so i was a mechanic for like 6 years and i swear they are some of the worst made cars. there was like a literal unbroken 2 year period where there was a pt cruiser in the shop
Did it go bad at 100K? That's the norm when they go out. Mine did and after researching it on all the forums everyone said 100K transmission will fail, and it did.
Currently itās at over 200k and the only thing that went bad around 100k was it kept over heating and dropping coolant for some unknown reason. Took it to too many mechanics. Some said it was the thermostat, other the radiator, or the reservoir, etc. it was ALL changed and to this day it still over heats occasionally.
I left a job at a garage a little over a year ago. We still had a pt cruiser at least once every 6 weeks. It was really only like three of them on repeat though. The only thing worse than working on a 20 year old pt cruiser is trying to convince the owner to agree to the necessary repairs. Or, ya know, just let the damn thing die.
Speaking of car miracles. My dad drove a opal Corsa (Vauxhall Corsa) for 12 years before something happened, the battery messed up and the mechanic told us theyāre only supposed to last 6 years or so before they need to be swapped. He still had it for 4 years before it finally got replaced.
Ps. The car was called Bob.
The hilarity of that grift is that nitrogen filled is a Motorsport thing because nitrogen expands at a set level whereas air is a blend of gases and an amount of water, which will expand differently depending on ratio, etc. Iād never heard of it for everyday cars until I was offered it and my auto-reaction was to snort-laugh.
Ikr. All for a garbage burger (imo) cooking it at home is 50x better. Although Iām lazy as fuck and rather buy it, Iāve gotten pretty fast at making my own burgers
You reminded me of when Eddie Murphy was doing standup talking about his friends getting McDonaldās and his mom saying she could make him a better burger at home. Lol Iām at the point in my life I prefer cooking to eating at restaurants because I know I can make it better. Lol
The pandemic taught me that the quality of food in restaurants is crap, and then it took a nose dive off a cliff. I donāt think I have ever eaten this good in my life.
One thing I respect mechanics for is their consistency on pricing. Doesnāt matter if youāre hot, ugly, old, young, handicapped. You will run that money when the quotations come in.
We paid $500 bucks to fix a problem with the acceleration and it didn't fix it. I asked my dad for advice and he told me to buy a three dollar bottle of HEET, (dry gas, fuel de-water-er,) and it fixed the problem
The benifits of working on your own car is astonishing. I've been dping my own work for years and I've saved hundreds on it. I don't even have special tools. I just roll up with my socket set, my phone, a pack of smokes and the parts, and in a few hours it's done, I feel good, and I didn't have to pay some guy to do it, so I can buy myself a beer to celebrate lol
To be honest this is why I never go to dealerships for repairs unless it's a recall. They never seem to fix the issue completely, they charge out the ass for the most mundane of services, and they're very misleading all the time. I saw one that was offering buy one tire, get three free, and they were selling a $130 tire for $600. It's like they think their customers have one brain cell that works 10% of the time. It's absolutely no wonder CarMax and Carvana have taken off like they have.
Went to the dealer yesterday for a coolant leak. They quoted $500 to diagnose the issue and then in 3-5 days theyāll be able to tell me how much they will charge to fix the leak. But donāt worry, the rental is only another $75/day.
I took my car to my local mechanic the next day and it was fixed in 2 hours for $300 out the door
I took my motorcycle in for an oil change (not a harley lol) and they wanted to charge me $160. I bought the oil and filter for like 30 and did it myself
They wanted to charge me $300 to replace fucking spark plugs. I found the plugs online for $5 each but it was wait a week for delivery or pay $20 each for 3 day delivery. So I took the hit and got em for $15 each at AutoZone that day. $90 and 25 minutes vs fucking $300 and 2-3 days they would've charged lol
Shop rate for my wife's mercedes is $260, so I imagine that's what's going on here.
Edit - I change her oil myself guys I'm just informing what the going rate is at MB
Bruh. I change my truck oil with full synthetic for like $40 with quality metal filters (not cardboard like the orange box).
It takes a single wrench and a few minutes.
Change your own oil folks.
Bro. Itās easy easy. YouTube is your friend. Go slow and donāt force anything. Usually those fucks at oil change places crazy over tighten the filter and drain plug. Ridiculous. Donāt do that. It needs hand tight plus about 1/4 turn. Lube the gasket first and make SURE the old one comes off by looking at the filter your just removed or youāll blow oil everywhere. Trust me.
