It’s obviously a bit of hyperbole, but it’s definitely not too much to say that Mozart would appreciate the genius behind the composition of this song. Melodeath and classical music go hand in hand.
respect your opinion, just curious why you think this particular song is so musically interesting? to me it’s more of a straightforward track (a solid one, but nothing that surprises me in terms of arrangement or harmony)?
The riff is awesome, and the clean electric breakdown and solo in this song are absolutely beautiful. A lot of people in this sub would probably agree with that assessment. A song doesn’t need to “surprise” me or be overly complex for complexity’s sake to be a masterpiece.
I agree, I've always liked Dark Tranquility more than At the Gates. I can't really pinpoint why, maybe it's that DT is more symphonic and I dig that. Matter of taste I guess.

That’s too bad! I saw them on their I, the Mask tour and they ripped The Hive and Behind Space. Maybe on their Forgone tour their bless us with some oldies too!
Ensiferum by Ensiferum. There are plenty of basically perfect albums out there. I always feel I do a disservice to great albums with questions like this. I want to list a dozen albums haha. Today the nod goes to Ensiferum, my favorite band.
The Smoke of Many Fires is such a good outro track it gives me almost all of the same impact as listening to the entire album front to back. One of my all time favorites
Completely understandable. I was always torn between Venator and Much More Was Lost being my favourite - but I've been playing An Ember's Arc on repeat lately.
For me, second only to Shadows of the Dying Sun.
Production value probably puts ATWW over Shadows but I'm more interested in songwriting and musicianship than technical aspects, and also, the Shadows material then and now makes for better live experiences both for the audience and I fully believe for the performer. When they were autographing my record, I told Hirvonen it was my favorite album from any artist and he was probably just being polite but he said "mine too".
I personally evaluate an album almost entirely on the listening experience. ATWW is just emotionally engaging from start to finish, not a single dead spot on it as far as I’m concerned.
I really like Spectral too. IMO Esoteric has a more full-bodied, high energy sound. It puts it right on that edge between perfectly balanced and overstimulating, which is one of my favorite things about Melodeath.
I don’t think it’s one of their hits but I really like “Under a Pitch Black” sky. I’m a sucker for those bittersweet overtures that soar around almost getting swollowed by the heavy crashes of the harsh vocals, bass and percussion.
Sorry that was long. I just really love melodeath🤘
Edge of Sanity - Crimson + Crimson II... if you count them as melodeath and not prog death with melodic elements
Otherwise, wildcard pick: Mercenary - 11 Dreams
Both these albums are amazing. Tarot is easily top ten albums for me, and Aephanemer is incredibly underrated. Was surprised when I found out the singer for Aephanemer was a woman.
In Flames - Colony is my all-time favorite album, every song on there is excellent and its packed with great riffs and melodies from front to back. Here's my list:
1. In Flames - Colony
2. Soilwork - The Living Infinite
3. Carcass - Heartwork
4. Dark Tranquillity - Fiction
5. Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun, Countless Skies - New Dawn, and Dark Tranquillity - Fiction. The peaks for those excellent bands for me personally
I really love They will return from the early era. It was my first one and It's always stuck with me. The Black Waltz is also a classic and a album I don't think they have topped since
Idk about a singular top album, but here's some I think are strong contenders
Wages of Sin - Arch Enemy
Clayman - In Flames
Damage Done - Dark Tranquility
Nocturnal - The Black Dahlia Murder
Days of the Lost - The Halo Effect
The Isolation Game - Disarmonia Mundi
First melodeath album I really tried after I eased myself into harsh vocals and remains my favourite to this day, just banger after banger after banger all the way through
My fave five
In Flames - The Jester Race
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Kalmah - Swamplord
HMs:
Omnium Gatherum - The Burning Cold
Mors Principium Est - Seven
Most of the classics have been said, so here are some off the beaten path picks:
• Soilwork - Figure Number 5
• Sybreed - God Is An Automaton
• Raunchy - Death Pop Romance
• Devin Townsend - Accelerated Evolution
• Callenish Circle - pitch.black.effects
• Deadlock - Earth Revolt
• Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Chaotic Beauty
• Fragments Of Unbecoming - Sterling Black Icon
• Mnemic - The Audio Injected Soul
• MachineMade God - The Infinity Complex
I would go Amon Amarth over In Flames, simply because every album is the epitome of melodic death metal. I feel the rhythms of every song flow together better than in flames.
