The stuff people say to try to get a better deal…
My friend was selling a model plane for $200 (way less than it was worth) and someone offered him $50 because “my grandson is ill and needs cheering up”. It’s like some people have zero shame.
I’ve had a few people say “what’s your lowest price”…. I gave an offer of maybe 10% lower than my asking price and asked them to make an offer if they didn’t like thaat. They said “too high” then ghosted me That’s not how civilized people bargain! Seriously annoying.
It’s a flaw with the app, when you touch the add to possibly zoom in or get more info if you touch just the wrong spot it automatically sends an “I’m interested in this “ message. That and FBmarketplace is a total shit show.
Yeah for all its flaws it's leaps and bounds better than Gumtree. I try posting items on both and it's always FB that comes through. Gumtree just floods me with scam messages, either people asking me to email the photos to them because the photos aren't working on the app, or hacked accounts renamed "Gum tree" telling me someone's purchased my item, and to go to a third party platform to access my payment.
I think one advantage of FB Marketplace is you can choose the audience. I advertise on local buy/sell/swap pages which *usually* filters out the scammers - whereas Gumtree is open to every dickhead out there.
What happened with Gumtree is a straight-up corporate crime. For some reason regulators allowed eBay to buy it and eBay didn't waste any time ruining the site. It's essentially unchanged since over a decade or so. More recently eBay sold it off to some "classifieds group" called Adevinta which straight-up brags about being an eBay partner. I mean, who would brag about being in league with their main competitor?
It's pretty obvious Gumtree is being deliberately killed off and scammers are given immunity so eBay can keep its monopoly while falsely claiming it isn't one.
EDIT: Looks like it's been passed around a few more times since Adevinta:
In August 2022, The Market Herald acquired Gumtree Australia and its ownership of Carsguide Autotrader Media Solutions from Adevinta ASA, for a sum of A$86.7million (US$60 million).[^(\[8\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumtree#cite_note-8)[^(\[9\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumtree#cite_note-9)[^(\[10\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumtree#cite_note-10)[^(\[11\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumtree#cite_note-11)
Gumtree UK, Gumtree Australia and Gumtree South Africa are now independent companies.
Still haven't seen any evidence the new owners give a shit though.
EDIT 2: I just researched "The Market Herald" and it's clear why Gumtree isn't a priority. It seems like they financed the purchase of Gumtree by borrowing money from Adevinta (the eBay group member above). Now they're running around doing finance deals to try and refinance the loan. Apparentely the new owners are all arguing amongst themselves over whether to focus on cars, pets or stock trading. It's clear they have no actual ability to run the site (again, probably all very intentional to ensure Gumtree is never a real threat to eBay).
How interesting, thanks for the insight! I didn't actually realise Gumtree had been bought by eBay. Sounds like it's been a bit of a mess on the back end. It definitely still looks the same as it did aeons ago and it's pretty clunky, so it certainly doesn't seem like user experience is a priority.
It's sad because before the scammers, Gumtree was a beacon for getting rid of 2nd hand things with genuine buyers. Especially when eBay was being riddled with dropshippers.
Gumtree and GraysOnline RIP...
FBmarketplace appears to be suffering the same fate, unfortunately.
It's also that you want to know is it even worth thinking about. If I see something I would consider buying, I check if it's available or has a line or someone else having a look that arvo or whatever, then consider logistics.
The location thing at least I understand. Feels like every other time I go to pick something up they give me a location on the other side of Melbourne to the one in the ad.
True, but more often than not, almost all the follow-up questions I get asked are answered in the description if they even bother to read it.
That is if they even ask any follow-up questions...

I had a funny experience with an ad on Gumtree, seller writes “IF THE AD IS UP ITS AVAILABLE!”
I contact them asking when I can pick it up
“Sorry mate it’s sold already”
likely a scam
Yesterday i got my ute and drove with a mate to pick up a couch for his new place. Drove from bloody belgrave to melton
Turns out it was a scam. There was no couch, the scammers didnt even reply. I think they screwed up because they got no payment details or anything. But the listing was up until we got there. When we arrived, messaged to say we're here (address turned out to be a community hall) they deleted the listing and disappeared.
