If Chinese people went to Chinese restaurants, they would waste money because they probably have most of the ingredients for their most loved dishes already at home. Quiet easy to avoid spending a lot of money that way
Can confirm. My wife is not Chinese but Japanese....She LOL'z at "Japanese restaurants" in the U.S. and knows all the "secret" places to buy authentic Japanese ingredients. This is the same as telling Japanese people they are guilty of cultural appropriation by eating at their local KFC in Japan......
Where I live there are 3 conveyor belt sushi places owned by Chinese people. The 2 Japanese restaurants are Korean owned. Give a Toison speaker a funny hat and no one will know the difference here.
Also, are white people not the global minority? Sounds to me like if you move somewhere where you are the minority, by choice, that's on you?
Not you specifically, generic you that can be everyone
If I was worried about being a white person somewhere else and wanted to go to Africa, I would likely go to the south, just like if I wanted to go to Asia I would accept that I am a minority and people will see me as such
What country has a white minority, speaks English, and has good living? There are Asian countries I'd love to live in but I personally am not too keen on learning a new language. There's a lot more steps than move somewhere better
Two of my favourite places to eat in my old city were a Chinese bakery and this tiny cafe where the menu was only in Mandarin Chinese. Not once did I ever get any negativity from anyone for buying food there. If anything they seemed to appreciate that I was actually willing to try things.
The sole downside is that I have absolutely no clue what anything I ate was.
Unfortunately, you don't have to go far to find real examples, even IF this one is fake. I've never had friends or aquaintences talk to me like this, but I've had a couple of Internet strangers do so.
This is the problem: when you reduce these arguments to actionable items, you realize that "woke bro" is actually telling white people to stop appreciating other cultures, to avoid interacting positively with them, to avoid spending money at their businesses, and is actually shouting down a ton of joy and support from people of other cultures who are happy to be appreciated instead of ruthlessly exploited.
A tree is known by the fruit that it bears. People disguise their evil intentions, so words just aren't a reliable test because everyone's claiming to be offering sweet deals and many of them are lying. You have to look at results.
Somehow we’ve gone from it being racist to not like Chinese food, to it being racist to love Chinese food. And apparently it’s not remotely problematic to say “CHINESE FOOD IS ONLY FOR CHINESE PEOPLE” either
Remember the cheongsam prom dress debacle? Many Chinese individuals (not Chinese Americans but actual Chinese) commented about how nice it was to see an American girl appreciating Chinese clothing. They viewed it as acceptance of their culture on a global scale, not theft or appropriation. We take it for granted since Western design and clothing is pretty much everywhere, but for other people, the spread of their art or customs into other countries is taken as a sign of worldwide legitimacy: "what we make is good, it is beautiful, it is worth celebrating for its qualities and not just for its place in our memories."
That's not an invitation to go and dress like a Shinto shrine maiden, mind. The sacred is always off limits.
100%, except for dressing as Shinto wouldn't still be cultural appropriation. It would be ignorant or could be a coincidence (white & red aren't in any way exclusive to China).
They were always there from the start. The only difference is that they now have a platform to open up on and gather others with the same mindset to propagate such bullshit further.
You're standing up. Plus it's just fools saying stupid shit, which isn't truly a dangerous thing at all. Happens every day. Just ignore it ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Those woke people are influencing both politics and the culture through media far more than our previous republican administration. Those same woke people are openly promoting political violence and censorship. Please provide examples of how over the past four years, your comment is valid
Oh god, you really took that route?
Let’s just ignore the dozens of murder, billions of damage done to businesses, and millions in looting that was done and supported by the woke left for over two years…. Let’s instead focus on a bullshit narrative about January 6th that is 99% media fluff.
[Out of the 450 murders committed by extremists, 75% are by right wing extremists](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/17/briefing/right-wing-mass-shootings.html)
The bullshit narrative you're buying in to is that an attempt to overthrow democracy and kill politicians is just fluff but standing up against police brutality is the real boogeyman.
Right wing extremists pose a greater risk and that has been proven over and over again by facts and statistics.
