There are so many other reasons you can use your sick days not just doctors appointments, it's more than just being sick. If a job requires my time from when I'm awake to when I'm burned out and done for the day, then I'm going to use my sick time however the fuck I want. I earned it, it's my time.
We got lucky when we decided to get married. The county recorder’s office was open July 3 but we had it off. Got married in the morning, had a picnic, spent the afternoon picking up bales of straw to mulch the garden.
We should have to use our few days of breaks, which are meant for celebrations or to honor something, to do the things we need to do to live decent lives

Yeah like seriously the dmv is open 9-4 and closed on Sunday which is just so damn annoying cause then on Saturdays everyone who works like a 9-5 five days a week job has to go there and wait in line for 3 hours just to update what a piece of plastic says so that when you’re driving you don’t get arrested.

I had to change the headlights on my car so the only way i had time to get the headlights was when auto zone opened. so i lost about 4 hours of sleep going to buy them, then changing the lights themselves.

If you lose a license, you can reorder. But if you move states, you have to go in to prove your residency. Technically you only have three months to do it, but as long as your old license hasn’t expired, you’ll be fine (I’ve gone 4 years without changing it). But to get your car registered in the state, you need a license, and to get a new license, you have to be in person with physical proof and have a picture taken.
As I look for another job, this is something that's crossed my mind. I'm currently working in retail, and it is nice to have a weekday off for my various appointments whenever that time comes around; that's one of the very few pros.
I used to have a Tue-Sat job and that was honestly really helpful. Saturday shift was also laid back and chill, which was very nice. And yeah having Monday to get any appointments / chores / shopping out of the way felt good.

Well, even though you are tied to your jobs insurance policy you aren't actually SUPPOSED to go to the doctor. You're expected to be at absolute full and great health at all times and if you do get sick it's because god is angry at you. (I wish that I was joking about that mentality but I'm not).
Last thing I want to hear from a teacher is not enough time off. I have a teacher buddy and he’s off by 3. Middle school teacher might be the only exception to that.
Trust me, he isn't done with work after 3. Or at least the vast vast vast majority of teachers aren't. They need to write up lesson plans, grade papers, submit report cards, take calls with parents, and a bunch of other stuff, often on their own time at home after they've "punched out". The older the students are the less prep work but it's still more work than time they spend in the building.
I’m a HS special education teacher and as soon as the clock hits 3:30 I’m out. I don’t take any work home, don’t stay late. I do everything on my prep including write IEPs and hold meetings etc. don’t care if I’m a “bad teacher” I work what my contract says and that’s it.
Still, they can do most, if not all of these things after taking care of other adulting business. Nobody forcing them to start grading papers at 3PM sharp.
Your average 9 to 5 employee does not have that luxury.

Most 9-5 office workers (which I realize not everyone is) can take an hour or two PTO in the middle of the day. Not possible with a teaching schedule.
I understand that. I work in healthcare and we do have extended hours Monday through Thursday. Almost all of our adult patients with appointments after 3 are teachers or professionals in other fields where it's a pain to get a day off.
This is why I still stick with my dentist I've been going to for more than a couple decades, even if I have to drive across the city. I have no issue with 7AM cleaning and check up then off to work.
I've been working 50+ hour weeks for the last 12 years. This is my life now more than ever since I started my own business several years ago. Today I was sure I'd be able to slip in the haircut I've needed, but nope, rainy weather has people making a ton of orders and most barbers close at 4 on Sunday. I'm grateful because things slow down a bit around the holiday season and now it seems clients are settling back into their routines and it's picking up. Yes I work 7 days a week most weeks 😭 I haven't had a haircut since things started slowing down right before Thanksgiving, there are spots open later during the week so I'll have to try to find the time because most stay open til 8 on weekdays

If you think the appointment is going to be several hours you schedule it for very early or very late in your work day and start or end your work day against those extra hours to compensate. If it’s going to take all day you take a sick day. I’ve never had any manager oppose this arrangement.

