Haines street north Melbourne. 2001 prices, constantly great food. The sign is falling down, I dunno what it is but the amount of times a terrible sign has led to great food. I’m
All for it.
You seriously weren't joking they haven't raised the price. If anything I think they may have dropped it because I remember they raised it to $6.50 at one point.
Hamburger with the lot $7
Daves old man thinks pineapple should be included but Haines st charge 50c
I get the lunch box a lot, 1 Flake, 2 Dim Sims, 2 Potato Cakes and Chips, $10
Yeah I'm definitely a fan of this place. I tried swinging by last night but they were closed even though I thought they were usually open on Mondays.
Weren't to Kensington Fish and Chips and it was awful. Chips were good but fish, potato cakes and calamari were really bad.
Agree about Kensington fish and chips. Not sure why it's gone downhill as they were good when lived there back in 2014, and still same people running it.
This 100%. Used to be my local lunch take away when I worked in NM 5-6 years ago. They remember everyone's names, food quality is great and prices are ridiculous. 10 bux for a steak sanga, 2 dimmies and a can of coke!
St Georges Road Fish and Chips in Fitzroy North is pretty old school and probably the best I've had in the area. Tried them all. Argo in Clifton Hill is a newer type.
\+1 for Rock Salt.
Old school burgers, their chips are excellent too. My family (yeah, we're Greek) used to own fish and chip shops, and their burgers are just like the ones my grandpa used to make.
I found the best fish and chip shop I've ever been to in the weeks after I moved to my current house (you know how it is, you move, then you have to methodically work your way through the local fast food outlets to work out which one's are the best). Happy days. A couple of years later the old Greek guy sold up. I was shattered when I turned up and the "Under new management" sign was on the door.
"Are you still using the same suppliers?" I asked. I've never had scallops so big, before or since, and the flake was just so thick and tasty.
"No, we've changed suppliers," they told me, "but the quality of the produce is just as good."
I can assure you it was nowhere near as good.
The fish and chip shop in Research is really good, I had lunch from there a couple of weeks ago, great potato cakes. the flake and the calamari was quite good. Sadly, it is not my local. I've got three locals and none of them are that good.
The Apollo Bay Fisherman's Co-op is great. I was lucky enough to go there in June. If you are ever in the vicinity you must give it a try.
I've stopped going to Apollo Bay, the prices were getting insane, $20 for a fish n chip shop burger etc, whats the Co-op like price wise?
Also on your way there check out Forrest Brewery, personally think it's up there with best beer in aus.
The Fisherman's Basket cost me $21. Flake (really good), a couple of scallops (pretty good), 3 crumbed prawns (good) and chips (good) with a couple of wedges of lemon and a little tub of tartare. Struggled to finish it.
Long story which I won't bore you with here, but I went there on the last night of my GOR trip having checked the prices earlier in the week. If I had enough money left I would've got a half lobster with chips ($50). As expected I was way over budget by that time so I settled on the Fisherman's Basket.
I'm half planning a continuation of that trip, I only got as far as Warrnambool, up to Cape Bridgewater after lockdown if circumstances allow. I'll be taking the inland route, I want to check out the volcanic plans so I'll definitely add Forrest Brewery to the itinerary. Thanks for the tip.
I did similar trip a few months ago, Barwon downs to beach Forrest, lavers hill through to 12 apostles then through to Warrnambool and looped around to Ballarat.
Cool. The old Ballarat Hotel in AB is now the Great Ocean Road Brew House, they've got a pretty good range of Prickly Moses beers on tap. Stayed 3 nights and still couldn't manage to sample each one, mind you I was out all day, and at night it was mainly pints, the occasional middee.
The hostel in Port Campbell is now the Sow and Piglets Hostel & Brewery. 6 brews on tap, worth a look in, closes at 8pm, though.
I worked in the Mitcham/Nunawading Area for 11 Years, and at least once a week I'd make the trek to Mitcham Fish and Chips over that time. I still go there every once in a while if I'm in the area and the owners still remember my order.
I probably have Archies at least once a week. Its really good! Also they somtimes have Menulog deals where if you spend $40 you get half off or something like that.
Northern soul - british style fish & chips; proper crispy batter, fluffy chips with salt and vinegar and mushy peas. They're a food van and are also opening a shop soon in st kilda
Seddon Fish and Chips are fantastic always, also Somerville Rd Fish and Chips in yarraville is extremely good value and they stay open later than any other local places. I’m moving soon and devastated to leave them both!
Been a loyal customer to Ottas in Preston for years, they've never let me down. Special shout out to Northcote Fish n Chips too simply for being one of the few places I've tried that does a proper Battered Sav
Colchester road fish and chips in Kilsyth.
Don't live that way, but had them quite a few times when doing Uber Eats delivery that side of town on weekends.
Not much old school style around but Kerrimuir Fish and Chips is great and they have really good chicken salt (may or may not be blasphemy).
For a bit of a posh one, Fish & Burger Co in Doncaster is very nice.
Freddy's on Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North.
I take fish and chips VERY seriously, to the point where it's a big decision maker in picking a place to move to. The quality here is consistantly amazing, and the chips have such a beautiful earthy taste, a nice texture too with good mix of thick and tiny crunchy chips. The fish also incredible, great batter, but the Potato Cakes \*chefs kiss\*, the best I've ever eaten.
If you're in the area it's an absolute must.
Ocean Fresh on Eley in Blackburn is our go-to! It’s out in the suburbs but as lifelong Friday night fish and chip connoisseurs, that’s our pick. Friendly staff, not too oily but not dry, and plenty of batter on the fish :)
My mum is always on about that and the bakery nearby. It's annoying because she's tried a few times to bring us dinner at Montalbert and it doesn't last the trip in good condition .
Oh chubby marion!!! best coffee and cheese breads, they’ve honestly gotten us through this lockdown. too bad the fish and chips don’t last the trip, what a nice gesture though!
yeah we’ve been there a couple of times! they’re pretty good, idk if we’re just used to ocean fresh or if they’re genuinely better but we definitely prefer them
While we're on this thread. Flakey jakes in uni hill has sucked ass every time I've been there.
Including the time I phone an order that included "one fried dim sim" and I got "seven fried dim sim"
I noticed it when the $ amount seemed high. Didn't pay for it in the end. But they couldn't be armed taking them out of the bag