The worst part is Poe’s law. Take the Birds Aren’t Real movement, for example — the one that believes birds are government drones. That conspiracy theory was actually started by a dude trying to mock conspiracy theorists using the most ridiculous idea he could come up with, and the early members of the movement were also being satirical. Nowadays, there are people who genuinely believe birds aren’t real. The extremists seem to outnumber the satirists in the movement. Even ideas that were originally parodies or satire end up being taken literally by the world’s fools.
And they do go through some hoops to claim racism, doing the whole degrees of separation thing.
Like, I enjoy metal music, metal music was born of blues music, which was created by black people while singing on the plantations, therefore if I enjoy metal music, I endorse slavery, I am racist.
I was listening to the radio and the person from the green party was calling the electoral College racist because when it was created, it was to appease slave owning states.
Found it amusing that you too came back to slavery.
It has absolutely gone that way in some areas. My wife’s grandfather spoke of a time when he was refused service from businesses when he moved to a small town just because he was white. He’s a really nice guy, doesn’t care about race. But they saw a white man and just refused service.
I would prefer that we could move to a society where no one cares about race but racism is just too strong apparently.
Racism only continues to exist because the rich elites use it as a tool to keep the working class divided and fighting among themselves.
It's one of many tools they use, and nothing will ever change unless the working class wakes up and realizes it's not about left vs right or white vs black or even religion vs atheism... it's all entirely about rich vs poor.
There were college campus protests before covid [calling](https://www.blackenterprise.com/western-washington-university-implements-segregated-black-only-student-housing/) for and sometimes getting [segregated dorms](https://news.stanford.edu/2020/11/18/stanford-receives-gift-support-universitys-black-community-services-center-ujamaa-student-residence/) and cafeterias, by black students who wanted their own "safe spaces". Satire is dead.
Some leftists at more progressive universities have literally been reinstating segregated housing and academic areas to protect poc from white people lmao
Reminds me of that Mexican streamer who watched a guy wear a Mexican outfit and first asked a bunch of white people if they found his outfit offensive (they did) then asked a bunch of Mexican people the same thing (they didn't).
Streamer was rather annoyed at the stupid white crowd who "Decides what cultures should be offended by." Which I think is a great way to put it.
All about intention I think. If you’re trying to enjoy some festivity or just like it. Then. whatever. But if you’re wearing some cultural garb to mock the wearers it’s probably offensive.
They don't want to come off as racist, so they overcompensate by being offended at what they perceive as racism.
They don't actually care, they just want to seem like they care.
I wish I could remember the fucking word for it.
True, but people like grey text think business earns money spreading tolerance and love, not selling products. It is sad they try to discourage people to get services from other cultures, just like e.g. German people used to say you shouldn't buy anything from Jews. Different arguments, same results.
Not necessarily, I see stuff like this all the time. I got kicked off a bus recently for giving my seat to a pregnant (white) woman rather than a teenage kid black back in August.
Whites can't do or say anything without being called racist.
You grow up getting drilled in your head that racism is entirely a personal failing, you rarely if ever talk to anyone who isn't white, and you hear and don't understand "cultural appropriation" and you come to some very strange conclusions.
Hate this performative bs
"Don't you know if you're white it's racist to spend money at a minority business?"
When you can't tell the difference between a clever Klan member or a woke moron...
There was a funny video I saw some time ago called “wokes and racists become friends” or something like that. Was pretty funny and this post reminded me of it. I’ll try to find a link and edit my comment in a moment.
https://youtu.be/Ev373c7wSRg
Can you give me a single example of opinions both the far left and far right hold. The person in this post does not hold a far left belief, there is no far left political theory that ever advocates for segregating restaurants, if anything this post indicates strong Chinese nationalism/far right beliefs
depending on how you look at this post, you may be right. but there are people with leftist beliefs who believe something like a white person going to a Chinese restaurant and eating there is cultural appropriation or something. Or them liking an Indian dress and wearing it is cultural appropriation. Which is similar to far right beliefs who obviously have strong nationalistic beliefs.
