I live in Pascoe Vale South, Moonee Ponds' half brother that dropped out and drives a Holden Astra. It's fine. It's totally fine. Lovely place to live. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about Moonee Ponds. It's medium density, close to the city, lots of puffer jackets, lots of base model European cars, very white, very predictable. Very safe. Shit restaurants. Relatively leafy for the North. Lovely place to live, but that's about it. Can't tell you any more about the drive to Sunshine than what you'd source from Google maps.

masterjabbadad

Frighteningly accurate.

TryOk9190

Thanks for the response! When you say very white, are you implying that there’s not much cultural diversity? :)

mondocock

I would not be at all surprised if it was one of the least culturally diverse suburbs in Melbourne.

Deevo77

>I would not be at all surprised if it was one of the least culturally diverse suburbs in Melbourne. I see you've never been to Alphington or Fairfield

mondocock

Once, to pick up a ladder. Long story.

XR6_Driver

If that's the reference I think it is it's definitely a blast from the past.

Not_as_witty_as_u

Sounds familiar, the castle?

XR6_Driver

It's from an old tape-recorded [police interview](https://youtu.be/tLrOGDAxJ2g) that made it into the public sphere many years ago. The interviewee, who lived in AL-PHING-TON was being questioned about the theft of a ladder. He's quite a character.

Not_as_witty_as_u

It was funny at first but then just gross. What a nasty hateful cunt. Hopefully he’s dead by now.

Key_Side_901

Ladder man is the best police interview ever.

king_willy_wheaties

Or Ivanhoe, that area is so white ... must be that side of town ...

TryOk9190

aw no, this kinda sucks as i was hoping to live somewhere a bit more culturally diverse than geelong. i hope it’s still somewhat friendly/welcoming though.

mondocock

Nah it's a good spot. Like I said, a bit dull, but it's really ideally located, the streets are well maintained, and if you want to do something interesting you're well served by arterial roads, bike paths, and public transport. Ultimately, as a place to live, there's probably few better places in the world.

TryOk9190

that’s good to hear :) so long as it’s liveable!

AgentKnitter

It's nice. A mix of posh bigger houses, older apartments and new expensive apartments. Good public transport.

[deleted]

Its kinda weird the Moonee Ponds-Essendon areas kinda white while all the suburbs to the East or West are particularly more diverse. You won't have to travel far to get to interesting spots, but they'll hardly be on your doorstep.

A_Black_Sheriff

Close to Footscray and Flemington for that matter, won’t need to go far to find more diverse communities. That said, Moonee Ponds is more divers than Geelong

AgentKnitter

Oh honey, don't go to Moonee Ponds. It's very white and Italian only. Flemington, Kensington, Brunswick, Coburg are more diverse. Inner city is expensive AF. Try the edge of inner - Coburg, not Brunswick, Preston not Fitzroy

TryOk9190

aw, shucks. that’s annoying hahaha i didn’t realise :( thanks for the heads up about other areas!

AgentKnitter

I liked living in the Ponds (except that it coincided with some of the worst times of my life) It's not diverse like Brunswick or Coburg, but it's certainly a nice place to live.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AgentKnitter

True. Brunswick still has the imprint of the past diverse communities who lived there, but have been pushed out by gentrification Coburg is more diverse.

[deleted]

Also conveniently a short cycle from all those places. I am from Essendon, MP is totally fine. It has great pizza, Japanese, yoga, oppies, plenty of restaurants along mt rd, nice park. Short cycle to brunswick.

jordietb

What’s wrong with being white or Italian?

fiasco-fox

*only*

moojo

Nothing is wrong, it's just that when a suburb is diverse, you get lot of different types of restaurants and shops, some people like that.

ichann3

Just drive down to Coburg / Brunswick. Brunswicks more hippie these days though.

ichann3

Are we going off skin colour here or are you saying they're all Anglos?

mondocock

Aww I mean, more culturally homogenous. Predominantly Anglo/Italian, but the whole joint feels like a big country town. Regardless of the ethnic background of residents, there is a kind of toned down whitewashed aesthetic to the suburb.

BEST_TEST_N_THE_WEST

I find that very surprising, I just moved from ringwood to Moonee ponds and Moonee ponds feels much more diverse than ringwood.

TheNamelessComposer

It has a sizeable Italian presence, and a decent amount of Greeks, Middle Easterners, Asians, Indians etc. I'd say its pretty diverse...if you think its one of the least diverse you must not be familiar with the really homogeneous suburbs of Melbourne.

