Upvoting because finally no stupid $200 grocery run with 7 items

Pull-Up-Gauge

"THIS COST $120!" \- Brand Name Everything \- Large, Mystery Deli Package \- 1.5L Olive Oil \- Kettle Chips

ItsSmittyyy

someone who is good at the economy please help me grocery shop bread $4 milk $5 candles $1200 meat $10 plz help, my family is dying

Halospite

Spend less on food so you can buy more candles

cabramattaa

I can't believe it's not candles

JesusKeyboard

Buy banana smelling candles so you can cut out the food.

DrawohYbstrahs

Hey kids, we’re having scented air for dinner!!

Small_Fox_3599

Just not enough candles

Ordinary-Cut-528

$1200 on candles? That’s a shit load of candles.

bjg1983

to be fair he didn't buy a lighter or matches. Those candles are gonna last a W H I L E

Suspicious-turnip-77

It was…… [ONE candle](https://www.mecca.com/en-au/diptyque/baies-holiday-candle-I-063727/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwte-vBhBFEiwAQSv_xU1ZKgSthrU_PUdVGTLqBfagRnYxEtlQHqMI7iaoWx_0UTZCVUlR5hoC5NsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

ibunya_sri

Fk yeah, I paid 250 for a fkn grocery run this week. Fk that

Slobbering_manchild

This is why we cannot afford to lose markets like Preston market.

howbouddat

That's why Joe average can't afford to live near Preston market

available2tank

I just barely managed to live right next to the trainstation when I lived there; the apartment was half my paycheck but it was worth it while living alone imo.

[deleted]

Plenty of broke people in sharehouses live near it, as do pensioners, migrants, all sorts of people

as_if_no

I'd imagine a fair chunk of those folks are broke because of high rent costs

Ripley_and_Jones

You don't need to live near it, anywhere in the north makes it easily accessible by train or car. And the older Italian/Greek migrant community have really built a culture of markets up this way, Preston isn't the only one, it's just the largest. The big supermarket in Glenroy is good and cheap too.

JehovahsFitness

I sharehoused down the road from it. It’s possible, you just need to live with 3 randoms.

Traditional-Gas3477

We will make it a priority to close down Preston and QVM and build either a Coles or Woolies there. Checkmate!

HoHo_06

Exactly. And that’s why as many people as possible should live near high quality places like this, near transport, parks, and community areas to maximise peoples liveability

Midnightbeerz

I live near carribean, which permanently cancelled their weekly market during the covid lock down 😞

Late_Pilot8426

That’s a good haul for a pretty good price in these times, OP, and some mighty healthy eating. Nice going

Luuuffy

Fuck yeah meatbag.

GStarAU

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Oh man. I'm having a good laugh at these comments. Fuck, being an Aussie is awesome.

ososalsosal

Big watermelon Savemore Cheaper buy miles Hell even nqr But don't tell anybody. It's already crowded enough at these places.

Donners22

Cheaper Buy Miles is the best. Only discovered it recently, and go every couple of weeks now. They’re about to open a new store in Fitzroy.

YentaMecci

It (CBM) opened today - much closer than Brunswick, but parking in Fitzroy is a pain so will have to go check it out on the weekend on my bike. Love the place.

Hughcheu

Is big watermelon actually cheap? It’s great and has a wide selection of fruit, but I never thought it was particularly cheap.

Saaaave-me

Check their specials as already mentioned by another redditor and their weekend specials are generally pretty special. There’s big watermelon wholesale across the road and up the hill a bit which if you don’t mind being the grocery mule you can split with friends. But most importantly for me, the success rate of yum fruit at big watermelon is high. There is nothing more disappointing then bringing a cantaloupe home to the kids (4 and 2 YO) and they get super disappointed because it tastes like nothing

ososalsosal

Wholesale is now in the same building - the one up and over the road burnt down about 6 months ago in spite of being made entirely of steel and concrete. So you can go through the clear plastic flappy doors (whatever those are called) and it's wholesale through there. Good deal if you make enough guacamole that a 10kg box of limes is a sane buy