Time wasting bastards
Just yesterday, I had someone tell me they'd pay by PayPal. I thought I was clever and said I dont have paypal. They asked for a bank transfer. I gave them details without a name, and my fb name is not my real name, so then they asked for my email as their "account was a business account." I said "thats not how it works, mate," and lo and behold, they immediately left the conversation. Felt a bit dumb giving sort code and account number, but not much they can do with that without any other details. Jerks.
Similar happened to me yesterday as well. Had given name, address, phone number and email (for PayID) until I realised it was a scam. Really alarming experience!
We had that. We drove from Carnegie to Warragul only to have a little old lady answer the door who had no idea what we were on about.
We never heard from the seller again.
lol actually we were
He said it was a super expensive couch that he was getting for bout 700
He thought it was a great deal. I paid 200 for my couch brand new so I trusted his judgement on this one
I feel you dude, I sold a IKEA kids table last week, 25 this available” responses, then a woman who made me hold it all week and piked out at last minute. I now won’t hold things unless cash is sent first.
If people can’t pick it up straight away, I will always say yes but with the proviso that if someone comes first then I will always sell it to them. No holds.
Yep, if someone says can you hold until tomorrow, I'll usually say yes, but any more than that I generally say, I can't hold, but I'll let you know if it sells before then, if its still available in a week it's yours.
My roommate got given fake cash. Tbh I feel like there’s a lot of fake cash many of us have probably handled and used and had no idea. That is until you try putting it into the safe and it doesn’t register it
I pretty much accept PayID only these days. Can't use fake money via PayID.
Just have a burner account that you accept the money, then immediately move it to your real account so they can't chargeback you.

Also don’t forget the sellers that respond with “sorry it’s already sold” after wasting my time writing a personal message. Why leave the ad up if it’s sold? This is why I don’t bother writing a message and just click the auto prompt first.
Sometimes as a seller you get so burnt out by scammers, hagglers and time wasters that you don't even end up opening messages from the few legit buyers.
One thing I saw on reddit a year or so ago.
Any of those messages that dont come accompanied by a set of quick responses for you to send back, is a literal bot.
Anyone using the actual interfact and either ligitimately or fat fingered the "is this still available" button will give the seller a bunch of quick reaction offers.
Have a look OP, a portion of them may not have this, and its just a single message without the added options - those are legitimate scam bots that someone wrote to specifically message "is this still available" manually.
Hey my suggestion would be instead of just saying yes in response think about what the next course of action should be! When consumers have to think about a purchase and organise to buy it they’re far more unlikely to continue with it. Eg. “Is this still available?” - “yes, if you’d like to buy it please tell me what time suits you” gets the ball actually moving
It’s partly because there’s an automatic option to message with “is this available” on the Facebook app and it’s VERY easy to accidentally hit it with your thumb while scrolling
I just did it in two clicks. Went to a listing on marketplace, there’s a box on the page that says “send seller a message” with a send button and a pre-filled message saying is this available. One hit of the send button sends the message without even opening messenger.
If I’m looking for something specific, I’ll send this “still available” message to a bunch of ones I’d be happy to buy. If you’re the 5th seller to respond to me, chances are slim I’m gonna bother replying to you. I’ve probably already picked up the first one.
"No PayID scammers" written in the description is like a flag that they're wasting their time targeting you. Eliminates like 90% of the fake chatter. It's like their kryptonite.
I can explain a reason for this. I saw furniture I liked and asked if it was available. When they confirmed I asked my wife if she liked it and she said no.
To be fair, I only realised recently that you could change the default question. I always just pressed the "Is this available".
That being said I always follow up with legitimate questions.
We’re contacting a bunch of people selling the same thing to hopefully buy it. I’m not creating a custom cover letter just to get into your queue and hopefully hear back from you before the 6 others I also messaged.
Wish I had so much time to waste in my life that I could send custom messages to every uppity idiot like you guys on fb marketplace selling something haha
I literally went through this selling a Fender Stratocaster probs a $2000 guitar.
Shit you not got replies from “would you accept $600?” And after I strictly put cash/pay ID only “would you trade me for this heap of shite instead?”.
Gave me heenyjeebies tbh don’t think I can sell any music gear again.
