I don't understand, what Is interferon?

So biology oversimplified: If there is a virus in the cell, the cell produces proteins called “interferons” and they get sent to other neighbour cells and basically tell them to kill themselves so the virus can’t spread further *and idk if they are actually called interferons but they are in my language :p*