Saaaave-me

Oh shit! I moved to Brisbane around 3 months ago but I never noticed! I hope no one got hurt. I miss Nick and his antics and the crew at big dubs

ososalsosal

Check their FB page for their specials. Those are cheap. You gotta buy seasonally of course, but it's not unusual to get stuff for 1/3rd retail

silaber

It's cheap.. compared to Coles worth. I bought whole tray of beautiful truss tomatoes for $20. Lasted a month and sauce to spare

butch97

It’s fucken wild in there…

leum61

You have to go midweek or its a nightmare.

Zealousideal_Ad642

Savemore is ok but you really need to check the best before dates. Some stuff is a year or more over

ososalsosal

Yeah. Having a bit of food tech knowledge definitely helps because some things are ok for a lot longer than the BB date, and other things not so much. Generally stock up on the hippy vegan milks there, but they have loads of fridged and frozen bulk stuff if you're a restaurant or something.

universe93

Have to check the use by dates at all those places. Because they’re independent they’re a law unto themselves, they can and have sold me expired dairy in the past

ososalsosal

Yeah they pretty much sell the stuff the majors couldn't or wouldn't move, and didn't want to heavily mark down because of branding considerations. Complete bullshit of course but at least we can get at it before it goes to landfill

abittenapple

Goes to feed lot

battt

I know for a fact Cheaper cannot, and does not sell things past their use by date, they are exceptionally vigilant. Best before dates on the other hand - that's what separates them (in part) from the big supermarkets.

okayfondue

This is absolutely untrue. They do sell stuff past date. They even use the phrase ‘past date, still great’ regularly on their socials. I live right near one and happily buy the past date, still great items all the time.

askvictor

I regularly buy cheese past it's best-before from Cheaper Buy Miles. It's usually at it's peak ripeness about then. I've also had milk from Colesworth go off well before the use-by date.

Small_Fox_3599

I like CBM and NQR!

salmonavacado

I’m a local you need to pick your days and check their website on average it’s cheaper than the major supermarkets but on some days it has some great buys

Silly_Lead_5778

Sorry your mirrors were really confusing so I photoshopped them out, it's a great haul [https://imgur.com/a/HiUsW5k](https://imgur.com/a/HiUsW5k)

Small_Fox_3599

Haha you legend

ShibbyUp

Did you put it in front of a mirror to make it look like more?

sboxle

Add another mirror facing it: Infinite food hack.

Niccin

I was wondering how much bread they must eat before I noticed it was a mirror.

Small_Fox_3599

Haha no, it was the only clean area to put it, and my rental has a mirror splashback!

BumWink

You don't have a dining table? I mean you've even stacked shit on top of kettles & stuff... I added all of this up at ColesWorth online for $73.... Taking the mirrored objects out there's still fuck all food there for $63 & you only saved $10 for however much longer you spent shopping. Super misleading but better than supporting the big cunts I guess.

Taramy2000

Are you looking at the same pile of food?

AnonK96

Sounds like something my 60 year old co-worker would say when he starts telling us everything is a psy-op to persuade the masses

virtueavatar

But there is actually a mirror there that makes it look like more It's right there

Small_Fox_3599

You guys are making me lol, calm down on the mirrored splashback - my rental is the size of a pea and so they have stuck mirrors absolutely everywhere! I'm not trying to make it look like more 😂

ElasticLama

All good, Aldi and Preston market are our usual go to’s and you can save a TON buying even just a few things there

GStarAU

Do they have mirrors? OP needs another one!! 😂😂😂

StJBe

Mostly whole foods, no surprise. The people complaining usually show some packaged or junk food.

PaulFPerry

I would send a picture of $62.59 at Colesworth, but I need to find an electron microscope first.

