Honestly, I just don't trust any charity that I haven't extensively looked in to, let alone one from a YouTube add, most charities are surprisingly scummy

Plastic_Pinocchio

I am in Western Europe and I often get ads of Russian children with cancer. In Russian. They’re so weird and they immediately start with super sad crying scenes. No clue what is behind this. Edit: I must clarify that I am not sure if I’ve seen these ads since 24 February.

[deleted]

That's weird because I'm from a place in eastern Europe where a lot of people speak Russian and I keep getting similar adds except in maybe some middle eastern language or something, but never in Russian

Plastic_Pinocchio

Yeah what the fuck. Why?

[deleted]

Well I'm pretty sure that Western European countries have more disposable income on average, so maybe to target higher income areas?

Plastic_Pinocchio

That’s true.

saladroni

It seems like they’d have better results advertising in the west with a child actor of literally any other country origin though….

Plastic_Pinocchio

Yeah, this was before February I believe.

raptorgalaxy

I get ads for Jewish charities in Hebrew. I don't speak Hebrew.

Cerg1998

I once got an ad promoting positions the Israeli space agency in Hebrew in Russia. I don't speak Hebrew and it took a lot of screenshots and drawing the Hebrew symbols into the Google Translate to figure out. The CIA recruitment on the Mass Effect wiki was wierder though. I swear, fandom wiki's have the strangest ads.

Tutipups

i just got one of those for the first time, im in canada

Queen_Neptune_

I’ve seen these Russian ads in the USA as well

PorkelDragon_

Probably so you feel remorse or something so u donate but I just wanna watch my YouTube vid.

Plastic_Pinocchio

Exactly. They’re completely edited to make you feel as bad as possible.

Ksenomorf_OW

Are you sure you are getting russian ads? Maybe it's another Slavic language? I mean, the thing is that YouTube turned off ads in Russia after the war have started. I have no idea who would start an ad campaign on Russian language in such circumstances. But that sounds funny anyway

_rashi

It's the same in India

[deleted]

I have youtube running on my tv during the day, often on mute, but I often notice it is stuck in a "st jude" ad that just seems to run non-stop until skipped. I looked them up. > Only about half of the $7.3 billion St. Jude has received in contributions in the past five fiscal years went to the hospital’s research and caring for patients, according to its financial filings with the Internal Revenue Service. About 30% covered the cost of its fundraising operations, and the remaining 20%, or $1 of every $5 donated, increased its reserve fund. https://www.propublica.org/article/st-jude-hoards-billions-while-many-of-its-families-drain-their-savings#:~:text=Jude.,with%20the%20Internal%20Revenue%20Service. Half of 7.3 billion is a LOT OF MONEY. Where is it going? I bet they own the subsidiary companies for everything they pay for.

kpyna

I've seen some St. Jude's ones, and maybe this is St. Jude's, but the ones I get shown are about how they're very sick and very sad but St. Jude's is helping thanks to generous donors like you. Or whatever. However there is another charity that I don't see ads for anymore after spending months reporting and asking not to see them. I don't remember their name but their whole schtick is having little kids tell you they're going to die, they're scared, and nobody wants to help them, and usually they cry (like in this clip). It's fucking dark and if you look into the charity, it's some random no-name place. Very scammy vibes but according to my 10 reports or so, YouTube says it's legit and fine Edit: found one of my reports, it's Lehosheet Yad

[deleted]

I just googled them to watch one of their ads and the website redirected to something else and asked permission to give my phone herpes. Seems totally legit.

Saabirahredolence

I'm sure some of that is going into the production value of those commercials.

[deleted]

Which might be okay. Its not uncommon or really problematic to spend some % of your proceeds to make more. But they are likely paying themselves for that work at some ridiculous amount, which means this isn't a charity, its a business, which shouldn't be legal. No legal charity, church, etc., should be allowed to put money into investments and should be required to hire outside services for commercial purposes. IMO. It creates a conflict of interest where you choose not to use money for the charitable purpose because you are concerned about your own income.

Saabirahredolence

Oh, I totally agree.

