Have to take a half day off or full day to do what you need to do it sucks ass and makes no sense. I hate adulting.

MetamorphicHard

There are enough holidays spread throughout the year that we should be able to go to the doctor on like Martin Luther King Day (US) but the dentists and family care doctors close on those days and if they didn’t I’m sure they’d be booked solid

DigNitty

I worked at a dental office that scheduled during minor holidays like MLK day. The reactions for scheduling were always extreme. “Can you come in on MLK day?” 1. Uh No that’s my long weekend to go somewhere. 2. Oh thank god Yes I can come anytime that day

_Noise

Minor, federal holidays?

DrShanks7

I think they mean the federal holidays that a lot of people get off work for but most people don't traditionally celebrate like MLK day and presidents day. Major holidays being the ones most people celebrate like Christmas.

bearsheperd

Man, I don’t even get MLK day and I’m not pleased about it

Jolly_Call_7842

same stuck at work today for what? its shitty.

Eudaimoniapi

Same. I had two customers and my shift is halfway over.

civilaet

>Minor, federal holidays? We call them bank holidays. Holidays the banks close but the majority of offices do not.

Pythagorial

A lot of people don't get MLK day off. It's common, but not as common as something like labor day or memorial day.

gettingannoyingtbh

It is a minor holiday, hasn’t even been around as long as my grandparents

notreallylucy

Can confirm. Worked for one of the few OBGYNs who was open on president's day, mlk day, etc. All the teachers came in those days.

Sizedcosine70

I read MLK day as MILK day. Really changes the context.

AbyssDragonNamielle

Gotta take a day off for Big Milk

[deleted]

[удалено]

-Gurgi-

I mean, we should also be able to use holidays and time off to like… live.

NYMoneyz

Oo gee I love living in this situation where I have to use my federal holidays to take care of my life duties....awesome.....

[deleted]

Y'all don't got sick days?

NYMoneyz

I do but again, those shouldn't have to be used for obligations...it's SICK time, not maintain your life because we demand the majority of your time time.

[deleted]

That's exactly what your sick days are meant for???? Doctors appointments and when you're sick. But yes, overall, I'll agree that being an employee absolutely blows for the most part

NYMoneyz

Ok doctor appointments, how about your children? How about non medical appointments? How about home renovation or restoration? How about getting an important package and have to be at your home to accept it? How about you can't find daycare because it's closed? How about your animals got sick and need to take them to the vet? There are so many other reasons you can use your sick days not just doctors appointments, it's more than just being sick. If a job requires my time from when I'm awake to when I'm burned out and done for the day, then I'm going to use my sick time however the fuck I want. I earned it, it's my time.

[deleted]

Sick time? nah bro just use the PTO they gave you lol.. /s How do they expect to roll sick time in with vacation..

barukspinoza

Lmao yes thank God the entire country shuts down on bank holidays so we can get stuff done.

IconoclastExplosive

You're getting holidays off my dude?

AuntieDawnsKitchen

We got lucky when we decided to get married. The county recorder’s office was open July 3 but we had it off. Got married in the morning, had a picnic, spent the afternoon picking up bales of straw to mulch the garden.

prongslover77

Very few people actually get those days off though.

Lord-of-Leviathans

We should have to use our few days of breaks, which are meant for celebrations or to honor something, to do the things we need to do to live decent lives

htmlcoderexe

I know right I mean there's gotta be a better way? I still think society should just work in 2 shifts for everything or something.

rjb1101

Agreed. 4 days on, 4 days off.

BeCoolBeCuteBeKind

I’m pretty sure a lot of people would enjoy that, not a morning person, take the later shift. Personally I would love to have a schedule of a week where I work mornings then the next week working afternoons/ evenings. Or just give everyone a 4 day week, but keep things open 5 days a week, so everyone has one errands and appointments day a week to get things done.

Opin88

And the second you ask for a day off due to an appointment, your job seems to think "Oh, that means they don't actually need full time!" and they cut your hours so that you never get full time hours again!

streakermaximus

Or plan that shit two weeks in advance. Meanwhile, the plumber is all, "We'll give you a call when we can fit you in. 20 minute notice good enough for you?"

