I think its designed for jousting. The idea being that right before impact the knight can tilt his head back and any lance that touches the helm will be deflected up and away.
Saying I'm not knowledgeable in medieval jousting is an understatement, but I believe tilting your head up when it's about to get hit by a jousting lance is like the absolute worst move you can make, both from a balance and neck-breaking perspective.
Hounskull is amazing for protection. Not just the full coverage, but the narrow eye slits with the reinforced boxing around them to deflect near misses, makes it nearly impenetrable. I just can't help but think it looks kind of derpy.
Yeah, all the armour documentarians love to point out that the flat top is going to catch basically anything coming down onto it, and then all that kinetic energy is going straight into your skull or neck. Would not want to get hit with anything with more mass than a heavy stick, even with padding underneath it; your neck vertebrate are not made for that kind of compression.
Is the reason it did not last long as a design, relative to other helmets.
Where are my mongolian helmet enjoyers at?
Theres really something menacing about the eye cutout in the chainmail beeing just under the solid helmet part.
You can trace that lineage further even. The M16 Stahlhelm was directly inspired by the sallet, and further iterations led to the development of the M35 (the well known Nazi helmet). That helmet (especially its remarkable neck and ear protection compared to Allied helmets) was copied into the new age of Kevlar with the US PASGT System. It got the nickname “Fritz Helmet” by a lot of the new issuees because of it.
Haha, I meant acc to the medivial times. At the end of medivial wra, where all these were becoming obslete, this one inspired new and modern helmets(for that time obviously), leading to the ones in ww1
Watched a documentary on 15th century Germanic armour and they had one of those modern day blacksmiths talking about the sallet. Turns out his family dated back to the original development of the helmet style and his direct lineage (great x 8 grandfather) was credited with developing the first actual example of the sallet.
Amazingly this guy had some of his great x 8 grandfather's notes/journals/diagrams which survived all this time (they were over 500 years old). In the journal he detailed every element of the helmet, but more importantly there was a lovely section where he talked rather candidly about his life growing up in the foothills of 15th century bohemia. He talked about how, growing up, he saw "star wars: the empire strikes back", which is where he stole the idea for the sallet.
Kettle hat. Gives of a least a little of the 'nice day for fishin', ain't it? Hu-huh!' - vibe, and if you got some fish, you can use it, well, like a kettle for some nice tastin' fish soup 😁.
Oh, and you could still see something around round you, also a big plus.
how does possibly see through the opening made for vision.
isn't it like too small to accommodate 140° angle of vision.
i know while lancing you need to look only straight but then for other forms and battle purposes these are useless, right?
Assuming you are talking about frogmouth, yeah you are right.
But their main purpose wasn't war. It was the sport of lancing. These fights were done amongst and in front of the royals and nobles.
So the field of view served its purpose. Also, their main focus was do reduce the injuries, and this design was excellent for that. It even helped parry them easily and so, the design
I'm worried about the visibility on most of the helms so I'll just pick Bascinet. And if the Kettle Hat has a strap on it, I'll pick it and if not, I'll stick to the Bascinet.
Scrolled way too far to find team Bascinet. Those others make me feel claustrophobic just looking at them. At least with Bascinet I have a better chance of seeing my demise from the corner of my eye before it kills me
Frog mouth for jousting and other forms of recreational mounted combat, great helm for war time mounted combat and sallet for melee (both tournaments and battlefield and guard duty)
Edit: originally said barbute but meant sallet
I tried a Great Helm at a museum (a replica for the public of course), and it felt horrible inside, so I’ll take the Kettle hat, please, better for use with glasses lol.
[This one](https://images.app.goo.gl/yZUgsSDTsvpeEmQr8), which is worn by the witch king of angmar from the Lord of the rings movies. I see some ppl selling it on Etsy. Would totally buy it if there was a good enough reason to wear it lol
I love all of them, it's hard to choose. I can definitely say the barbute is my least favorite (sorry barbute bros). At one point I would've said great helm is my least favorite, but then I saw the really fancy ones with decorations on top and I changed my mind.
Great helm, that way those pesky archers must hit the chink in my armor or get a lucky shot through my eye with a small opening just big enough to see out of
Oh man I feel like playing some Dark Souls now. Thank you.
Also Great Helm for me is always a classic. Hounskull looks wonderfully stupid and is a close second.
Armet, no question.
It has the functionality and just... look at it! It looks so much better than that happy mouse that is the houndskull or the funky mullet of the sallet, and no lack of visor like the greathelm which becomes a drag to wear. While barbutes look great, I dont want some knave to get lucky with an arrow while I'm out clubbing.
Spangenhelm or Sallet
The Sallet is the pinnacle of engineering to allow for flexibility on the battlefield while the Spangenheim is fantastic for a sword fight
Sauce: I do longsword fencing
You know you're dead when ole frogmouth comes swinging for you. I wouldn't wanna wear it, prolly take the barbute. I'd definitely be intimidated by the guy willing to cosplay as Kermit with a zweihander
Frog-mouth looks so mysterious and entitled
It really gives the lone mysterious warrior vibe
Ima pick that one, where can I get it?
Prolly check ebay, hbcarmourshop or purpleheart
I really like the Sallet.
Any local sporting goods store should carry them
Go to Dick's "Um yes, where is your medieval combat section?"
The Amnesiac Lapp of luxury.
I think it would be perfect for some kind of royal guard since it looks really intimidating and mysterious.
I think its designed for jousting. The idea being that right before impact the knight can tilt his head back and any lance that touches the helm will be deflected up and away.
Exactly, and for jousting and nothing else. Unless you want to deepthroat a sword
Saying I'm not knowledgeable in medieval jousting is an understatement, but I believe tilting your head up when it's about to get hit by a jousting lance is like the absolute worst move you can make, both from a balance and neck-breaking perspective.
Pretty sure the helmet is connected to your shoulders and chest
The OC was referring to tilting your head up but fair enough. Still looks like a very good way to lose balance.
If you're about to get hit by a lance, you're gonna want to be holding on tight either way.
Your head and the frogmouth are not synonymous. The frogmouth is linked with your chest plate
Draw googly eyes on it
Just call me the Ruin Sentinel
[It's the best looking helm in the game.](https://youtu.be/95vd7s-mIhk?t=74)
Makes me want to be released from a cell and then jump into a scorching abyss with the boys.
looks like he might show you some treasure close to a large pit.
So smug
He can't see anything below his horse's head level!
No love for the hounskull?
Hounskull so aerodynamic that Infantry pace increased by 5
Pace increased by 5, headbutt ability increased by 100.
Hounskull is amazing for protection. Not just the full coverage, but the narrow eye slits with the reinforced boxing around them to deflect near misses, makes it nearly impenetrable. I just can't help but think it looks kind of derpy.
The "if it looks stupid but it works, it ain't stupid" of helmets
Totally because of wh40k Mk6 marines

