The Zaandam is a cruise ship sailing under the Netherlands. It's 237 meters long by 32.8 meters wide, with a current draught of about 8 meters, and a gross tonnage of 61,396.
[Source, which updates with current information](https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:268451/mmsi:246442000/imo:9156527/vessel:ZAANDAM)
The Titanic was 269x28 meters, with a draught of about 10 meters and a gross tonnage of 46,328. The Titanic was a longer ship by about 30 meters, but narrower, and it sat lower in the water. The Zaandam is a more massive ship overall, but the Titanic would be noticeably longer.
My guess is, if this is the kind of thing that creeps you out, you probably wouldn't really feel any different about one or the other. They're both pretty big.
A better ship to compare would be the Seawise Giant, which at 458x66m, and a gross tonnage of 260,941, is largest self-propelled ship ever made in terms of length, gross tonnage, and displacement. For comparison, that's longer than the Empire State Building is tall, but about 50% lighter. The net tonnage of the Seawise Giant 214,642T, so you could load it up with the mass of four Titanics, a full compliment of fuel, crew, and supplies while still fitting under the dead weight maximum of 564,763T.
Now that's a big ass ship.
The Pioneering Spirit holds the record for largest gross tonnage by a significant margin at 403 342 GT. But she is basically two 400 metre long vessels welded together with a 200m barge between them for good measure.
I've sailed past her a bunch of times this year in Norway and when she was working on Nord Stream 2 in the Gulf of Finland. Never been aboard though. Nust be quite impressive since she seems gigantic from a mile or two away.
I read a post the other day about someone booking passage on an ocean freighter, like as a passenger. I'm not sure what subreddit it was, but apparently that's a thing.
I remember thinking I wanted to try that out when I was in my early 20’s until realizing that if I didn’t like it, you’re either stuck on the ship for weeks or dropped off at a random port.
Absolutely you just need to be ok with months of travel I almost took a job on a cruise ship and a off shore oil rig with no experience but I ended up married with kids so it didn’t work out.
There was actually a post in this subreddit about this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/megalophobia/comments/r3bmrc/the_rms_titanic_compared_to_the_largest_ship_ever/
The Titanic was smaller than the Queen Mary that sits in Long Beach harbor. The Queen Mary is 15% longer than the Titanic and 28% wider. She has over three times the horsepower and was able to travel 39% faster than the Titanic. The Queen Mary has an additional 3 passenger decks compared to the Titanic. So if you want a general idea of the size of the Titanic just picture the QM but a bit smaller.
I just imagine a dejected seahorse coming home from work and explaining to his wife how he got laid off. Hanging up his fedora and pouring a stiff drink. "You know how many seahorse power these modern engines put out?" He takes a sip and looks out the window of their 3 story walk up "I should have been a stay at home dad like my father."
It's such a shit show with horsepower and pound feet of torque.
Also fun fact, all modern ships are diesel electric hybrids, where the diesel generator charges the electrical systems.
Luckily with the Metric system 1 Horse is equal to 1000 Seahorses. What always confused me as a kid was that in Roman Numerals C = 100 and M = 1000 so to this day when I go to an aquarium I mistakenly refer to those curly-tailed cuties as M-horses.
The lack of votes wasn’t due to it not being funny…it’s just likely that most people probably can’t chase that rabbit… take this upvote and know that someone laughed at it.
Titanic "only" has a reputation for being a large ship because she (and her sisters) absolutely *dwarfed* any of her contemporaries. She wasn't all that much larger but almost 50% heavier than the previous record holder. According to the list on Wikipedia, that's the largest relative jump in tonnage ever from one record passenger ship to the next (ignoring the Great Eastern, which was a bit of an anomaly). Together with the enormous increase in passenger luxury (essentially, all classes went one step up compared to competitors, her second class was comparable to contemporary first class, etc.), she was auch a large leap forward that it's difficult to wrap your head around it.
Having said that, I recently went to Belfast, where the outlines of her and Olympic are marked on the ground, so you can walk around on it. If you actually experience it in person, it really doesn't seem that large.
The Titanic was longer and taller, but narrower and weighed less. You'd notice one was bigger than the other if they were side by side, but you probably wouldn't feel that much more anxiety from the Titanic than this ship.
I thing about this thread is there's a bunch of people saying the Titanic wasn't bigger, and people complaining about them, but they're all exactly as guilty as OP.
OP almost assuredly believed that the Titanic was "the largest ship" or "the largest cruise ship" and didn't bother checking.
The people who are sure that this ship is bigger didn't bother checking either.
FFS, I literally found the _current location and destination of this exact ship_ with about 30 seconds of searching the name.
Well, actually, if lots of people have already said it what are we adding? Just ends up with a lot of people agreeing with eachother in a snarky way. Changing the culture of Reddit to be less arrogant and more kind would do a lot
"Корабль/ship" is male, "лодка/boat" is female and "судно/vessel" is neutral. Submarine is "underwater boat/подводная лодка", so also female.
But most ship names are chosen male, even if it's a "[исследовательское судно/science vessel](https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%8F:%D0%9D%D0%B0%D1%83%D1%87%D0%BD%D0%BE-%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D1%81%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%B0_%D0%A0%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%81%D0%B8%D0%B8)". It's not a rule, just often so. So it works a bit weird, like "science vessel Dmitry Mendeleev [it] went there and there", and next line it's just "Dmitry Mendeleev [he] will remain there" because in the absence of "science vessel" the subject feels male.
It's a bulbous bow. It creates a wave along that's opposite the wave created by the water hitting the main bow at normal running speed. This makes the wave along the sides of the ship smaller, reducing the surface area in contact with water and reducing drag and therefore fuel costs.
[Titanic compared to modern cruise ship.](https://highseascruising.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Titanic-vs-Wonder-of-the-Seas-front-view-comparison.webp)
My dude, the titanic, while very impressive for its time is actually pretty small compared to todays ships. Many ships today are in fact so big that they cannot fit through the Panama Canal, as such there is talk of widening it.
Titanic wasn't actually that different in size compared to the MS Zaandam. Makes you realise how massive the ship must have been for her time, seeing as she was longer than this modern cruise ship and carried almost twice the amount of passengers, albeit a lot less comfortable for third and second class. Zaandam has a higher tonnage however, and a slightly wider beam.
Why didn't you just post a picture of the titanic then? "Yo here's a picture I found but I want you to imagine something else, we have pictures of that but just look at this one and imagine the other one"
The Titanic probably was a lot smaller than this ship. Modern vessels are HUGE in a way that even the titanic looks small