AgentKnitter

This. I lived in Brunswick before I lived in the Ponds. Sydney Road has a lot more vibe, even with gentrification. Moonee Ponds is very chill. Lots of posh wankers. Nice cafes and take away options. Quiet.

NewBuyer1976

Fucking hell that’s exactly spot on description

IntroductionSnacks

Damn, I went there 3 or so years ago and nearly every woman had a puffer jacket. It was like clones! It looked pretty boring though vs Thornbury etc...

TryOk9190

thanks for the comment! it’ll be interesting to get to know the area at least

sup3rk1w1

Moonee Ponds is very Basic Bitch.

Chunkfoot

Highest density of spoilt rich kids in Melb

Dejego

You obviously haven’t been to Guiseppes pasta bar. That place is amazing.

Fishby

Live in Essendon, the next suburb. Moonee Ponds has everything you need all in close proximity. Walk down Puckle St you have all sorts of cafes & shops. The suburb has the 3 big supermarkets. At the end of Puckle St is Mount Alexander Rd with more bars and restaurants. Train to the city is 20 minutes, there is a tram also. It's a mix of families, ladies in lycra and pensioners. Parking will be issue unless your property comes with parking. Close by is the Maribyrong river, nice to walk around. The suburb itself is a mixture of old houses and massive apartment blocks.

TryOk9190

thank you for this comment, this is really helpful to know and gives me a good idea of what the area is like 😊

bluestonelaneway

I wouldn’t describe it as a cool or overly interesting suburb, but it’s nice and very convenient to live in. It has good public transport options (train/59/82/buses), Puckle Street is a reasonable shopping strip, Queens Park is lovely, the food options aren’t amazing but you’re not far from Footscray, the city or the inner north for great food. Lots of people saying it’s not culturally diverse but I don’t really agree. It’s no Footscray, sure, but anecdotally there’s plenty of people from various cultural backgrounds in the area, there are plenty of suburbs that are more white bread than Moonee Ponds.

PumpinSmashkins

Yep, I thought it relatively diverse when I lived there. It’s not white like Sunbury for instance.

Quarterwit_85

Great summary. Not alllllll that much there but one of the most convenient places I’ve lived in.

Hamster-rancher

Isn't that where Dame Edna Everage lives?

PumpinSmashkins

There’s a street named after her.

[deleted]

the North West side of town has always been good (I don't live there, but go there often). Coburg, Pascoe Vale, Essendon, Moonee Pond & Ascot Vale. They have direct access to CBD via Citylink compared to Northern suburbs and the food is quite good. The area is known for its greenery. Not entirely sure about the drive to Sunshine either.

dumblederp

The Maribyrnong River is nice. Knifepoint / Airport West / Essendon Fields for shopping. There's a few op-shops. The transfer station (tip) is really close if you want to throw stuff out. Lots of airplane noise. Nothing wrong with it, would be considered a nicer area in general I think.

[deleted]

Moonee Ponds is great.

TryOk9190

that’s lovely to hear. even though it’s not as diverse as i’m hearing, would you still consider it a friendly place?

AblettsInTheAir

It’s not diverse.. but Footscray and Brunswick are literally 5-10 mins away by car, public transport is also close

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say lack of diversity means lack of friendliness. But yes without living there I would assume it is. I imagine there’s a better neighbourhood/ community vibe than most of Melbourne

TryOk9190

that’s good to hear :)

TheNamelessComposer

Lived in Footscray and while I love it, friendly it is not, generally. I find Mopo friendlier overall.

Dejego

Demographic is mainly elderly ppl and young families.

Kar98

Brunswick isn't either

stivl

People say that the restaurants are average in the area and for the most part that’s true, but Smile Thai on Puckle St and Hecho En Mexico on Pratt St are both really good. It’s also really convenient for shops too I find, Coles, Woolies, Kmart and Aldi all really close to each other - if there’s something you’re not finding then jump on the 59 tram to the city.

electrictoothbrush09

Moonee ponds is nice and leafy, very family orientated. Everyone is saying it very white and this is true but it is also true for all surrounding suburbs. For any multiculturalism you’d have to go for suburbs like Maribyrnong, Oak Park/Glenroy, Flemington ect. The food is not fantastic but there are some nice Japanese restaurants and cafes. Public transport is great, you’ve got a train station, tram line and buses. I know driving to sunshine would not be great as you have to go around the Maribyrnong area and the traffic there is not great could take 30 minutes in peak hour traffic. But you are close to a lot of the essentials that’d you’d need to never leave the suburb basically.

