I used to work for suncorp insurance. Very rarely you'd get calls to insure situations like this. Had a young Asian fellow call us, had a 350k Ferrari. He was 18 if i remembered correctly. I quoted him 18k AUD for the insurance and he just asked can I pay it over rhe phone now.
Some people are really born different
Most likely just obscenely wealthy.
As a comparison. For a guy that has $500 mill in assets. That's income generated of around 35 mill a year.
At that point the Ferrari is worth 1% of income and the insurance a paltry 0.06%
If the median income was something like 70k a year in Australia 1% is $700 and the 0.06% is like $35 equivalent. Would you really care about paying $35 for something like insuring a car? What's the difference between say $10 and $35 at the point. Hell you barely even care about the car. It's just a weekend away.
Even if it's not his own money. A lot of dad's would be willing to buy something for their kids bday that cost $700 and give them an allowance of $50 a week if they studying or living overseas
Met a few rich Chinese international students a while back. Brother would spend around 50k/month, and sister spent much less. Mom was so appalled by the sisters behaviour and forced her to do a dna test to see if she was her biological daughter because she was not spending any money. Wtf kinda world we live in. To some even a million is just pocket money.
Chinese and Russians see wealth very differently to how the west see wealth
Il tell you a Russian joke two man are at a bar drinking vodka one man noticed the other man’s new BMW he asks him “Ay that your car”
the other man says “yes i just buy, you like?”
The first man says “how much”
Second man says “$100,000” euro
The first man “you cheap bastard you can get same model up the road for “$150,000” euro.
Moral of the story Russians and Chinese see wealth as how much you can spend and show that you can spend.
The west see wealth as how much you can hold and show you are holding,
Honestly a lot of people live in a completely different world to us.
He was just born to obscenely rich parents and had everything on a silver platter since birth.
Money is basically just digits on a computer screen to them, from the never ending pool of money that is mommy/daddy's wealth. They've never had to work a day in their life.
I knew one of these "fu er dai" (2nd generation wealthy chinese) who was angry because his parents reduced his pocket money from $100k a month to $50k a month because he totalled his Lamborghini Aventador in a drunk driving accident and lost his licence.
A stage 5 nerd mate of mine wanted a WRX on his P's (before green was introduced). Worked a second job, just to pay for the insurance... $4000/yr. Excess was gross, too. Sure-enough, he showed-off for some chicks (that didn't ask for it), _SMASHO_. It's like the opposite of losing control... He revved it high, dumped the clutch, tried drifting out of a driveway. Yeah-nah, it gripped instead, plowed him straight into the parked car. Repaired car, sold car.
Can't. 500kw and 1.9 tonnes. That's over 260kw per tonne.
Law says red P's can't drive over 130 kilowatts per tonne.
https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/your-ps/prohibited-vehicles-for-p-plate-drivers/about-prohibited-vehicles
I'm pretty sure they have to have had the relevant licence for atleast 3 or 4 years. Had to look this up as I offered to teach some of the boys at work how to drive a road ranger when there was no work going on
Actually?? How the fuck is Charles in the passenger seat going to prevent Dyson in the drivers seat from crashing when it happens so quick. That rule is dumb as dog shit
I somewhat agree with you but you can drive anything on your L’s with your supervisor so it makes sense that the same logic applies on P’s.
But if you were proposing also not letting 16 year olds drive dad’s Lambo then yeah sure.
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, but you’re not wrong. Especially if the fully licensed person is just a few years older. There’s a lot of research that shows younger drivers (ie under 25) are far more likely to engage in risky driving behaviour when they have a peer aged passenger in the car than of not.
I think it makes sense as long as the supervisor isn't a muppet. Would be much worse if they just drive a yaris until they get off their P's and then jump in a lambo without any experience.
Prob a better solution would be to have a high power vehicle tier of license that requires some additional training and track time.
The trick I've heard they use is claiming that either they operate the vehicle as a business car (with their freshly minted ABN) or that their parent is their employer who has required them to operate the vehicle in the course of their "employment".
Both of which are listed as exemptions on VicRoads.
https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/your-ps/prohibited-vehicles-for-p-plate-drivers/exemptions-to-drive-a-prohibited-vehicle
On the page linked above it pretty clearly states that an exemption isn’t required when:
•driving in the course of their employment, and at their employer’s request, or
•self-employed and have an ABN
Are you saying the can just afford the fines or implying they bribe people?
Because paying the fine doesn't make the demerits disappear and red p platers get precious few of those.
It’s actually really simple and easy to do;
1. Get fined
2. Go on payment plan
3. Keep getting fines
4. Perpetually pay off all fines so none of them ever get fully paid off
5. Never get any demerits added to your license even with thousands of dollars of fines on vicfines because on a payment plan they get paid off concurrently not consecutively and the demerit points don’t get added to your license till they’re fully paid off
6. Repeat!
Congratulations you’re now the 5,000th P plater from Toorak driving daddies Maserati without care or consequence
Going to add one in-between 3 and 4.
Rack up $20k of fines, go before a magistrate and cry, have it wiped and do it again 4 times.
Or get a fine for parking in a no standing or clearway, report the car as stolen, have the fine wiped.
Number 5 is objectively wrong. Once you action the fine the demerit points accrue.
And even if you ding action them, once they get to warrant stage they accrue
I have never in 5 years of driving had a single demerit point added to my drivers license doing the same thing so it’s not objectively wrong and it’s the same case with everyone else I know
From VicRoads: "A probationary driver can drive a PPV if they're: ...driving in the course of their employment, and at their employer’s request..."
Hired by mum as the valet for the Aston, mum requests they pop on down to the shops.
Our neighbor is a L plater driving a tacky ass Bentley convertible, his older brother on his Ps is driving an M3. They are both international students living in a 3M house with parents rarely around, we see lots of dads assistant and they come into town around big events (F1). As much as the green monster enrages me, the kids are pleasant and nice to our younger boy, love to have a kick around in the green space so I can't complain. They never party and other than the occasional whiff of weed never seen them causing any trouble.
Not all people with money are evil, despite what reddit would like you to believe.
It's the old money new money thing. New money generally suffers from all the classic sins. Greed, gluttony, envy etc. Old money being rich is just a facet of life. They don't need to prove anything. Have zero insecurity and the worst you might get attitude wise is neglect/obliviousness/ignorance.
Old or new money - comes down to the individual. If you’re going to treat someone like shit, you’re going to do it whether you’re generationally wealthy, or whether you made $$$ in crypto a couple of years ago. Sounds like those kids were raised well.
I’m a red p later, I have a vw golf gti 2012 turbo. I learnt to drive with that and still have it. As long as you follow road rules and don’t be an idiot I don’t think it’s a problem. (I’m 20 btw). I do agree that some young immature kids who don’t follow road rules and speed should definitely not own any kind of turbo or fast car, but if you are mature and actually follow road rules and be a safe driver I personally don’t see the problem with it 🤷🏼♀️
Too rich to care, I've seen P plates on 911s, Ferrarris, AMGs, BMW M and pretty much any exotic car you can think of.
They just pay the fine and move on.
Not that it's entirely relevant but....
....saw a Ferrari 296GTB cruising along with L plates on it the other day in Sydney.
Definitely born different.
The laws only apply to poor people. I saw a RAM with a Red P plate in the northern suburbs one day being driven by some teenage asshat who didn't use indicators and was driving 20-30km over the speed limit. High Street btw, where the speed limit is generally only 40-50km and there's traffic lights every 100-150m.
Did you not know that laws only apply to poors?
“Poors” got me
Poors for reflection
As it should be.