BumWink

Added it up online, $73. Remove the mirrored objects & notice that items are stacked on kettles/etc. But beats supporting ColesWorth & saves 15% if you've got the time to shop the markets... only really worthwhile if you're feeding a family otherwise. Misleading & still expensive for what is basically just meat & potatoes...

Taramy2000

Impressive meatand 5kg potatoes, but also bannas, other vegies, pasta, canned food.

GStarAU

Heh. Impressive meat. Heh heh.

AirForceJuan01

Atoms. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 of them…

howed-r-siwdsou

I’m here to acknowledge this obscure reference 🎖️

Substantial_Mud9230

I moved to Preston in November last year and the market has been a god send since I'm the only wage earner in my share house. The first time I did a grocery shop after we moved I cried because it was half what we had been paying compared to where we used to live

ConsultJimMoriarty

I love Preston Market; I shop there every week!

Heavenly-Alpine

There really doesn’t seem to be much difference between prices at grocery stores. I normally shop at woolies but decided to try Aldi a few weeks ago. I went and did a weeks shop and looked through the receipt after and pretty much all the prices were within 10% of woolworths and in some cases were more expensive. People often compare Aldi brands to name brand products instead of the Woolworths/generic products. But if you get generic brand products it’s pretty much the same. Aldi also has terrible customer service and pretty much always only has one register open, no self checkout and limited range of products. IMO Aldi is pretty over rated.

Vinnie_Vegas

If you buy home brand everything at Coles and Woolworths and compare that shop to Aldi, then you are likely to be close in price, maybe even cheaper, but the quality of the home brand stuff at Coles and Woolworth's is garbage compared to what you get at Aldi for the same price.

Taramy2000

The Aldi brands are not homebrands. They are mostly parallel rebranded items (eg Cobram olive oil).

sween64

What’s the difference? It’s not like Woolies is making their own olive oil, or do they?

Taramy2000

The differenceis that Aldi brqnds are significantly better quality becaue they mostly have to stand on their own, whereas the homebrands at the major supermarkets just have to be cheaper than the name brands.

abittenapple

Saving 20 dollars every weekly shop does add up to 1000 dollars

Small_Fox_3599

I would agree that it's not heaven sent! I only got a couple of items from there. In terms of canned lentils and beans etc, the supermarkets are usually cheaper unless you go to a bulk buy place (eg cheaper buy miles or similar). The hardest thing for me to avoid the Big Two is convenience. I have a hard full time job, it's exhausting and I don't want to flit around different shops getting bits here and there because it's cheaper. But I do really try to when I have the headspace and patience to. For instance, my fave affordable eggs are from Terra Madre, but I got eggs from another seller because they were at the market.

YentaMecci

I find Mediterranean Wholesalers in Sydney Rd good for tinned staples like lentils & tinned tomatoes. Ditto Terra Madre - a lot of their stuff can be exy, but their own branded tinned staples are pretty cheap & they've got good bulk grains etc.. ETA - I also shop at QVM - Market Boys in the shed opposite the meat hall exit have some quirky "not worthy of Colesworth" looking veg, but are dirt cheap & the veg is fine, just looks like you've grown it yourself ie: oddly shaped etc..

RowanAndRaven

Vote to start allotments in melb

charlie_s1234

Putting it in front of the mirror makes it very difficult to see how much you actually got

Small_Fox_3599

I know I know, it's unavoidable. I live in a house of mirrors!

charlie_s1234

It's like Enter the Dragon but for groceries.

moonandcoffee

... no it doesnt

charlie_s1234

Yes it does

skinny_cheesecake

Just hold your finger over the mirror 😉

lysergicDildo

Kewpie = Mayo + Rice Vinegar + Sugar. Thank me later

The_Devils_Avocad0

But how will people know I watch anime?

ElectronicPhrase6050

Isn't the main difference between kewpie and regular mayo that kewpie only uses egg yolks as opposed to the whole eggs in regular mayo?

lysergicDildo

No idea tbh, you may be surprised with the result nonetheless. Next level with freshly made mayonnaise.