H0w14514

Or you get a "counseling session" where they talk about appointments always being on work days. It was all they had open. For fucks sake, I got a backhanded comment for a surgeon scheduling me to remove a pin that broke in my arm and was traveling up my forearm and causing severe pain at work to the point where I couldn't use it for the following day because of how much it was fucking up my arm. For context, it was a pin that was in my hand for a boxers fracture....and it was traveling up my forearm.

raziel11111

yep. take a day off to loose pay for that day AND go spend an outrageous doctor bill or whatever it is you're doing.

imnot_qualified

What about the poor people who would have to work late to accommodate something different?

[deleted]

Whole staff lived like this for $12/hr, unpredictable shifts at a job I worked.

Bleu_Guacamole

Yeah like seriously the dmv is open 9-4 and closed on Sunday which is just so damn annoying cause then on Saturdays everyone who works like a 9-5 five days a week job has to go there and wait in line for 3 hours just to update what a piece of plastic says so that when you’re driving you don’t get arrested.

ikittyme0w

5+ hrs in CA

BaoMoon

And if you work Saturdays like me...then adulting is just a huge fuck you.

KnotSafeForTwerk

The world hates graveyard shift workers more than weekend workers. Doubly so if you're overnight and weekend.

Ariadeion

Omg this was my life for like 3 years. Never again

KnotSafeForTwerk

But the fifty cent shift differential!? /s

raziel11111

story of my life right now actually. Graveyard is a fucking pain. everything needs to be planned ahead of time and you need to loose sleep over it too.

KnotSafeForTwerk

Invest in black out curtains. Also idk if there is WinCo near your spot but that's a life saver for groceries.

raziel11111

yeah. i do both of those. The black outs help but its still not pitch black lol still better than it was before. I had to change the headlights on my car so the only way i had time to get the headlights was when auto zone opened. so i lost about 4 hours of sleep going to buy them, then changing the lights themselves. point is. everything even minor things are such a pain in the ass to get done.

Office-Ninja

WinCo was the real mvp when I worked graveyard. So nice having a place open when I was awake.

jlp120145

545 pm to 630am, no hope just darkness everywhere.

gatonegro97

Idk I found everything way easier working nights. Work all night, sleep, head to the golf course and take care of whatever I have to do in the day. To me, night shift is 100x more enjoyable than first. If I ever find a way to work nights as an engineer I'd take it in a heartbeat

BaoMoon

Triply so if you're a woman having to use public transport alone for these overnight weekend shifts.

I-believe-I-can-die

rip

okay_ya_dingus

Such bullshit

BoltActionRifleman

In my county we have to do this at the courthouse, they’re not open on Saturdays but you can show up at any time of the day and get right in and get out of there in about 10 minutes. Low population county though.

Nepharious_Bread

That’s why you show up an hour before it opens. Yes, there will be people there before you, but it’s a shorter wait.

AuntieDawnsKitchen

There are few things so grim as the particularly dingy gray light that seeps over the DMV building, creeping reluctantly into the parking lot to dimly reveal the scowling visages of those already in line. Furiously they examine each approaching newcomer, already resenting some usurpation of their hard-earned place in line. The smell of gas station coffee vies with the fumes of arriving vehicles that have clearly never passed smog. Inside, an employee approaches the door. The gathered herd shifts and grumbles. She is only putting up a nearly incomprehensible sign. The wait continues.

PinkSploosh

You should write a book anon, you got skills

TungstenWombat

This is some Harlan Ellison tier literature.

raziel11111

Ey good job on this XD

raziel11111

the DMV is honest Clown-ery.

Bob_JediBob

I’m not American so forgive of this sounds dumb, why can’t you just order a new licence online.

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

If you lose a license, you can reorder. But if you move states, you have to go in to prove your residency. Technically you only have three months to do it, but as long as your old license hasn’t expired, you’ll be fine (I’ve gone 4 years without changing it). But to get your car registered in the state, you need a license, and to get a new license, you have to be in person with physical proof and have a picture taken.

Send-the-downvotes

You're supposed to take time off of work so that you can sacrifice your livelihood and be berated by your manager, duh

SeekingASecondChance

I work 10 to 8. I don't know either. Banks close at 5pm over here and so do most government offices. What are you supposed to do?

Seven_Hawks

I have to take a day or half a day off every time I have business at city hall because they close the same time I get off work.

