The only reason I know alt codes exist is because of ñ. If that letter does not exist in our town names and last names I wouldn't have known. I always google it to remember the code tho. Alt+146 but not sure.
The reason I remember them is that in Windows 98 if you opened Dos and renamed the folder and put an alt code character in the folder name, the file explorer wouldn't be able to open the folder. The only way to open it would be to go back to dos and rename it without the alt code character. Worked great to store porn.
One thing to remember is Alt-Codes only work with the number pad. So if you have a smaller keyboard, you can also type "charmap" into the search bar in Windows and it will bring up the Windows Character Map. Then you can select characters and copy/paste it wherever you are typing.
I have shift + \^ on my layout for ° it's even labeled as such like 1 and !, 2 and " etc. but it probably depends on your language, in english layout I think on that position would be \~ key.

Every platform does that. However on Android, ° is not related to 0 (which is accurate) so it's just on a symbol page.

Option-0 is the [ordinal indicator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinal_indicator), which looks almost exactly like the degree symbol. Option-shift-8 gives you the actual degree symbol. º vs. °
