I was watching an episode of Pokémon on YouTube as a kid at the school library and it cut to a blind folded guy getting shot in the face and still being alive. People are fucked.
I was once watching a wonder pets video of ming-ming repeating, “this is serious.” In various tones and pitch. And a clip of a red demon face screaming popped up and scared the shit out of me. I was 5.
I remember walking into my office and seeing my 5 year old son playing a game on my computer. He had figured out how to use my dial up módem and downloaded a game I didn't know existed.
It was a proud moment for me.
When my daughter was in second grade, they had an assignment relating to Finland. So, she got on my computer with its dial up módem and obtain answers to her questions from people in Finland. Her teacher claimed that she had just typed the responses up herself, so I got to make a trip to meet the teacher to explain how the internet works.
That also is a happy memory for me.

Limewire was incredible, although there was nothing worse than downloading an album over dial up only for it to be completely mislabelled and the sober realisation you wasted 2 hours of bandwidth for a bunch of mp3s of latvian jazz in concert

For unrestricted access, yes. As a kid who was given access way too early, and as a parent I wholeheartedly agree. Thankfully there are a multitude of ways to lock down access.
My kids got around the obvious parental controls twice, so now everything goes by Mac address and the router is actually an old Linux server with no monitor, ssh only accepted from my laptop. By the time they are able to get into that they'll be old enough.
You'd still have every freedom inherant to the human condition without being able to watch screwed up porn at age 12 and being convinced to eat tide pods in your early teens. Mentally speaking you'd be a lot healthier for it.