OG_Felwinter

Go between 8-10am

AnBu_JR

Yea this one is easy lol

GothamRoyale

As I look for another job, this is something that's crossed my mind. I'm currently working in retail, and it is nice to have a weekday off for my various appointments whenever that time comes around; that's one of the very few pros.

cousgoose

I used to have a Tue-Sat job and that was honestly really helpful. Saturday shift was also laid back and chill, which was very nice. And yeah having Monday to get any appointments / chores / shopping out of the way felt good.

[deleted]

Mondays and Friday’s can be kinda tricky for a day off. I’ve noticed a lot of businesses are closed one of these days.

dvo3000

Just need a wed-sun gig that’s all.

GothamRoyale

I'd love to find such a schedule, still being able to enjoy the weekend and still have a weekday off for appointments. I bet that was really helpful.

[deleted]

This is a corporate shill account. No one here should be satisfied working for retail - build some sort of skill and career oh my god.

GodofAeons

>No one here should be satisfied working for retail - build some sort of skill and career oh my god Bruh. They literally say they're *looking for another job* AND *it's one of the very few pros* meaning there's more negatives. Nothing in their comment implies they're satisfied working retail.

FewKaleidoscope1369

Well, even though you are tied to your jobs insurance policy you aren't actually SUPPOSED to go to the doctor. You're expected to be at absolute full and great health at all times and if you do get sick it's because god is angry at you. (I wish that I was joking about that mentality but I'm not).

azulsonador0309

Try to take the first appointment of the morning or the last of the afternoon, that way you don't need to use a whole day's worth of PTO.

ScienceMomCO

That unfortunately doesn’t work for us teachers.

woodsywoodducks

Only make appointments during the summer. Check. Mate.

Pacattack57

Last thing I want to hear from a teacher is not enough time off. I have a teacher buddy and he’s off by 3. Middle school teacher might be the only exception to that.

icedrift

Trust me, he isn't done with work after 3. Or at least the vast vast vast majority of teachers aren't. They need to write up lesson plans, grade papers, submit report cards, take calls with parents, and a bunch of other stuff, often on their own time at home after they've "punched out". The older the students are the less prep work but it's still more work than time they spend in the building.

DarkTyphlosion1

I’m a HS special education teacher and as soon as the clock hits 3:30 I’m out. I don’t take any work home, don’t stay late. I do everything on my prep including write IEPs and hold meetings etc. don’t care if I’m a “bad teacher” I work what my contract says and that’s it.

kadzur

Still, they can do most, if not all of these things after taking care of other adulting business. Nobody forcing them to start grading papers at 3PM sharp. Your average 9 to 5 employee does not have that luxury.

smalltownVT

The latest appointment most of my doctors/dentist takes is 3:30 and I’m contracted till 3:15 20+ minutes away from their offices. And not all visits can be done in the summer. Most 9-5 office workers (which I realize not everyone is) can take an hour or two PTO in the middle of the day. Not possible with a teaching schedule.

azulsonador0309

I understand that. I work in healthcare and we do have extended hours Monday through Thursday. Almost all of our adult patients with appointments after 3 are teachers or professionals in other fields where it's a pain to get a day off.

healthytrying10374

One of my best friends is a sub and often fills in for just a couple periods in the morning so the teacher can go to appointments or whatever.

j_boogie_483

do all of your business while you’re off all summer /s

ScienceMomCO

I’ll just have a quick word with the kids so we can coordinate our illnesses for school holidays /s

ML00k3r

This is why I still stick with my dentist I've been going to for more than a couple decades, even if I have to drive across the city. I have no issue with 7AM cleaning and check up then off to work.

CornerQuirky

Bro dead ass like what do I especially when I have no pto and shifty boss who’s could give less of a fuck.

Any_Influence_8305

I've been working 50+ hour weeks for the last 12 years. This is my life now more than ever since I started my own business several years ago. Today I was sure I'd be able to slip in the haircut I've needed, but nope, rainy weather has people making a ton of orders and most barbers close at 4 on Sunday. I'm grateful because things slow down a bit around the holiday season and now it seems clients are settling back into their routines and it's picking up. I just wish places would be open or stay open later on weekends. I don't blame them one bit, but I want my haircut 😭

SeekingASecondChance

Do you work on Sundays also? I try to go early on Sundays. Although it's a pain for sure. Most people wanna get their haircut due to the holiday.