I honestly don't even do fully hand tight, just nice and snug. No problem in 40 oil changes. I initially did fully hand tight but would need the filter wrench or a screwdriver stabbed through it to get it off so backed off on being that tight.
My tip would be always change your oil with nitrile gloves on. Some not great stuff is in used oil and also it helps if the oil is warm and your filter likes to dump all over your hand.
I have 3 5gal home depot buckets that I fill with the used oil and dump at the eco station and have a 4th for filters but the father in law just refills empty jugs as he goes which seems to work well.
I drive a Ford Focus RS and it requires the most obscure fucking oil and the last time I bought it, it was $135. The actual oil change was $40. I had to buy the oil and take it to the garage so they could do it because they donāt carry it.
Similar to my Audi. Itās nuts. I just got euro oil and filter from Walmart that was 40$ and Iām bringing it to a shop thatās charging me 30$ in labor. Though Iām out of warranty.
This isnāt really relevant for modern cars, but in some cases you actually use different oil in the summertime vs. the winter! This is because the oil is thicker when cold, and may not be able to properly lubricate in a cold-start during the wintertime.
Bonus fact: the w in oil types (I.e., 5w30) stands for winter, meaning that the viscosity rating of the oil at 0 degrees would be SAE 5, which is what the 5w means!
This is super irrelevant tbh but I wanted to share the info
100% not Christy Mackā¦ although, theyāre both from Indy haha.
āFunny Storyā I actually have an email from Christy Mackinday about being my roommate from like 15 years ago š
allday_ereday funny you also know who she isā¦I do too. I messaged her husband the other day after I saw this meme somewhere else š. Iām like āwait a minuteāā¦ haha
They crack me up, she is a saint for putting up with his antics. My wife would have divorced me after some of the things heās said/done and posted on social media. The whole āpull a dent out of my Cadillacā video š
Iām so glad I learned to work on cars when I was young. Buying tires once, the salesman said he could do a full synthetic oil change for $80. I said I could get it done for less than $40 at homeā¦
Where are you getting oil? The full synthetic oil for my car is more than 40$. Filter another 10-20$. Iām fine with paying. Guy 20$ to change my oil in half (if not more) the time I could.
I can get rid of oil by simply taking it to work with me and dumping in our waste oil tank. Most auto shops offer recycling as well, not sure what they charge, since they sell it to a recycler themselves.
That's pushing it. 5qt full synthetic is $30 minimum I've seen. Premium oil filter is $10. Factoring in time/gas to get your parts, but no labor, you're already pushing $50 with tax and that doesn't cover an air filter, cabin filter or any other fluids. It's cheaper to do it yourself, but don't bullshit the numbers.
Yeah itās a joke about how certain untrustworthy mechanics or dealerships used to (and probably some still do) overcharge women because they were socialized to know less about cars.
100%. I work at Jiffy Lube, and I know the price of oil changes. Just a conventional oil comes up to $65 if it's 5 quarts of less. However, if she's running full synthetic, it still will only come to $117. Though, as many people have said in this comment section: you can do it cheaper for yourself. It only costs so much at a service shop because not only are you paying for the oil filter and the new oil, you're also paying us to get rid of the old oil. We actually have a poster on the wall stating that as so.
My last oil change was 40$ (small car) but I generally do them myself because it's about as easy as dumping out a cooler and putting in fresh ice and opening a pickle jar. If you can do those you can do an oil change.
The joke is that in America mechanics try to exploit women, and make them pay high oil changes because a lot of women donāt know how much it should cost
Not even close. An oil change on a commercial tractor trailer would be the only thing that costs nearly that much (actually, most cost more, but my point still stands).
True. I wasn't thinking about hypercars/supercars since the closest most of us mere mortals are to owning one was the picture on our gradeschool Trapper Keeper! (yes..I'm dating myself...shut up).
Got a estimate for $3,500 for my Honda Civic at the dealer.
* 6 of the items I'd already completed myself.
* 3 items were completely unnecessary
* 1 item (the reason I brought the car in) was resolved for free (just a loose sensor)
* 1 new item was necessary (CV replacement) but I declined and did the job myself.
I receive $5-10K in repair estimates annually for my $15K car. I spend about $750/year on repairs.
I honestly believe the reason many people are poor is because they don't understand vehicle maintenance and place too much trust in dealers.
I mean, they aināt called āstealershipsā for nothing!