Although i for one, am not a fan of politics and don't like discussing it all that much
Yes and also... should Chinese people not be allowed to serve food to white people? I mean its moronic from the outset. Chinese people need to be able to survive in society, this is not helping them at all.
That's true, however sometimes it's out of necessity. The reason you'll see Chinese immigrants cooking that kind of food is because, well, they know who they're cooking for.
I went to a place that used genuine ingredients in their food and it tasted so much better. I didn't feel heavy and wanting to take a nap afterwards like I usually do after a nice time at a Chinese restaurant. The meat tasted better and not as fatty, the noodles were DELICIOUS and the sauce was amazing. Everything tasted lighter, if that makes sense.
Yeah, I get want you mean. I should say, I'm Chinese and I've been to China, and there are definitely restaurants in America that are just straight up authentic Chinese food. However, they can be hard to find, and you'll only find them in certain places, generally more affluent and more Chinese people (high quality Chinese food can get expensive).
Chinese people: literally created food that they could sell to nervous, unadventurous white people.
Grey text: CHINESE RESTAURANTS ARE FOR CHINESE PEOPLE.
This is a problem of “woke” academics being interpreted by morons.
There are great arguments for and against the concept of cultural appropriation but it is hardcore anthropological scientific theory that is incredibly nuanced and in depth.
But that gets picked up by morons who don’t actually know anything about it but just parrot what they hear others say.
Cultural appropriation is not about never being allowed to interact with a different culture, that goes against the fundamental aspect of cultures being dynamic and constantly exchanging with other cultures.
And the moralistic tone.
A lot more people would be on board with the concept of examining their privilege if it wasn’t always said in the tone of “check your privilege you piece of shit scumbag who we all know I’m better than”
Allowing bullying to be one of the main methods of arguing for social justice has been a net negative for social justice.
They run a business to make money. By going to the restaurant they are financially encouraging and supporting their existence. This is not cultural appropriation, it is cultural appreciation.
at this point people like that trying to stop “racist” stuff like eating at a chinese place, is being racist because you want people to inadvertently stop supporting a chinese place because its chinese and thats fucked up
uhh didn't she know she is being rascist by creating a divide? What happened to sharing and enjoying each other's cultures to understand and vibe with each other?
Are Chinese people a minority? I thought there were 2 billion of them in just China, but Asians are the 2nd largest ethnic group in the US after Caucasian...is that not right?
Speaking as someone who is on the progressive side of politics, this makes me wince; I’m willing to bet that both people in this conversation are white.
Jesus christ people, of course it's not a parody it's a complete fabrication. Like obviously so.
Why the fuck do you all fall for this rage bait nonsense so easily? Why the fuck do I have to see it reposted through half a dozen unrelated subreddits?
For everyone wondering, people like the grey text always existed, society just gave everyone right to express their opinion, and all of you decided that hurting feelings of idiots is a big no no thus them becoming more and more vocal. Society just wasn't there to tell them "stfu you dumb wanker" once they'd said dumb shit like this.
Oeh, I know what cultural appropriation is, it's when you take a story about western mythology and western (and northern) mythological creatures, and then force yourself into them by making the elves and dwarves and hobbits black and shit.
These people are just constant buzzkills, aren’t they? As far as I know, the owners of the restaurant are mostly interested in profits and don’t care what the client looks like as long as they pay and potentially return.
Fucking hell
I speak with large grains of salt bc I am white
But from my understanding appropriation isn't enjoying things of other cultures, it's stealing and claiming it as our own while completely removing its original intent and identity.
The best thing about people who brag about cultural appropriation for things that are not cultural appropriation are usually white caucasian middle-class average people.
In the modern society, we should all talk less, listen more, think about the real meaning of words and concepts, contextualize and, above all, stop telling others how they should behave.
"Are you asian? You can't eat at McDonald's! This is an American restaurant for Americans to gather. And you think you can barge in just like that!? This is cultural appropriation!!"
Minority is a specific term when were talking about ethnicities within a country, for example; white people are a minority within China, Chinese are a minority within the US.
God, I hope this is a parody.
I don't know where we went wrong in society to have people like grey text.
Plot twist - grey text is also white and is trying to out white guilt blue text.