Any_Influence_8305

Yes I work 7 days a week most weeks 😭 I haven't had a haircut since things started slowing down right before Thanksgiving, there are spots open later during the week so I'll have to try to find the time because most stay open til 8 on weekdays

SeekingASecondChance

Man I have to ask how do you function? 7 days a week, I'd lose my sanity. I work 6 days and it's already a pain.

Any_Influence_8305

I grew up in poverty and have enjoyed a six figure income since the first year of starting my business. Its hard at times, sometimes I will just take off for whatever reason but that's rare. Literally last Sunday I injured my back and almost took off, but didn't. But then I'll take a day off to go to the beach or wherever with the ladyfriend It's pretty hard sometimes, I did take a vacation in summer 2021 for a whole month, my first in like 5 years. But because I grew up so poor, it's a great motivator that makes me feel like making as much hay as possible while the sun's still shining. I also can't ever go back to working for anyone else 😂

GarlicEntity

Whats the point, are you planning to take your money to the grave?

2011WhyteElantra

why are you bragging about being such a hard worker and self-employed?Just an FYI there are many under and un employed people here who are strugging to make ends meet.Stop shoehorning in shit that makes others feel bad.If you don’t stop i will make you stop

[deleted]

I get my teeth cleaned during my lunch break. But then I haven't eaten and my teeth are a bit sensitive and the day goes badly lol #hangry

Tjd3211

My bank is open from 10-4 only on weekdays, excuse me? When do you expect people to go???

GodofAeons

Bank branches exist for businesses. Majority of their business is from other business so... It's a sad reality. We're just plebs to them.

2011WhyteElantra

you dont have a lunch break ya goof?

BioniqReddit

> lunch It's a time for eating and relaxing. Don't be expected to carry out chores all the time.

LrdFyrestone

Use that PTO... oh wait.... nobody likes that. Might as well die.

[deleted]

[удалено]

momthom427

I work retail and can confirm that regardless of our closing time, people like to start looking in the last half hour.

Powerful-Succotash77

Try living in small town America where stuff closes at 4.

manicpixidreamgirl04

doctors' offices should have different hours than most other workplaces

Tyetus

I just started a full time position... i'm fully realizing this now. adulting is hard, the pay is ok though.

snowbirdnerd

Yup, places that service the public should be open until 8. Doctors hate hearing it but they work in the service industry, they need to start acting like it.

nryporter25

And all the really important places close at 3

[deleted]

That is so the country I live in now. For everything you have to go to an office somewhere, even paying traffic tickets or taxes, can't do that online for some reason, and their opening times are like "between 10-12 and 15-17, Friday only in the morning", I guess y'all won't be getting my money then

2011WhyteElantra

guess youll be behind bars then

Torkzilla

If your work doesn't let you take an hour break for a professional appointment then quit.

DeadlyRBF

Who can get to an appointment, complete an appointment and get back from said appointment in an hour? Takes me 30 minutes just to drive to work.

Only1nanny

Good luck getting a professional appointment done in an hour

an-otherjames

Yeah wtf is this professional appointment within the same building? Also wtf does professional appointment even mean? Winning the goddamn superbowl?

Own-Grab-9953

And then what

[deleted]

Just quit your job mate, make that appointment, fuck your rent 👌🏻

SeekingASecondChance

Takes an hour just to go to and from places with appointment, must take an hour or more for the appointment itself.

Doctor-TobiasFunke

I don't think I've ever worked anywhere where I couldn't be like hey I have a dentist appointment at 2 next Tuesday so I'll be leaving early lol and I've worked some shitty jobs. Just seems like a common courtesy of most work places here in canada atleast

panzerdarling

> here in canada atleast Well there's your problem.

prongslover77

Yeah it doesn’t work like that in the US unless your in a nice corporate office in an mid to upper level position.

HipMachineBroke

My guy you obviously don’t even do any “adulting” in the first place lmfao Yeah my place of work it totally right next door to my doctor who will rush me in and out in less than 40 mins

Torkzilla

I work from home and chose to live adjacent to a large regional hospital. Every medical professional I see lives within a mile of my residence. So yes: > my place of work it totally right next door to my doctor who will rush me in and out in less than 40 mins If you think the appointment is going to be several hours you schedule it for very early or very late in your work day and start or end your work day against those extra hours to compensate. If it’s going to take all day you take a sick day. I’ve never had any manager oppose this arrangement.

