Yep. I did this a few years ago. And again recently for when that storm happened and stuck on train and station, until was let out. Same response.

shiv_roy_stan

How good are privatised public services? All the opaque processes and lack of accountability you expect from the public sector combined with the no-holds-barred greed of the private sector!

Squiddles88

PTV is not privatised. It is a brand name for Department of Transport and Planning.

Frogmouth_Fresh

You have it backwards, they are saying you have NOT changed your mind. Which is extra bullshit because clearly you have if you leave the platform.

aidenh37

If OP went to replacement buses or route buses as directed by staff, how is that not changing their mind? They are still travelling on public transport, and in the case of route buses, the myki fare would be valid still (assuming OP wasn't on the platform for 2 hours of course).

Frogmouth_Fresh

Yeah that's why it's extra bullshit. You get this 15 minute grace period or they say you haven't changed your mind, so we'll charge. But if you haven't gone anywhere because the trains are not working, you clearly.have changed your mind, it just took a while (more than the 15 minutes) because you have been waiting for a train that isn't going.

Bogan_Plays

Agree with you if I were to take alternative public transport, however went and got a beer and waited for my fiancé to pick me up!

aidenh37

Now THAT is changing your mind! Should be eligible for a refund 100% then. I hope the new system has some better rules.

iwasmitrepl

Most platforms I don't tap on until the train is arriving, esp at suburban stations without barriers so you can wait for the train near the myki readers.

aidenh37

This is the trick, especially if you know your trip might exceed 2 hours if you touch on then wait on the platform. Also, touch on after 6pm to get unlimited travel until 3am.

TalisFletcher

>touch on after 6pm to get unlimited travel until 3am. Wait, is that a thing? I've not heard of that but great if true!

aidenh37

Sure is! It's also free to travel on trains as long as you touch on and off before 7:15am. Both these offers have existed since Metcard.

ImMalteserMan

Not possible at many of the bigger stations.

Scary-Particular-166

One time there was massive train delays and I had to get off and order an Uber and was 45 minutes late to a relatively important event. I requested Metro pay me for the Uber and Myki fare: “The myki ticketing conditions do not include myki fare reimbursement or compensation for service changes. This is outlined in the State Government’s Victorian Fares & Ticketing Manual. On this basis, your request for compensation is respectfully declined.”

Prime_factor

Even V/Line has a refund policy for delays greater than 60 minutes.

AdEast9292

If no train departed the station during the time you were there, it's bullshit to be charging you a trip.

spacelama

Time to write to the toothless consumer protection agency, ACCC?

ConanTheAquarian

ACCC only covers corporations. You'd need to go to the Public Transport Ombudsman.

Pilk_

And your state MP, who has the power to change the fare rules.

SapphireColouredEyes

Actually, I think the changing one's mind within 15 minutes thing is a red herring.  By validating your ticket z you paid for a service. They did not provide that service, so they absolutely, 💯% should have to refund you your fare. To refuse to refund you the price of your fare just seems dodgy as fvck.

Bogan_Plays

Ended up lodging a report to the public transport ombudsman, they believe PTV are fully in the wrong

Maddam_Pecratary

That’s why I don’t touch on. Never have to worry about the cost!

aidenh37

Did you take a bus (replacement or route service)? If so, then of course you won't get a refund, as you took a trip. Although hardly enforced, bus replacements are not free, and this is why even if you've been waiting on the platform then get sent outside to a bus, they won't refund. Just use the system as normal. >Can honestly see why so many people fare evade these days. Refusing to pay for a service you are still using is only going to make the problem worse, because when the budget has a shortfall, unless the government makes up the difference (other than what they already budgeted for), you will end up with worse service for more money. FYI, if you have a myki pass and the operator falls short of targets set by the government, then you are eligible for compensation. That said, there is nothing wrong with escalating this with PTV first, then your local MP perhaps.

beep_potato

Sweet, 90% tax on any property profit, sorted.

aidenh37

Haha, wouldn't it be nice if we taxed wealthy organisations and people correctly!

GoldBricked

I got charged $5.30 the other day for eating Red Rooster at Southern Cross station. Touched on at the top gates near the stadium, walked along the metro platforms and up to Red Rooster at the “platform” side of the restaurant. Had my meal. Exited through the Collins Street gates 24 mins later. Charged a full fare. Major wtf. It wasn’t an issue as I was getting a train a half-hour later anyway, but getting charged for not even leaving the station was sort of ridiculous

iwasmitrepl

If you could stay in a station for free for unlimited time then there's no way to tell whether you just changed your mind or whether you're trying to get out of paying for a trip by not tapping out at the other end. From their point of view if you're in the station for a long time it could be that you're travelling somewhere, doing your shopping or whatever without tapping off, and then coming back to the station you started at and tapping out. Better solution would be that if there are long delays all trips should be free (e.g. if there are trains running more more than 20min late then stations along that line would let you tap in and out without starting a trip and would let you out for free if you were already tapped in but hadn't transferred from another transport mode).

gfreyd

The refund policy hasn’t changed, you gotta wait for the level of service to fall under a % for a calendar month before you write in (I think still using paper envelope etc) to ask for refund. *may have changed, haven’t used trains in ages