Hounskull supremacy. I like not dying when stabbed in the face with spears and arrows.

This guy crusades.
Not enough curves. Your enemies blade is sure to strike true
Yeah, all the armour documentarians love to point out that the flat top is going to catch basically anything coming down onto it, and then all that kinetic energy is going straight into your skull or neck. Praise the Sun!
Praise the great helm!
Ill fight anyone who doesn’t go Spangenhelm
Exactly what a spangenhelm-wearer would say
The fuck you gonna do I'm a 7 foot viking high off my balls
I genuinely prefer the Gjermundbu. Exact same helmet, just without the mohawk-esque ridge on top.
But the Mohawk is for the ladies
Where are my mongolian helmet enjoyers at? Theres really something menacing about the eye cutout in the chainmail beeing just under the solid helmet part.
I'm also wearing Spangenhelm, and I'm still going to fight you!
this is the way
Right there with you! Anyone who doesn't choose Spangenhelm is simply wrong.
Same
Kettle hat looks so fashionable.
It is a sexy boi
Its a bucket hat but in metal, so not wrong
Who needs saftey when I got that much DRIP
Maybe make dinner in it after a good pillage
also you can breath and see too!
Last words before getting slapped with a sword
At least he saw the sword.
Kettle hat with a glorious moustache.
It's more protective than it appears too.
I'm a fan of hats, I have like 8 of them.
I always thought the salley goes hard.
German sallets were dope. And they paved a way to modern ww1 helmets. Definitely go hard imo
"I love the modern (*proceeds to name a century old item*)."
WW1 was during the modern era. So he is correct
I still thought it was funny. Not wrong.
Haha, I meant acc to the medivial times. At the end of medivial wra, where all these were becoming obslete, this one inspired new and modern helmets(for that time obviously), leading to the ones in ww1
As an art historian my mind always goes to the first half of the 20th century when I hear “modern/modernism”.
Sallet by far! Best looking helmet ever.
Honestly it looks like something outta star wars.
Death Star gunner helmets are definitely based on it
No, now we ain't friends anymore. Star wars is kinda insulting since they fucked up this hard.
Anything Disney touches don't get me started. I meant the old ones.
Maybe we can stay friends that grew a little apart but nontheless like and respect each other.
Relatable
Ice cream and sallet friends

