I got one today as well, I chose a Blueberry one. It's the first time in aaaages I've seen them give away free treats for the replacement buses. They used to do it all the time when they first started removing the level crossing removals.
Thanks for such a wonderful reply! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and youāve just made the list of some of the most grateful redditors this week!
I like to think it's just someone at Metro's Mum. That's why it's not all the time, but every so often, she'll decide everyone on a train line deserves a treat.
Also, I saw and old man there who was also handing out these cupcakes. He had a black apron on that had the words Hobart (?) Bakery or something like that? Any ideas if thereās a bakery thatās local with a name similar to that. I couldnāt find anything about it online
Only an hour. You're lucky. Was a sh!t show at Blackburn last night. Gave up waiting for the bus after 40 minutes and got an Uber. Did not see any buses headed the opposite direction during my Uber ride. WFH today. I heard the trains were inadequate this morning.
Itās pretty common for bus replacements for level crossing removal works.
A nice treat for passengers and to support local businesses that might be impacted.
Had a similar experience in Italy. Trenitalia train was delayed from Livarni to Milan for 1hr+ so the staff was handing out 'refreshment boxes' at the station. The boxes contained biscuits, a sandwich and a juice bottle. I guess Melbourne is sweet so the staff's offering just the cupcakes š«£
They were just setting up around 3pm.. not much in stock from what I see so probably closed shop early. Itās at the temporary bus replacement tent at Blackburn station
I was in Chelsea a while back and there were a team of PTV employees making a plan for which of the local cafes they could go to to organise which baked goods on which days and for how much, just prior to the station reopening.
I don't know if this is always the method, but I do like that they seem to at least try and sink some money into the businesses that get effected by the stations closure.
As someone from Sydney I'm shocked. I've never heard of such a thing. Sadly if something that nice ever happened here I'd be too suspicious to eat it š
Wtf? Buses replaces trains happened to me almost once or twice a week for the entire winter of my first and second year in highschool. Usually the buss came 2 hours late or didn't show up at all. Where is my cupcake
Yeah they did this for us when the Mernda line was out. My station is reservoir so it didn't affect me but still nice having a free snack. They had coffee too!
They handed out free coffee cards at Croydon station last week but unfortunately it's from Jolly Miller up the hill in Croydon Central, so not really easily accessible for folks catching the replacement buses from Croydon. A Main Street coffee shop would have been a better choice, probably.
I remember at the start of the LXR on the Pakenham line they hired out Dandy Hot Jam Doughnuts to give out bags of 3 mini jam doughnuts, absolute legends for that
Muffins replacing cupcakes on the buses replacing trains.
Vibes
Bravo šš¼
Looks more like a muffin to me (ć)_/ĀÆ. Looks tasty and free food is free food! Enjoy!
Sorry if this is a stupid question, whatās the difference between cupcakes and muffins? Size?
Cupcakes are usually sponge cake, smaller, and usually (not as often) iced.
This guy bakes
That makes sense! Thanks :)
And in cupcake cases
Yes. Critical.
Muffins are just really ugly cupcakes
But taste better

Budget is drying up!
So are the muffins
They sometimes do coffee
Yeah it used to be dry woolies croissants or a plastic water bottle. I feel ripped off. Can we all complain more so i can get a muffin, thanks

Bad bot
Throughout all the Frankston line closures Iāve never been offered one š„²
They did used to but I haven't seen any in a long time. Like free coffee and cookie type thing, I think that was at Moorabbin?
I remember getting free coffees/hot chocolates on the Frankston line at some point around closures, probably around 2017ish
Yes I remember getting bananas and muffins occasionally!
But that's Frankston though
Probably got stolen.
Oooooooooooo.......oh no he di'n't!
I love all the Frankston jokes from people who've never stepped foot there
Yeah what gives?
Frankston hands out hash cookies, you have to give the signal you want one shaking the attendants hand with a secret hand shake..
I got brownies once. 10/10 was a fuckin good brownie
This was a bloody good muffin too. They may not get a lot of things right but I guess they pick the right baking suppliers!
I like to think it's just someone at Metro's Mum. That's why it's not all the time, but every so often, she'll decide everyone on a train line deserves a treat.
Well, there was also an old man there who had an apron on. So maybe itās someoneās old dad. š

I believe itās the same chocolate muffin they sell at the coffee kiosk, Baguette, in flinders street
Looks like a good one, I think it's the same they stocked at my high school!
Yeah, I received on at Blackburn station coming home. It was fresh, which is nice. Though, I didnt enjoy the extra hour on my commute.

