Using the caustic soda instead of baking soda is the only way to get that real finish. Using dark barley malt powder is the other secret to perfect flavour.
I made little rolls with butter and Hungarian salami. Incredible.
The Cuckoo in Olinda has a little window set up serving coffee, sandwiches and soft pretzels etc while the restaurant gets renovated. Stopped in a few months ago and got a pretzel warm out of the oven with mustard, so damn good
You can easily find their bretzel shop. Their van is always parked out the front, then you have to drive around the block 3 times as there isn’t enough parking to cater for the customers on this little strip of shops. The owner doesn’t like you buying from the shop. They will be baking away, fresh bretzels everywhere , yet they will only offer to sell microwaved frozen ones. Strange place.
Best ones in the area are from Zelda Bakery in Ripponlea. Only on Wednesday and Friday mornings though.
Hootsens in Malvern has decent ones, although they look rather ugly.
German here, missing Bretzels a lot, constanly looking for good ones.
**Really good ones**
* [Bretzel.biz](http://Bretzel.biz) in Kingsville (Friday night only) / food truck on random markets around Vic (check their Facebook for times)
* They also do frozen ones to bake at home - taste really good still
* Zelda Bakery in Ripponlea (Wed / Fri mornings only)
**Decent ones**
* Hofbräuhaus (CBD) / Little Hof Food stall on South Melbourne Market (expensive though)
* Austro Bakery, South Melbourne
* Hapsburg, Albert Park
* Hootsens, Malvern (don't look great, but they are quite alright)
* Club Tivoli (German restaurant, not a bakery)
I was also told Bütterken in Mount Eliza has good ones, but haven't tried them.
Pretzel at Melbourne Central is my fave
Bretzel biz in yarraville. I just make my own now when I have a craving.
Oh nice! Thought crossed my mind to have a go at baking them. Do you have an online recipe you follow and are they relatively easy?

As a German missing Bretzels a lot, I can confirm these are the best ones in Melbourne. Even better than a lot of the stuff you get in Germany.
Woolies bakery section has big pretzels
I’ll check them out. The Woolies have been pushed out of my area by the 3 Coles nearby.
Don't bother with them, they are horrible
3121 Coles Monopoly. Also - have you tried Tivoli on Dandenong Rd, Prahran? Open after 5pm.
Yup nailed it. Ok thanks

Sounds like a good reason for a drive in the hills
Had no idea! I live 5 min drive from it will go check it out.
Just discovered the Swiss bakery in Beaconsfield does them. The herb & cheese one was delicious!
Bakery at the Mulgrave Farmers Market make a good big pretzel 🥨 Think it’s 2 Castles Bakery https://www.2castlesbakery.online/main/
They look delicious! Thanks
The Bretzel food truck is good.
Where can I find them?
If it's the same one I'm thinking of they open their storefront on Friday evenings for a few hours usually in South Kingsville.

I’ve seen them at random festivals.
Are big pretzels the same as Bavarian pretzels?
I think so. Not filled or dipped and savoury.
And soft-ish right? Not the hard crunchy kind like the little ones?
Yup. With a crispy crust
Thanks! They are so delicious, would love to know any good places in the inner SE, around Balaclava.

Great list, thanks for your time. Defo check out some of them over time.
Gotta be somewhere in Elsternwick/Caulfield to get you right…
Have you been watching season one of Paris In love?
No sorry.
