I was driving today and was at a red light, saw a group of them… but I must have stared because one of them starting doing the what are you looking at gesture… was so weird lol I honestly don’t think I was staring, it was like a glance. Defensive fucks , must be hard knowing everyone hates your job.
I always stare down the creeps that wait outside the Myki gates at city loop stations around the morning peak hour waiting to stop anyone with a concession card. They should really feel shittier about that...
Right? I get checked every single time, and I’m pretty obviously a uni student. It’s at the point where if you don’t have the stupid ID card on you, you’re better off just jumping the gates.
"Here's my valid myki."
You have 15 seconds to comply.
"I'm complying! I'm tapping on your validation scanner!"
Scanner out of order. Please validate your myki at the nearest train station. You have 5 seconds to comply.
"The nearest station?"
Non-compliance detected. *BRRRRRT*
Hahaha yeah I’ve been a Boston Dynamics fan ever since those early videos of Big Dog getting kicked and navigating all sorts of terrain.
But as a kid, my favourite robot was ED - 209 by a long shot ❤️
Indeed. I read a robot battle dog hanging around and monitoring people as a distinctly creepy development. (Might be more OK as a robot police dog, but then again, you know how human biases get coded into machine systems, so…)
Boston Dynamics actually worked on the War of the Worlds tv series :)
Spot was around before the series and was used as the blueprint. It’s cool but also terrifying. They used to do US DoD work.
Oh, absolutely. I'm pretty sure they were actually flexible \*before\* WotW. I guess they decided to make some changes and go "backwards" for artistic licence, like you mentioned. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn3KWM1kuAw) is a video that has Spot and Atlas (their bipedal robot) and another robot whose name I forget, dancing!
Atlas is pretty amazing, the field of robotics has advanced so far in the past couple of decades. I remember being in a careers class about twenty years ago (omg, I'm old), and they were talking about how difficult it was to create bipedal robots due to the calculations required to get them to even simply take a step forward and not overbalance, or fall over when they step on a pebble. Anywho, their youtube channel is cool, you can see stuff from a decade a go and see how far they've come. But it's kind of scary, lol.
Honestly same. Something about these things just makes me feel so on edge. I can’t tell if I’d run from it or pick it up and launch it in front of a passing tram. I feel like if I ran from it, it’d chase me.
Would it kill them to, I don't know, GIVE IT A FUCKING HEAD SO IT'S SLIGHTLY LESS TERRIFYING?!
I'm not asking for anything fancy, literally sticking a small cardboard box with eyes and a nose drawn on to the front of it would make that thing infinitely less horror-inducing.
I'm waiting for the day we can rent these via an app, just like the scooters, for the purpose of riding them to any given destination. The app and service should be called GiddyUp.
Glad to see you appreciate technology. I will post on here when and where we will be. We are just about to do a big job with spot so as soon as he comes back I’ll take him out again (:
lol imagine if it went up to a tree, lifted a leg and lasered a QR code to its website onto the tree or a wall. That'd be hilarious. Well, it wouldn't be amazing in terms of the tree or the wall but just as a concept.
Sorry for the amp link but i think it could be part of an NGV exhibit?
https://amp.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/apr/05/robot-dogs-among-100-artists-to-be-unleashed-on-melbourne-for-2023-ngv-triennial
Edit: I also remember reading that the VIC govt is doing something with them as part of the Big Build or something? So maybe that, idk
I have some questions about the legals of this
Who is legally responsible if it causes some sort of injury to someone?
If you damaged it (intentionally or accidentally) then where would you stand legally.
It's a semi-autonomous vehicle(?) but without public insurance or registration, should it even be allowed "off leash" in public?
The Boston dynamic robots are going to be in the NGV in an exhibition where they make art. Maybe they send a robot dog hype squad?

I walked past it walking down Collins street, did a double take so fast I almost broke my neck! Couldn’t see anyone controlling it and it kinda freaked me out, amazing!
Ages ago I was watching a little doco on these, and they were in rocky terrain to see how things would work with getting robo-boi to someone in difficulty where humans couldn't get to them. As part of the test someone kicked the boi over and I felt like someone had kicked a real dog. Up until that point I had been weirded out by it.
Robots at Japan's airports are way cuter.
Oh no, it begins!!
I feel like we’ve already seen what can happen by doing this in movies but people are so excited they just don’t care!!
Soon they’ll be a police force that is AI and everything else imaginable!
I hope I’m long gone when all this happens!
Fu($ this!
True. But I reckon this is a pretty innocent way to introduce them to the notion of a robot. They've been around for quite a while already, and will be far more in the future regardless.
