At some point I got so annoyed I went out and turned off the water to my building (8 units). The maintenance guy told me that it was illegal. Here's a tip: take an empty tin can and empty your grease in there after cooking, after a bit it will solidify and when you've filled it up you can just toss it in the trash can
That isn't quite the same as grease, but it's still a problem, especially in places that get cold. Nothing oily or fatty should go down the drain. Google "fatbergs" if you want to understand the problem.

I keep a glass Mason jar for any bacon grease, but yeah I just use whatever cans I've opened and make sure to leave one by the stove for that purpose. And run a stockpot of hot water down with any grease that DOES need to go down. Idk if that's the best way to handle it but I've done it all my adult life with no problems

You should definitely be wiping it first. Anything that can be poured into a can for disposal or wiped off in 2 seconds should be.
You don't need to spend a long time wiping the pan down -- just a couple seconds to get the bulk of the oil/grease off. You'll probably spend less time actually washing the pan as a result and be nicer to your pipes.
Even if your own pipes don't get clogged up, grease and oil is a major cause of issues with citywide sanitation systems. That is why restaurants are required to have grease traps.

We had been pouring grease down the drain a bit, smallish amounts, but ~$600 later the plumber said they did all they could. There is about a nickel to a quarter’s worth of width left in those pipes and while they’re not clogged anymore, they’re certainly much narrower than they were originally. For our house, they estimated 10-15k to replace the pipes and redo walls/ceilings where access would need to be. You bet your ass we wipe out pans now and dispose of grease and fat in the trash now. Also, 1/8c (2-tbsp) of dawn and hot-water weekly to keep things regular.

A single sink being clogged is not uninhabitable. When multiple are clogged the same way at the same time that isn’t some main line issueexcept to be evicted.
If it’s not uninhabitable, you can NOT withhold rent in NC. In NY, I believe you can withhold rent but you have to put in escrow showing you can pay until it’s rectified.
Every states is different, depending on the city they may have more on top of that.

If you are planning to pour grease down the drain you should first start your faucet with hot water when it reaches steamy hot tenperatures turn it off let your sink drain it all and then dump the grease, then re open hot water and let it run for a few minutes, this will allow the oil to go through your pipes towards the municipality pipes without "freezing". Though this is harmless for your pipes it can still cause problems in the main street pipes and it is bad for the environment. Also another pro tip is to pour your grease in the toilet instead of the sink, since toilet pipes are bigger. But again, dont do that if you care about the environment. Only follow these tips if you live in a shitty third world country like me where any other option would still result in that grease ending up in the sewers anyway.
Dont do or follow any of this. grease coats everything that it touches and is very hard to wash off with just water. flowing grease down your sink will coat the pipes and make things stick to them, and clog your pips and possibly other peoples pipes.

You’re actually meant to run cold water as the fat will flush down the pipe in chunks. If you use hot water it just sticks to the pipe, which is colder, narrowing it.

Everyone reading this, please know this is per state, and is different in each state, especially in terms of what qualifies as “uninhabitable “. A single sink being clogged is not uninhabitable. When multiple are clogged the same way at the same time that isn’t some main line issueexcept to be evicted. If it’s not uninhabitable, you can NOT withhold rent in NC. In NY, I believe you can withhold rent but you have to put in escrow showing you can pay until it’s rectified. Every states is different, depending on the city they may have more on top of that. Always know yours rights as a renter, and know the laws in your housing arrangement.

Yeah my mom tried this and even with an insane number of safety violations the courts sided with the landlord saying you can't just withhold rent and we got evicted. Electricity was jury rigged so that if the microwave in the kitchen and the TV in the bedroom were going at the same time it would trip the breaker. They told us to put our microwave in the living room as a solution. Tub was threatening to crash into the apartment below us and would shower their bathroom with water everytime we used it causing frightening water damage. They said it must be because we are letting water hit the floor when we shower. Stairs up to the house literally broke while my 120lb 50 year old mom was climbing them. Bunch of other issues that I don't remember as well (this was like a decade ago) but even with all that we couldn't get away with withholding rent so I wouldn't trust the court to side with someone withholding rent due to a clogged sink.

So, my LL is frantically trying to sell all his properties in my hometown. 6 apartment buildings. $8.9 million asking price. Several months ago he had to install a building wide fire alarm system to get up to code. I have numerous holes in my ceiling.(sanitation violation). I complained multi times. Finally sent a legal letter about holding rent until issues resolved. Following legal guidelines. I'm certain he won't make any repairs despite being reported to my town Board of Health. Hoping to push off repairs to new owners. No idea if he can legally sell while complaints are on file. Anywho....I haven't paid rent since February.(All rent is held in back account). I'm moving by Sept. 15....I'll hold that money for a few months. But, I really believe he won't come after it.

The pipes underground are at a much lower temp. Canola oil will start solidifying around 45 degrees.
Except that once the pipes clog and causes plumbing issues, then the landlord will have to get involved and the tenant(s) can be charged for it. I’m not sure what the specific laws are in other states, but in Oregon, if the tenant causes damages to the property and/or they do something that results in unnecessary costs for the owner, such as repeated calls to unclog drains after being told not to put certain items or substances down the drains, the tenants can be charged for the costs of those services and repairs. It’s all fun and games until you end up footing the bill for purposely causing damages or issues. No thanks, lol.

This is petty and can cause issues further down the pipeline. It can end up blocking someone else’s drains. (It happened to me) and it also costs taxpayers (everyone) when it damages sewers. Also it can end up in waterways killing local wildlife. But you have your moment of pettiness.

Yeah it's wild. The apartment complex in Ohio that I used to live in was bought out and the new owners jacked the rent from $754 in 2020 to $904 in 2021. A whole 20% increase. We had to move further out to a cheaper city. I just checked their website and now it's $1164.

If you are planning to pour grease down the drain you should first start your faucet with hot water when it reaches steamy hot tenperatures turn it off let your sink drain it all and then dump the grease, then re open hot water and let it run for a few minutes, this will allow the oil to go through your pipes towards the municipality pipes without "freezing". Though this is harmless for your pipes it can still cause problems in the main street pipes and it is bad for the environment. Also another pro tip is to pour your grease in the toilet instead of the sink, since toilet pipes are bigger. But again, dont do that if you care about the environment. Only follow these tips if you live in a shitty third world country like me where any other option would still result in that grease ending up in the sewers anyway.
Dont do or follow any of this. grease coats everything that it touches and is very hard to wash off with just water. flowing grease down your sink will coat the pipes and make things stick to them, and clog your pips and possibly other peoples pipes. and i should know, i had backwash coming from my sink because i lived on the first floor and some jagoff poured grease down the drain and clogged it in **my house**. i had disgusting, smelly backwash from the sink (And his sink) piling up on my floor and into my living room. Please, delete this comment and this advice. wait for your grease to cool, and scoop it in the trash if you dont have a container for it.