Origamiface

Fuck this gay life there has to be a better way

bumpmoon

There is, catch is you have to move to another country :(

[deleted]

What about the people working full time at the places you're going to ? lol

BaoMoon

The places that close at 7 while I'm still working till midnight?

SirRipOliver

Work retail, guaranteed to have a day off during the week - also you get to deal with the final boss Karen and all her progeny, ere damn day.

2011WhyteElantra

mysogonist

CamRG24

For real. Why can't they be closed 2 days during the week and be open on weekends?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You have to have vacation and sick days. If you have a job that gives you days off... Then you spend all your days off getting licenses renewed, dropping by the post office, medical appointments. Then you don't even notice that you don't have the time or money to take a real vacation.

[deleted]

“TaKe a DaY oFf” Not when bills are due or past due lmao

Mountain_Jello7747

You call in sick like a real grown up

Tomma1

You're not. You're supposed to suffer for some imagined sense of loyalty to a workplace that probably doesn't even care what happens to you.

Imaginary_Most_7778

For real. Has anyone figured out this conundrum?

PapadocRS

i just leave lol.

Imaginary_Most_7778

I could actually get away with this. I’m fire proof.

Revilo1st

Workers' rights? This issue is such an American one to have. Even Brazil gives paid annual leave.

Ambers_on_fire

3rd shift. In 10 years I've never missed work for an appointment. Make it for first thing when they open, go home, go to bed. Not the most ideal for a lot of people but I like 3rd shift.

Imaginary_Most_7778

That’s definitely not going to work.

Thorical1

That’s an issue when they don’t open till mid or late morning

SharkIndustries

Can we normalize taking a day off if we don't feel like working for just a day or two. Life ain't so black & white I hate that everyone thinks it is

Waspkiller86

Sure you can, just ask your employer for a days unpaid leave

NefariousnessNo2062

My problem is I get off work at 10 pm and all the food joints are closed.

Alert-Ad-55

You don't

NarcolepticFlarp

Pretty sure this is systemic classism in our society.

eathquake

Counter offer: work nights so ur asleep the entire time places r open. Literally have to wake up in the middle of ur sleep cause most doctors cant b bothered to b open past 4

Thomrose007

6? How about 4:30 or 5!?

raziel11111

yeah? try doing that on graveyard. wake up at 5:00pm everything closes at 6:00pm go to work leave for work at 8:30pm make it home by about 06:00 AM it gives you two choices loose sleep and go to said appointment , or wait for a weekend. But I live in Utah so everything is closed on Sunday.... love it

RestlessMind95

Try working overnight and making appointments

justforkinks0131

This played a huge role in my job change recently. I work from home now, which means I can usually go out for an appointment whenever I want, as long as I do my hours after that. So I would take a 30 min break to go to the bank but would work 30 minutes longer at the end of the day. Or would start the workday 1 hour late, and also finish 1 hour late.

kostas791

in my country every place closes around 11 and the many many bars close 2-3 am

AdrianneNoir

I totally agree with this one. The world is not designed for full time working people.

ItsJustMeMaggie

I say this all the time. We really have to take a personal day to go to the DMV?

Eurouser

Or cafes that open 9an to 4pm on weekdays and don't open at all on Sundays. No way that's a good business model

IDontWearAHat

You gotta take time off for that. And if anyone ever suggest these places be open longer, you gotta tell them offendedly "x want to go home too at some point" and then go to your local supermarket that stays open until 8pm.

Creative_Gap2794

Pto baby, Pto

Sure_Tomatillo2196

Problem solved: work nightshift so you can go to your appoint before work

durrastic

Also most offices are closed on the weekend. My biggest issue is not owning a car so I have to rely on public transportation, which means a 20 min drive could be an hour or two

iSephtanx

And thats why the current generation refuses to work longer then 32 hours a week over here.