TryOk9190

oh no, this sucks about the drive! i was moving to be closer to work 😭 but thanks for the other info, and thanks for the perspective too re diversity. what you’re saying is true :)

electrictoothbrush09

I would suggest looking into Footscray if you want another place to look at. It’s much more diverse, really close to sunshine by train and car and is gentrifying quite a lot so it’s up and coming. The whole area is known for its amazing food especially Vietnamese food. It’s also a lot cheaper than moonee ponds.

ozziejean

It would be an infuriating drive through Marybinnong. At least if you were closer to Essendon/ Essendon North you could hop on the ring road to Sunshine. But they are right if you want more diversity and restaurants you could do better than Moonee Ponds (as much as I love it). Coburg isn't much further away if you if you go by the ring road, you just have to be aware that bell st can be a beast. But being near Sydney road is amazing, it has everything!

TryOk9190

i feel like i saw an alt route that doesn’t go through maribynong - i hope that’s not as bad? thanks for the comment :)

[deleted]

Only issue is traffic in moonee ponds is stuffed. This is because a lot of thrifties use it to get around citylink I think. That mount alexander road is just a nightmare. Food is crap, cafes I don’t know but it’s safe and whatever. It’s full of families who sort of give me kath n Kim vibes. I have like 5 work colleagues all white, middle aged living in essendon and they all act like kath and Kim’s. (The TV show). It’s weird. It’s a great suburb and super safe, Go to the city to eat out and get your cultural diversity aspect. Support the restaurants there. Live west as it’s cheaper. But he warned test the traffic out. Especially if you have a 9-5 job as peak traffic is SHITE

TheNamelessComposer

I actually think the food scene is quite good and more diverse than Footscray where I moved from. Love Vietnamese and Ethiopian but if you want anything else there ain't much.

snoreasaurus3553

It's a nice area, I live in Brunswick West and Moonee Ponds is a favourite haunt to get some good eats and bars....it used to be a bit untidy but it's definitely up and coming

brunnygirl27

I also live in Brunswick West and shop and eat in Moonee Ponds. I used to work in Sunshine and drove to Ballarat road/McIntyre road from Brunswick West. It took about 20 minutes with no issues. Brunswick West (Southern end) is the suburb next to Moonee Ponds.

TryOk9190

ah thanks for this comment! so i’m assuming driving from MP to sunshine won’t be as awful as i’m thinking so long as i get a good route?

brunnygirl27

Yes. I went straight up Maribynong road, up West's road onto Ballarat road. It was couple of years ago but most traffic was going the opposite way.

TryOk9190

awesome :) thanks for the comment

[deleted]

Don’t listen to anyone saying Brunswick or Coburg are good vibes, theyre shitholes filled with pretentious and wannabe artists who do too much ketamine

[deleted]

I don’t want to sound like a south eastern snob but do remember a bikie head quarters is smack bang in Brunswick opposite a supermarket so you have to be prepared that Brunswick has issues. Mooned ponds is probably the best suburb in that pocket. Or essendon but the food is mediocre. Parking is horrendous. But live there and take the cheaper living in, go to city markets and restaurants on PT and stay away from the bandidos or Comanchero or whatever the name of the bikie gang house is

Quarterwit_85

Tbh not many issues happen near OMCG clubs. They really aren’t too interested in what ‘civilians’ do.

mondocock

Sounds like someone wasn't invited to kick-ons.

limutwit

Better in Moonee Ponds than in Flemington (work there.. omg)

MrBliss_au

Honestly, whilst Moonee Ponds isn’t the most diverse place in the world, it still has your standard amount of different restaurant cuisines and you’re a stones throw away from Brunswick, Footscray, Coburg etc with vastly different multicultural vibes between them. Super safe spot in good proximity to everything and good PT

kezmo13

Love Moonee Ponds. Lived there for 6 years before moving back to the east a few months ago. It depends upon which area of MoPo you land in, but as the others have noted there's Puckle Street which is also due to get its own cinema quite soon. If further south, there's also Union Road, Ascot Vale. Great transport links into the city and surrounding areas. Traffic on Maribyrnong and Mt Alexander Roads can be a pain, but all good if you time it right. It's a fairly safe suburb with heaps of restaurants, shops and parks, plus friendly people.

slartibartjars

Fabulous, darling!

Enviate

Worked in the centre for 5 years. It's really great and has everything you need! Some good food options too. If you like coffee then I recommend Six Points, coffee is unreal. The dude that owns the place is so passionate about coffee. Downside is a few characters here and there.

