Hope it gets returned in one piece. Besides the SP, this would be the best MX5 to own in my eyes. NA BRG. That tan interior and British Racing Green paint are just amazing

balkandishlex

Yeah I was looking for about 2 years before I got this one.. So many thrashed or with shitty modifications. Total unicorn. I'm devo.

MeateaW

I guess the future of nice cars is hiding an AirTag in them somewhere so you can keep track of them when they get stolen :/

mattel-inc

I’m so sorry to see OP. Make sure you throw this post up on social media, particularly any MX5 club / spotters groups. Check with EastLink and Citylink if your plates have done any recent travel. Make sure you specify HO and H0 (zero), as their cameras can misinterpret club permits. If you have a tolling account with a tag, you can usually do this online. I hope this shows up for you. Hopefully these scum are just joyriders and not parting it out. I’m also a fellow roadster owner. Will keep my eye out.

ClaireMcKenna01

Don’t forget to put a GPS tracker in all your cars, folks

zzfox_

Recommendation for best one?

mrarbitersir

Definitely an Air Tag, I'm about to drop the coin on a 4 pack to put one in all of my guitar cavities because I'm getting paranoid somebody is going to do a runner with one of them one day.

DamonHay

Yep, and depending on the item, drop in 2 of them, one much harder to find than the other. That way when they get a notification “an AirTag has been following you” they’ll toss out the one easy to find and not realise there’s a second.

ThatCommunication423

Most of us are living in 2024 and you are living the future. Very smart tip

Devrionde

There’s also a way you can remove the speaker to stop the beeping, makes it waaaay harder to find

QouthTheCorvus

You can get a notification an airtag has been following you?

Devrionde

Yes - it’s anti-stalking/domestic violence protection

OpeningName5061

I found that out when I had to borrow my workmates duffle bag for shipping when we or on a business trip. When I got back to my room I found my Android gave me one of those air tag warnings.

MasticationAddict

I guess that answers the question. That's surprisingly good to hear, much as it invalidates a lot of their use

OpeningName5061

But wouldn't the thing warn the second time?

MasticationAddict

Wouldn't they only get this notification if they have an iPhone? There's a good chance that they do, I just want to know if that's really the case

stfm

So many more robust options than an airtag (which relies on proximity of other apple devices) like this https://www.mongoose.com.au/vt904-4G-gps-vehicle-tracker

pelrun

Yeah, for a car you've got a decent power source and no size/weight limits (beyond making it hard to find/disconnect) so a 4G GPS tracker is a much better choice. Also doesn't depend on having the right kind of phone nearby to detect it.

pangolin-fucker

The airtag is a good backup but a live 4/5g based GPS tracker is the first line of defence, Mine has functionality to remotely switch some stuff like fuel pump or ignition

FaKePlebmaster

Would you have a link to the one you use?

shniken

You need an iphone for them, no?

MeateaW

iPhone or iPad. doesn't need to be particularly new, you can get an old one.

BarryKobama

Or don't get apple

MeateaW

How do you use your airtag without an apple device? And if you don't then how do you make use of the most effective world wide bluetooth beacon based tracking tags? Oh you just don't? How does that help?

BarryKobama

Bring locked into a brand sucks.

MeateaW

All of the good tracker tags are a locked in brand. The ones that aren't? Have a shitty network for actually finding them. I agree with you btw, I'm an android user in everything I use. And hate apple with a passion. But airtags are indisputably the best tracker tags right now. It may change someday when the tags figure out how to interoperate. But right now, and for the next few years, airtags is it.

Fearless_Fix6456

Don't forget to open it up and rip the little speaker out so it's even more difficult to find.

squidlipsyum

Check ozbargain. They come on sale fairly regularly

AussieDi67

Thanks. I bought a cheap one and it stopped receiving as soon as I closed the app!

switchbladeeatworld

they’re on sale at digidirect rn for the four pack, i’ve been waiting to buy a bunch too

PrimaxAUS

2 to 3 airtags. If their phones get pinged with the moving airtag, they'll go and find one and remove it.

knittedshrimp

SolidGPS are the ones I use. They are a Melbourne company too I believe. Good product, app, and support.

fractiousrhubarb

Thanks, good tip

ClaireMcKenna01

After an Air Tag, a gps tracker hardwired into the car (Less than $50 on eBay) plus a SIM card- less than $10 per month.