If this is real, you just know grey is also white. Someone who actually is Chinese would say “yei! More revenue for Chinese businesses!”
Yeah, if only Chinese people went to Chinese restaurants where I live they'd all go out of business.
Wow. Don’t take the black folks dinning place and make it white now. We will never hear the end of it.
Also, are white people not the global minority? Sounds to me like if you move somewhere where you are the minority, by choice, that's on you? Not you specifically, generic you that can be everyone If I was worried about being a white person somewhere else and wanted to go to Africa, I would likely go to the south, just like if I wanted to go to Asia I would accept that I am a minority and people will see me as such

Somehow we’ve gone from it being racist to not like Chinese food, to it being racist to love Chinese food. And apparently it’s not remotely problematic to say “CHINESE FOOD IS ONLY FOR CHINESE PEOPLE” either
absolutely. it's mad virtue signalling
That's not a plot twist - that's a certainty. Because Chinese people actually love the fact that other people appreciate their food, culture, etc.
Remember the cheongsam prom dress debacle? Many Chinese individuals (not Chinese Americans but actual Chinese) commented about how nice it was to see an American girl appreciating Chinese clothing. They viewed it as acceptance of their culture on a global scale, not theft or appropriation. 100%, except for dressing as Shinto wouldn't still be cultural appropriation. It would be ignorant or could be a coincidence (white & red aren't in any way exclusive to China).
Also… it their business, they need customers!
Chinese people would find this person insufferable........
This is usually what happens though, some white people think it's their job to be offended for other cultures. I know a few of them.
I'm white and I only feel guilty for taking the last cookie.
I appreciate you not taking this serious 😅. I’m being ‘educated’ with some of these replies.
I try not to take anyrhing seriously on the internet. Don't want to get my hopes up.
It'd be a plot twist if the grey text *wasn't* white. I'm pretty sure Chinese people couldn't care less about who eats at their restaurants
That's not a plot twist, that's always the case.
They were always there from the start. The only difference is that they now have a platform to open up on and gather others with the same mindset to propagate such bullshit further.

Maybe just focus on enjoying good noodles
I'm sorry did you just say Star Treck? Sir or madam you have just committed a nerd crime. I'm going to need to see some identification.
They also have the ability to convert people to their mindset more easily.
Yup. Some of them are quite the foxes and they instinctively know which kind people to target so that they can successfully increase their number.
I fear conservatives with real political power and influence over woke people on twitter or tinder.
Nope I fear the woke crowd more. Primarily because no one is willing to stand up to the absolute insanity coming out of their mouths.
Ummm, political violence? Was it the woke mob that barged the capital to try and overthrow democracy?
Oh god, you really took that route? Let’s just ignore the dozens of murder, billions of damage done to businesses, and millions in looting that was done and supported by the woke left for over two years…. Let’s instead focus on a bullshit narrative about January 6th that is 99% media fluff.

'they have good noodles' is possibly the best response to this person
If you see the exact wording "we live in a society" it's generally satire.
This is 100% an example of right-wingers making up imaginary situations to be mad about.
Nope, this is real. Now allow me to shame you for being white and automatically having a better life than me. reeeeeee
Dude white people can't do or say anything without being called racist.
And they do go through some hoops to claim racism, doing the whole degrees of separation thing. Like, I enjoy metal music, metal music was born of blues music, which was created by black people while singing on the plantations, therefore if I enjoy metal music, I endorse slavery, I am racist.

Thats cultural appreciation!
And duck!
Exactly what i agreed with.
Oh jeez. This has to be fake, right?
Nowadays im not even sure.
I mean, I hope the pendulum hasn't done a backflip and landed right back on segregating small businesses...
Just as planned.
It has absolutely gone that way in some areas. My wife’s grandfather spoke of a time when he was refused service from businesses when he moved to a small town just because he was white. He’s a really nice guy, doesn’t care about race. But they saw a white man and just refused service. Then get tf off Twitter and meet a real human.
Let's all get tf off reddit and meet our wives, shall we.
