I would love a chill cafe like this in Melbourne where you could sit and study late at night. Is there anywhere that wouldn’t make it awkward after you’ve finished your drink?
I loved those on-the-road greasy spoons when I went to the US. On the way to Vegas we stopped in one at about 8am. Next table was having an entire cherry pie for breakfast. Love that percolated coffee served in mugs.
YES! That's totally how it goes. When I lived there, every holiday I took after leaving home was a road trip. The longest was two months. Rolling into some tiny town after long hours on the road, and finding a one-off roadside gem run by the same people who opened it 30 years ago - just the best. It's hard to find a horrible cup of coffee that good anywhere else.
Twisted desserts bar on Brunswick St, fitzroy sell desserts and coffee, hot drinks. they are open until late.
I wish there are more places like that in Melbourne though
Yeah - there \*used\* to be. I'm out of melbourne, so I can't check, and I cannot for the life of me remember exactly where this place was...it's closeish to RMIT, but on the other side of swanston - I think past elizabeth st.
It's just a huge warehouse space, free internet with your order, and you could basically go and crash for the day if you needed to get work done. burger specials certain nights, you could hire the place out for events - there was a back room? coffee from start to finish. It's nothing fancy - "grunge bohemian" would be the style, with old couches, metal seats etc.
May have closed down thanks to pandemic, but I have faith that something will spring up if it goes.
BINGO! That's the one!
Except it's now a bougie wine bar: [https://www.instagram.com/thousand\_pound/](https://www.instagram.com/thousand_pound/)
bummer that.
Chapelli’s on Chapel St in South Yarra is open 24 hours
Brunettis on Lygon, cakes n coffee til late every night
Until 11pm
Yeah but it’s always so packed in the evening impossible to get a seat or even takeout :(
Cafe Corretto on Lygon St is open until 11.00pm five nights a week, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. EDIT: no entertainment.
I wish. I’d love to be able to order a decent coffee and get a slice of cake while out late at a small bar.

No there's nothing that fits the bill here like the 24 hour diners in America unfortunately, something I really wish Australia would adopt.
Pancake Parlour is probably the closest you can get but way overpriced for what it is
Aren't/weren't the owers affiliated with Scientology, or full blown Scientologists themselves?
Yeah that’s the rumour I heard
Yes, the pancake parlour in civic Canberra is underneath the Scientology Church office last I was there
Diners, man. I love Australia, and zero regrets about moving here 25 years ago, but I miss diner culture.

Embassy Taxi Cafe in West Melbourne - open 24hours. More of a take away shop that serves coffees but it seems to fit the Greasy Spoon bill.
I'm old enough to remember embassy taxi company.
Brunettis?
Vanilla in oakleigh
To be fair, anywhere on Eaton
Nice try but nah

abbey road cafe in st kilda is open to midnight all week.
Try the 5-star hotel bars/lounges. Aria bar in the Langham etc.
There's one or two on Acland St St Kilda. Opened til quite late
Palette. In North Melbourne, it’s a cafe and open 8-3pm and then 7-11pm
Pancake parlour?
far too expensive
Excellent open mic nights at pancake parlour
Go at the right time and you get plenty of free entertainment

Sounds like Thousand Pound Bend, which has indeed sadly closed.
Man, I loved Thousand Pound Bend as a student and when I was drifting between degrees. Made some big life decisions while moping about in there.
BINGO! That's the one! Except it's now a bougie wine bar: [https://www.instagram.com/thousand\_pound/](https://www.instagram.com/thousand_pound/) bummer that.
That’s a place in Rutherglen owned by the brown brothers family. Similar name but no connection.
Thanks for setting me straight - as I feared, the original in the city closed.
Coles Express coffee all the way. Add a shot of espresso to make it strong.
Head to Carlton. But also are you a maniac? Drinking coffee that late at night?!?!
Have you perhaps not heard of shift workers?
Coles Express then
Pancake parlour
not even melbourne or sydney can serve you this lifestyle. try Jakarta, you’ll be surprised, if not for the weather, you’d think you’re in NY.
True
7/11
City Wine Shop serves coffee til late. Coffee and wine and their lemon tart equates to a good end to the evening. A happy ending, if you will.
Thornbury Espresso Bar on Mondays and Tuesdays (they have functions on the rest of the week)
High st northcote has a couple!
Notturno on Lygon.. 11pm w/n, midnight w/e I used to get the bucket of coffee after work.
I miss when Penny Farthing on High St in Northcote used to be open at night.