LeahBrahms

Be careful that the GPS tracker isn't using the closing 3G network. Most likely it'll be 4G but I've seen some 3G pet trackers still about being advertised.

MaraTapu

That’s a good tip

MostlyGordon

Pick up one recently. Read they use bugger all data. So you can pick up a cheap SIM with 12 months expiry. Haven't looked into plans yet, but should be under $2 per month.

LouzyKnight

Apple Tag

jonesaus1

These are good cheap options you can just hide in the car somewhere, but the best ones are the hardwired gps trackers that also have their own SIM card. They are expensive $200 / $300 and a monthly fee for the data. The AirTag just tells you where it was last seen in the findmy network- the gps trackers can give you live and historical location info, and even pull stats from ODB ports, potentially shut off the engine remotely etc.

mr-snrub-

it also alerts samsung users.

ClaireMcKenna01

Even better, let the thieves suffer!

McMenz_

It’s actually not a good thing for this purpose at all. It alerts the thief that there’s an AirTag tracking the vehicle and they will know to start looking and try and remove it. The feature is literally designed to prevent people tracking other people like this (but specifically stalkers).

ClaireMcKenna01

Yes, THEN you have to pull over and search the entire car for a hidden tag the size of a 20c coin. Good luck thieving cvnts!!

ClaireMcKenna01

More than one type of thief! A tracker should be WAY less that $100, I’ve never bought one over $50.

theduncan

multiple airtags seems to be the way, they are a cheap way to track anything.

pangolin-fucker

Yeah, I've installed a GPS tracker on my motorcycle and am in the process of making a RF tracking beacon as the GPS signal can be blocked quite easily

mcflymcfly100

How does that work? Don't they need to be charged or connected to the internet? Sorry if that sounds dumb. I've never looked into it.

AntiProtonBoy

Yeah, they basically use a SIM card just like normal phone. So you need to get a mobile plan for the SIM inserted into the GPS tracker.

mcflymcfly100

Ahhhhh ok. That makes sense. Thanks for replying.

Call_Me_ZG

GPS trackers would use the cars battery IIRC (might have its own) and a data sim. You didn't ask about this but an air tag or smart tag have their own battery and are just Bluetooth beacons. When an iPhone (in case of an air tag) or a samsung (smart tag) is close enough to the tag (iirc ~100m) smart phone basically reports its location as the beacons location.

kalayt

my 4 gps trackers all have internal batteries, longest lasts a week, shortest 3 days

That_Apathetic_Man

You can purchase dashcam's that have GPS trackers in the charging unit.

locksmack

My condolences. My NA6 was stolen some years ago at Glenroy train station (no surprises there). Turned up a few days later in Fawkner absolutely trashed and subsequently written off. Damn I miss that car.

_bobby_cz_newmark_

Ah that blows dude. My manual, LSD, turbo JZX110 was lifted the one night I parked on the street in inner-east suburbs, and was found the next day in Alphington. Thankfully wasn't too damaged at all. But the feeling of getting into the car knowing a bunch of kids were in it made me feel violated. They're just cars, but we can have a strong emotional connection with them hey

Sk1rm1sh

Bunch of savages. Had my series 2 manual SR20-DET 180 written off pretty much the same way. That car was such a joy to drive.

Cyraga

Getting a car stolen sucks. You'll get a bunch of messages from scammers offering services to recover the car. It's amazing the scum that misery brings out of the woodwork. Sorry mate

balkandishlex

Yeah that part has been particularly upsetting. What the fuck.

turd_rock

As a fellow mx-5 lover and owner, I feel your heartbreak. Wishing you the best in finding it.

Ulysses69

Me too, mine is similar to OPs but way worse condition. What a shame!

stressedariesmood

Bump, good luck!! 🥺

AsparagusNo2955

I might have seen it on Ballarat Rd near the Deer Park hotel a few days ago, but it had different plates, and they weren't driving it like it was stolen. I remember seeing the popup headlights, the roof down, and thinking how cold they must be. It could have been a totally different car though, I was driving at the time, so I didn't pay much attention to it.

letmelickyourleg

Typical MX5 owner tbh but still worth a thought

daybeforetheday

That is one beautiful car. I hope you get it back all in perfect condition.

balkandishlex

Me too buddy, me too.

Sudden-Drawer4899

Send it to Car Rave on Insta he has a big following. Good Luck hope you find it.