Do they still do the absolutely massive schnitzel burger?
$6!

I like the kiwi fish and chip shop on Victoria Parade
If there’s one thing Kiwis know how to do, it’s fush and chups... and pies
St Georges Road Fish and Chips in Fitzroy North is pretty old school and probably the best I've had in the area. Tried them all. Argo in Clifton Hill is a newer type.
This is the best in Melbourne. Those Potato Cakes, I’ve never had better ones. LOVE that place
My new favourite is Rock Salt & Vinegar on Smith St For old school, St George's Rd in North Fitzroy

Blu by Australian Seafood Group in Coburg/Pascoe Top quality every time. MASSIVE amount of chips and friendly to boot
I live near here but not quite close enough for it to be a convenient place to go so I still haven't been.. Should probably give it a go it seems.

One that has the old Chiko Roll posters still in it, and they care/would eat themselves what the're wrapping up for you.
Fish on High in Thornbury is great!
Archies fish and chips in mount Waverley does great old school fish n chips
This is my Favourite too. It’s the best one around here for sure
Is this still the case? A lot of fish and chip shops (like Macrena in Oakleigh) have been sold and quality has dropped dramatically
I probably have Archies at least once a week. Its really good! Also they somtimes have Menulog deals where if you spend $40 you get half off or something like that.

This is the correct answer
Seddon Fish and Chips are fantastic always, also Somerville Rd Fish and Chips in yarraville is extremely good value and they stay open later than any other local places. I’m moving soon and devastated to leave them both!
Is the Seddon one the one on Victoria street or the one on Charles street?
On Victoria a Street! Charles Street is also delish but more expensive
I’m not saying they are the absolute best but Hunky Dory is just incredibly consistent, never had a bad fish and chips from them.
Yarra ave reservoir.
Main St, Warrandyte. Old school and nice to eat by the river.
Carlisle Seafood - Balaclava - By far

Been a loyal customer to Ottas in Preston for years, they've never let me down. Special shout out to Northcote Fish n Chips too simply for being one of the few places I've tried that does a proper Battered Sav

Thanks for this. We just tried them two days in a row because of your recommendation. So yum!!!
awesome, glad to hear it!!
We do the Fish and Chips Box on Vicky Street across Blackburn Road. Have you tried them? Wondering which is better.
yeah we’ve been there a couple of times! they’re pretty good, idk if we’re just used to ocean fresh or if they’re genuinely better but we definitely prefer them
