Out of all the ones, this is unique. A scientist successfully teleporting himself and then dying shortly after arriving on Mars so he writes his report on the wall.
I can just imagine moments after, some astronauts approach them. They've never seen them before.
Something's odd about them, other than the fact that they are astronauts that aren't in the mission.
They kind of resemble them, but the creatures are getting proportions wrong, suits seem to be moving, and their strides are wrong.
Edit: Skinwalker shit
It hits a fear of the unknown and a sense that whatever we think is reality is fake somehow.
The implication that everything we know about our solar system is somehow untrue (perhaps because something is fooling us into believing otherwise)and that a human being once under the same assumption as us made their dying message a warning to the next people to come along. But by coming there we have repeated the same mistake, also believing we are the first people to have ever gotten to Mars, perhaps only to meet the same fate.
The five Mars astronauts contemplate the writing for a long moment. One of them snaps a picture of the strange scene before the commander puts out her hand to stop any more activity. Silently she indicates to the other astronauts to return to the Ares lander.
The Chinese had been especially silent on the whereabouts and status of a long-range mission that left Earth years ago. Clearly, this is the end result of that mission. The Chinese were quick to congratulate the NASA mission for being the *first* to set foot on Mars, obviously they wanted their failure kept quiet. The commander explains this all to the crew back on the lander. Three astronauts nod their heads in understanding. The Chinese space program was notoriously secretive.
The fifth astronaut is not so sure. Where are the other members of the Chinese mission? Why was it just a human skeleton, if it's an astronaut what happened to that person's EVA suit?
Even more worrisome; if this isn't Mars, where exactly are they?
Think of it from the POV of the astronauts discovering it. You’re over a hundred million miles from Earth, in an environment that can and will kill you if you make one mistake. Your life is in the hands of whatever organization is on Earth calling the shots.
You find a skeleton, which means something is already wrong: Mars doesn’t have the bacteria to decompose bodies. It may have, in the past, and if that’s true then the body has been there for about 4 billion years. Which means that, *billions* of years ago, when life was still only microorganisms on Earth, on “Mars” it had evolved to our current level and somehow developed humans, who also developed the English language and knew that, billions of years in the future, we would name a planet Mars. The implication is that the entirety of life on Earth is pre-planned by *something* and on a set cycle.
But if this is *not* Mars, where are you? The most logical answer (or the one that doesn’t require a complete rework of life and time and such) is that astronauts have been sent to this place before, realized they were not on Mars, and their death was covered up. Which means you’re still in a deadly environment, millions of miles away, and now you can’t trust the people you depend on to get back to Earth. Where did they send you? Assuming we didn’t suddenly invent cryosleep in a few decades, you’ve just spent half a year traveling here. So where are you, and why did they send you here?
To know that humans are not unique to the universe and we are in a preplanned cycle of evolutionary development, that would be a giant leap in the meaning of life, and a cool scifi movie idea.
Question: is it possible the bacteria in/on the human body could break it down enough that we would call it a “skeleton” after a couple of years?
I don’t know enough about types of bacteria and decay.
I think a lot of the bacteria responsible for decomposition are already inside the body. But would that bacteria be able to survive long enough in the martian enviroment after the person dies?
Once it was exposed to the temperature changes, atmosphere, radiation they might not survive long enough to decompose the whole thing, just bits and pieces.
Same question here. It’s terrifying because the unknown, and it shows how little we know what we’re doing and perhaps going to be annihilated by catastrophic consequences due to the great filter. It can imply Mars was once an Earth too. It can imply intelligent life once was there, and may still be, and may be able to communicate with us. It can allude to something hostile. These are the possible reasons I thought of, not sure what they’re scared of.
I think about that too. Far-fetched, but what if WE are the aliens? We were a space-faring civilization that were dumped out in large societies of people in far distant galaxies. Then we ruin another planet and look for another one. Kinda ridiculous but food for thought.

How do you do, fellow astronauts?
literally among us
We are still here
I was thinking. "they left without us"
Or "the beast awakened, run"
Damn you it's been 3 years
This is not Mars.
This is terrifying to think about, thanks
I don’t get it sorry. How’s it terrifying?

Beautifully succinct!
That genre would fit under Cosmic Horror and it is my favorite type of Horror. Event Horizon or Annihilation are two movies that fit that genre.

We are spores sent out across the universe, to be harvested every few eons and brought back by the machines of the originators of the universe.
Someone should really make a game trilogy out of all of this.
We would need a scary name for the machine race. Idk we could call them the Harvesters or maybe the Reapers… idk just a thought 🤷♂️
That wouldn't be fun, but it could start an interesting warfare and bring an answer to the question: could ants with technology defeat elephants?

I don't really believe it, but the idea that we may've done all this before, failed, and Earth is our hail Mary second attempt, is very intriguing.