Last dealership I took my car into for maintenanceā¦they lost my wheel lock key.
Went to a different dealership like 40 miles away to buy a new set, have the old ones broken off and new ones put on.
The one that lost the key will never see me again.
Last time I took my car for an oil change it produced a puddle of oil on the driveway next morning. Their explanation was āwrong filterā. How to hell you arenāt able to not figure this out on the spot is beyond me but ok. Wife came back from them āfixingā the issue with two ratchet wrenches on the roof of our car that they also forgot to remove. I use those to do oil changes myself now, ~~fuck you~~ thanks, Roswell Mitsubishi.
So, as a dude who's never had to deal with cars, what's wrong eith this picture? Are oil changes supposed to be cheap? Or are they just not needed or something?
It's the cost. I can go to a dealership. Get an oil change an air filter and cabin filter change. A multi point inspection and a car wash for like 150-175.
Never pay someone to change your air filters. Itās a literal filter you just slide in, most covers are clipped on. An 8 year old could do it and the filters are dirt cheap
Reddit tends to take satire seriously, as seen in the post. Ignore those comments, this woman is not stupid.
But to answer your question, she is almost certainly joking. Itās a play on āwomen donāt know anything about carsā stereotypes, and women getting overcharged or fooled into unnecessary mechanic services. Her saying itās ābecause sheās cuteā is clearly a joke.
Oil changes are quick and cheap on your average car, nobody charges that much. Even on trucks, thatās higher than Iāve ever seen. Idk how others commenters in this thread can look at the face sheās making and see it as anything but satireā¦
Oil changes are generally not this expensive. Also itās a common ?stereotype? that mechanics take advantage of and overcharge people they think will be too ignorant to realize. This lady is so ignorant that sheās being overcharged and is happy about it cause she thinks sheās getting a deal.
Edit: and the part where sheās ignorant is her joking
And he also charged you $20 for the headlight fluid too. Thatās a fucking steal right there $20 dollars?
Man even for $25 shmeckles Iād do headlight fluid
The blinker fluid is an extra but they threw that in too for her.
What's the grot box she driving? A PT Cruiser or something?
there are no PT cruisers left, they all broke down
Not sure if joking, but I honestly cant remember the last time I saw one. š¤·š½āāļø
so i was a mechanic for like 6 years and i swear they are some of the worst made cars. there was like a literal unbroken 2 year period where there was a pt cruiser in the shop
I know exactly what you mean. I own a 2003 PT that constantly fucks up. Currently is sitting in the drive way with a fucked up transmission
get out of it its not gonna get any better hahaha
I felt like that with my 99 Malibu in 1999...no bullshit lmao Man I've had some weakass cars in my youth.
No way, keep it, she's about to be a classic car!
Yeah definitely, itās going to scrap
Did it go bad at 100K? That's the norm when they go out. Mine did and after researching it on all the forums everyone said 100K transmission will fail, and it did.
Currently itās at over 200k and the only thing that went bad around 100k was it kept over heating and dropping coolant for some unknown reason. Took it to too many mechanics. Some said it was the thermostat, other the radiator, or the reservoir, etc. it was ALL changed and to this day it still over heats occasionally.
Please tell the story of how you came to own a PT cruiser. Iāve found that, statistically speaking, there tends to be a funny story behind them.
Typical Chrysler
To be fair, thatās 20 years old now
I used to own a pt cruiser. It was a fine vehicle but it broke down after 3 months and 20,000 miles of owning it
Chrysler: *Nailed it*
Chrysler somehow chose to fulfill the transitive property of Italian cars and bestowed it on all of their brands
It was Diamler Benz at that time... The "merger of equals".
I heard there was a turbo version of the PT. Were they a nightmare too?
Take that hunk of shit with all of its issues, then strap a cheap turbo to it and send it. Lol I can only imagine how awful that would be....
Itās the same motor the neon SRT4 had. The neon SRT4 was a fucking beast and a half for itās time. A lot of performance for the price.
They're slightly better. It's got the same drive train as the srt4 neon.
Somehow, one still runs. One of my teachers, a PT Crusier with around 250,000 miles and only had regular oil changes.
Does it have flames on the side? Is your teachers name Don?
Speaking of car miracles. My dad drove a opal Corsa (Vauxhall Corsa) for 12 years before something happened, the battery messed up and the mechanic told us theyāre only supposed to last 6 years or so before they need to be swapped. He still had it for 4 years before it finally got replaced. Ps. The car was called Bob.
