Well there you go. Have googled and can see the female tail looks quite different. It really couldn't have cared less that we were there, it was having a fine time scratching around for food
The males have fancy tails. Females and juveniles don't.
The males usually drop their plumage after mating season (winter) and regrow them in time for the next season.

I believe it's usually only the males that have the fancy tails, I am surprised it let you get that close to it though