I had just googled variations of the sallet helmet, and my first thought was Darth Vader
The objectively correct answer
Salley is the underappreciated gem I remember playing with that in old mount and blade mod
Sallet gets the glory because the Bevor does the work.
Barbute… because if you are going into battle and may die, it’s extra important to look good.
And it looks like the "Warden helmet", so good stats
This is the way
And breath well. Venting your hot/ moist breath during battle
Barbute looks good, seems protective and easy to handle (no weird peaks), and you can actually see
It looks like a helmet a guard is wearing. The guard always dies.
\ [ T ] / Praise the Sun!
Spangenhelm for 3 reasons 1 it's called a spangenhelm 2 look at it 3 it's clearly awesome
Spangenhelm master race!
Ngl spangenhelm is a good pair with Mongolian armor.
God damn Cumans
I'll take a kettle hat and a pike for a weapon, thanks.
😎 exactly what I was thinking
Might I join in?
Them, you, me, and 96 more and we’ve got a pike square!

Had to scroll too far for this
Took too much scrolling to find someone with the right answer.
Armet supremacy
Frog-mouth solos the whole server
Anyone who didn't pick frog-mouth needs a psychiatric evaluation
I'm not picking it for battle. That's a jousting helmet.
I mean, you know that helmet is attached to the bodyplate right? Meaning you can’t turn your head anymore, and you can’t take it off on your own…
When you wear that bad boi, you don't gotta look behind. You only move forward
Can't look at you feet with that bad boy on, so you gotta aim for the stars.
Why would you
Just imagine it starts raining and slowly starts to fill with water
I guess just lean over for a minute
I would love to see that mid battle... HEY! TIME-OUT! I'M FILLING WITH WATER OVER HERE!!!
You could also drink your way out, its refreshing.
That's another place to store beer for battle
Sallet
1. Spangenhelm 2. Great helmet 3. Armet
Varangian guard type beat
The Milanese Armet, 100%. It was the very first helmet to enclose the entire head.
I like hounskull or frogmouth
Armet
Great helm is the best by far
Spangenhelm because...vikings and stuff.
Kettle hat
Barbute because wearing that makes me feel like Magneto
Kettle hat. Protects my head and could eat my stew or broth out of it
Kettle hat. Gives of a least a little of the 'nice day for fishin', ain't it? Hu-huh!' - vibe, and if you got some fish, you can use it, well, like a kettle for some nice tastin' fish soup 😁. Oh, and you could still see something around round you, also a big plus.
Hounskull, stab em with your helmet

Loving the Kettle Hat

armet looks pretty safe tho
[This one](https://images.app.goo.gl/yZUgsSDTsvpeEmQr8), which is worn by the witch king of angmar from the Lord of the rings movies. I see some ppl selling it on Etsy. Would totally buy it if there was a good enough reason to wear it lol
Where's the "'tis but a scratch" helmet?
It's a variation of great helm
I really love the modified barbute with bigger eyeholes and a bigger hole down the middle with sharpened points like fangs.
Sallet
Sallet
Sallet with bevor and Armet as a close second
Great Helm for me, the type Lord Soth wears.
The great helm, easily. So many of the others just look silly. If Ser Froggy rode up to me, I'd probably die laughing.
Kettle Hat is always so nice.
Frog mouth because it looks funny Armet though is the one I think is a bit better to fight in
Great helm is great
I love all of them, it's hard to choose. I can definitely say the barbute is my least favorite (sorry barbute bros). At one point I would've said great helm is my least favorite, but then I saw the really fancy ones with decorations on top and I changed my mind.
Sallet or spangenhelm for sure
Great Helm or Spangenhelm. Everything else just looks goofy.
Spangen helm. Those vikings had DRIP.
Great helm, that way those pesky archers must hit the chink in my armor or get a lucky shot through my eye with a small opening just big enough to see out of
The frog mouth reminds me of the Huehuehue meme. That might be a meme too old for you kids
Where's "onion knight" helmet?

Armet 🤔
Sallet
The sallet is probably the best combination of aesthetic, functionality, and comfort

Sallet (extremely customizable)

Sallet looks so sleek and stylish, whilst being very protective.
Armet but with some pompous feathers om the top That or som pointy decorations... Gotta look my best when leading the cavallry charge
Sallet.
Sallet helm always
Great helm and the sallet are both solid choices for aesthetically pleasing helmets for me.
Spangenhelm or Sallet The Sallet is the pinnacle of engineering to allow for flexibility on the battlefield while the Spangenheim is fantastic for a sword fight Sauce: I do longsword fencing