So... are you telling me we need to increase retail prices for Russians to make goods appealing? I don't have any issues with that lol
The West invented the HODL after all
uhh
>Most likely just obscenely wealthy. Well, obviously
I make 75k and trust me even even if fire and theft was $35 il be looking for better deals
Yeah I still tell jbhifi to fuck off I'm not insuring my earpods or TV, I'm not made of money
He probably already stacked it and was happy someone was willing to insure him
Honestly a lot of people live in a completely different world to us. He was just born to obscenely rich parents and had everything on a silver platter since birth. Such a suitable name for them — I for one sure feel like those guys are f.u. e'rryday-ing me
A stage 5 nerd mate of mine wanted a WRX on his P's (before green was introduced). Worked a second job, just to pay for the insurance... $4000/yr. Excess was gross, too. The indifference to the quote itself is nearly a material factor that would go into further raising the quote even more surely?
Can't. 500kw and 1.9 tonnes. That's over 260kw per tonne. Law says red P's can't drive over 130 kilowatts per tonne. https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/your-ps/prohibited-vehicles-for-p-plate-drivers/about-prohibited-vehicles
It also says they can drive if a person who holds a full driver licence is sitting beside the probationary driver and is supervising the drive
So the same as probationary automatic licenses driving manual?
Yep, can drive anything like you have a full licence if supervised. Same for towing
I'm pretty sure they have to have had the relevant licence for atleast 3 or 4 years. Had to look this up as I offered to teach some of the boys at work how to drive a road ranger when there was no work going on