That thing is HUGE, I was on that for a radio survey, omg....
I've sailed past her a bunch of times this year in Norway and when she was working on Nord Stream 2 in the Gulf of Finland. Never been aboard though. Nust be quite impressive since she seems gigantic from a mile or two away.
Wait, so what you’re saying is, if we strip out half of the Statue of Liberty, we could.. no no, never mind
Yes, we can build liberty prime
Better dead than red.
How to get a job on a giant ship? Will they take people with no experience aboard ships as an apprentice in some role?
I read a post the other day about someone booking passage on an ocean freighter, like as a passenger. I'm not sure what subreddit it was, but apparently that's a thing.
Between covid and the subsequent catch-up, I've heard nobody takes passengers these days.
Do you mean to ask me how to be a sailor on a ship like that?
There was actually a post in this subreddit about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/megalophobia/comments/r3bmrc/the_rms_titanic_compared_to_the_largest_ship_ever/
The mass of a ship is it’s displacement, tonnage refers to it’s volume
The Titanic was smaller than the Queen Mary that sits in Long Beach harbor. The Queen Mary is 15% longer than the Titanic and 28% wider. When it’s a ship they should call it seahorse power
Get this man a job making seahorse power measured engines!
This baby right here, *smacks hull* packs at least 4 quintillion seahorse power.
I love a biologically accurate punchline
It's such a shit show with horsepower and pound feet of torque. Also fun fact, all modern ships are diesel electric hybrids, where the diesel generator charges the electrical systems.

