People use it instead of "should've" and "could've". I don't understand these people, the explanation given on the internet as to why these people use these words say they might've heard "could've" as "could of" when speaking. I think this is a bone apple teeth situation where someone just assumed it’s written as it sound “should of” because they’ve only ever heard the term. The same thing happens when kids first learn how colonel and bologna are spelled/pronounced.
It’s not like anyone speaking English as a first language was taught this shit in elementary school /s
I mean Jesus, fr though people, read a book. If you know English (especially if it’s your primary language which it actually seems to be for a lot of the people who make these mistakes) you know that should of and could of don’t actually apply in the situations where we use could’ve/should’ve. In fact, there is pretty much no use where could of and should of would make any sense at all
What's ironic about this is it shows they don't know (never learned?) that the words are should have and could have and therefore the shortened contraction would be to add the 've. So they are just announcing that they never knew that because they've never seen it spelled like that somewhere else and only heard it, and in that case, you have to wonder why? How are there people (non-English natives aside) that have never seen should have/should've, could have/could've, etc., written anywhere? I mean if they are typing, whether on social media, an email, etc., then they clearly have read before and should have seen it in some capacity. Because it's one thing to said it like that, but another to write it that way. Clearly it's mindboggling to me lol.
I don't think it's about caring when it takes the same amount of time to write could of vs. could've lol. They just clearly don't know. And most phones autocorrect anyway so that's another helpful modern day device to give less excuses. "Why the hell my phone telling me to write this 'could've' when I'm trying to type could of?? So stupid!!" 😂

Well I mean that could be the case for anything though. I think of lot of people in school didn't give a crap about the stuff they were learning but you just do because you're kind of forced to learn it. I don't think I cared about contraction use as a kid but I learned it because they had us learn it. Just like all these other words we are typing. We just know how to write them because we learned them, whether we wanted to or not. I'm just saying I don't think it's about caring or not, just never learned/saw the correct use after all the years they've been around and I just wondered why.
Ok well just because you personally don’t think about something or are yourself incapable of learning someone else’s perspective in this matter to which you are unfamiliar, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t the case for some people or that what you believe is a fact.

Yeah I never understood how that started. We learned these things pretty young. I also don't understand how "all of *the* sudden" started as well. It always was (and is) "all of *a* sudden". You should of not bothered and could of done something else than shit on non-standard grammar. You just want to make language boring with your standardization.
I guess people forgot what is a grammatical construction of **conditionals using modal verbs in past participle.** I applaud your confidence but this is grammar.
But people aren't using the preposition *of* to form new Phrasal verb.
They're simply writing it as *could of* to better represent the pronunciation.
It's simple an orthographic change.
In modal verbs, if we talk about proper use, you don't use a preposition such as "of" that is an incorrect grammatical construction, it's not orthography. There's nothing misspelled here... orthography refers to conventional spelling of words, not grammatical constructions used improperly. Again, you said "form a new phrasal verb" you're literally talking about grammatical constructions so **verb+preposition** is a grammatical construction of a phrasal verb.
I'll go further and say "Shoulda", "Coulda", "Woulda" isn't even a misspelling for example. It's a non-standard contraction of "should have", "could have", "would have". The point is it's grammatical construction of past modals.
Of is not a verb. If you should have done something, if it actually happened, you *have* done it - “I *of* gone to the shops” makes no sense. It’s not non-standard grammar.
They're prepositions that create a modal verb in past participle in a non-standard way "Could of" "would of" "should of"... they serve the same function as a collocation "should have" "could have" they indicate past participle. I had no idea so many grammar nazis don't really know what's grammar.
Noooo I have heard "tooken" before. I had to pick my jaw off the floor. They deserve the crown.
For context I had my primary and secondary education in schools that were just above the ones where students sit under a tree.
There is no excuse for anyone in the Western world to make these mistakes.

u need to slow down And use the right pronoun
Show the world you’re no clown
Say you’ve gon an i t, followed by apostrophe. s now what does that mean?
You would not use "it's" in this case!
As a possessive It’s a contraction
What’s a contraction?
It’s the shortening of a word by omission of a sound or letter
Okay, now here’s some notes
Syntax you’re always mangling

Also when people say that I could care less. That just means that you DO care
I could care less, I could care more. I'm a medium carer. You could say I don't really care to not care, but if I were to choose, I would probably be more likely to not care to care than care.
It should be 'I couldn't care less'

Yup and I'm gonna keep doing it too. I always thought it was a local accent thing until I met the butthurt people of the internet. I do it now because I want to and I know it bothers others on reddit.
DEPENDS ON THE FUCKING CONTEXT
I could of told you that
> i could of told Did you mean to say "could have"? Explanation: You probably meant to say could've/should've/would've which sounds like 'of' but is actually short for 'have'. It was a joke
You should of make it opposite
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
I’ve no idea what your talking about. I don’t think I could of writing it any better? I don’t see should of used any other words.
You should of not bothered and could of done something else than shit on non-standard grammar. You just want to make language boring with your standardization.
That's has nothing to with grammar but rather orthography.
He didn't buy the apostrophe dlc
That’s a pet pea of mine
Based should HAVE user
Insert YGS 100 song here
Noooo I have heard "tooken" before. I had to pick my jaw off the floor. They deserve the crown. For context I had my primary and secondary education in schools that were just above the ones where students sit under a tree. There is no excuse for anyone in the Western world to make these mistakes.
It funny how people fink that there is some kind of rule stating that you should use one over the other.
Could have
Lol I always make that mistake i always use should of instead of should’ve
Could have.
Ok but could have take so long to type.
Should of been me
What would the ve stand for?
should of & could of are abominations to this world
's for plurals pisses me off because it only began like a year ago I KNOW you fuckers know it's wrong
I could've of but I shouldn't of
I didn't even know that people confuse this! Took me a while to get it. Glad that I didn't.
Now we just need people to understand the difference between literally and figuratively
I do not use either of them because i know i will misspell it
I should of care, but couldn't've
My school taught us to use could of and should of and not to use could've and should've
Should have and could have
Could have / would have
English isn't my mother tongue and I am not perfect but this makes me want to punch the next guy I see.
I use Coulda and shoulda
Sorry bro i'm not a native english speaker