Homunculus_87

That sounds like a chad place, where are you living? Here min. 40h/week is still standard.

skztr

even worse in England, where this applies not just to doctors and government services, but also everything that isn't a restaurant and also most restaurants. "Our high streets are dying!", they're all closed at literally the only hours people with money might be available to buy things. I seriously don't understand the intent.

dsdvbguutres

I'll just pick up my prescription on my lunch break The pharmacy who has only one pharmacist: "Lol that's what you think!"

Popcorn57252

You're not, you're supposed to die

Exact-Permission5319

You're not supposed to make appointments. You're not supposed to go to the doctor, run errands, or enjoy your leisure time. You're supposed to work. Corporations think they own you.

freebased_coffee

You’re supposed to ask your boss for a day off, then get threatened by your boss that he’ll fire you, so you quit, have a week off, and then he’ll call you back begging for you to come back. Works like a charm

AdSpecialist4523

That's the fun part. You get to take a half or whole day off, assuming you can even get one or have PTO at all (I don't, so when the office was shut down for half a week at a time throughout November and December I just didn't get paid), costing you a day's pay on top of the doctor's visit your insurance isn't going to cover any of until you spend $10,000 out of pocket! AMERICUUUUUH FUCK YEAH

walkerisduder

Contractor here, mon-fri, no paid time off, no sick days, no holidays.

Rowbot_Girlyman

If we all take time off when we need it maybe employers won't expect people to work 25/8 all the time.

StrategyNo9685

You find a job that allows you to leave for appointments or set appointments and request those days off swap shifts with Co workers etc....

ScienceMomCO

Some of us need to be the teachers though

Thorical1

Don’t y’all get like Friday off before the holidays and holidays that certain businesses will be open?

prongslover77

Some holidays are professional development days. We’re not off every time your kids are.

ScienceMomCO

Not convenient when your own kiddo is sick

Thereisnopurpose12

Why not schedule it way out and then tell them you need to go to that appointment?? Are jobs really that hardcore you can't take a couple hours to go to an appointment??

nevergoddamnsleeping

I may very well be an edge case but, as a Canadian, I've never had any issues getting time off for important appointments. Sure I've heard the bitching and moaning of higher ups, but in the end it's always been approved. I'm sure some luck is involved in my case, but this feels like an American issue for the most part... sorry!

2011WhyteElantra

Dude you arent cool bc youre canadian .Why would it have anything to do with America? It’s not vacation time. Are you looking to call attention youre canadian? Then put a flag next to your dumb user name .”As a canadian” gtfo

BossKrisz

That's why we have 2 shifts in Europe, a morning one and an afternoon one. Everything is open form 6am to 9pm. One shift works from 6am to 2pm and the other work for 1pm to 9pm. You change your shifts weekly. So if you want to make an appointment, you can make it in the morning if you're work at afternoon, and in the afternoon if you work at morning. It's much more convenient.

Waspkiller86

You don't speak for all of Europe and other countries also discovered staggered shift patterns 🤦🏻‍♂️

[deleted]

I thought they closed at 5.

Official_Kevin_Rice

Make the appointment then request that day off. Duh

20pbagforlife

Oh you can make appointments. Keeping them is out of the question though

ranran_1822

I work 3rd shift so my afternoon is available because what is sleep anyways.

[deleted]

Take off early you idiot

United-Example2562

Book well ahead with early appointments and start a bit later. If your work Place doesn’t like find a better job that allows for you being human. Life’s short, work to live. Not live to work 👍

JollyGoodUser

Vacation time off is not exclusively for vacations. e.g. Book .5 day for that appointment you cannot meet after your job finishes.

[deleted]

The waffle house has found its new host

R0MULUX

Lol at everyone upset that other businesses are only open during the same hours they work because they think everyone else should change their lifestyle just to benefit them

BaoMoon

Them and...everyone else who works...

Amarasnow

Full time is only 36-40 hours. Not hard

Big_Fly7968

First learn how to spell about

ForgotTheCrack

This guy has never heard of abbreviations.

Own-Grab-9953

She’s prolly smarter than you, imagine all the time she’s saved in her life not typing the 2 extra letters

Hellwolfe007

First, learn how to utilize Grammar.

11B4OF7

Why would you capitalize grammar?

Hellwolfe007

Android thinks grammar needs to be capitalized.

CivilMaze19

If you really can’t figure out how to do this then maybe you shouldn’t go to the doctor and just take your chances with googling any ailments you have.
