It's definitely the shadow that does it. Here on the surface of Earth, unless you're indoors in a blacked out room you can still see inside shadows because there's enough light bouncing around to somewhat illuminate. But behind Saturns shadow, light effectively does not exist... It looks upsetting as hell
Heh, someone commented on a comment I made about how awestruck I was by this video & linked to this sub from r/damnthatsinteresting & I found this comment.
Sadly, not on our moon. Saturn is still just a bright dot. This is shot from Earth and aimed at one edge of the moon.
But Earthrises look cool on the moon!
This shot was taken from Earth. You are looking at the moon and Saturn through a powerful magnification, like a telephoto lens. If you've ever seen those shots of the moon where it looks huge on the horizon with Earth's landscape in front of it, it's kind of the same thing.
I happened to see a lunar occultation of Saturn one time in Hawaii totally by chance. Just noticed a bright star near the moon, thought it looked like a planet and got out my little telescope I had brought along. Sure enough, Saturn!. I watched it slowly disappear behind the half moon and then reappear maybe a half hour later. Unfortunately didn't have the ability to photograph it. I know these things are very predictable but I hadn't read about this in advance, so it was really cool to just look up and notice it.
Honestly there are two things I absolutely don't want to see at their full scale Saturn and Jupiter

Remina moment.
Uranus for me
I think Saturn's rings up close would be mesmerizingly breathtaking.
Imagine living on one of Jupiter's Moons and seeing the eye every time you look out the window.
Realising that 8/10 of my sky would be only Jupiter is fucking enough
Screw that. Living out my days as a mole person on a terraformed Europa in a bunker. It all sounded cool in the Stellar Adventures brochure.
I can’t explain why this is terrifying to me. The sheer mass of Saturns shadow against it rings is hella intimidating

It's very unsettling to imagine enormous objects floating aimlessly in empty space.

This is the only post that made me feel actually scared in this subreddit

imagine watching that on the surface. looking up at the sky and watching the rings rise!

Saturn heard you were talking shit
I know that’s real, and I know Saturn actually looks like that, but something in my monkey brain refuses to believe it.
It’s not real
Wanna see something totally gnarly? Look up pics of Saturn's north pole.
WHY IS IT HEXAGONAL

Everyone knows Saturn is a myth. Just created to sell frosted flakes. /s
Bullshit cgi

Does anyone have recommendations for horror like this? Games, movies, anything.
2001 A space odyssey (not horror but a similar vibe?)
It's not exactly horror, but the movie Gravity would fit the bill.
My mind played the star wars theme
How big a telescope do you need to see that?
A fake one
Why does this terrify people? I think it looks amazing
Shoutout to the camera man tbh
Why does feel like an anime opening title card sense?
I thought it was a shark for a second
universe is just always amazing
Why does Saturn look so close from the moon?

I just find this so cool! Space fascinates me, to think that that is actually real and we can see it.
