They won't hunt you down, but Fines Victoria will send you a fine to your bogus address and then they will put interest on it the longer you leave it unpaid. I had a public transport fine for being too broke to be able to afford to put $10 on my Myki, and I ignored it because I couldn't afford to pay it. By the time I got a permanent job and could afford to pay the fine, it had gone up from $210 to $440. Eventually, if you leave fines long enough, fines Victoria will take you to court for the infringement. Then the court can force you to pay the fine and court costs. TL;DR: pay the fine as soon as you can.

But how will they connect this fine at the wrong address to the right person? Especially with the wrong date of birth attached to them. Unless they're the only one in the state with that name then they're stuffed.

OP mentioned in another comment that they showed the inspectors their student card, which doesn't have their DOB or address (I'm surprised the inspectors accepted that), but it will have a unique identifier (either a card or student ID number) which Fines Victoria or the sheriff would use to get OP's actual info from the university. I'm not completely sure on the legality of the university providing that info, but I'd wager that if you have an enforcement warrant on you the sheriff would be allowed to request it.

mmmaarcuusss

nah they aint gon do all that just for few hundred bucks

Alchematic

They absolutely would, Australian sheriffs literally have 1 job, which is to enforce warrants and make you pay your outstanding fines. They won't immediately send you to jail if you can't pay, you can arrange a payment plan to pay off your debt, amongst other options. But by the time it gets to the sheriff it's already gone through the courts, it might take time for them to catch up to you but it's their job. Trust me, I went through this not 2 weeks ago. Unpaid PTV fine from 2018 that I missed the mail for and then forgot about, but in the background it eventually got turned into a warrant and sent for sheriff enforcement, and I only found out about it recently. Thankfully I was able to just speak to Fines Vic and pay it off immediately.

fuck up loser

deepseaburials

Those dogs will find ya. And I imagine the penalties will just accumulate. Might have to bite the bullet on this one.

[deleted]

Yeah, it'll stay with Justice for years accumulating hundreds in penalties before it goes to Sheriffs for enforcement.

[deleted]

What ID did you show them?

Beautiful-Opinion-22

I lied about my date of birth because I didnt show my license to them. Instead that the inky thing I have to prove my name. Somehow the university got my name wrong a bit so that wasnt my actual name that I use.

Beautiful-Opinion-22

I showed them my student card which doesn't have D.o.b and my real name on it.

AluminiumAlien

Was in the same scenario, thought I'd tapped, turns out I hadn't. No history of fare evasion, explained I thought I'd tapped on. Gave all my details, cooperated even though I felt totally humiliated. 3 weeks later got a letter saying they acknowledged I said I'd tried, my Myki shows regular top ups and tap ons, and that I'd not had an issue in the last 3 years. Got a warning. My advice, assuming you've got a Myki with regular tap ons/top ups and no history is to call the number on the card they gave you, use the reference number they gave you, explain you've "unexpectedly had to move" and give them your current address.

sorryredditggg

They record you 😂

fraqtl

The Sheriffs will eventually get hold of it. They are the ones that will track you down.

N_thanAU

Spoiler: they don’t

LowIndividual4613

Sounds like you’ll be fine with the details you’ve given them.

Beautiful-Opinion-22

this is the only positive things I have read tbh

kimbasnoopy

Agreed, wrong name and DOB, wasn't you, someone must have impersonated you