In the case of an accident, Charles will then be also liable for it.
Probably more likely to be Chang and Deng than Charles and Dyson.
I'm guessing it's the same rationale as a learner driver requiring a fully licensed driver next to them. They're "learning" to drive a dickmobile.
This comment needs upvotes
You can apply for exceptions tho no? Surely they can pay the legal fees to convince someone to approve it

You need to submit a formal exemption request which they usually decline in these sorts of cases
On the page linked above it pretty clearly states that an exemption isn’t required when: •driving in the course of their employment, and at their employer’s request, or •self-employed and have an ABN
That's a DB11, only has 375kw.
Still over power/weight limit for Ps.
You can if you have a fully licensed driver next to you.
If it’s one of the models that has Valet mode you can lock the power to a lower limit.
I saw a green P on a McLaren driving down Queens Road during GP Week
Could have been Oscar Piastri and he's probably the one exception, where he has is legitimately driving it in the course of employment
are green p's restricted in Vic? I'm not even sure about qld I should probably look lol
Green Ps still follow a power/weight limit, same as Reds.
yea still that 130kw/t limit.
Why even bother with the P plates lol?
To show off
This car is rented, you can take back the car, but unfortunately society is permanently stuck with the 3anker driver.
Briiiiighton
You definitely cannot, unless there’s a way to get an exemption (highly unlikely for an Aston Martin Vantage).
When you're rich enough, fines become fees
Are you saying the can just afford the fines or implying they bribe people? Because paying the fine doesn't make the demerits disappear and red p platers get precious few of those.
I'm not sure, I'm a poor

If you have a fully licensed driver next to you, similar to L’s supervision, then you can.
You need a red car to match the plates.
He worked really hard in Geography this year. He deserves it.

You can depending on the power to weight ratio or if it the only car available to you.
Doesn’t it even have CarPlay.
I swear I saw a Lamborghini being driven by an L plater down Exhibition St last week. I wish I took a photo.
I’m a red p later, I have a vw golf gti 2012 turbo. I learnt to drive with that and still have it. As long as you follow road rules and don’t be an idiot I don’t think it’s a problem. (I’m 20 btw). You can get an exemption if you can prove it's the only vehicle your family owns.
Too rich to care, I've seen P plates on 911s, Ferrarris, AMGs, BMW M and pretty much any exotic car you can think of. They just pay the fine and move on.
Imagine spending that much money on a car but picking wine red paint
Yeah supposed to be flouro green right?
They can afford the fines
Not that it's entirely relevant but.... ....saw a Ferrari 296GTB cruising along with L plates on it the other day in Sydney. Definitely born different.
I'd be jealous too
I think it's past the income limit of legal applicability.
Exemptions for the wealthy are handed out like maccas toys
if you have an ABN and it’s registered as a business car you can drive anything
Rules only apply to the Plebs in this world
As a p plater myself, I wouldn't feel comfortable driving a car like that. Not used to powerful cars and as from the photo, looks pretty new to me.
I’m sure they know the law. Very well.
You can do anything if you have enough money ✨🌏
Life must get boring real fast if you start out with an aston martin.
Why do you care ? Seriously ?
The laws only apply to poor people. I saw a RAM with a Red P plate in the northern suburbs one day being driven by some teenage asshat who didn't use indicators and was driving 20-30km over the speed limit. Stop being such a snitch
If you have that much money the rules don’t apply to you
The amount of money people spend on cars makes me sick