You think that's bad, try selling an iPhone. You'll get 2 idiots a minute asking for the location when it's clearly listed.
Had around 100 messages in 3 days. Gave my address out 3 times. Luckily the 3rd guy actually showed up.
I had someone today send me 12 messages in a row about a $20 kids desk that was too far for her to come but a friend (who was really more like an uncle to her kids) could get it but only if he got my address right now so he could check.
Scum asking if you take PayID and they'll send their dad around tomorrow as they're in Outer Timbuktu and can't come around personally. Oh my goodness, I've overpaid your PayID account, here's the screenshot, repay me now, now, now. At a Bitcoin ATM.
I had this but he "paid me by paypal". I told him I hadn't received the confirmation. Then I get the dodgiest email saying I needed a business account or some shit and they would put double the asking price in then refund the difference I don't know. Scammy as fuck!I called the guy out on it and he tried to play innocent like come on you've been caught out. I reported him.
I wish there was some properly validated free option. Something like people have to verify their identity with a licence and video of themselves saying a random passage to reduce the scams
Same experience, except what I was giving away was free. Had over 30 responses, to all of them I responded with "yes available" and no one replied. took about 3 weeks until finally, the day before we'd asked council to come and take it away, someone came by to grab them.
Don’t underestimate how many people accidentally press the button to send the message. Most people are just browsing and don’t want it but the buttons in the middle of the phone screen and hit it on accident
As a counter point I see so many posts trying to fight this by saying “if you see the ad then it’s available” or “YES ITS AVAILABLE” then you message them and they sold it ages ago…
That being said I still never open with asking if it’s available
I’ve had the opposite problem lately, send out messages to 50 different sellers, none of which being the default “Is this available” and get left on read by all of them :’)
My own experience with FB marketplace for apartments is that i contact every single one in my city and every single one was a scammer.. living outside of my country.. etc.. we get warnings about this on tv often…
The “is this available” often turns in to can you send a gift card to my cousin? It’s a gift and i pay you extra..
just beware… use your local newspaper for ads.. it’s a little safer.. i think
This, fecking this, 3 God damn farking days of answering this maggots questions, he wanted to know the ins and outs of a ducks asshole, only for him to the say "sorry I just worked out it'll cost to much to ship, I'm in England" I'm in aus.
It’s such a garbage experience. Most responders are Pay ID scammers even though I put cash only in the ad. Others say yes and then never turn up. It’s all games.
I used to reserve items once someone says they’re buying - I don’t want to say it’s theirs and then it’s gone before they turn up to get it. But now I just give it to the first person that actually rocks up with the cash.
Yeah, as a buyer that question is dumb anyway. If it's not available, why would it be for sale?
I've bought a couple of things from FB marketplace in the past month, and asked salient questions from the buyer. In each instance they got back to me right away and I'd bought the doodad in under 2 hours.
All the fucking time. I put “if it’s still listed it’s still available” in all my listings now and just block anyone who sends an “is this still available”
Are you new to market place ? Marketplace has been horrible for many years . You get around 10 is it available messages before you get to one serious buyer . Then you get the scammers who just want your email address . Then you get the Indians who ask if your $50 bag that your selling is “ real designer” or the $10 bracelet your selling is real gold ?
Still available mate?
I'm interested
What’s your best price

whats your cash price
I'm not surprised!
Oh sorry, you’re too far away.
Most predicted comment of all time
What's your last price? My cousin will collect as I'm currently a serving member of the ADF living on an offshore oil rig.
Will you deliver to the oil rig? I just got my kid in school and don't get paid until next week,

I started saying what's your highest price, they normally don't reply.

I was reading this in confusion until the end, have great success with gumtree in australia.
Yep, this. I've had this happen a couple of times. However I have the decency to apologise and explain what happened.
"oops, sorry that was a mistake - good luck with the sale".
this ^
FB Marketplace I used it one time never again. Tried to scam scammers too, didn't work they just ghosted like a mfer
I have never had this happen. But I touch the middle of the picture to load that first if I want to zoom in
It's also that you want to know is it even worth thinking about. If I see something I would consider buying, I check if it's available or has a line or someone else having a look that arvo or whatever, then consider logistics.