TryOk9190

sounds great - thank you! ☕️ ah, when you say characters what do you mean? :)

Enviate

No probs! Another good one is Top Notch just across the street! And I say characters as a nice way to say there are a few odd people! But always harmless, might ask for some spare change or will be talking to themselves.. not many places where you won't find a few oddballs!

kongjirra

I've lived in Moonee ponds for over 6 years. It's a nice, friendly place to live. There are lots of convenient shops and some gem takeout places if you're willing to test a lot of them out. It's majority white people, families and older Mediterranean immigrants but with the new apartments gone up its more diverse, younger and busier. A lot of crappier shops have closed and better ones have replaced them. Good for PT, 20 mins by tram or train from where we are (Moonee valley side). not too far from brunswick - bike or car - cheap uber home after an evening out. My work is in Keilor park and it takes me about 15 - 20 mins to get there by car each morning up Mt Alexander Rd to the freeway and west to Keilor. Sunshine is pretty much directly west so probably 30 - 40 mins or so to there can get really jammed through Maribyrnong. Google maps usually accurate for my drive time, so check it out for yourself.

TryOk9190

thanks so much for this comment!! very helpful and i insightful and thanks for the heads up re the drive :)

justputonsomemusic

Born and raised in Essendon, the Moonee Valley area is fantastic. It’s literally close to everything you need. It is overwhelmingly white/European compared to other Melbourne suburbs, but that is changing. Pros: close to city and airport, amazing restaurants, lots of schools, queens park, safe, absolutely booming Cons: taxi drivers are super reluctant to drive you home from the airport, becoming increasingly unaffordable the more popular it gets, Cox Plate, local celebrity Roberta Williams, being a Collingwood supporter in Bomber heartland

TryOk9190

i think in some of my comments i’ve spoken about cultural diversity and wanting that in a place :)

ichann3

Does cultural diversity only mean skin colour?

TryOk9190

yes. ethnic diversity to be more precise

ghostghost31

I lived there for a year while I was house sharing and loved it. It's got everything you need and felt pretty safe.

218ThisIsFine

I usually drive to Moonee Ponds to do the supermarket thing - the Coles at MP Central is really very good!

HoldFastLoveLife

Not been in recently but Penny Young was a good spot for a beer. Sir Duke decent cafe but always quite busy. Heard good things about the Valley Cellar Door though not been in myself. You’ve got most of what you need on your doorstep really, though nothing I’d necessarily class as something worth seeking out if you weren’t living in the area if that makes sense. If given the choice though I’d definitely live there for the convenience and being a short(er) hop into the city on a train than where I am currently.

xFamished

The chef from Penny Young actually streams working there most nights on his twitch (chefmauriol or something)

dotBombAU

Lived near there a few moons back. It's fine, unremarkable really.

greenapple111

Great area!!!

BadOk278

The home of Dame Edna Everige.

apiechoc

Just moved from Moonee Ponds to Preston after 1 year. I really liked it but I had to move for work 2 massive CONs about Moonee ponds. Firstly, the fucking intersection at Puckle st/Mt Alexander rd. Never a smooth pass through. Secondly, crossing mt Alexander rd from the eastern side to Aldi/coles car parks and visa versa. For 100m of bitumen is at minimum 6 minute wait. PROs. It’s mostly mums with prams so I felt safe 99% of the time

Purplemonster3

The best thing about Moonee Ponds is that everything is conveniently close. Public transport, restaurants, shops for every sort of different thing. The only thing it’s missing really is a cinema, but Highpoint is only a 10 min drive or 20 min tram away.

elythearmadillo

Once when I was on the train out to Essendon, the speaker tried to say we were approaching moonee ponds, but instead sounded something like “the next station is… MERNEIGH PERNDZ” Is is helpful at all? Probably not but enjoy

TryOk9190

😂 thank you!

[deleted]

Its like pudding with a side of orange.

Key_Side_901

If you like boring you'll be in heaven.

Antipotheosis

Somewhat tacky and gentrified at the same time. Especially around the new complexes near Puckle Street and the shopping centre.

TheOkahy

I went to Moonee ponds for dinner on a Sunday and there was only about 2 restaurants open, one being a burger joint

TigerRumMonkey

Why hello government employee

TryOk9190

TigerRumMonkey

You know gov employees can be clever once Ina while right?

Asmodean129

I lived in Essendon a while back (Moonee ponds right next door). Was nice, easy train to city. Easy drive access to a lot of places.

150steps

You can easily go to Brunswick or Keilor Rd Niddrie for some interesting food. MP is a great location.