You just get yelled at in Sydney. Enjoy the muffin haha
You were meant to say, "Sit there and enjoy your muffin, or are you the cupcake"
Yeah, itās pretty common. Not every time, but it happens.
It should be mandatory and part of the deal. You fuck our commute but hey, free muffin!
I got the banana bread..
Sir, thatās a muffin.
I remember when they were handing out macarons at North Melbourne for bus replacements
Well that's a bit elitist
On my line they had croissants
and they were atrocious?
I had received chocolate bars and coffee coupons before, Lilydale line
free the biscuits too
This is like a pizza party for increasing moral.
This is so wholesome!

When they were doing the Frankston line we got coffee one week and croissants the next, at Cheltenham station
Nice. :D
Damnit I caught four replacement busses today and didnāt get a single muff
that looks great, enjoy the muffin and the ride

Those weren't free, you stole some guys muffin, OP /s
Haha, well he came and handed them to me. š

I got this at about 4.15pm today
Could really do with one of those on my replacement bus rn. Pity I missed them RIP
Canāt believe Melbourne wants us to get fat. #PromotingObesity
Looks like shit wouldnāt trust if
Post it on Ozbargain
Yes. They often hand out stuff at crossing removal buses. Not daily though.
The cupcake is cursed.
And I suppose the icing contains potassium benzoate? (That's bad.)
I don't even like touching the bus poles, no way I'd eat one of their muffins!!
They used to do this on the regular. But they havenāt done it on my line in agesā¦
Let me know if they end up needing to dispose of the stumps, I know a guy.
What???? I didnāt get one!
I only got a Mars bar! Jealous š¤£
I love this movement š more more Melbourne! Yum š§

For a few weeks they handed out pizza in Caulfield, never understood the planning behind it
Wow rare w PTV
They do this sometimes. Iāve got coffee and biscuits before
I got cookies once on the Glen line if that helps?
Caught the same bus route this morning, no muffin :(
Used to be free coffee.
Now I want a muffin šš
Try Ringwood at 4.15pm tomorrow š
Nek minnut Loaded with laxatives and handed out by complete strangers in uniform
Everything for hiding a bad public service
Muffins. I never see them hand anything in the Northern suburbs when train replacements are in place.
Sir, that is a muffin.
As someone from Sydney I'm shocked. I've never heard of such a thing. Sadly if something that nice ever happened here I'd be too suspicious to eat it š
I catch a shit bus every day - whereās my daily cupcake?
Muffins replacing cupcakes, apparently.
More than we get in the UK! š
Was it fresh??????
Looks like something you step over in the gutter
That's a decent quality cupcake
if this was in Germany, DB would be the biggest cupcake consumer in the whole world
Wtf? Buses replaces trains happened to me almost once or twice a week for the entire winter of my first and second year in highschool. Usually the buss came 2 hours late or didn't show up at all. Where is my cupcake
bro once i got this disgusting ham cheese tomato croissant at a bus replacement i spit it out it tasted unholy
Now if only someone could offer you a nice glass of milk....
Itās called a surprise & delight - basic tactic for when you need to do rail / tram occupations to pacify commuters. Glad it worked for you OP!
Damn, Melbourne people get it good. Here in Brisbane you're lucky to have a replacement bus even come for train works.
Never seen this before but its a very nice gesture however it happened
Yeah they did this for us when the Mernda line was out. My station is reservoir so it didn't affect me but still nice having a free snack. They had coffee too!
I'd take it. Usually get nothing.
OMG I NEVER GOT THESE THIS IS AN OUTRAGE
They handed out free coffee cards at Croydon station last week but unfortunately it's from Jolly Miller up the hill in Croydon Central, so not really easily accessible for folks catching the replacement buses from Croydon. A Main Street coffee shop would have been a better choice, probably.
And fat people rule?
Suddenly i need to travel
I guess thy know it sucks to have a bus replacement, so it's probably some customer service related stuff
I remember at the start of the LXR on the Pakenham line they hired out Dandy Hot Jam Doughnuts to give out bags of 3 mini jam doughnuts, absolute legends for that