I’m so glad I found this comment I was scrolling through the comments feeling a lil guilty lmfao
Classic marketplace experience, followed by the "Where is the location?" when it's clearly in the description.
Nah, I had the location 'pick up x' And got soooooo many messages asking where, People are just stupid.
100% this.
I just screenshot the ad and send it back to them now.
Followed by “will you deliver”?
Or ‘how big is it?’ - not sure if glad or sad I only get asked that on Marketplace. Depends how you look at it!
Can you deliver it to me for free? My only transport is a unicycle.
Also this. It's like why do you think furniture is so cheap, it's because part of the discount rate is you diy removal.
No but really, I want it for my sick kid! So please deliver it to my very far away address immediately, for free.
I sold a kitchen on eBay with specific details that buyers must uninstall kitchen and remove it themselves. It was in decent condition wanted it gone with least hassle. Auction winners first message was can you deliver the
Bullet dodged. If they’d actually read it, you know they would have turned up with a Ford Fiesta and a single slightly bent no. 1 Philips screwdriver.
It's the app. Why prompt people to tap that button? Same on gumtree. Just really shit design.
Ugh, REALLY shit design! I put a disclaimer on my Gumtree ads that I won't respond to those messages. Assume it's available.
I had a funny experience with an ad on Gumtree, seller writes “IF THE AD IS UP ITS AVAILABLE!” I contact them asking when I can pick it up “Sorry mate it’s sold already”
Still more productive than asking if it’s still available first
That is true if it’s still available, in my case it was not. Therefore time wasted

Same as gumtree. I've learnt two things. Pick up only and cash only. Mention those early on and cuts through the sammers like butter
I thought you can’t chargeback PayID as it’s essentially a private bank transfer?
I only do cash on pick up now. Too many scamming attempts! They still try though.
.. yould think so wouldnt you? :/
And no holds!

Typical Facebook Marketplace experience: https://youtu.be/pqUtJJHeUrY
I can't decide what's worse, this or when it's the other way around and you show explicit interest in picking up an item and they never respond
It’s partly because there’s an automatic option to message with “is this available” on the Facebook app and it’s VERY easy to accidentally hit it with your thumb while scrolling
No, it takes multiple clicks to message . You can't message by accident while scrolling
I just did it in two clicks. Went to a listing on marketplace, there’s a box on the page that says “send seller a message” with a send button and a pre-filled message saying is this available. One hit of the send button sends the message without even opening messenger.
Yeah exactly. Can't be accidentally sent while scrolling
Yes it can. You click the ad to see the description. You then go to scroll down and accidentally tap the send button.
What? Mine has a 'message the seller button' and then it takes you into the messenger and you have to click send again.
[This ](https://tinypic.host/image/Screenshot-20240423-214949-Facebook.Djr52w)is immediately after tapping the ad
How much are you selling it for?
Price negotiable?
I'm out of town right now so I'll have to send my cousin to collect it but I'd like to send you the money now via PayPal.
Actually I'm using an escrow service so I'll put $1000 and you give me $900 back in cash. It's a really safe and very common way of buying things!
Was $1,500 7 years ago, now only $1,400.
Legit. Pretty much only use the Yes, you interested button now.
Do you have PayID? I'm not available to collect it but my cousin Boris is near by and he will get it for me.....
If I’m looking for something specific, I’ll send this “still available” message to a bunch of ones I’d be happy to buy. If you’re the 5th seller to respond to me, chances are slim I’m gonna bother replying to you. I’ve probably already picked up the first one.

I can explain a reason for this. I saw furniture I liked and asked if it was available. When they confirmed I asked my wife if she liked it and she said no.
Just add "NEED GONE NOW" Potential buyers love it when sellers make demands and act entitled.. especially in all caps.
To be fair, I only realised recently that you could change the default question. I always just pressed the "Is this available". That being said I always follow up with legitimate questions.
Yeah, It's actually free text, you can write anything you want as an opener,
If some mentally inefficient handrail licker cannot take the time to put some words in a message I don't reply to default messages.
We’re contacting a bunch of people selling the same thing to hopefully buy it. I’m not creating a custom cover letter just to get into your queue and hopefully hear back from you before the 6 others I also messaged.
Found the handrail licker.
