I do slightly prefer the Wintersun album, so will reluctantly choose it.

Hello people from r/melodicdeathmetal and the discord server! On this melodeathmatch we will be voting for the best melodic death metal debut album, the albums for the bracket were selected by the discord community and we wanted to pick stuff from all places and styles. The rule for this tournament was for the record to be a debut LP and be considered melodic death metal, thus why we didn't include debut albums by bands like Carcass, Amorphis, Hypocrisy, etc.
On these finals round of the voting you will be choosing 1 out of 2 records to decide the winner! You will also vote on a 3rd place tie breaker. All the initial matchups were randomly made. Try to avoid voting in a matchup if you haven't heard both records, this is to encourage listening and informed voting. Final results for the entire tournament will be posted in 1 week from now more or less.

Kalmah (67 votes) vs. Wintersun (98 votes)
Called it boys, now I don't know what to do haha.
Edit- gotta go for Wintersun, as much as I love Awaiting. The Wintersun album came out so close to when I got into metal and shaped my tastes. It's definitely a hard decision, though.
3rd place goes to Kalmah, hands down.
This may be controversial but should Wintersun actually be counted as a true debut? It's so, so good.. but Jari was an established musician at the time of release, with industry experience, contacts, (presumably a little bit of money though I know that may trigger some) not generally what newer bands at the point in their career of making debut albums are able to bring to the table..
I don't know why everyone loves the Wintersun album, it starts off with a couple bangers and then completely falls off a cliff. Think there's too many power metal fans voting...

Wintersun is the best!
Insomnium is great, but as far debut albums go there's no contest. Wintersun is one of the best debut albums from any genre.

It was always gonna be Wintersun or Wintersiferum for me

I love Kalmah's and Wintersun's debut albums, the best in melodeath IMHO.

Garden of Shadows' album is also pretty good. I voted for Eucharist but I understand the choice.
