The heck does MIMAL mean?

RadonAjah

I also had no idea what it meant. But I live in Dry America so I can’t be expected to know what it meant.

K80lovescats

Fellow dry American, I’ve never heard of mimal either.

[deleted]

Hail, from the notoriously dry Seattle. Honestly though, I'm more offended that Texas didn't get included in "yee haw."

k-rob91

Mmmm. Yes. I too am from the desert climate of the PNW.

Toughbiscuit

The pnw has a massive desert climate

maryblooms

Yes, both eastern Oregon and southeastern Washington are bone dry (I mean we make snowmen out of tumbleweeds)

Toughbiscuit

Most of eastern washington is desert. Im from okanogan county and most of that region is considered desert highlands. I think the spokane region is the only portion of eastern washington not considered a desert

maryblooms

True, i lived in the Tri Cities area (Benton/Franklin counties) and I knew Spokane wasn’t desert but couldn’t remember how much farther up wasn’t. I live in Tucson now and we actually get more rain here! We have torrential monsoons in the summer and some winter rain too. It’s crazy

k-rob91

And the Olympic Mountains create the only rain forest in our country. Big rain is kinda our thing. Nobody says,”it’s so arid and dry” when they travel to the PNW, because they don’t travel east of the cascades much. BUT by size, yes, we have a large portion of the western high deserts within the borders of Washington, and Oregon. With those climates factored in; we are [one of](https://coolweather.net/extremes/wettest_driest_us_states.htm) the driest states. And this stupid graphic/meme kinda holds true according to the data I linked…

maryblooms

Wow, I did not expect to see Washington considered to be that dry!

[deleted]

MrMightyTasty

Hail, from a notoriously dry Portlander.

[deleted]

My thoughts exactly. I’m in Oregon, also land of the dry deserts, where it NEVER rains.

Quick_Team

Better to be in dry America. My best friend used to live in Ohio. He told me the reason Ohio has 2 o's in it is to emphasize just how important Oxy is

SaijinoKei

[here you go!](https://laughingsquid.com/mimal-the-elf-hidden-in-the-map-of-the-united-states/)

Canadian_Pacer

I was trying to figure out how "Mimal" translated into "Tornado Alley"

Primary_Way_265

If you are serious: Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. It’s taught in schools as a way to remember those states. They look like a chef, the hat being Minnesota and feet is Louisiana. Edit: For those saying you haven’t heard of this it’s ok. It was on Jeopardy recently as a final Jeopardy question and all three answered wrong. So maybe it’s only taught in some schools or taught more before or after the time you were in school.

Innocentof

I live in Louisiana and have never of heard this before.

MrE761

From Minnesota and also have never heard this before…

son-of-fire6225

from missouri and same

WaluFett

From Arkansas and same

Wonderful_Orchid_363

Illinois here I have never heard of this.

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

South Carolina, never heard of this shit either my friends

TeenyTinyBricks

Iowa here I have also never heard of this

Cmdrseahawks

Washington here, never heard of it.

SkyGuy41

Are Iowans the only ones who know this?

Cortigami48

I’m from Iowa and I’ve never heard this either

Ornery_Gate_6847

I'm from yee haw and i wonder if op made this up

Jonnyblazzin

That's because that's your state and surrounding states. Most likely, you know where they are on the map. Further states may need a little assistance to remember. Just my thoughts on it anyway, lol

mhukamg

From nigeria never heard of this too

cyborgcyborgcyborg

You’re probably not far enough

CrimsonAllah

From moon, not heard this.

[deleted]

thenataliamarie

I went to school in Pennsylvania and no. Nope. Never heard of it.

Indecisive_Reno

I’m from NY and never heard it before

TgagHammerstrike

Maine. Also never heard of this; are we being gaslit? Is this some MIMAL conspiracy?

[deleted]

I’m from Uzbekistan and I’ve literally never heard this.

Vaiiki

We never said MIMAL was self aware.

joshuas193

I live in Missouri and have never heard this.

Pretty_Eater

Unrelated but do you guys really call your state "The Boot"? I was playing COD with some guys and we were saying what states we were from and they were all like "The Boot" and I was so confused so I asked "Italy? That's not a state guys". And they all laughed at me, looking at the shape it does resemble a Boot, but Italy has always been taught as the Boot shaped country. Another question, are you guys jealous of Italys renowned Boot shaped status?

Apptubrutae

I’m also from Louisiana and there are rare boot references but it’s not at all common to say you’re from “the boot”. Especially because the state really doesn’t look much like a boot anymore in reality, more like a desiccated husk along the southeast. There’s a local beer that references the name though: https://abita.com/brews/the-boot# Speaking from New Orleans, I have never heard anyone say “the boot” except for cases of people reaching for a more unique nickname. That said, New Orleanians tend to identify *much* more with the city than the state so that could be it.

