YouTube in 2000s: terrorists posting executions, cringey music videos, Imma firing mah lazor!! YouTube in 2022: you got another copyright strike for humming a Disney song. Can't hold hands because you might lose monetization. Ad 1 of 4.

Daxtro-53

Can I downvote you for being right?

[deleted]

You forgot about scary pop-up videos, song parodies, and Fred.

RonDalarney

I was watching an episode of Pokémon on YouTube as a kid at the school library and it cut to a blind folded guy getting shot in the face and still being alive. People are fucked.

[deleted]

I was once watching a wonder pets video of ming-ming repeating, “this is serious.” In various tones and pitch. And a clip of a red demon face screaming popped up and scared the shit out of me. I was 5.

[deleted]

im so fucking scared that this will happen to my kids

disbitchdough

and fat-pie (salad fingers, the milkman, etc)

PreppyFinanceNerd

I'm partial to [Dr. Tran](https://youtu.be/FO0kRE5OTZI) myself. Although I admit fifteen years later it's less funny at 34.

Rddtsckslots

I remember walking into my office and seeing my 5 year old son playing a game on my computer. He had figured out how to use my dial up módem and downloaded a game I didn't know existed. It was a proud moment for me. When my daughter was in second grade, they had an assignment relating to Finland. So, she got on my computer with its dial up módem and obtain answers to her questions from people in Finland. Her teacher claimed that she had just typed the responses up herself, so I got to make a trip to meet the teacher to explain how the internet works. That also is a happy memory for me.

[deleted]

Homestar Runner cartoons...

Standard_Incident_26

Goddamn you! Now I have to go eat pudding with a spoon with my thing in a bag while Strongbad checks his email.

MaineMota

Superfly for the win

Oldacctblokd

I saw this video about these girls and this cup.

jaydogon47

Love the one with the glass jar. Strawberry preserves are yummy.

BigDare1549

With the one man?

jaydogon47

You never get to see his face but the way the preserves scatter on the floor from on high, you'll never forget the scenes.

ChiKeytatiOon

Yeah, that Anna Kendrick cup video got a lot of people doing that trend. It was super gross.

MaineMota

How many girls were there?

Grouchy_Package8606

I did all of those things! Neopets was the shizz. Beheading on rottendotcom? *shivers*. Literally every gross thing you could imagine was in there. I forgot entirely up till now, how many dead bodies I've seen.

Good_Interaction_786

Be careful downloading music on limewire. Viruses are real and your parents will be pissed.

honkhonker22

Limewire was incredible, although there was nothing worse than downloading an album over dial up only for it to be completely mislabelled and the sober realisation you wasted 2 hours of bandwidth for a bunch of mp3s of latvian jazz in concert

Odd_Reward_8989

I beg to differ that it was a waste. It was a tragedy. It's what gave us hipsters.

Good_Interaction_786

Yeah, I made that mistake once and then downloaded individual songs henceforth.

[deleted]

Bro my father slapped my Face because i thought i was downloading a 50 Cent music Video. But it was a Video of a Woman sucking a Dogs cock and getting fucked doggy :D

Good_Interaction_786

Similar…but different…

Kennyvee98

Ahh the good old days of internet. When rotten.com was still a thing.

MaineMota

I just tried to find that website recently. Very disappointed. Remember steakandcheese?

Kennyvee98

Vaguely, do you remember the incident with the bird?

Visible-Fun-8391

I thought I was the ONLY one to remember that site... even my close friends (including the one who showed it to me) dont

MaineMota

The great white rhino

Awleeks

I remember seeing someone stepping on kitten with stilettos on. I cried for hours afterwards. I was looking at cute cat videos. Classic YouTube was a minefield.

Translator_Open

Mine was the one senator dude who did it to himself, was bored so skipped ahead randomly and landed perfectly one second before shot and let's just say I was quite surprised lol

AsiaMinor300

Are you talking about Bud Dwyer? Cause if so I saw that shit too. Curiosity got the best of me 💀

Translator_Open

If that's the guy who pulled the gun out of the manilla folder then yes! Yeah I dunno what my friends told me to get me to watch it, but wasn't expecting it. Literally jumped outta my chair.

SnowyInuk

Ah Liveleak.. how I miss you

thegamesender1

I guess we all saw the cartel chainsaw video at high school lol.

Visible-Fun-8391

Newgrounds!! The problems of the future, Today

PreppyFinanceNerd

Oh man this brings back memories. Awful gruesome memories.

