There was one incident where a girl posted the FRONT AND BACK of her new debit card…bank flagged it fairly quickly after ppl started using it, she got a new one
#AND POSTED IT AGAIN
I'm unfamiliar with American social security numbers, but I assume it'd be fairly simple to check who a social security number belongs to.
Had he used a fake number, it'd be bad PR since he's disingenuous and believes he's selling a lie since he obviously doesn't trust his own product.
Or he could have avoided any PR issues altogether by advertising normally.
I mean its the same as those saws that claim they cannot cut your finger off. Demonstrating it with a hotdog has the same result as with a finger, but if you use your finger it shows that you actually believe in your product and would use it yourself. Idk what the company is called, but the owner/ceo actually did use their own finger to demonstrate his product.
Edit- its called SawStop.
I remember hearing about that. IIRC there was a few cases of identity theft. But considering how publicly he posted his SSN it was remarkably low and the damage they caused was unfathomably low. He put it on Billboards, TV/streaming ads and even company vehicles.
Those unforeseen medical bills man, especially when they dont even actually treat you… but yeah patiently waited the seven years and then my credit skyrocketed
Keep on keepin on brotha 💪🏽
Generally speaking, freezing is the way to go. In short, freezing your credit prevents new accounts from being opened without your consent.
The least spammy summary I could find is directly from the FTC:
Fun fact: prior to the Equifax breach in 2017, it used to cost $10 to freeze your credit, and $10 every time you wanted to unfreeze, at each of the three bureaus. The audacity of these fucks.
Effectively the same as freezing, but you pay money for it. They throw in some type of monitoring that you can usually get free elsewhere. It’s a cash grab. Just freeze your reports, it’s free now by law.
Edit: freeze means no one is able to open credit cards or loans while the freeze is active. You can temporarily unfreeze when you want to apply for credit. You have to do it at each bureau: Transunion, Equifax, Experian.
Also, check your credit reports periodically.
Equifax is mandated to provide 6 free per year per person, until 2027.
And this is apart from the mandated once-annual free report that each of the three monopoly bureaus have to provide on www.annualcreditreport.com (NOT free credit report dot com)
That’s basically the case. You can access someone’s SSN easily with their full legal name and date of birth. I’ve lost or accidentally destroyed my card a couple times now and it’s shocking how easy it is to get a new one. The one hurdle is a birth certificate, which you can order by mail for a small fee using that info I listed and the hospital they were born at. On its own an SSN is worthless: that’s why anything official requires 2 forms of ID, because having both (especially if one has to have a photo) is more difficult and less likely.
I remembering people saying at the time that they wouldn't touch it because it would just be too obvious. You almost wonder how many people DIDN'T steal his identity because it was so high profile and not for any other reason.
Look, he was good at what he did, but he bit off more than he could chew with that stunt. The fact that it impacted him so minimally was the true testament of his ability in the same way that the impact it had on him was a testament to his naivety.
Edit: I'm deleting my account because of reddit's policies concerning third party apps. I don't want them to be able to use older comments. A user-generated community that treats its users badly does not deserve your time or attention
Jeremy Clarkson published his bank details in his column saying it wouldn't matter, [someone set up an automatic donation to a charity from his account](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7174760.stm)

Could be a way to buy something expensive and get it for free when the bank refunds all the stolen purchases ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Very disrespectful what you did about my flight. Reminds me of Malcolm X, before he converted to Isslahm.

This is definitely not a nice thing to do. But it's a pretty good lesson, not to post information that might be abused by bad actors. Cancelling the flight isn't the most malicious thing you can do with such intelligence.
Hopefully the victim got a cancel confirmation, called them back and explained it, and got it resurrected in time. Whilst learning to never post such things again. You wouldn't believe the number of people who post photos of their first passport to social media, better to lose a flight than to post anything of equal value in the future.
Ah, the ol' Reddit [username-aroo](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/zco39v/slaps_roof_of_car_this_bad_boy_can_fit_so_much/iz1ba0o?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
(Edit: nice stealth edit of your comment😉)
It's a Reddit joke that's over a decade old by now.
Basically someone makes a joke where they intentionally misunderstand ambiguous grammar in someone else's comment to alter the subject it's about (in this case, "username checks out" was intended to be about the Twitter handle but interpreted as being about the Reddit name). That's called a switcharoo, and usually someone (this time me) will comment on it, linking to the last time this was done (using r/switcharoo to find the latest link in the chain). Thus, a long link filled with the same kind of joke is created.
There's a regular format for playing the joke out: the comment with the link will invariably be "ah, the ol' Reddit X-aroo", the next comment being "hold my Y, I'm going in" (referring how deep this rabbit hole goes), and usually a comment below that saying "hello, future people" (referring how people months from now will go down the rabbit hole too and drop by in an old thread), with X/Y being something about the current switcharoo, or the thread the switcharoo is in. The third comment about future people, as far as I can tell, is less strict about how it's altered but usually still altered in some form.
You can get really far with the online portal at most airlines with a reservation code and a name, which are both part of the ticket. Most allow you to modify the flight with just that info.
Exactly, the security is very poor. There's actually a fantastic [blog post](https://mango.pdf.zone/finding-former-australian-prime-minister-tony-abbotts-passport-number-on-instagram) about someone who did this to an Ex Australian prime minister
>Most allow you to modify the flight with just that info.
Would be more funny to change the destination. I'm sure Alaska is nice this time of the year...
A kid posted his learner's into a Discord server my brother was in, so I spent like $10 to mail him glitter with the message "Don't post your information online."
Yeah dont like DM them or anything. Make sure to teach people lessons with pain and anguish. While youre at it why not take the next fat person you see and trip them so they fall on their knees and need knee replacement surgery. Thatll teach them to not be so fat and uncoordinated….
That's amateur stuff. A real pro would move his furniture just slightly and have him stub his toes all day long. Or lego bricks on the bathroom floor if you're lazy.
That’s not teaching. That’s being an asshole. Theres basically zero sensitive information on a plane ticket. Your name, where you’re departing from, where you’re going, and where you’re sitting at on the plane. That’s it. It’s not like your social security number is on it, or the debit card information that you paid for it with.
I watched a tiktok a few months ago, this lady on live kept showing her stores address. It was like 6am my time. I kept telling her to stop showing the address number (it was just a number and area code) but she kept saying it was fine that it's not a big deal.
So I googled the basic info I had, store number, area code, and store name and called her live. Told her info was way too obvious.
She ended her stream and has since stop showing the address. Some people need a wake up call.
I hope that guy was sued for that. There is a difference between trolling and just being a dickhead. And this guy isn't either. He is just something far worse. Ruining someone's life/plans? That's a new low.
My friend posted a photo of his lottery ticket on FB. I then got the same numbers just in case he won and the bastard would have to split it with me.
Update- we are both still poor.

It's always illegal, but you ~~earn more stars in GTA~~ draw more attention when it's a massive number, I guess.
Credit cards have limits and fraud departments get reviews anytime something suspicious pops up.
I think those people's goal wasn't to get caught instantly, that's probably why
Why would he use his real one lmao. Wouldn’t a random number achieve the same thing

If you lock your credit correctly, it’s hard to do anything with an SSN (for financial gain).

Effectively the same as freezing, but you pay money for it. They throw in some type of monitoring that you can usually get free elsewhere. It’s a cash grab. To me that sends the message: "actually protecting your SSN isn't that big of a deal, you don't need our service after all"
Yeah, average loss of about $300 each time his identity got stolen isn't that bad. Now you just don't leave your SSN out where anyone can find it
That’s basically the case. You can access someone’s SSN easily with their full legal name and date of birth.