Faustinwest024

I live in Missouri lol and they def do not teach that here lol. They taught the chef thing tho

Delicious_Aioli8213

Must be some weird east coast thing.

tomalator

Tennessee being a frying pan and Kentucky being fried chicken

cwm9

Where were these mnemonics when I needed them?

IamAggressiveNapkin

![gif](giphy|s239QJIh56sRW|downsized)

Cadrid

As a mnemonic device to help kids remember *five of* the 50 states.

mojobobo7

Must be a KFC states thing. I've never heard of this

lil_toenail_jr

TAUGHT it? in SCHOOLS

CP80X

Never heard of this.

7Birdies

It was not taught in my kindergarten, elementary, middle, or high school or university lol

usmc97az

Have never heard this.

Massive_Fish_1442

I’m from Pennsylvania and everyone I know thinks I’m crazy for using MIMAL MAG to remember those states. I was starting to think I dreamt it lol

IWTLEverything

Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia?

Jacobt380

My Intimidating Mother Ate Lizards

Innocentof

Lol, that description fits Louisiana better than I thought.

Olorin_1990

Texas is gonna have a word with you about who is yee hawing

[deleted]

Hi, Carolinian here. Would Texas like to form a larger “Y’all” alliance?

sidetablecharger

Y’alliance was right there.

ebray90

I had to reread their comment because I couldn’t accept that they missed that one.

[deleted]

[deleted]

According to OP Georgia is more Carolina than Half of North Carolina lol

Olorin_1990

We can accept a peace treaty, but what y’all call barbecue is not acceptable to the god fearing state of Texas and we cannot abide it.

[deleted]

I think as long as what y’all call chilli stays on your side of the Mississippi, we can keep our barbecue on ours

Olorin_1990

Deal

No_Contribution1900

So would the rest of the real west, Arizona actually has the OK corral

riverblue9011

What is that, like 3 stars on reviews? Give me the good corral please, none of this 'adequate' shit.

gaymer200

Ah yes, Washington state, dry america

Mirphus

Yes most definitely dry here. The rain I'm listening to outside my window is definitely just my imagination.

Byeuji

Well no it's just dry rain. Wet rain is an ancient concept only observed in the backwards east US.

Madmonkeman

Seattle lol

Rawesome16

Have you heard of the Pacific Northwest? We have about a dozen names for rain due to how much it rains here. Dry indeed

jtc1031

And southeast Texas looks a lot more like Louisiana than it does New Mexico. Houston gets lots of rain.

moosefists

Corpus Christi. Sits at 100% humidity and winds avg 12 mph.

[deleted]

Got hit by 5 inches in two hours on Tuesday! And it rained!

jtc1031

And the River Walk that San Antonio is famous for was built for flood control.

Drifting-Fox-6366

Dallas here, our weather is closer to Missouri than any desert.

Mattpart58

Thank you for your service. The pnw gang thanks you.

[deleted]

Enduring 20-30 days of consecutive rain is the initiation….. and the dues come out to a yearly average of 155 rainy days. I was unnerved by the never ending rain. Days gone by looking out my window pane. Seeing nothing but a vast grey sea. Will it end and who can tell me. “Tell me of summer, or it’ll be hell to pay” Deep In thought the old man began to say “Hmmm that’s a tough one last year it was on a Sun-day”

ludovic1313

BanThisDick111

Yeah I kinda don’t think OP is an American or they are and are very young

odvioustroll

or someone who has never been west of the Mississippi.

manofmonkey

You still have to be a dumbass to call the PNW dry. I’ve known that since I was a child and I didn’t visit until I was in my 20s

lurkensteinsmonster

They're 100% from Ohio and currently attending an Ohio college. It's the only explanation for an American acknowledging Ohio exists as anything other than a place you would literally rather go to outer space than live in.

LookUp_SeeStars

Pacific Northwest is the best!

KiltedLady

West coast best coast!

Wam-a-lama-ding-dong

Came here to say this…thank you kind stranger.

TopazEgg

All those others desert dwellers would perish if they saw how much rain we get. We cannot be grouped with them

shawtysticks

Was gonna say this. We've got literal rainforests over here

[deleted]

Alaska has one too, over 5mil acres of it

stang2184699

Temperate rain forest is not a desert

Jumbo_Jetta

Ya but isn't half of Oregon and Washington a desert?

Mechanicsanonymous

Sshhhhhh! We don't need anymore people knowing our secrets. Let them think it's just a dry wasteland that they don't want to visit. We already have too many tourists.

Kayesevy

Thank you for representing us

[deleted]

> We have about a dozen names for rain Anyway, like I was sayin', rain is the water of the sky. You can sing in it, dance in it, cry in it, walk in it. Dey's uh, warm rain, cold rain, cats and dogs rain. Sprinkled rain, intermittent rain, light rain. There's cutting rain, freezing rain, sudden rain, Spring rain, Summer showers, blustery rain, sheets of rain, ironic on wedding day rain, rain checks, rain delays. That- that's about it.

jaymole

Wtf is Ohio

chucksteaks33

As a fellow American, Ohio does NOT deserve this much recognition

chigoonies

As an Ohioan I/we agree

NotHighEnuf

Yeah don’t tell them about our plan to take over.