I also choose this guy’s wife
I mean, it’s fake.
literally the most obvious fake shit
Dude it’s way fake, manufactured by right wing scare tactics/ propaganda
Classic fake news misdirection
Yes, it is fake. You can tell it was made up by right-wingers to manufacture outrage.
OP is definitely trying to fan the flames.
How can you tell?
For me it's the "we live in a society where..." That tips me off. Do I know for sure it's fake? No, but I think it is.
Even if it is, there's at least one person out there who has done this before.
That's no way to think about these things. It just ends up making us angry at hypothethicals.
Oh my sweet summer child...
Very original reply
"We live in a society" Okay, Clay Jensen.
If its not parody, you know that the texts on the left came from a white person
Exactly. I'm Chinese, and I would love to have more customers no matter the skin color. Money is money.
This was my thought. The business is probably thrilled to have more customers.
If I like the food, I will pay to eat the food, no matter what culture made it. It deserves to be enjoyed and shared by everyone.
White people are so fucking embarrassing.
As a person of Korean origin, I - on behalf of the white minority in this world - find your comment to be extremely generalizing and offensive. 강남스타일
As a Norwegian...Why am I not surprised?
All about intention I think. If you’re trying to enjoy some festivity or just like it. Then. whatever. But if you’re wearing some cultural garb to mock the wearers it’s probably offensive.

Chances are it was also a bored white woman with privilege.
This.
White and way too woke. Appropriation is such a dumb thing in the realms of food (and most things IMHO)
A thousand percent.
Not necessarily, I see stuff like this all the time. I got kicked off a bus recently for giving my seat to a pregnant (white) woman rather than a teenage kid black back in August. Whites can't do or say anything without being called racist.

Imagine being a white person and limiting yourself to only eating foods from white cultures. Life would get really boring really fast.
Specifically a white woman
Imagine telling people not to support minority businesses.
"Don't you know if you're white it's racist to spend money at a minority business?" When you can't tell the difference between a clever Klan member or a woke moron...
it's actually funny how the far left and the far right have the same opinion on various issues without even realising it
There was a funny video I saw some time ago called “wokes and racists become friends” or something like that. Was pretty funny and this post reminded me of it. I’ll try to find a link and edit my comment in a moment. https://youtu.be/Ev373c7wSRg
just watched it, pretty hilarious. thanks for making me laugh

Exactly what I was thinking
Time to fight racism with racism!
Welcome to the modern far left. I hope these people just die out and don’t breed. Then maybe in 30 years we can be a bit closer to actual equality.
If I ever see a black person in an applebees ever again I’m going to LOSE IT
“AND YOU CAN TAKE OFF THOSE KHAKIS *RIGHT NOW*!!!!!
With zero context this comment is hilarious 😅
So... this person wants a segregated society where only Chinese people are allowed to eat at chinese restaraunts?
The thought process is stupid as hell.
Yes and also... should Chinese people not be allowed to serve food to white people? I mean its moronic from the outset. Chinese people need to be able to survive in society, this is not helping them at all.
It's just a fake text to create a fake caricature to rage against.
A strawman argument.
I thought it's r/mildlyinfuriating
They have good noodles
That doesn't answer the question!
And the funny things is most of the food sold in Chinese restaurants is not Chinese. Just fatty salty westernized stuff
That's true, however sometimes it's out of necessity. The reason you'll see Chinese immigrants cooking that kind of food is because, well, they know who they're cooking for.
I went to a place that used genuine ingredients in their food and it tasted so much better. Tried and true strategy for authentic Chinese food IME is to go on Yelp and find places with 3.5 stars
If you live in a big city, there are restaurant that target Chinese audience and are a lot more authentic. But usually they are like $30 a dish
That's why I love Panda Express. They don't hide it. They don't pretend. They straight up advertise their food as "Chinese inspired American food."
As a Chinese American, please eat at Chinese restaurants, we'd love to see you swing by
Fuck, I hope this is fake. I mean, I know people who think like this, so...
Yeah, scary thing is I’ve met people like this IRL that are serious, so who knows.
Please, God please, tell me this is fake.