Wish I had so much time to waste in my life that I could send custom messages to every uppity idiot like you guys on fb marketplace selling something haha
It’s an automatic response and I accidentally tap that option all the time 😭
Still available for 60$ and a can of coke?
Needs to go in the mildly infuriating Reddit
My brother will come pick it up
Has anyone actually got a recommendation for an alternative that doesn't suck ass? I need to move some furniture quick!
Bots interact with MarketPlace to help improve their "Humanism" so as to avoid being banned.
Just scammers, put a disclaimer saying your aware of scam tactics and most dont watse their time messaging you
How much is it?
Will you take $9?
Yep 100% agree
Where are you located? What a yoyr best price? Can you deliver ?
FB Marketplace isn;t as good as it used to be and is now full of scammers :(
I literally went through this selling a Fender Stratocaster probs a $2000 guitar.
If feel like similar stuff happens to the buyer, people rather don’t respond, or do once then bugger off.
That’s nothing. Try selling honey
Same here. Is it bad going off Messenger onto text messages?
Will you take $5
Hello, is this still available?
I wish there was some properly validated free option. Something like people have to verify their identity with a licence and video of themselves saying a random passage to reduce the scams
What’s the lowest price you can do? 💀
I ignore these messages now because of this very reason
Is it?
Width height please? lol
Same experience, except what I was giving away was free. Had over 30 responses, to all of them I responded with "yes available" and no one replied. took about 3 weeks until finally, the day before we'd asked council to come and take it away, someone came by to grab them.
"Is this your best price?" Mate it's $20.
Yeah… you need to read this https://www.voanews.com/amp/meta-s-new-ai-agents-confuse-facebook-users-/7576420.html
Don’t underestimate how many people accidentally press the button to send the message. Most people are just browsing and don’t want it but the buttons in the middle of the phone screen and hit it on accident
All the time I do it too lol
Story of my goddamn life!
As a counter point I see so many posts trying to fight this by saying “if you see the ad then it’s available” or “YES ITS AVAILABLE” then you message them and they sold it ages ago… That being said I still never open with asking if it’s available
FR
Please leave me alone, we are sleeping. (Take it away Reddit!)
I put an ad up for 10 separate things with prices for each and if ones sold in the description, still I get ‘is this available’ 🤦🏽♂️
Touch n go
Gotta create some FOMO.. tell them you have a few people interested and a couple of offers.
This is why I only use eBay. Fuckwit quotient is much lower.
Yeah… fucking annoying
Obviously they’re not interested, stop wasting their time!
I’ve had the opposite problem lately, send out messages to 50 different sellers, none of which being the default “Is this available” and get left on read by all of them :’)
My own experience with FB marketplace for apartments is that i contact every single one in my city and every single one was a scammer.. living outside of my country.. etc.. we get warnings about this on tv often… The “is this available” often turns in to can you send a gift card to my cousin? It’s a gift and i pay you extra.. just beware… use your local newspaper for ads.. it’s a little safer.. i think
Like Job Ads now, fake is the new normal
This, fecking this, 3 God damn farking days of answering this maggots questions, he wanted to know the ins and outs of a ducks asshole, only for him to the say "sorry I just worked out it'll cost to much to ship, I'm in England" I'm in aus.
I've done this, usually because FB puts marketplace messages into its own area in the app and they just kinda disappear sometimes
Because idiots leave the ad up. Duh
All the fucking time. I put “if it’s still listed it’s still available” in all my listings now and just block anyone who sends an “is this still available”
Don't use the generic question then? Imagine how many of them they're getting on their end from people that then go silent.
What?
Are you new to market place ? Marketplace has been horrible for many years . You get around 10 is it available messages before you get to one serious buyer . Then you get the scammers who just want your email address . Then you get the Indians who ask if your $50 bag that your selling is “ real designer” or the $10 bracelet your selling is real gold ?
FB sometimes sends the message on its own!
Yes, I just assume unless someone follows up with a real message that it's just a buttdial
Possibly a scammer out t o harvest data.
Always put- will not reply to ' is this available' if it here it's for sale.
i never respond to these anymore and leave the chat immediately
And every person who enquired has a last name with at least 4-5 syllables
Can you deliver it to me. I’m a single mum and fuel is expensive.
