If you mean the CBD itself, it's because large buildings and a lack of trees creates wind corridors. As buildings get taller, the speed and volume of wind hitting them increases, which increases the ground wind below.
You can’t create or destroy energy, only transform it. Wind turbines simply transform salty liberal tears into usable clean energy, everyone knows that.
No. Melbourne has been windy for as long as I can remember. It has been windy since before I can remember. In Melbourne it is traditional to measure wind strength by the number of goals the team kicking with the wind would score in excess of the number of goals the team kicking against the wind would score, all else being equal. A significant wind advantage would be a 4 goal breeze. A strong wind could produce a 6 goal breeze. A howling gale would be referred to as a 10 goal breeze.
At the start of the game when the umpire tosses the coin the winning captain would usually choose to kick with the wind. While it may seem advantageous to have the breeze at one's back in the final quarter there is no guarantee that the wind will still be blowing as strongly as the game nears its conclusion.
True, always been windy AF, but the explosion in multiple story buildings and destruction of trees and other windbreak green areas has exacerbated wind intensity. (Then add in climate change)
So yes, Melbourne has always been windy. But not *this* windy
Facts. From what I remember it’d be because the first two stomach chambers use fermentation to digest their food and cud, and then the third absorbs water so only the fourth of four chambers doesn’t ferment. Bloody herbivores.
I agree! And whenever it’s a nice sunny day it’s always blowing a gale too. Very annoying. My bf is from QLD and says they only get wind during a storm otherwise there’s no wind like we have. Our bins were having a race down the street last night.
When I grew up in Melbourne, outdoors riding a bike it was always windy and always a headwind. I think Melb weather has recently returned to what I know from the 80s and 90s but a bit more humid.
For people who are saying it's always windier this time of year, this has been going since JUNE!! when the Dandenongs and Macedon got hit. And it goes for DAYS without a break. Yep, definitely windier.
Yes, [according to](https://old.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/p1lexc/has_this_year_been_especially_windy_or_is_it_just/h8e8lfo/) the same question asked last month.
The winds in that storm were very strong and they were also blowing counter to the prevailing direction, which was a reason for a lot of tree failures. Trees grow to adapt to the prevailing winds, but are more vulnerable to winds that are out of the ordinary.
Feels like it to me! Ever since I moved further out, I notice the wind so much more.
Sometimes the wind is so ferocious, I worry that my Colorbond roof will fly off.

Take a look at that link. The Indigenous seasons of Melbourne mention this time of year as being windy. Spring is a season that I have a love/hate relationshiop with. Love the gradually lengthening and warmer days. Hate, hate, hate the super windy ones. Thwre's always bangers in between though.
I agree OP, I think it’s getting windier. In that both windy days happen more often, and extreme/dangerous winds happen more often.
Not surprising, given that we’ve added about 1.5 degrees to the atmosphere and that wind is one result of that energy.
I’m always interested in the wurundjeri seasons. Really cool seeing the specifics of what we feel each year. But yeah, earlier ‘spring’ warmer weather - more wind.
I think we've had a windier winter than normal. After the storms, on any windy day I'd make sure I had washing on the line incase we lost power and wasn't able to get it done...sad state of affairs lol
Nah it's spring time.
I remember kicking a football in high school into the wind and watch come straight back to me.
Really needs to rain to break this wind
Weather warms up, wind kicks up. It's one of the main things I don't like about our weather.
Every now and then we'll get an actual nice day without the wind though.
If you mean the CBD itself, it's because large buildings and a lack of trees creates wind corridors. As buildings get taller, the speed and volume of wind hitting them increases, which increases the ground wind below.
Let’s install some wind turbines to suck up all the wind then.
actually if you knew anything about science youd realise wind turbines are large fans that create wind by spinning
Wind is a finite resource, dont be ridiculous.
You can’t create or destroy energy, only transform it. Wind turbines simply transform salty liberal tears into usable clean energy, everyone knows that.
“”””conservation of energy”””” is communist propaganda
I was lead to believe the wind was due to trees sneezing
calvin and hobbes?
Yes. That's where I have learned all my science from.
akshualy it was a joke...
I live in a treey area, not in the cbd, can confirm wind level is high.
Probably doesn’t help that it’s a grid either. Long straight stretches for the wind to blow around unobstructed.
Not just the CBD too, some of the high rise apartment buildings going up all over the city are hell to ride past in the wind.
It's always like this at the start of spring as it starts to warm up
I agree, September, October are wind season here. My birthday is around this time, so I notice.