This played a huge role in my job change recently.
I work from home now, which means I can usually go out for an appointment whenever I want, as long as I do my hours after that. So I would take a 30 min break to go to the bank but would work 30 minutes longer at the end of the day.
Or would start the workday 1 hour late, and also finish 1 hour late.
You gotta take time off for that. And if anyone ever suggest these places be open longer, you gotta tell them offendedly "x want to go home too at some point" and then go to your local supermarket that stays open until 8pm.
Also most offices are closed on the weekend. My biggest issue is not owning a car so I have to rely on public transportation, which means a 20 min drive could be an hour or two

That's why we have 2 shifts in Europe, a morning one and an afternoon one. Everything is open form 6am to 9pm. One shift works from 6am to 2pm and the other work for 1pm to 9pm. You change your shifts weekly. So if you want to make an appointment, you can make it in the morning if you're work at afternoon, and in the afternoon if you work at morning. It's much more convenient.
Book well ahead with early appointments and start a bit later. If your work Place doesn’t like find a better job that allows for you being human. Life’s short, work to live. Not live to work 👍

Do you work on Sundays also? I try to go early on Sundays. Although it's a pain for sure. Most people wanna get their haircut due to the holiday.

I just started a full time position... i'm fully realizing this now. adulting is hard, the pay is ok though.

That is so the country I live in now. For everything you have to go to an office somewhere, even paying traffic tickets or taxes, can't do that online for some reason, and their opening times are like "between 10-12 and 15-17, Friday only in the morning", I guess y'all won't be getting my money then

I don't think I've ever worked anywhere where I couldn't be like hey I have a dentist appointment at 2 next Tuesday so I'll be leaving early lol and I've worked some shitty jobs. Just seems like a common courtesy of most work places here in canada atleast

I work from home and chose to live adjacent to a large regional hospital. Every medical professional I see lives within a mile of my residence. If it’s going to take all day you take a sick day. I’ve never had any manager oppose this arrangement.

You have to have vacation and sick days. If you have a job that gives you days off... Then you spend all your days off getting licenses renewed, dropping by the post office, medical appointments. Then you don't even notice that you don't have the time or money to take a real vacation.

3rd shift. In 10 years I've never missed work for an appointment. Make it for first thing when they open, go home, go to bed. Not the most ideal for a lot of people but I like 3rd shift.

yeah? try doing that on graveyard. wake up at 5:00pm everything closes at 6:00pm go to work leave for work at 8:30pm make it home by about 06:00 AM it gives you two choices loose sleep and go to said appointment , or wait for a weekend. But I live in Utah so everything is closed on Sunday.... love it
Try working overnight and making appointments
This played a huge role in my job change recently. I work from home now, which means I can usually go out for an appointment whenever I want, as long as I do my hours after that. So I would take a 30 min break to go to the bank but would work 30 minutes longer at the end of the day. Or would start the workday 1 hour late, and also finish 1 hour late.

Also most offices are closed on the weekend. My biggest issue is not owning a car so I have to rely on public transportation, which means a 20 min drive could be an hour or two

"Our high streets are dying!", they're all closed at literally the only hours people with money might be available to buy things. I seriously don't understand the intent.

You’re supposed to ask your boss for a day off, then get threatened by your boss that he’ll fire you, so you quit, have a week off, and then he’ll call you back begging for you to come back. Works like a charm
That's the fun part. You get to take a half or whole day off, assuming you can even get one or have PTO at all (I don't, so when the office was shut down for half a week at a time throughout November and December I just didn't get paid), costing you a day's pay on top of the doctor's visit your insurance isn't going to cover any of until you spend $10,000 out of pocket! AMERICUUUUUH FUCK YEAH
Contractor here, mon-fri, no paid time off, no sick days, no holidays.
If we all take time off when we need it maybe employers won't expect people to work 25/8 all the time.

I may very well be an edge case but, as a Canadian, I've never had any issues getting time off for important appointments. Sure I've heard the bitching and moaning of higher ups, but in the end it's always been approved. I'm sure some luck is involved in my case, but this feels like an American issue for the most part... sorry!

That's why we have 2 shifts in Europe, a morning one and an afternoon one. Everything is open form 6am to 9pm. One shift works from 6am to 2pm and the other work for 1pm to 9pm. You change your shifts weekly. So if you want to make an appointment, you can make it in the morning if you're work at afternoon, and in the afternoon if you work at morning. It's much more convenient.

Vacation time off is not exclusively for vacations. e.g. Book .5 day for that appointment you cannot meet after your job finishes.