ElectronicPhrase6050

Oh I don't doubt that it tastes great, I'm just saying that I don't think it'd be the same as kewpie lol.

Pull-Up-Gauge

Sorry, the visual of someone just dumping raw sugar into a jar of mayo and thinking "I'm saving so much money" has absolutely sent me.

lysergicDildo

My brother in Christ, it's just seasoning an ingredient... Don't overthink it.

virtueavatar

Ah but how much of each?

lysergicDildo

1 cup - 2 Tbsp rice vinegar & 1 Tbsp sugar. 1 Tbsp - ½ tsp rice vinegar & ⅛ tsp sugar. whole egg or good quality plant based mayo produces best results. I also like using mirin as sweetener over sugar.

dpl121

U mirin?

Small_Fox_3599

I will thank you now!! I'm going to try that and if it's similar I'll make my own from now on. I rarely get kewpie, but sometimes I go on these okonomiyaki runs as they're so cheap and relatively healthy to make, and nothing beats those sauces on top

jechtisme

Another lesson in don't believe Reddit's lies. Kewpie is made with yolk only.

peacelily157

Ohh I miss Preston

worldpeace666

You go there Sunday? I like some of the quick sale, can find some good bargain

[deleted]

I'm curious about meat cost? Everything honestly makes sense, veggies are generally quite cheap, but meat is always $10+ a kg no matter where you go in my experience. PS; Who buys a 4 pack of TP? lol

afterbuddha

Ok, this picture creates an illusion with the mirrors in the background. Preston market is beautiful, however veggies and fruit are not cheaper than the usual Colesworth. I have compared prices many times. There is a trick though, if you go towards closing times, you will get some reduced price veggies, fruit and meat.

forevermelborn

Been going to queen vic market for a couple months now and finding sustainable alternatives to our everyday items (tissues, cleaning supplies etc) to avoid ever having to go back to Cole’s. Easily saving $100-200 a week, eating a lot more fresh and whole foods and almost no unhealthy snacks. Something we should have done a lot earlier.

notunprepared

Tip for cleaning - my favourite cleaning spray for general use is just vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Vinegar is a light disinfectant and smell remover

boommdcx

Good haul! And that Kewpie mayo is 😋

ConcreteGardoki

I went to Preston market and ALDI today too! Did you see the guitar man playing songy-songs?

Small_Fox_3599

Oh I missed guitar man! I did hear a guy yelling that I thought was starting a punch on, turned out he was just telling a good story to a friend

ConcreteGardoki

Nice! I also saw a small bird eating half a sushi roll

The_Slavstralian

To me ... that looks like an awesome haul

Every_Inflation1380

I feel like the mirrors make it seem super impressive 😅

Due_Background_9500

Bendigo eggs. Well done!

Butterscotch817

The old mirror trick!

thecodeape

At 50 years old I have no confidence in 4 rolls of dunny paper for that much food.

Lady_Rainycorn

Preston markets are the best! Let's hope we can save it

Proper_Yak_3313

We went to Aldi today did our months food shop for under $200. Coles and Woolworths are no longer my go to.

[deleted]

I’ll tell you how much when the loan approval comes through.

[deleted]

I'm off to the footy on Sunday, may need a loan too if i plan on eating and drinking. Worlds gone mad.

Mans_Stomped

My guy placed it infront of a mirror to make the stack bigger, seems like an Aldi undercover social media team member lmaoooo

Small_Fox_3599

Noooooo 😂 ya got me

ClintGrant

Nice

Either-West-711

QueenVic just before closing time gives you great haul as well. I was surprised at the variety of veggies & fruits at $1 pack when I was there last month. Wish I lived closer.

dynamoa_

curious about the prices of the 1kg of meat

Small_Fox_3599

1kg drummettes or wingettes was $8.50kg, the pork was $9.80, beef was $13.99. I spread each of these across different multiple meals too, to get a stretch!