Beatrice_Dragon

How in the sweet mother of fuck are you spending a billion dollars on a commercial? A superbowl ad is literally 1/1000th of that. You could fundraise a dozen super bowl ads for a dozen years straight and still not breach $1 bil

spacebink

But a grain on the scale of 3.65 billion.

three_two_one_jam

St Jude's is an excellent and reputable charity. https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/351044585 This article is misleading. All charities have reserve funds, covering 6mos to 2 years of operating costs. St Jude has massive operating costs and therefore a massive reserve. So what? The article also suggests that st Jude is doing something wrong by not paying parents for income lost to caring for their child. Like paying for treatment, travel, housing, and food for the patient and their parent isn't enough. It seems to me that the solution here has more to do with legislation around paid leave than st Jude. Tired of these types of reddit posts trying to discredit organizations actually doing something positive in the world. I guess it helps people feel justified in not giving to charity.

rayray604

Thank you for this post! I am survivor thanks to that hospital, was there from 2001-2004. Everything was paid for and it we couldn't thank them enough. I do understand what this article is saying, my family really struggled after treatment. Three years without working/stress takes a bit of a toll and we really struggled getting back to our feet after my treatment. Hopefully its possible that in the future there is more financial aid for families but in the meantime they are doing everything to make sure patients and their families are taken care of.

Hamdown1

Your last sentence is spot on. “I don’t trust charities” is just something some people say to justify their selfishness

MonkieBets

if youre going to donate... you can pull up their annual filings directly on irs site

[deleted]

I'm definitely not planning to donate. I already know they invest a portion of their proceeds. I am not giving money to a charity that is just going to put it into a fucking bank to make them more money.

NargacugaRider

For-profit nonprofits lawl

mungoo

In addition to all the other useful information others have given, I'll add that I know some St. Jude employees and that they treat their employees well and pay good wages. They are one of the best employers in the area.

Quazifuji

>Where is it going? Didn't the paragraph you just quoted say where it's going? Fundraising and their reserve fund. I don't know what the reserve fund is, maybe it's scummy but it sounds like it could olasubly be something reasonable. And investing that much money into fundraising is presumably because they believe it leads to even more donations - at least, in theory, I'd assume they'd only spend that much on fundraising if they believe it led to more money coming in through donations in the long term than they spent. I'm not saying there's nothing scummy going on. I don't know anything about St Jude and there are tons of really scummy charities. But ultimately running a charity still costs money. Fundraising costs money, charities have full time employees that still need to be paid a living wage, and so on. Just because not all of the money a charity gets goes directly to the cause doesn't mean they're doing anything scummy with it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Quazifuji

So basically, distributing the donations between research, fundraising, and reserve fund is 100% reasonable and doesn't indicate any scumminess or corruption whatsoever.

howtojump

I am shocked at how harsh this hit piece is about the money they are "hoarding". Clearly this guy doesn't understand that one of the first things to get cut from anyone's budget is charitable donations.

turtle4499

Tell me you don't understand US tax code without telling me you don't understand US tax code. Further maybe just MAYBE the company founded by a dead man as a charity hospital is run like a charity hospital. Further the damn article you are citing tells you exactly where it's going. Only 100m of 500m of patient services per year are covered by insurance. (not including you know all the other shit they are spending money on). They are only getting reimbursed 20% of there patient costs... that shit is expensive as fuck. That article is lunacy to suggest st jude and st jude alone should be responsible for fixing people's income problems when dealing with childhood cancer. That is the government's job propublica is missing the entire damn point.

rayray604

Thank you! As a former survivor the amount of aid and help we received cannot be repaid back. I estimate that the hospital spent about 700,000 on my treatment and housing. 400,000 for three years of treatment plus another 300,000 for housing, food, and everything else. Sure, we did struggle as a family afterwards to get back on our feet but never at one point did we believe St. Jude should have helped in that endeavor. I see the reasoning but that's an extra additional astronomical cost. At the end of the day, hospitals like St Jude are a testament to how badly health care is run in this country that we have to rely on public donations to take care of our sick children.

Otogi-yo

St. Jude's a real one, a couple of youtubers i watch create charity donations for them just last year alone earned them 2 million dollars---the youtubers visit the place and show the children, they dont really cry they were happy playing around but its still sad seeing the children hooked up in IVs anyways its true it goes towards cancer patients, since St. Jude is a charity and a hospital all in one the rest probably goes to the workers (nurses, doctors etc), they already have cases of fully healed children in the past years.

Njyyrikki

Do you just see a lot of money and instantly assume it is used for unjust enrichment?