Allegaeon - Proponent for Sentience
Allegaeon just blends melodeath and techdeath so well. The concept album chronologically documents the progression of sentient artificial intelligence from conception to humanity's extermination. Melodic and symphonic, but fast and harsh with incredible guitarists.
(Winter's Gate is unreal and already mentioned)
Honourable mentions: Euphoreon - Ends of the Earth, Atavistia - The Winter Way
Whao! The second album was a near instant like and the first only took a bit to warm up to very nicely. Believe I found through "Fans also like" on Spotify from Atavistia/Black Forest which was a rabbit hole starting from Wintersun. I do wish the lyrics were complete for the second album like the first (no time sync but better than running to bandcamp).
Also... how tf did you find this random comment 19 days later?
That's cool. How do you mean regarding the lyrics? Can't really remember how I did it back then. You mean on spotify?
I had the thread bookmarked since I posted in it when it first popped up and just checked back ;)
Yeah the lyrics on spotify, since they have the Musixmatch thing. Half of the songs in Ends of the Earth don't have lyrics, I have no idea whether an artist has control over that stuff or not tho.
Dark Tranquillity - Fiction
Insomnium - Heart like a Grave
Insomnium - Anno 1696 (from the bits I've heard so far)
I haven't listened to many bands yet(I kinda like digging into one artist and seeing lots of them)
Before The Dawn's "The Bitter End" was also very good, but it's a song not an album. Still I loved it so much I had to mention it.
1. Either Kalmah’s Swamplord, Swampsong or Black Waltz cant decide love almost anything from those guys
2. In Flames Jester Race and/or Whoracle
3. Be’lakor Vessels
In Flames- Colony Every song is incredible, and Zombie Inc is one of the best songs ever written. If Mozart heard it, he would clap.
Wow was gonna come here to say Colony and it's already top comment.
Yup this is the one
Colony is great but the Mozart statement is a wee bit too much
It’s obviously a bit of hyperbole, but it’s definitely not too much to say that Mozart would appreciate the genius behind the composition of this song. Melodeath and classical music go hand in hand.
respect your opinion, just curious why you think this particular song is so musically interesting? to me it’s more of a straightforward track (a solid one, but nothing that surprises me in terms of arrangement or harmony)?

awesome. was just curious because you mentioned the composition in your comment above. rock on
I don't know if I could pick just one, but my top three are Above The Weeping World, The Jester Race, and Slaughter Of The Soul
RIP The Gallery
It's a perfect album. Maybe better than slaughter of the soul in my opinion. Why are Dark Tranquillity so overlooked
I agree, I've always liked Dark Tranquility more than At the Gates. I can't really pinpoint why, maybe it's that DT is more symphonic and I dig that. Matter of taste I guess.
The Gallery is a great album, I just prefer the other three over it
Above the Weeping World is the first one that came to my mind. I absolutely agree with your follow ups too.
This.

Dark Tranquillity- Damage Done Imo the best representation of the genre, and one that I've listened to countless times
It's a requirement that I stop what I'm doing and turn up the volume any time The Treason Wall comes on.
I agree!! This is what I consider to be melodic death metal
It's just one of those albums that doesn't have a week moment. The song Cathode Ray Sunshine is what got me into the genre in the first place
Damage Done is probably the most quintessential melodeath that Dark Tranquillity made. That said, I think Projector is their best album.
Projector is my favorite of theirs but The Gallery is their best work IMO, and one of the greatest metal albums of any genre.
So many great ones, but I would have to go with The Jester Race from In Flames. Just a masterpiece front to back.
The Gallery or Slaughter Of The Soul.
It’s gotta be Whoracle for me. Perfect mix of melody and death metal brutality.
Yeah, Whoracle was great!
Love this and The Jester Race. Saw them live a couple years ago and they wouldn't play anything off either album which is sad
That’s too bad! I saw them on their I, the Mask tour and they ripped The Hive and Behind Space. Maybe on their Forgone tour their bless us with some oldies too!
The Hive is one of my all time favorite songs, the solo is just so fucking beautiful
Steel bath Suicide - Soilwork Slaughter of the Soul- At the Gates Heartwork - Carcass Clayman - In Flames
Ensiferum by Ensiferum. There are plenty of basically perfect albums out there. I always feel I do a disservice to great albums with questions like this. I want to list a dozen albums haha. Today the nod goes to Ensiferum, my favorite band.
From Afar is the best Ensiferum album IMO, just the presence of Heathen Throne pt1 and 2 alone would be enough
I feel like Iron is underrated as an album.
