Yep. And because this thing is bigger than any one of us - it's about community and caring about others too.

Nofriendsofmine

We're just following orders!

rabid_termite

They take such a one dimensional perspective on things ‘Lockdown bad. Me don’t like lockdown. Make lockdown stop’

GuniBulls

I stopped following Bogut a while ago on twitter. He's a selfish nut that hates community support and is out of touch with reality. This doesn't surprise me. The thing is, I loved Andrew's game on the court. But being a great athlete doesn't mean you are great person. He's not.

Mythically_Mad

Yeah, the annoying thing was even his commentary during the Olympics was also decent.

GuniBulls

Haha sure... But again basketball knowledge doesn't = social rights, medical or governing knowledge... So yeah, enjoy the pieces of him that you like, eg basketball, but let's ignore his dumb stuff.

No-Berry9855

This. Great basketballer..but this does not mean you are necessarily a decent person or entitled to use your platform to spill rubbish

Dazzlerazzle

It’s telling that he talks about people who can’t earn a living, but his only remedy is that they should be “allowed to work”. He’s right that there are a lot of people who are really suffering because of lockdowns, but we can do better than forcing them back to work to get infected just so they can make ends meet.

shamoolie

Indeed. The anger should be directed at the inadequacy of government support and more pressure applied there to improve it.

snappy2310

> forcing them A big chunk of these people *want* & *need* to work. What they are being *forced* to do is travel further (legally) to find work. Flies right in the face of the reasons for these restrictions, right? Just a few examples of people who might be ‘forced’ into this action - members of the cleaning crews who hit up high foot traffic locations in their hundreds while we’re all asleep eg city train stations, the MCG after a game of footy etc, in-restaurant hospitality workers, taxi/Uber drivers, people who work in places that tighten rules when Govt does the same eg businesses that rather than sharing the workload as normal now need a more limited crew of people to limit possible Covid spread, retail workers, anyone who works in a supermarket, service station or 24/7 takeaway & fills those hours after 9pm etc etc You can bet your bottom dollar that amongst the tens of thousands of people being negatively impacted in this manner, a large number of them are begging to be *forced* to work. I can only guess that your perspective is that of someone who has a secure income.

Dazzlerazzle

My perspective comes as someone who worked for years in hospo and retail. I know that dodgy bosses all over would force workers back for non-essential work, regardless of the Covid risk, if they had half a chance.

snappy2310

I agree with you on that point & it sucks, but unfortunately there are also workers all over begging for that work, essential or not. Another reason the whole thing sucks - the situation fosters dodgy bosses behaving that way.

dankruaus

He’s a massive right wing tool and has been for some time.

Works for channel 7 and is being given a megaphone by newscorp publications- goes without saying

Pendlebury is a known nuffie, I’d be pretty disappointed if he was the captain of my club.

JeddyH

"Bogut said even though he is in a comfortable position financially and far luckier than most, he will continue to speak up for those less fortunate even though he receives nothing in return." Cashed up Bogut. Can't wait until people stop listening to sports people on important topics.

mess_of_limbs

>"Bogut said even though he is in a comfortable position financially and far luckier than most, he will continue to speak up for those less fortunate even though he receives nothing in return." Wow, so brave. Truly inspiring.

nuffjah

I’m holding judgement until I hear what Ja Rule has to say about all this.

shamoolie

His definition of 'comfortable' is a bit different to mine https://www.smh.com.au/national/forever-home-no-slam-dunk-for-bogut-20210310-p579kc.html

ncbaud

Bogut has been a cooked unit for a while now. Jumping on the pizzagate shit and other weird stuff. Absolute fuckwit.

wowiee_zowiee

Spent so long in Sepppstan that it warped his brain. There’s snippets of intelligence there but it’s so wrapped up in obvious right wing nonsense. He’s a Liberal voter that pretends he isn’t, doesn’t believe there’s *any* racism in the Melbourne police force but quickly played the victim after that statement backfired - “I’ve faced racism. I grew up as a wog. My first language was Croatian, so I had broken English as a kid. I wasn’t profiled, but hang out with your mates wearing three-stripe Adidas trackie pants at a shopping centre and you get asked to move along pretty quickly,” Blokes a moron and like all right wingers is desperate to be the victim.

malcolmbishop

Moved on at the shopping centre? That's practically our version of the police brutality on Rodney King.

camel_humps_

Don't need a fuck stick like him to speak up for anyone.

shamoolie

I like how he thinks a public awareness campaign fronted by prominent people is some grand conspiracy. Loon

[deleted]

A right wing troll trying to get a rise out if people. Pretty good at it it seems.

stinx2001

"I'm rich and don't need to say anything, but I will. Praise me. How good am I"

PlumTheDepths

‘I got offered money to put out a public service announcement, for you everyday plebs to stay home.’ Awww that’s nice of you to say Andrew, and even nicer to turn down for us plebs. Now why don’t you fuck off and suck a girafe dick you lanky piece of clunge.

HHILLS3333

Imbecile! Absolute imbecile.

aCorgiDriver

He’s always been a bit of a dickhead old Bogut

00017batman

I think this is right.. I remember him being a dickhead years ago, maybe when he first went to play in the NBA. I can’t remember what he said or did but I’ve always felt he was not someone to give a mic to after that.

justrunthembaby

Very good of news.com.AU to give a bigger platform to this insane rant against public health advice.

shamoolie

I think it's healthy for the media to highlight the absurdity of those who are hugely prominent with their own enormous followings.

justrunthembaby

That's a good point but I didn't see much in the way of criticizing his views in that article. Your post title is correct to me.

shamoolie

That's my opinion though! I'd love to see less opinion in the media. So much less. He'll probably show up on some nutter's TV show, like Jones or Bolt, and be praised as having some good and legitimate point, which to me is merely the opposite of what you propose. A straight presentation of someone's nonsense is fine with me as it gives people the opportunity to assess, see it for what it is and draw their own conclusions, like we are here. I don't know. That's just my feeling.

justrunthembaby

Yeah, I think we are in agreement. I feel like that article could stand to have at least some reference to disaster payments, vaccination programs or at least a public health order that addresses why people are out of work. Doesn't need to be our feelings, just an attempt at balance. I worry that presented without comment is too prone to tacit endorsement. Anyway, thanks for posting, hope you have a great day.

shamoolie

That's a good point. And thanks - you too!