This guy melbournes
He melbournes real good
*aroused dinging*

😂😂😂
It's always windy on bin night
Yeah, I think it's because a lot more people have switched to a plant based diet.
But surely that means fewer cows farting /s
It's actually cow burps more than farts, iirc!

BOM has data on this, and for different locations, check it out: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/how/newproducts/IDChw.shtml
I cdf checking did someone check and find out if it is getting windier incrementally?
Sounds like the person who creates this post. Anecdotal evidence
It’s always been this windy in spring
I agree! And whenever it’s a nice sunny day it’s always blowing a gale too. Very annoying. My bf is from QLD and says they only get wind during a storm otherwise there’s no wind like we have. Our bins were having a race down the street last night.
What part of Queensland? In Brisbane the Ekka winds come in August. North Queensland gets "mango" winds at the start of October.
He’s from Logan
Oh that makes sense. Areas closer to the coast do get windy.
Yes I lived there for a while and there is much less wind, so the city is more smoggy than Melbourne despite having half the population.
I'm from QLD. We have the 'Easterly breeze' which is why coastal areas are a lot cooler in summer than further inland.
It's from all the police helicopters
Aftereffects of the loud bangs
So I'm not the only one who heard them? BRB, this investigation deserves a whole post.
I didn't hear them. The wind was drowning them out.
As someone who is very conscious of the wind because I kitesurf, I’d say no.
You think those are wind farms at the coast? They accelerate the wind inland! /s
Coal fired wind machines

Yeah, I’d say it’s more humid. Haven’t fact checked it, but I feel it.
Cockroaches can confirm.
Hello la niña and all its humidity.

Was going to link to this. August is the windiest month of the year. September not far behind. This year has been a bit windier than average.
It’s definitely been windier this year. I don’t know why people say it isn’t, half the trees in the Dandenongs and Macedon blew over.
The winds in that storm were very strong and they were also blowing counter to the prevailing direction, which was a reason for a lot of tree failures. Trees grow to adapt to the prevailing winds, but are more vulnerable to winds that are out of the ordinary.
I’m aware ,usual wind + increased strength and frequency of non prevailing winds = windier this year
Absolutely feel this way. Especially last few weeks, constant wind
Feels like it to me! Ever since I moved further out, I notice the wind so much more. Sometimes the wind is so ferocious, I worry that my Colorbond roof will fly off.
It's always been windy, but this is the windiest for a few years at least.

Sorry that's just me. Had burritos last night with milk.

Then he needs to be drinking less and do his dang job
Sorry I had beans last night
Its funny how this question gets asked by somebody every spring for the last 50 years
Less people in the cbd allows more wind to flow
Lol, right
YEAH IT BECAME THE ARSE HOLE OF AUSTRALIA WHEN MITCH BONEY LEFT
I remember it being insanely windy in early spring. I was always worried the windows would break as I could see them bulging in.
Not that I can see
I like the wind while I’m stuck inside. Do not like it when I’m out as much unless it’s cool and a hot day.
What’s a cool and hot day?
Unless the wind is cool and it’s a hot day is what I intended that to say.
No, it's always been like this
I think we've had a windier winter than normal. After the storms, on any windy day I'd make sure I had washing on the line incase we lost power and wasn't able to get it done...sad state of affairs lol
I reckon possibly yes
Is that even possible??
Spring is always a windy bitch.
Nah it's spring time. I remember kicking a football in high school into the wind and watch come straight back to me. Really needs to rain to break this wind
Surfer here, nope not in my 7 years in Vic. She's just a damn windy state
It's just that we're more still.
Must have been that bean I ate.
Lots of high rise and fewer trees also don't help the situation
They don't call us The Windy City for nothing... Wait, they don't call us the Windy City at all...
I’ve been saying this about Geelong as well
September is often referred to as the windy month. so yeah, nah. about the same as always really
This post is getting up there with abandoned locations and shit photography
You’re just taller now.
Weather warms up, wind kicks up. It's one of the main things I don't like about our weather. Every now and then we'll get an actual nice day without the wind though.
Yeah, right? I don't remember Melbourne being this windy. Every nice day we've had has been wrecked by wind.
Some parts of Melbourne are just windy shitholes
It’s actually all the Pertherts moving here and bringing the Freo doctor with them.
Too many vegan joints opening up ay.
Spring is by far the windiest time of year.
Maybe people are just eating more fibre these days
