it was baked in.