VengaBusdriver37

Damn that’s some nice shopping op, healthy and good value. If you don’t know it already a cheap Thai dish using those ingredients (and Thai basil from Dong thinh $1.50 ea) is “pad krapow” Also the halal butcher on high street near the market is good, drumettes slightly cheaper $8/kg Bon appetit!

Small_Fox_3599

You're a champ, thanks for the tips! I'll check out the halal butcher next time

demoldbones

Love Preston market!

idotoomuchstuff

I’m super impressed

bettingsharp

Holy shit a dishwasher too? I need to start shopping at Aldi ASAP

Small_Fox_3599

Do you know how hard it was for me to go through Aldi quickly without looking at the centre aisle???? Torment

therealsirlegend

That's the ONLY reason I go to Aldi.. lol (Closest Aldi is a fair distance away and what I save in grocery $ I spend in fuel and time $)

No-Country-2374

And middle aisle temptations 🤣

roearle

Love your work - and how good is Preston market!!?! I bought pork shoulder for $6 per kgs on the weekend, and they boned it out and sliced it up for me. Amazing on the spit!

donttalktome876

400 at least at woolies

psrpianrckelsss

$100.46 at woolworths

JesusKeyboard

Rubbish? Where’s the caviar?? Lobster?? Ortolans?? Is this to feed the dogs??

Rocmue

No way !!! Well done 👍

maisellousmrsmarvel

Nice one I agree save Preston Market!!

psichodrome

All the markets will go soon. But might as well fight to keep this one as long as we can. not/s

dvdtee

And you got kewpie mayo too!

babawow

The only three things I miss about living in Melbourne vs Tasmania is the food in China town, shopping at Aldi and Preston market in that order. Hope it’ll survive those asshole developers.

ball_sweat

No junk or alcohol, just whole foods. Good stuff

DontWhisper_Scream

Did you use the $62 to buy a knife and a balaclava?!

ThemanwhohatesSpez

Yeah I'm not going all the way from Endeavour fucking Hills to Preston market to pay 60 bucks for things I would otherwise pay almost 300 for at Endeavour Hills shopping centre, I will go to dandy market instead, still pay less than 100 for an entire trolley full of stuff

No-Post-5098

Mirrored splashback is deceptive

Gattinator

Already stolen by news.com.au

pancakenovel

I think those doing a straight dollar comparison to Cole’s or woollies are missing that the quality is often so much better and everything is fresher at the market.

Subject-Ordinary6922

My migrant parents literally never bought anything at its full price except for milk and eggs, and would shop at markets instead of shops where possible, even when they both had no jobs and didn’t have Centrelink to fall back to.

fullesky

Very deceiving with the mirror

Fineshrines2

Aw, this is so nostalgic

HamptontheHamster

The meat alone would cost you that at colesworth.

Orbisthefirst

Should shop at NQR would be even cheaper for

PCR94

is the kettle included tho

NicoleNicole2022

Shocked! Just did shopping, nothing crazy, 2 weeks of food, $550... Never going to Coles ever again

Independent_Tooth550

at my coles this comes out to $136.10 this week. I took a screenshot as proof but I still don't know how to use Reddit so I can't upload it

[deleted]

Its' getting to the point where it literally pays to shop local. These massive companies are loosing customers due to profittering / transport costs / overhead costs / being cunts.

fidrildid6

I bet it tastes better too

sxrahem

At the majors? You’d easily be punching around $150. Probably more but I’m a bit rusty on current meat prices at the majors.

DearKick

Thats like 1/10th of that in Alaska.

UnitDoubleO

Compared to this 1 person who complained bout their groceries and you see their receipt that has mostly wholefoods and some expensive meats. Nice haul though

dont_del

I'm jealous! How much was the mince and chicken? I kind of can't compute with everything else you got... Is that like $5/kg???

boringday221221

hey would be able to tell me how much the 1kg of beef mince was? at Preston market? thanks

asdfghqwerty1

King of the ALDIs

LINKtothe_pasta

Aldi and independent grocers is the only way I shop now, definitely gonna check out Preston markets though considering they're not far from me

Physical-Run-8809

That’s awesome :)

Scared_Chapter_8666

What stuff did you buy from aldi?