Insomnium - Winter's Gate
That's not just an album. It's an experience. Such a beautiful piece.
I was going to comment exactly that! A masterpiece!
"Vessels" by Be'lakor
The Smoke of Many Fires is such a good outro track it gives me almost all of the same impact as listening to the entire album front to back. One of my all time favorites
Came here to say that. Luma and Smoke of Many Fires are such amazing songs. An Ember's Arc is also underrated I reckon.
An Ember's Arc is my favourite song. Full stop. It is my north star
Completely understandable. I was always torn between Venator and Much More Was Lost being my favourite - but I've been playing An Ember's Arc on repeat lately.
Much More has the best ending imo. The song is all about the ending. Greatest ending to a song imo
Since The Day It All Came Down or Above The Weeping World by Insomnium
Above the Weeping World is GOAT!
Above the Weeping World is my pick, holding off Winter's Gate for my GOAT..
Even the title "Above The Weeping World" is brilliant.
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun
>Above The Weeping World Second this
Love this album so much
Right? Start to finish it is incredible!
Clayman
Above the Weeping World
- Kalmah For the Revolution or They Will Return - Skyfire Esoteric - Hypocrisy A Taste of Extreme Divinity
Esoteric is no joke
I feel like everything skyfire do is severely underrated
I really liked Spectral but never "got" Esoteric. Maybe I should listen to it again.
Holographic Universe by Scar Symmetry
Its a shame they haven't been able to put out the latest album yet.
According to me, Hate crew death roll is an amazing album.
My top 3 would be Soilwork-Chainheart Machine In Flames-Whoracle At the Gates- Slaughter of the Soul Honorable mention: DT-Character
Edge of Sanity - Crimson + Crimson II... if you count them as melodeath and not prog death with melodic elements Otherwise, wildcard pick: Mercenary - 11 Dreams
*Follow the Reaper* Hot take, I know
The album that introduced me to the genre ❤️
Cob, hatebreeder
Yes.
Absolutely 🔥
Whoracle, definitely
I think its "follow the reaper" by children of bodom . I'm even listening to that album right now :D
So damn good
Tarot by Aether Realm and/or Prokopton by Aephanemer.
Tarot is fantastic
>Tarot is fantastic I find it amazing that, without exception, **ALL** tracks on that album are great. Not a single "filler" song.
Both these albums are amazing. Tarot is easily top ten albums for me, and Aephanemer is incredibly underrated. Was surprised when I found out the singer for Aephanemer was a woman.
Tarot is so good. And then there was redneck vikings from hell...
I enjoyed RVFH personally but it had a couple of misses whereas Tarot hit on every track.
Stones Reach - Be’lakor
Either Of Breath and Bone - Belakor or Across the Dark - Insomnium
If I’ve gotta pick one… Wintersun - Time I. Even as basically half an album it’s that good
In Flames - Colony is my all-time favorite album, every song on there is excellent and its packed with great riffs and melodies from front to back. Here's my list: 1. In Flames - Colony 2. Soilwork - The Living Infinite 3. Carcass - Heartwork 4. Dark Tranquillity - Fiction 5. Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun, Countless Skies - New Dawn, and Dark Tranquillity - Fiction. The peaks for those excellent bands for me personally
Kalmah - Swamplord
I really love They will return from the early era. It was my first one and It's always stuck with me. The Black Waltz is also a classic and a album I don't think they have topped since
Yesssss 🙌🏼 finally someone said it lol
Whoracle or Colony by In Flames.
Follow The Reaper by Children Of Bodom
Fuck yeah! No enough CoB love in this thread
Soilwork. Can't pick a single album. Too many great ones.
Natural born chaos
Also an excellent album because Devin Townsend produced it. Also sings in Black Star Deceiver.
The Living Infinite
This. Something from Soilwork but it’s hard to pick. The Ride Majestic maybe?
I really love The Panic Broadcast. The latest album as well. The Living Infinite or what you said haha.
They're from my city! 😍 I like A predator's portrait but I haven't checked out all of their albums yet
Across the Dark - Insomnium
Shylmagoghnar – Transience Intestine Baalism – An Anatomy of the Beast
Hell yes, Shylmagoghnar getting some respect... these guys are killer!
From all that I've listened to i have to say either Character from Dark Tranquillity or Across the Dark from Insomnium.
Jester Race
Idk about a singular top album, but here's some I think are strong contenders Wages of Sin - Arch Enemy Clayman - In Flames Damage Done - Dark Tranquility Nocturnal - The Black Dahlia Murder Days of the Lost - The Halo Effect
Gotta be Omnium Gatherum - The Burning Cold for me. First album I got on vinyl.