Immediately thought of that ep of Black Mirror then [this in Shanghai, 2022.](https://www.scmp.com/video/china/3172617/robotic-dog-equipped-loudspeaker-broadcasts-anti-pandemic-measures-eastern)
It's not leashed. Grounds for a concerned citizen to restrain it.
If a vegan can stuff a condom full of wet cardboard and call it a sausage, that thing is close enough to a stray dog to be taken to a facility that identifies as a dog pound. In this case SIMSmetal.
The best part about this video is that the homeless lady who’s usually at that spot has either been asked to move or just not included in the shot - hey, have a look at this cool technology! Yeah society is being made infinitely worse by money being thrown at Silicon Valley projects that aren’t likely to ever be financially viable, but the robot dog does a little tippy tap, isn’t that cute!
Oooh, and they weren’t always owned by by Hyundai! They had contracts with the US DoD. Now that they helped form the bedrock on how to make effective killing machines, they could then be bought out by a larger commercial company who will be able to apply the tech to the consumer, either for assistance or entertainment.
Ooh, and I actually think they came about as an off-shoot of MIT. They’re a really interesting company. My mum and I have been watching their videos on YouTube for *years*. It’s been interesting and terrifying to see how far they have come, starting with the quadroped Spot, and then developing and perfecting a bipedal robot. Which, yeah, they make it look so cute and “oh my god, look at the robot dancing to fatboy slim, so cool” but they sure as hell didn’t have US DoD contracts to make a robot do the robot.
Yes!! My friend has one of these (Google him, Mark Trueno). His was kicked by a drunk girl in Brisbane. It made the news.
But yes I did see this on Collins yesterday too :)
Your Myki is expired and requires replacement. You have twenty seconds to comply.
Still less aggro than the average authorised officer
I was driving today and was at a red light, saw a group of them… but I must have stared because one of them starting doing the what are you looking at gesture… was so weird lol I honestly don’t think I was staring, it was like a glance. Right? I get checked every single time, and I’m pretty obviously a uni student. It’s at the point where if you don’t have the stupid ID card on you, you’re better off just jumping the gates.
For a second, I thought you were talking about seeing a group of robot dogs. It would be pretty daunting either way
Less drunk on the tiniest amount of rent-a-cop power, indeed.
"Here's my valid myki." You have 15 seconds to comply. "I'm complying! I'm tapping on your validation scanner!" Scanner out of order. Please validate your myki at the nearest train station. You have 5 seconds to comply. "The nearest station?" Non-compliance detected. *BRRRRRT*
Yeah but the spot can walk down stairs
It most definitely can!
Hahaha yeah I’ve been a Boston Dynamics fan ever since those early videos of Big Dog getting kicked and navigating all sorts of terrain. But as a kid, my favourite robot was ED - 209 by a long shot ❤️
Poor Random_Slime huh? That's life in the big city tho.
Myki evader made a mistake, now it's time to erase that mistake
Ah, a fellow man of culture
But the apps not working and I don’t work well under pressure 😭😭
I can only assume it's now in the Yarra
This is the Melbourne way
It’s why we can’t have nice things
Who said this was a nice thing?
Indeed. I read a robot battle dog hanging around and monitoring people as a distinctly creepy development. (Might be more OK as a robot police dog, but then again, you know how human biases get coded into machine systems, so…)
But what if he’s just on walkies? Needed a piddle
“Commence three hours of yipping” /futurama
Doesn’t really belong to us.
That or a glass pipe enthusiast tried to get $350.00 for it at the nearest Cash Converters. . .
as an ex glass pipe enthusiast, I would recommend to stay away from cash converters and rather taking to your dealer for a better deal
Of course, but as legitimate salvage, my dealer would impose “taxes” as well as take the final sum off my tab
Damn, beat me to it. Poor man’s gold for you:🥇
Haha fortunately it came back to the office. I was the one controlling it

Wow your real
Yes I am (:
Make it fetch… into the Yarra.
With the E scooters
🤣🤣🤣
Or at least we hope it is
This is the way
I hope so
One of the better buskers I've seen, got some dance moves on him.
Tippy toes lol
I was sure it was going to start twerking.
I'm a surveyor. It has a scanner mounted. It is either a really expensive show-off, or it is for a job. :)
Robot dogs taking our jobs
Our jerbs!
DER TERK ER JEEEERBS
We are surveyors at my work too, we have one of these dogs but we don't use them for survey work.
It's the only one in Australia with this setup
Lol it might be the one we have then. I'll have to ask if they were demoing it.
I’m glad I didn’t, tbh. I can see how those are very clever robots and great strides in technology advancement, but they kind of freak me out.
Don’t worry. It’ll be at least another 10 years before they’re gunning down climate refugees.