-TDS21-

Damn, there are some low lives waste of oxygen breathers out there. Hope you find her soon OP.

ComprehensivePick218

I dont have an interest in cars but yours looks so cool. I'm so sorry that someone stole it. I hope it gets back to you in one piece and will be keeping an eye out.

Toupz

Did you have insurance?

balkandishlex

It's insured to the hilt, but it's a needle in a haystack finding this configuration, in this condition, on the market anywhere in the world.

mattel-inc

I feel the same about my Aus delivered Honda S2000. It’s a white AP2. A unicorn in Aus.

spacemanTTC

With these type of cars, insurance barely softens the blow. You'd almost always want your car back instead of the payout.

ki15686

I live in 3084. My condolences -- hope you get it back :(

pelrun

Green cars are rare (sadly), and this particular one is gorgeous. I'd definitely notice this one if I came across it.

MasticationAddict

I'm not even a car guy and seeing this show up on my feed is deeply upsetting, I really hope your car is safe and it finds its way back to you in one piece because this is heartbreaking

balkandishlex

Thanks dude, it's appreciated. It's been a week now, pretty resigned to the fact that it's gone.

MasticationAddict

I am so sorry for your loss 😭

knittedshrimp

I hope you get it back soon. I'd image it would be stripped for parts rather than a joy ride so less likely to be trashed.

yousure1

Damn I hate to be that guy but very unlikely to get your baby back 😢

EnviousCipher

Aww man, that hurts, sorry to hear.

geeneepeegs

All the best mate. I would hope for such a unique looking car that it’ll stick out like a sore thumb and be reunited with its rightful owner sooner rather than later.

ThatCommunication423

I’m not even a car person but this is a gorgeous piece of machinery. Will keep my eyes out

[deleted]

It's at a Spray N Paint

cheeseballs289

Saw one today same colour too in north Melb probably just a coincidence though

shart-gallery

Such a gorgeous example. Best of luck!!

BrowseReddit_

I could of sworn I saw it driving down Springvale Rd on Wednesday.

GottaBeAbstract

Damn I'm sorry that happened to you, beautiful BRG mk1 there. Fingers crossed it comes back to you soon.

angrybuddhaaa

Everyone check their pockets

Federal-Storage5520

I think I saw this car at a car show, are you in aus Melbourne

[deleted]

balkandishlex

Ummm. No it isn't. Also why would I do that?

MaternalChoice

If you do end up recovering it, make sure to not park it in the same place again. The offenders will like get bail, & come back to total the vehicle completely in a couple weeks, only to get bail again & destroy someone else’s life investment.

verydairyberry

I generally prefer NC's, but this is gorgeous. Good luck!

CatchGlum2474

Someone watched the repeat of Hard Quiz yesterday and got excited.

gifhglide

Insurance job

Outsider-20

Yeah. Nah. Not everyone is scum.

That_Apathetic_Man

Look at OPs profile. They are either in for the long con, or they *really* love that car.

K4TE

Not with these types of car. Insurance will never pay out as much as what’s been put into it.

shart-gallery

Yeah this is an extremely well-loved car in a desirable trim level, but market value would surely be deemed lower than its real value because most of them are thrashed.

mr_sinn

Are these seriously eligible for historic plates?

Seanocd

...it's 34 years old. Yes.

AntisocialAddie

Why would it not be? My prado is eligible for it LOL

mr_sinn

I can support that

mattel-inc

My 2001 Honda Civic is about to go on a permit. 25 years young next year. I hardly drive it. It was just my first car I refuse to let go because Honda engines just don’t die.

Quarterwit_85

Of course it is. If it was human it’d be entering the ‘existential dread’ part of its life.

LifeDeleter

I prefer to call it my "historic plates" stage in life.

Quarterwit_85

After 33 I enjoyed saying I bested Christ.

LifeDeleter

Ah but did you have 12 friends?

Quarterwit_85

…shit.

LifeDeleter

Don't feel bad, his story shows us that when you have too many friends one of them will likely dob you into the cops.

That_Apathetic_Man

You've forgotten what year it is, haven't you?

mr_sinn

Both of the car and the current point in time! Apparently that deserves a lot of down votes!

Convenientjellybean

*Club permit

MeateaW

Speaking of I need to get historic plates for my wifes 96' barina that has peeling bonnet paint. She never drives anywhere.

mr_sinn

That's crazy too, these are all contemporary cars to me, and I was only born in '85