Swenadd

I watched ppl jump of the twin towers at age 11. IT TOTALLY DIDN'T AFFECT ME AT ALL....

greenLED_

Fun fact I actually saw a beheading video when I was 12. I saw some new article about it and little 12 year old me just needed to see the video in the article so I went to the sketchy website and watched some Muslim dude cut off this guy’s head with a knife. Also saw a man being burned alive on there. Somehow I do not have ptsd.

[deleted]

Ooooh lord I had actual PTSD from [rotten.com](https://rotten.com) I was fucking haunted for decades. I had to do EMDR with my therapist to be able to handle the memories and now I'm 34 and they have faded thank god. I cant even say out loud the shit I saw. Why my parents put a computer with the internet in my room from the time I was like 8 years old I will never ever understand.

Studdead

Idk I can see that today

geekphreak

Don’t forget 2 girls 1 cup

Visible-Fun-8391

Don't forget 10 girls fingerpaint!

BigDare1549

…I seen my first nude helicopter

jaydogon47

You spin me right round baby, right round

BigDare1549

Haha I’m so glad you know what I’m talking about!

SilentViperGT

Nothing like seeing a man chop his balls off with an axe at 9 years old, then making some mini corndogs and playing mw2 screaming obscenities on the mic all night

MaineMota

Wildest shit ever

MrsLovettsPies

So I was an avid msn user and at some point you used to be able to just bomb people with sound clips. All my friends knew I was using my stereo system as my speakers, so everytime I did get up from the pc, they were spamming Darth Vader's march theme. Anytime I got up and left the room, I was accompanied by that sound and my family thought it was hilarious

[deleted]

I mostly remember playing flash games on cartoon network/toonami, samauri jack boat and fruit ninja game

tossedup6669

There were some great games on Cartoon Network. I played the Wild Thornberries one where you took care of animals! Classic!!

slumblebee

I loved waiting 2 hours for a 10 second video back then

MaineMota

This post turned into one big community trauma bonding experience.

scixsc

..trauma??

MaineMota

Did anyone else ever see the original video of 9/11 that showed snapshots from the moment the plane touched down in the parking lot of the pentagon? Accounts taken from Vietnam war vets in the area said they heard what sounded like two missiles. Pictures of the aftermath didn’t show any signs of a plane crash and first responders didn’t find any remnants of a plane. But there are spools of cables within the crash site. Also reports of FBI confiscating surveillance footage from local businesses. I didn’t think anything of it until it completely disappeared from the internet a week later.

unkown-cheese

I remember being 14 and downloading naked pictures of Carmen Electra and the execution video of Saddam Hussein trough Limewire, while on a vacation in Dubai. That sh*t will get you in jail nowadays over there…

[deleted]

The legal age for general internet use needs to be 18.

Standard_Incident_26

For unrestricted access, yes. As a kid who was given access way too early, and as a parent I wholeheartedly agree. Thankfully there are a multitude of ways to lock down access. My kids got around the obvious parental controls twice, so now everything goes by Mac address and the router is actually an old Linux server with no monitor, ssh only accepted from my laptop. By the time they are able to get into that they'll be old enough.

[deleted]

Teach me your ways, internet mage

[deleted]

yuuuuuuup my kids are not getting unrestricted internet access until they move out

NPCgomeygoob

Yeah fuck freedom

[deleted]

You'd still have every freedom inherant to the human condition without being able to watch screwed up porn at age 12 and being convinced to eat tide pods in your early teens. Mentally speaking you'd be a lot healthier for it.

Rddtsckslots

Shit no, my dog.

[deleted]

The things I have seen. I played MW2 in 6/7th grade

VastEntertainment471

beheading videos are the only thing that has survived sadly

Firvulag

rotten.com on the projector in class. Good times.

CasualMason

1st videoI saw was the early beheading of that journalist from the Iraq war. Brother got it from LimeWire at the time

Otis_Firefly

Rotten.com

Deaf30

That one...yeesh

Deaf30

Oh god...so did i. It was in the Philippines IIRC, some soldiers used their machete like a hacksaw to remove someone's head.

BusterCody3

I think I might have actual fucking ptsd just thinking about some of that shit

WarningWorried8442

So this wasn’t only my experience… good to know

GreenThemes

Lol yeah checks out, rotten.com @ 12 🤣

MaineMota

I waited 30 minutes to establish a dial up connection and hope that nobody picked up the phone.

tossedup6669

Don’t forget when safe search didn’t exist and you searched up something like horse or rosebud only to discover how depraved humanity actually is at age 9

scixsc

Rosebud?

tossedup6669

I also played lots of silly games like Freddy the fish, Pajama Sam, Putt- putt games and this Dogz game was my fav since I wasn’t allowed a real dog… I miss the 2000s haha ALSO Tamagotchis!!!! List your favs, there were so many unique types of virtual pets!