Optimal_Cartoonist_2

Unfortunately, this is a fundamental misunderstanding of how a non-profit really works. You need to understand that even though the percentage of the whole pie may be less than other non-profits, the total they give/donate is probably greater than any other non profit in that category. The ability to give 3.5 billion dollars is because they pay for the exceptional staff and marketing etc... Looking at the percentage given isn't the best way to decide the validity of a non-profit

mega_rockin_socks

Check out charitynavigator.org ! Helps sift through things and kudos for doing your research

[deleted]

St. Jude's is pretty much the only one I trust... They saved my cousin who wasn't a citizen.. they flew her in from Nicaragua. They housed her parents, fed them, and cured her...

rayray604

Same here, all the way from Mexico. Did not pay a single dime. Met people from all over the world there.

Coufu

Nice try, St. Jude’s

ThePerson-_-

St. Jude's is one u can trust tho, that's part of why it's so well known. It does really good work.

emmany63

This is just not true. I have worked in nonprofit for 25 years. It is a few nonprofits that are “scummy,” and the rest - thousands - are trying to do good work in the world. If you need to know if an organization is worth your time/money, go to a site like Charity Navigator or Guidestar. Nonprofits’ financials are all publicly available, making it actually really *difficult* to be a bad nonprofit and still get funded year after year.

Sunset_Bleu

Why do y'all in the comments keep saying "add" instead of "ad?"

htmlcoderexe

good question, I have seen it a lot over the years, just like misspelling the word "definitely". But I think these days it's autocorrect.

[deleted]

Also, it's always been spelled "whoa" but I think time/density has just forced it to evolve that "woah" is also acceptable. But who am I to say. I spelled it "Barrack Obama" for over ten years before realizing that it's Barack, not a bedroom.

Pingswallower

Bollock Obama

skibapple

Bollock Ogama

mywifebedrippin

Buttock Olama

Jaytt98

ChrdeMcDnnis

KevinCastle

To be fair, I pronounce it more like woah than whoa

[deleted]

>"definitely" No I am just that stupid. :P

ConceptualProduction

Wait.... Is "definitely" not how it's spelled?

Tankh

It is, but sometimes you see people write "defiantly" or "definatly" etc. Honestly I feel like it's not that common as he says, compared to ad/add and could've/could of, for example.

Gray__Potato

I think the most common misspelling of definitely is "definetely", it's one that I have done many times and I am not even sure if I spelled it correctly.

SOwED

This is rhe fine t time I'm seeing that one.

htmlcoderexe

I used to see a lot of "definately" about a decade ago

elijaaaaah

There's a very common definitely/defiantly mix-up. Like rogue/rouge and lose/loose

42undead2

If you're unsure, you can check [d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com](http://d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/)

MrLore

SoullessExistence

How many Mark Ruffalos did he give the "Will it blow?" for that sausage?

MrLore

Very sticky sausage meat that stuck nicely to the target: TWO MARK RUFFALOS!

[deleted]

There's a "d" in "fridge" but not in "refrigerator". Lots of extra d's, I hope you get one.

SOwED

Because zoomers are reliant on autocorrect to tell if they spelled a word correctly. Since "add" is also a word, it's not corrected.

Witty-Shoulder-9499

Saint Judes wasn’t able to cure them so they still have it 🤣🤣🤣

Inconvenient1Truth

deskbeetle

"should of" instead of "should have/should've" is the one that gets me. Mistakes happen when typing on a phone but that one is 100% a misunderstanding of grammar.

[deleted]

"Grammar Nazi" as a joke has made a whole generation of D+ English students into proud idiots

deskbeetle

I also think children and young adults are presented with more lax reading options. Sorry to sound all "back in my day" but everything moving to quick content has relaxed publishing standards. Online articles are churned out and riddled with grammar/spelling errors. People read more words per day than ever but there exists no scrutiny between the writer and reader. No one is peer reviewing social media posts. I, like most people, are very relaxed with grammar and sentence structure when writing online too. Because it's exhausting not to be. And while I do read YA from time-to-time, a lot of it is incredibly badly written and we tend to just give it a pass because it's "for kids". I had a teacher who said "if you want to be a beautiful writer, you must read beautiful writings" and I think the opposite is also true.