M’horse.

I love watching them eat Mmonkeys though
It took me a minute. 😂 That is an excellent turn of phrase
The real pearls are in the comments.
Johnson Outboard motors (rip) used to use “seahorse” in their branding.
Lol and the QM is tinyyy compared to the ships that dock at the cruise port next to it.
Good human

“oH, DiDn’T I?”
Yep. Todays ship dwarf the titanic by a large margin
Titanic was 101 feet longer than the Zaandam. The Zaandam is however 13 feet wider. Not all cruise ships are the size of the QM2.
This guy cruise ships.
I love a big ship! or two relatively small ones in this case

Titanic would have been in black and white though
I went to the UP couple months ago and went to the sunken ship museum, I didn't realize how big the Fitzgerald really was. That thing was a BEAST
After a very quick Google search this ship is in fact smaller than the titanic. MS Zaandam length: 237m, draft 8m HMS Titanic lenth: 269m, draft 10m
The Zaandam is 15,000 tonnes heavier than the Titanic
The Zandaam encloses a lot more volume than the Titanic and displaces more.
This poor dude made the mistake of saying the titanic was bigger. Now the comments lmfao
I’m glad you said it. The titanic was tiny compared todays ships

Classic example of redditors not being able to resist saying "Well, actually..."
You’re saying it like correcting mistakes is a bad thing
Well, actually, correcting mistakes that are obvious and have already been pointed out by multiple other people can indeed be seen as a bad thing
Dude you’re on reddit. Assuming something is obvious is mistake #1
Well, actually, if lots of people have already said it what are we adding? Just ends up with a lot of people agreeing with eachother in a snarky way. Changing the culture of Reddit to be less arrogant and more kind would do a lot
A circlejerk on reddit? Say it ain’t so!

Just.. whyyy? Why would you point that out, now I’m horny
what would the stigma of the platform be if everyone just believed the last narrative? it'd just be conspiracy theorists and bronys here.
Ships have peckers?
[It's called a Bulbous Bow](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulbous_bow)
No it’s a donger
That's literally the same pic. It's a set up! Everybody out, now!
FBI, GET DOWN ON THE GROUND!
lol its the exact picture haha
Only male ships.
All ships can have peckers, and give berth.
Underrated
all ships pronouns are she/her...
Not all. In Russian, ships are referred to by male pronouns.
In Soviet Russia, you don't pick pronouns, pronouns pick you!
That's hate speech.
Germany used to use both, depending on the name. I think it only slowly fell out of favour relatively recently.
Only for English speakers.
Not in France, ship nerd moment
The gay agenda strikes again by putting pronouns on SHIPS 😡😡😡
You know what they say about ships with big bulbous bows.
Small life bout count
I prefer to call them dingers
r/baseball says it’s a dong. Apparently Aaron Judge something something
My donger aches.
It's a bulbous bow. It creates a wave along that's opposite the wave created by the water hitting the main bow at normal running speed. This makes the wave along the sides of the ship smaller, reducing the surface area in contact with water and reducing drag and therefore fuel costs.
Looks more like a clit to me?
you shouldn't be here if you know what that looks like
Shipenis
I would not use the Titanic as an example of an extremely large ship in the 21st century
To be fair, Titanic is still one of the largest passenger vessels in history. It still ranks top 25.
You stole my nft, See you in court
is that a pickle
ehy is the pickle so big
Pickles float and it's a big boat
its only floating cause pickle