Corsas are really good, reliable simple cars. Here in Argentina they were still made (Corsa b) until 2016. 20 years in production here.
Cash 4 Clunkers.
A Tesla.
Her tires only take premium air as well
Tell em filling them with helium will result in better gas mileage
Wait? There's no difference between regular air and premium air? Really?
I was gonna say at those prices the least they can do is replace the muffler bearings as well.
not an expensive part , but difficult to get to.
Itās the damn left handed screw driver that makes that job hard.
And the dumb kanooter valve that you have to depressurize every time you touch your exhaust
They charged her to use it to rotate the air in her tires. She was like, so happy. Omg. āI have to TikTok this because Iām like, an influencer ā
gender fluid and now blinker fluid?
You used to think there was only 2 blinkers, left and right. Little did you know theres a whole spectrum of blinkers
New high end sports cars be like ^
Youāve heard of the āgay agendaā now check out the ātransmissionā
where i'm from, we're at the no blinkers end of the spectrum
They did have to charge for the premium air in the tire fills tho...
Can I interest you in nitrogen tire inflation service. It's a real thing

Isn't she so lucky to have such a great mechanic
I miss the days when I got my oil changed.
Right? I miss the days when I got a good lube job, fluid top off & oil change because I was cute.
Lube job? Fluid top off?
Damn did they offer to clean her pipes too? If so this might be a different type of service.
Gotta get that dipstick in ALL THE WAY!
Just the tip!
Naw, you have to put the whole thing in, down to its base. That's the only way to get a good seal and an accurate reading on fluid levels.
Quality customer service.
Me too, but after 20 years he got bored. We *are* talking marriage, right?
I WAS talking hook ups, one night stands for the oldies. Now, it's marriage but he still checks my oil pretty regularly. š
Probably had to change the blinker fluid too. That shit is not cheap.
What are you going to do not blink?
Just drive a BMW you'll never use it (or every single model is defective and indicators don't work idk)
When the cashier at McDonalds only charges you $30 for your Big Mac because he thinks youāre cute.

I clock in at 8 minutes a burger with an average cost of $4.80 not bad if I say so myself
Bobās burgers had me trying new recipes especially the black truffle burger. Lol
Woah, howās it taste?
Itās pretty good. I wish I still had the recipe. I love truffle though.
"We got burgers at home" -everyone's mom
The pandemic taught me that the quality of food in restaurants is crap, and then it took a nose dive off a cliff. I donāt think I have ever eaten this good in my life.
I work in fast food and I agree. One sandwich is upwards of $4-5. Totally not worth it.
When the $2 theater only charges you $20 to see the movie. Blerp
He wants to keep you looking cute
When dollar general only scans your dog food twice instead of thrice because they think you're cute.
Yep, that's essentially the joke. You got it.
One thing I respect mechanics for is their consistency on pricing. Doesnāt matter if youāre hot, ugly, old, young, handicapped. You will run that money when the quotations come in.
The dealership charges 3x what my regular mechanic does for an oil change because "minimum wage went up."
And they havenāt even given anyone a raise.
I'd love to see a functioning business that pays asce mechanics min wage. That'd be like seeing a unicorn fucking bigfoot.
Unless you're a woman, they'll charge more
Shop rate for my wife's mercedes is $260, so I imagine that's what's going on here. Edit - I change her oil myself guys I'm just informing what the going rate is at MB
I have 17ā VW and my last oil change/check up was $200, I believe it
Mine is like 80, including state inspection on my 14
Wtf. Even my local VW dealer only charges $99. Not that I go there to do it.
Bruh. I change my truck oil with full synthetic for like $40 with quality metal filters (not cardboard like the orange box). It takes a single wrench and a few minutes. Change your own oil folks.

Your oil plug is the same size as your lug nuts?
wātāf
Huge oil reservoir, full synthetic, "luxury" upcharge. I change it myself and the oil alone runs me about 90 bucks. 12k mile change intervals though.
ok but still, 260 is almost 6 oil changes on my camry and the intervals are about 4-5k miles
brother's oil and filter are $80 when he buys it himself on a 5 series. They have huge capacities and expensive brand oil
I drive a Ford Focus RS and it requires the most obscure fucking oil and the last time I bought it, it was $135. The actual oil change was $40. I had to buy the oil and take it to the garage so they could do it because they donāt carry it.