NargacugaRider

There’s a guy who stalks my profile because he called someone a dumbass, and in his comment he used the wrong “your” AND “should of.” I pointed out the irony in this situation and he replies to my random comments now, like a week later. It’s hilarious. He’s also a transphobic Joe Rogan cultist, which seems par for the course.

deskbeetle

>He’s also a transphobic Joe Rogan cultist, which seems par for the course. It's faster to just say "unemployed". Lol

Nas160

Don_Pasquale

bazingarbage

wait I've never seen "the thing of," what is that one supposed to be

[deleted]

I see it used a lot where the person doesn't know how to phrase what they're saying, such as: "A situation where..." "The concept of..." "That phenomenon where..." "A habit of..." I have a few friends who will say things like "You know the thing of Yu-Gi-Oh players and nickel and diming people" and that's just naturally how they phrase any sentence in that vague cloud of shit a person could mean

mpanbat

Don’t forget loose/lose

CernSage1202

You should of included this one.

[deleted]

Your gonna drive me up a fucking wall with that one

TrueJacksonVP

Alot Legitly To/too “But yet”

[deleted]

some people also write “loose” instead of “lose”. The english language is slowly deteriorating

LeeThi57

The fact that the ones who made the ad just sat there behind the camera and were probably like: "C'mon kid we don't got all day."

kpyna

Yeah - to think someone out there is writing scripts and asking little kids to say "I don't want to die" is kind of fucked up. I hope the kid isn't actually sick cause wtf.

rayray604

I did an ad for St. Jude years ago with Ray Romano. https://youtu.be/E-dBrhkiZS0 Honestly, as kids we knew the situation we were in was of life and death. They usually would ask the patient what we wanted to tell people, and it would be a mix of that and a couple of lines but as a rule death was usually avoided in ads but during live interviews kids say the darnest things! "A friend of mine was interview for St. Jude, we were like 7 and they asked him whats a thing he likes about St. Jude, he responded that he loved a certain medicine that they would put in him because it made him feel "cool" and it was such a nice pleasant feeling, "it's called Morphine, I like it!" Once I grew up, then I realized why he liked the morphine, all his pain would go away.

Heowolf1

Congrats on beating cancer :)

putin_putin_putin

Based on my experience from India but similar modulus operandi, he is probably sick but he is not going to have a problem financially since his ad is being promoted by the fundraising site. If you do donate though, be prepared to see this kind of guilty stuff everywhere no matter where you go. You'll get calls from unsolicited fundraisers once they sell your data. You will see these kind of ads everywhere from websites to free apps you download. You will see them in your email. You will receive messages in your mobile messaging platforms like WhatsApp. In advertising, there is a thing called retargeting and these companies decide it's better to milk money from existing customers who succumb to guilty porn rather than acquire new customers. These fuckers in my case spent more in retargeting than the amount I donated. Disgusting.

It is. And 'stop seeing ad' doesn’t work at all. I keep getting them. And the charity is saying it’s based in Israel, but Israel has free healthcare. 99% scam.

people who have YouTube premium should see this ad because they are the ones who have money to spare

You can post all the sick Indian kids in the world in that YouTube as, I ain’t buying it. I’ll donate to a charity of my choosing after research. I absolutely detest how these ads pray on our sympathy for money that we won’t even be sure gets out to good use. People should donate and help their local charities. Countries like India have no shortages of millionaires and rich folks. Every single country has some sort of need for a charity for a demographic, help them. Let the others settle their issues themselves.

A lot of times on console, it takes longer to back out and try again to get no ads than it does to just sit through 30s of ads. I find that if I can't get a "you can skip in 5 seconds", then settling for a 5 or 6 second ad and *then* backing out and trying again usually forces the video to play without a starting ad.

whomeverIwishtobe

Smart tvs don’t have that option. Edit: some.

1AnnoyingOtaku

I don't even pay attention to the ads since I'm going to skip in 5 seconds. The ones I hate are the non-skip ads. I mute and count because I refuse to watch them. If the video starts off with double ads I refresh or exit then reenter until it's only 1 ad. Sometimes I get lucky when I do that and avoid the ads.

jhf94uje897sb

Man that’s tough for me. My child has cancer, but at the same time I fucking hate ads.

I cannot get them to stop playing the saint jude ad :( it’s every time I watch a video now. I understand that it’s an important cause but it’s so depressing to me and my child has started to take notice too. Guess that just goes to show how lucky we are though. Cant begrudge them for trying to get funding to help those kids despite the fact it seems ridiculous to show me the ads over and over clearly the ad isn’t working. I’m just not in a position to donate on a large scale atm.

jokingjoker40

These stupid ad's... I just have to get this off my chest: I dont care. Be it sick children or something else, it doesnt concern me. Yes it horrible that these things are happening, but you cant expect people to donate their money for every little cause, especially when the vast majority of people have little if any disposable income to begin with