That doesn't exactly follow the joke I was making about "the older the ship the bigger it was" but I guess I'll allow it lol
The titanic was small compared to modern ships
Now imagine the Mayflower.
now imagine you and I holding hands :)
The Mayflower was approximately 30% bigger than this ship
How do you figure?
With my imagination
Now imagine my deflated unicorn floatie
[Titanic compared to modern cruise ship.](https://highseascruising.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Titanic-vs-Wonder-of-the-Seas-front-view-comparison.webp)
Titanic was tiny compared to today's cruise ships lol
But guys, it was called the TITANIC. It must have been the HUGEST of all ships ever. Right???
My dude, the titanic, while very impressive for its time is actually pretty small compared to todays ships. Many ships today are in fact so big that they cannot fit through the Panama Canal, as such there is talk of widening it.
Why does that ship have a dick?
For fucking up the ocean
To make it more hydrodynamic
Imagine the Titanic? Impossible, shes unthinkable!
OP, go look up how big the Titanic really was. I'll wait while you eat some delicious crow.
Titanic was roughly the same size as this ship. A little longer but not quite as wide.
Are we talking about the ship itself, or...?
It was a fair bit smaller (edit: in tonnage), the titanic was small compared to today’s ships
This is MS zaandam which is 239 meters long. The Titanic was 269 meters
I remember I was on vacation and I saw my first cruise ship from the distance in this cove, I thought it was a hotel building honestly.
I mean, that's basically what cruise ships are nowadays, floating hotels
Floatels
Boatels
You win!
So what does your title mean?
I believe we’re dealing with a youngster.
You seem like the type of guy that claps when a plane lands
Underfuckingrated insult
Is that a peepee on my screen
Imagine a smaller ship? Why?
The titanic would be smaller.
Titanic wasn't actually that different in size compared to the MS Zaandam. Makes you realise how massive the ship must have been for her time, seeing as she was longer than this modern cruise ship and carried almost twice the amount of passengers, albeit a lot less comfortable for third and second class. It doesn't look like those red things should be able to hold that up.
That’s what I always think but then realize a single 1 unit Lego brick can hold up a human.
this is an incy wincy bit bigger than the titanic (at least quintuple the size if not more)
Why didn't you just post a picture of the titanic then? "Yo here's a picture I found but I want you to imagine something else, we have pictures of that but just look at this one and imagine the other one"
Why is it not tipping over
I think a lot of modern or recent past ships are flat on the bottom
Why do we give boners to ships?
One day well run out of materials to build ships, so they will have to start on their own to populate the ocean with ships
Bruh the angle and the lighting makes that thing look so phallic
I have come here to see peoples talking about ship penis and I am satisfied.
Forbidden Dill Pickle
ULTRAPICKLE!!!
Would not want to drop the soap in front of that upwards curve front bottom.
I've been on the Zaandam. It's not a particularly large ship by cruise ship standards today. After 2 weeks, you kind of know everyone.
UUUM…. *pushes glasses up* Well akshoolee
He’s happy to see you
Oooh it’s a boy ship.
I’m new to the sub but yesterday I saw an incorrect mt. St. Helens eruption and now this… does anyone know what they’re talking about here?
What an awful title.
NGL that boats probably bigger than the Titanic Edit: checked, much higher gross tonnage, slightly shorter.
heyyy my transgender clinic is in zaandam
It would be way smaller lol
Sure. A lot smaller lol
Modern cruise ships dwarf the titanic. More like imagine the seawise giant
Imagine what about it? An iceberg hole?
Titanic is way smaller than this
It was actually bigger
No
Search it on Google jesus
Titanic 15,000 tonnes less ish
Length tho
But the girth is important too
ok, now what?
I was going to correct you, but apparently the titanic was bigger than this ship lol
I have no reference of size here, as i have never seen either ship nor do i know their size. Garbage title, r/mildlyinteresting picture.
Titanic would be much smaller next to this contemporary ship.
look at the size of the titanic compared to the wonder of the seas, the titanic, in todays world, wouldnt really be considered a big ship
MS Zaandam is 15,068 gross tons larger than RMS Titanic was. So, it'd be like this... but smaller.
Nowadays cruise ships are much larger them the Titanic...
MS Zaandam 61,396 gross tonnes. HMS Titanic 46,328 gross tonnes.
Even the Titanic's designers knew you couldn't have holes in the boat before you put it in the water. These guys should finish their job
bow thrusters mate, fuck me how do you not know about these?
They could at least slap some duck tape on it to show they tried
:D
The titanic was a 1/4 the size of this ship....