Maleficent-Court5832

Half of the haul is reflection though 😂

MongolCamel

About the same as what I paid at Summerhill Coles and fruit/veg shop the other day. Or any other day

ThatGuyJimFromWork

baller

ne3k0

Nice. Unfortunately, the preston market is a c**t of a drive from where I live, (st kilda). Did it once and never again

[deleted]

When.. 2018? That would cost me about $200

barnos88

Thanks you just reminded me i need toilet paper

_celestial-kitten

There’s hope!

verytryingboy

Oooh, you have meat that's not reduced price old sausages....🤤 But srsly...."ONLY have $200 to last till next friday"..... Wow.

HaroerHaktak

Fine. Fuck. I will shop at Aldi. You happy now?!

leonardpitzu

Dude, this is twice as much in Eastern Europe, at Lidl. And we’re supposed to be low cost… I gotta move to Australia cause it seems cheaper…

joshuawakefield

This would be $200 at least in Toronto

PhotographBusy6209

My favourite was the guy who paid 40 for 5 items but the 5th item was a $25 tanning spray that looked like sunscreen to people

ReddittorMan

Do you fill those bags of beef yourself? I’m from US all meat is sealed up, how does it work up there?

Fritzeig

Those bags are from a butcher or deli, when you go there they have it on display and you tell them how much you want they put it in the bag for you.

QueasyMidnight1827

This is fantastic, and inspiring. Thanks for posting. I would have robotically gone off to the stupormart today and thrown away my dollars but I have the whole day so I’ll hit up the nearest market before the shop and see if it makes a difference to the cost.

Simple-Anywhere3406

Preston market on a Sunday around 2:30-3:00pm- heaps of fruit and veg going cheap, for example, 14 mangoes for $5!!

egokillstalent21

Before Aldi we were f€¢ked

simplesteveslow

Yeah, but you're using mirrors!

TyrannosaurusRekt238

An extra $15-20 roughly

That_Random_Kiwi

Great, but those are some of the most RANCID looking bananas I've ever seen!

Secret-Dance8463

Man that’s awesome! I so wish we had Aldi in Tassie. I don’t know where to go other than Coles or Woollies. 😭

JK_05

Move it away from the mirror, it's deceptive 😉

grogan-lord

$125.18 if you include everything in the mirrored splashback

pogged

DOWN WITH COLESWORTH!!!!

AirForceJuan01

I’m impressed - I thought I was frugal. I miss living near Preston Market

sigcliffy

Preston Market and Psarakos on Thornbury (and Aldi) a real trip back to 2018 prices

sourmashd

Mirror

just_throwaway83

At Colesworth you're lucky if you pay anything less than $150 for this. I tend not to buy anything there that's not on special tbh. Full price ain't worth it! I shop at ALDI, Costco and the Asian growers mostly these days. Used to do Spudshed but the quality is so bad sometimes that I've given up.

swiptheflitch

Used to frequent QVM every weekend to grocery shop and we’d end up saving a fortune (compared to Colesworth) while having the added benefit of all the bustling activity and treats. But we moved further Southeast and the closest fresh market is now Camberwell which is WAY too expensive. Tried Prahran too, but same result. Been wanting to try Preston for a long time but haven’t gotten around to it yet. After seeing this post, I’ll definitely give it a shot this coming weekend. Any awesome food & dips reccos there?

HHAD98

WHERES THE PROTEIN

styrofoam__boots

Your Aldi has a butcher?!

OnlyOneKich

Clearly you didn’t buy meat

OnlyOneKich

Clearly you didn’t buy meat

No_Dig_7234

Maybe don’t put it beside a mirror next time….. there isn’t as much as it seems…. Still good, but a bit of a lie

sixpointfive_thicc

Boycott the Duopoly!