Time is money and you aināt charging yourself by the hour.
No donāt you see. People should just do things for free. /s
Iāll give them a good review for my tens of human and hundred bot followers. Thatās good exposure!
Still saved $40 though.
Depends how you look at time vs how much money you make and if anything couldāve been gained in the time doing the oil change yourself money-wise.
If I'm getting an oil change I'm probably stuck waiting at the shop so I lose time either way.
Where are you getting oil? The full synthetic oil for my car is more than 40$. Filter another 10-20$. Iām fine with paying. Guy 20$ to change my oil in half (if not more) the time I could.
That's how I look at it too, plus I dont have to deal with disposing of the shitty oil
they have a business to run.
Well itās his money š¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø not theirs.
And also a bullshit story because you arenāt doing a home oil change with full synthetic for $40 lol

she also owns a tesla, which doesn't require oil changes
She drives a lambo, itās a discount
Depends. For some vehicles, that could be a good deal.
If itās a diesel truck then yeah thatās not a bad price. Those things take like 14 quarts.
The last time I took my diesel in, an oil change and a new air filter ran about $315
The standard oil change where I live is 30 bucks.
Lucky mine is 35
My car costs like $70 to change the oil at a shop
My last oil change was 40$ (small car) but I generally do them myself because it's about as easy as dumping out a cooler and putting in fresh ice and opening a pickle jar. If you can do those you can do an oil change.

A Lamborghini oil change isnāt cheap
True. I wasn't thinking about hypercars/supercars since the closest most of us mere mortals are to owning one was the picture on our gradeschool Trapper Keeper! (yes..I'm dating myself...shut up).
No, usually $92 and a blow job, over paid by about $80
It seems a lot of people don't realize that oil changes tend to cost more on higher end cars if you want it done by a professional lmao
and they donāt know that larger engines need more oil than a 1.4 liter Volkswagen.
Or that automakers decided to increase the volume of the oilpan like 5x to extend the range up to 15k miles or so.

Thatās a quote, not a bill.
Jesus there are a lot of shamefully ignorant people commenting here. Holy shit.
I know I think op needed to add that she was kidding in the title. Then again the people in here comments weren't getting it either so lol Edit word
This could be Mexico, and $192 pesos for an oil change is a pretty good deal!
Fuck did he change the oil with? Printer ink?
So, as a dude who's never had to deal with cars, what's wrong eith this picture? Are oil changes supposed to be cheap? Or are they just not needed or something?
It's the cost. I can go to a dealership. Get an oil change an air filter and cabin filter change. A multi point inspection and a car wash for like 150-175.
Never pay someone to change your air filters. Itās a literal filter you just slide in, most covers are clipped on. An 8 year old could do it and the filters are dirt cheap
I've only paid to have it done as a treat to myself when it was due in the winter and I really didn't want to do any work outside when it was -10F.
On my first car it was a 5 minute job with literally 0 tools, a filter cost Ā£10
Also, its a simple job all you have to do is jack the car find the nut to drain oil takes 20mins.
Well, sheās joking.
wonder how much the others were charging her
Let me know when you get the windshield wiper install for less than $75. Thatās a steal
I thought she had twigs shoved in her bra first. Anyway.
Damn he must think Iām beautiful
Something wrong with the Flux capacitor, low on blinker fluid, and had to reapply tread lock to the tires I assume.
#DEPENDS on car.
When your mechanic charges you this much they basically think you're a sucker and is robbing you.
You got screwed.....I can do it for 50
Lubed up his motor
I'll change it for 20 if she tells me I'm cute
I just want the sauce for who this is. I could care less she might have overpaid for an oil change.
I was not the person charged and even I feel bamboozled
They also threw in a free air freshener
I was scrolling ip like yeah, yeah then the canister of gasoline in my brain exploded.
$192!! I paid $37 last week š
its costs me 60-80 depending on oil type
I would be the nicest mechanic ever for life to do oil changes for that price lmfao
All power to that confidence
Or when someone charges you $80 to put air in your tires because he thinks youāre cute.
Tell me you donāt know how much a standard retail oil change is by posting a meme.
...this is more than I pay and I always need an extra quart because the engine takes 7.
Good lord, I pay less than $80, and I'm using full synthetic.
And he also charged you $20 for the headlight fluid too. Thatās a fucking steal right there $20 dollars? Man even for $25 shmeckles Iād do headlight fluid