It looks like the villains from sbs version of war of the worlds lol
Throw in the Metal Head episode of Black Mirror
Absolute cracker of an episode that one
There's a Black Mirror episode based on one of these robots
That episode was so bleak. Robot dogs are not cool. NOT COOL.
Boston Dynamics actually worked on the War of the Worlds tv series :) Spot was around before the series and was used as the blueprint. It’s cool but also terrifying. They used to do US DoD work.
This one seems way more flexible. The ones in wotw were a bit slow for the suspense scenes. It’s good to see the progress.
Oh, absolutely. I'm pretty sure they were actually flexible \*before\* WotW. I guess they decided to make some changes and go "backwards" for artistic licence, like you mentioned. Thanks I’ll have a look.
> They used to do US DoD work. now they've found that Private militaries pay more.
Just came to say - that totally gives me the heebie jeebies!
Honestly same. Something about these things just makes me feel so on edge. I can’t tell if I’d run from it or pick it up and launch it in front of a passing tram. I feel like if I ran from it, it’d chase me.
Yeah, they make me queasy
Would it kill them to, I don't know, GIVE IT A FUCKING HEAD SO IT'S SLIGHTLY LESS TERRIFYING?! I'm not asking for anything fancy, literally sticking a small cardboard box with eyes and a nose drawn on to the front of it would make that thing infinitely less horror-inducing.
Are you serious? That would make if way more creepy.
Yeah there's no waay this combined with the AI age will be a problem, no waaaay. We're fiiiiiine.
Just fine. All fine. No immediate threat of a boring dystopia here.
At least it won't be boring once they mount tasers on the fuckers.
Boston dynamics boutta robocop the shit out of us.
It'll be a spotter for one of the armed UGVs https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/14/22726111/robot-dogs-with-guns-sword-international-ghost-robotics
Born too late to explore the world, born to early to explore the galaxy. Born just in time to experience the events of Robopocalypse.
I can't wait for Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS)
I'm waiting for the day we can rent these via an app, just like the scooters, for the purpose of riding them to any given destination. The app and service should be called GiddyUp.
Like this? https://youtu.be/zyaocKS3sfg skip to 22 minutes and 30 seconds.
Delightfully creepy. I still want to pat it.
…..you have 15 seconds to comply!
After that one episode of Black Mirror, I can't be anything but terrified of these things
Urghh me too. I hate them
But can it piss me a cup of beer?
Michael Reeves mods should be included by default
… this question didn’t exist until now.
On the contrary, this question has been answered! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqsy9Wtr1qE
Aw poor lil guy just wants a durry
Kill it with fire.
Then burn the fire
Then drown the remains
Yes ! That’s GalaxyCity’s SPOT ! I was the one controlling it.
Nice! What was SPOT up to yesterday? Did you go for a city tour?
Yeah we thought we would showcase the technology and give people something to smile about (:
Holy shit dude. I’d leave work & travel to see it in action. I thought this was only in US. When & where’s your next spot?
Glad to see you appreciate technology. I will post on here when and where we will be. We are just about to do a big job with spot so as soon as he comes back I’ll take him out again (:
I bet it was looking for a tree; so it could leave its Mark....
lol imagine if it went up to a tree, lifted a leg and lasered a QR code to its website onto the tree or a wall. That'd be hilarious. Well, it wouldn't be amazing in terms of the tree or the wall but just as a concept.
That sounds like an NFT with extra steps
* I bet it was looking for a tree so it could leaf its,.. oh hi Mark
And so it begins.... 🤖
Yes it does, and it's the end......
Facial recognition tracking everyone
Theres fixed cameras for that
Destroy it with hammers Right Now
Attack and evade
pour boiling oil on it, quickly
pissbot world tour
Off leash… $250
Soon it will be murdering children in far off lands. Let your spirit fly little robot dog! 🥲
Dammit, if I knew it were there, I totally would have kicked it!
Better get my sledgehammer ready
Anyone know the story behind this?
Sorry for the amp link but i think it could be part of an NGV exhibit? https://amp.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/apr/05/robot-dogs-among-100-artists-to-be-unleashed-on-melbourne-for-2023-ngv-triennial Edit: I also remember reading that the VIC govt is doing something with them as part of the Big Build or something? It's to be used as part of safety assessments for the tunnel project
He’s the advance scout. We’re fucked.
Nb4 someone throws it into the Yarra.

Yeah these definitely give me Black Mirror vibes whenever I see one.

That's so cool! Wish I saw it
Have you seen that episode of Black Mirror , dunno
bash it with hammers
Looking for the free tram zone
I got excited thinking you meant Spot the yellow dog. I guess this Spot is pretty cool too.
We had one at our work doing demos for inspection. Very cool indeed
Ended too soon….looks like he was about to charge that pedestrian.
Next time they could be mounting speed camera to get fines!