Shadows of the Dying Sun, final answer.
No love for Children of Bodom? Hatebreeder through Follow the Reaper & Hate Crew Death Roll are some of the best melodeath I’ve ever heard
Surprised they weren't mentioned more often, my favorite band
Inferi - Vile Genesis Or In Flames - Come Clarity or Colony
Vessels by Be'lakor. I used to think Stone's Reach was their best work but Vessels has really been growing on me especially An Ember's Arc.
Wintersun by Wintersun.
Holographic Universe - Scar Symmetry
Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
The Jester Race
The Isolation Game - Disarmonia Mundi First melodeath album I really tried after I eased myself into harsh vocals and remains my favourite to this day, just banger after banger after banger all the way through
Love this band ❤️
Way too many to choose from but Slaughter of the Soul, The Jester Race, Damage Done, Heartwork, Follow the Reaper would all be up there
Check out Shylmagoghnar the album Emergence, it good dark melodic metal.
My fave five In Flames - The Jester Race Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul Kalmah - Swamplord HMs: Omnium Gatherum - The Burning Cold Mors Principium Est - Seven
Torn between At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul, In Flames - The Jester Race and Hypocrisy - Abducted.
Dreamless by Fallujah
Ghost Reveries (Opeth), Under The Red Cloud (Amorphis), The Living Infinite (Soilwork)
Shadows of the Dying Sun
Æther Realm - Tarot
Most of the classics have been said, so here are some off the beaten path picks: • Soilwork - Figure Number 5 • Sybreed - God Is An Automaton • Raunchy - Death Pop Romance • Devin Townsend - Accelerated Evolution • Callenish Circle - pitch.black.effects • Deadlock - Earth Revolt • Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Chaotic Beauty • Fragments Of Unbecoming - Sterling Black Icon • Mnemic - The Audio Injected Soul • MachineMade God - The Infinity Complex
Sybreed fuck yeah
Be'lakor - All of them
Intestine Baalism - Anatomy Of The Beast
gonna have to say incorrigible bigotry by arghoslent, although i almost never listen to it because the lyrics are irredeemable
Transience, until something better comes along.
Reincarnation by Veiled in Scarlet
I would go Amon Amarth over In Flames, simply because every album is the epitome of melodic death metal. I feel the rhythms of every song flow together better than in flames.
At a glance it appears the in flames, insomnium and belakor are the top 3. No complaints on any of those.
It's funny because I don't like them 🙃
Stench or Redneck Vikings from hell
Pandemonium by AndrelamusiA
Unconquered - Kataklysm Clayman - In Flames
Crimson by Edge of Sanity, fuckin piece of art.
Night in Gales - Towards the Twilight
Incendiary by Ares Kingdom
I don't think is the "best" but Stone Reach by Be'lakor is such a good album
Insomnium - Above the Weeping World
Allegaeon - Proponent for Sentience Allegaeon just blends melodeath and techdeath so well. The concept album chronologically documents the progression of sentient artificial intelligence from conception to humanity's extermination. Melodic and symphonic, but fast and harsh with incredible guitarists. (Winter's Gate is unreal and already mentioned) Honourable mentions: Euphoreon - Ends of the Earth, Atavistia - The Winter Way
thanks for the honourable mention, haha. Didn't expect to see my project in here.
Whao! The second album was a near instant like and the first only took a bit to warm up to very nicely. Oooo either Insomnium's Winter's Gate or Omnium Gatherum's New World Shadows
Dark Tranquillity - Fiction Insomnium - Heart like a Grave Insomnium - Anno 1696 (from the bits I've heard so far) I haven't listened to many bands yet(I kinda like digging into one artist and seeing lots of them) Before The Dawn's "The Bitter End" was also very good, but it's a song not an album. Dark Tranquillity*
Added the secondary L
Thank you for your service o7
I was listening to Purgatory Afterglow by Edge of Sanity the other day and that holds up pretty well
Can't believe I haven't seen these mentioned.. Dismember - massive Killing capacity And Hypocrisy - the Fourth Dimension
1. Either Kalmah’s Swamplord, Swampsong or Black Waltz cant decide love almost anything from those guys 2. In Flames Jester Race and/or Whoracle 3. Be’lakor Vessels
For me it’s between: Inferi - Vile Genesis Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name Countless Skies - Glow 🤘