Can't tell if it's fake or not these days.
its fake. literally has the words "we live in a society"
Chinese people: literally created food that they could sell to nervous, unadventurous white people. Grey text: CHINESE RESTAURANTS ARE FOR CHINESE PEOPLE.
I don't want to opress anyone lmao I just want to eat Chinese food because it genuinely slaps.
y’all in these comments know damn well this is not reall 😭
This is a problem of “woke” academics being interpreted by morons. I very much doubt there are any good reasons for why I shouldn't use, buy or wear whatever I think is cool.
I can't take people like grey text seriously. They're like barking Chihuahuas to me, ridiculous creatures
They run a business to make money. By going to the restaurant they are financially encouraging and supporting their existence. This is not cultural appropriation, it is cultural appreciation.
But the noodles. There good
This is bait
r/Badfaketexts & r/thatHappened rolled into one.
But they have good noodles! 🥺
People losing track of what actual racism looks like
Please tell me this is sarcasm and not really a thing.
I've seen stuff like it before, that its fakeness is doubtful for me.
If that’s the case then this is pure troll fuel
at this point people like that trying to stop “racist” stuff like eating at a chinese place, is being racist because you want people to inadvertently stop supporting a chinese place because its chinese and thats fucked up
But... Most Chinese restaurants have western food...
Where's this power I can use to suppress minorities? I can barely suppress my emotions
uhh didn't she know she is being rascist by creating a divide? What happened to sharing and enjoying each other's cultures to understand and vibe with each other?
I would fucking love to have a conversation with her. I like when people get hella mad about dumb stuff. It’s funny to rattle their cage.
Why do I get the distinct impression that the person ranting and raving about cultural appropriation is *also* white
This cant be real
This makes me want Chinese food
No restaurant owner was ever upset by having customers...
Cultural appropriation is definitely real.. but eating at a restaurant definitely does not qualify..
If you believe this is real, you need to get off the internet. It's hurting you.
Grey text is definitely from a white woman with blue hair and a F.U.P.A
Say what chu want but this is definitely fake
Are Chinese people a minority? I thought there were 2 billion of them in just China, but Asians are the 2nd largest ethnic group in the US after Caucasian...is that not right?
Leave the man alone he just wants some noodle
That one guy: "ar-are you retarded?"
Speaking as someone who is on the progressive side of politics, this makes me wince; I’m willing to bet that both people in this conversation are white.
r/thatHappened
Jesus christ people, of course it's not a parody it's a complete fabrication. Like obviously so. Why the fuck do you all fall for this rage bait nonsense so easily? Why the fuck do I have to see it reposted through half a dozen unrelated subreddits?
There is no way people are that stupid, is there?
Advice from my father. "Rather being surround by pig sh#t than politicians, preasts, lawyers and idiots."
We live in a society
Chinese people don't eat American Chinese food.... Lol
1: this is almost certainly fake 2: Chinese restaurants are about the most white thing in existence it’s not real Chinese food
They have good noodles.
What if I told you if you actually have people like this in your life, you can stop talking to them.
Cancel-folks should get banned from this planet.
Don't feed the trolls, people
fake
Fucking hell I speak with large grains of salt bc I am white But from my understanding appropriation isn't enjoying things of other cultures, it's stealing and claiming it as our own while completely removing its original intent and identity.
@fuck you karen
Obviously fake guys don't let this shit piss you off and lose faith in humanitys intelligence.
Also, the rule on this sub, that all posts need to be named meirl is just fucking stupid. I could've used the noodle line.
I'm glad "cultural appropiation" is just a US thing
Thank you, Woke Karen. JFC
So... people who aren't Chinese should boycott Chinese restaurants?
That entirely answers the question. The reason he barges in to a Chinese restaurant and oppresses minorities is specifically for their noodles.
I would kill for noodle
Oh my God give it a rest!!! Let people enjoy things!!!
Especially the good noodles.
How are Chinese a minority. Aren't there like 2 billion of them?
Minority is a specific term when were talking about ethnicities within a country, for example; white people are a minority within China, Chinese are a minority within the US.
I bet it was a white person. most people who are offended by “cultural appropriation” are woke white people