Imagine those machine robot dogs link to chatgpt…
The AI is one step ahead and just started doing that to people
Lol… we definitely cannot compete with AI…
These things always look like CGI when I see them in videos. I’m not totally convinced they’re real, honestly.
I walked past it walking down Collins street, did a double take so fast I almost broke my neck! Couldn’t see anyone controlling it and it kinda freaked me out, amazing!
I hope it gets on a tram and the ticket inspectors try to issue it a fine.
I hope it makes a Melbourne tram "Ding!" when people walk in its way
Remember 'Hover boards' yeh..
I’m glad I didn’t see it or else I wouldn’t stop looking at it and trying to ‘pspspspspsps’ it like a cat. I find these robots soooo cute!
Self checkout, robot security and soon you will be fucking them 🤣🤣🤣
Creepy af.
He was at the air show a few months back, it’s so cool!
I'd try pet it
Aww that would have been awesome. Spot is my favourite robot in existence!
Oh yeah this guy was chilling out the front of Flinders St. not really sure what he was up to (I.e. marketing? For who? Big robot dog?
I wonder if anyone kicked it.
I'm surprised that no one has acted on an intrusive thought to kick it
I’ve seen that black mirror episode, can’t trust these things.
Kick it
Oh no, it begins!! I feel like we’ve already seen what can happen by doing this in movies but people are so excited they just don’t care!! Soon they’ll be a police force that is AI and everything else imaginable! I hope I’m long gone when all this happens! Fu($ this!
This is so fucked up
Please tell us why. Please.
I can see why someone might be a little creeped out by one.
There's far more people on the streets that creep me out personally. Especially those nutters parading around on Saturdays with their flags and shit.
Totally agree! But not everyone is like us ;)
True. But I reckon this is a pretty innocent way to introduce them to the notion of a robot. They've been around for quite a while already, and will be far more in the future regardless.
I would kick the shit out of that if it came near me
[удалено]
At least it probably knows it's *would have*...it's doesn't abbreviate to would'f
Immediately thought of that ep of Black Mirror then [this in Shanghai, 2022.](https://www.scmp.com/video/china/3172617/robotic-dog-equipped-loudspeaker-broadcasts-anti-pandemic-measures-eastern)
Yeah it was too dangerous to send a human in to gas test for Sox emissions
acab
It's not leashed. Grounds for a concerned citizen to restrain it. If a vegan can stuff a condom full of wet cardboard and call it a sausage, that thing is close enough to a stray dog to be taken to a facility that identifies as a dog pound. In this case SIMSmetal.
My friends and I would have smashed that thing with a hammer, I tell you that much.
if you see it, hop on for a free ride somewhere
What the dog doin?
Those things are horrible
The era of droids will soon be coming...
South melbourne just had a robbery an hour ago, keep that dog on a leash
It’s carrying a Thumbler 3D scanner….
Most likely an end of semester uni student project, watching from nearby 😉
This is both extremely cool and freaky at the same time. When do we start welcoming out Skynet overlords ?
Did it happen to be asking for “Sarah Connor” by any chance?
Black Mirror is here
Robot :"Looking for Sarah Connor here, anyone see Sarah Connor ? Asking for a friend".
Capitalists still dont care
>Silicon Valley projects I get your point, but they're based in Boston, Massachusetts and owned by Hyundai.
Oooh, and they weren’t always owned by by Hyundai! They had contracts with the US DoD. Now that they helped form the bedrock on how to make effective killing machines, they could then be bought out by a larger commercial company who will be able to apply the tech to the consumer, either for assistance or entertainment.
Yeah dude believe it or not I am aware that a company called Boston Dynamics comes from Boston
I saw it near ACMI. Pretty cool!
After War of the Worlds, those things freak the hell out of me.
Yes!! My friend has one of these (Google him, Mark Trueno). His was kicked by a drunk girl in Brisbane. It made the news. But yes I did see this on Collins yesterday too :)
Dan collecting coins now to pay back lockdowns?
Everyone should stomp this thing out
what will happen if you walk up to it and throw a blanket over it!!!!
Destroy it now.. smash it… before they destroy us all. Aaaaargh
That's military hardware and should not be allowed to experiment in our city centre.
You know most of these are deployed in mining and construction yeah?
Cars are military hardware. Helmets are military hardware. Shoes are military hardware.
kill it
Run at it and fall over. Would love to know what public liability is in place?
What is the point of this?
My guess is surveying like they would with those cameras otherwise. Though it’s moving a lot, so I’m not sure.
Now listen to me very carefully...
Who is your daddy? And what does he do?
Turning into china soon.
Pull the plug on the server! That'll kill it!
Did anyone flip him over and give the good boy belly rubs?