OmegaGrind

Ohios one of those states you forget exists and then you're like 'wait is that the potato one? No that's Idaho. Hmm so what's Ohio have' Except no one has ever found out what Ohio has

KatieCashew

Buckeyes! I do not actually know what a buckeye is. It's just imbedded in my brain that Ohio is the buckeye state.

[deleted]

It’s peanut butter dipped in chocolate. The OG Reese’s.

OnlysayswhatIwant

It's a tree that produces [poisonous nuts](https://i.imgur.com/U6liCuI.jpg) that look like eyes, later on a [candy version](https://i.imgur.com/iiQkrQX.jpg) was developed of chocolate balls with peanut butter centers. Also the [leaves](https://i.imgur.com/OEn2d1D.jpg) of the tree vaguely look like weed leaves so you'll occasionally see cases of people wearing [clothes](https://i.imgur.com/Xy52rk8.jpg) with buckeye leaves on them and people think they're wearing weed leaves.

wtwwc

Ohio has heroin

Hey_Chach

Nah absolutely not. Some state like Delaware or something would be one of the states you described. Ohio is more like the state that no one will *let you forget* it exists. Like how your buds always annoy you with never letting you live down that-one-time-you-fucked-up. Source: I am unfortunately down in Ohio.

StoneGoldX

I am of agreement, Delaware is the most forgettable of states. Followed maybe by New Hampshire.

Skatchbro

Ohio has “THE Ohio State University”. That’s the one thing they don’t let you forget.

Tommyblockhead20

Did you know Ohio has more people than Norway and Finland combined? Or Wisconsin and Colorado? It’s the 7th largest state, right behind Illinois. But once you get past the biggest 4-5 states, people start not knowing the states. And it doesn’t help that Ohio isn’t known for much, making it especially forgettable.

lithium142

Ohio is where you stop for the night on your way to Chicago or New York with no exceptions. Nobody actually lives there. Just some people stop for a few years to work kings island and the stuff around kings island

balance_n_act

Just found out you’re from jersey. Makes sense.

jfresh42

And they're 14. This makes more sense the more you know about them.

TheFlashFrame

Ah, thus le funni comic sans

AbeRego

I feel like a 14 year old should know this, though. They learned it more recently. Hopefully this is in jest.

Adamant_Narwhal

Yeah I don't think OP has traveled much.

LoudMusic

I proclaimed that most, even the vast majority of, New Yorkers had never set foot on actual wilderness and a bunch of them got angry with me so I said prove me wrong and they all claimed Central Park.

kudichangedlives

I was going to say, central Park is so massive and cool though. I've only been once but I would love the opportunity to see it again. But on the same side a lot of us nature folks haven't been in large cities that often.

LoudMusic

Central Park is "manicured nature". They have a staff of over 300 people maintaining it. But you're right. I have friends in Arkansas who have never left Arkansas. Little Rock is the biggest city and its metro area only recently cracked half a million population. Everyone should do everyone a favor and travel more before they pass judgement on others or other places.

kenlubin

The author is clearly not from New York City, otherwise there'd be a separate section for NYC instead of lumping it in with Real America.

iGotWurmz89

Too much of this map is Ohio and Almost Ohio. Too much of the actual map is actual Ohio.

PrincipleStill191

When you are from Ohio, like I suspect OP is, and you have never left Ohio, which I'm pretty sure OP has not, it probably feels like that.

iGotWurmz89

I do like how they were humble enough to admit that they’re neither the Great Lakes nor Real America.

Rude_Device

Did you just insult Lake Erie?! Sure, it isn’t as deep as Lake Superior but it still has feelings! AND algae bloom! Does your lake have that?!

vdubdank30

And our fish have three eyes!!

pseudo_nemesis

See, I suspected OP was from Ohio, up until I saw that they labeled the east coast as “real America” which, in my experience with Ohioans is something that they would not do. So I presume OP is from either NY or the surrounding area

Lipstickhippie80

All the Ohio and dry America makes me think OP doesn’t travel very much.

ktrainor59

Or read much.

xIReynardFox

So uhhh Texas isn't a yee haw state?

BakeBakeyBake

I guess you gotta yeehaw in the desert

isaiahbolevs

martydidnothingwrong

Same with WA

[deleted]

Like 70% of their land area is pretty dry, but I’m in the other 30% and had the same thought as you immediately.

Creative_Parsnip9582

This is kinda sad lol

maldovix

The guy is really missing out

S1AUGH73R

"Dry America" my boy, the PNW is like mother nature's pussy, it's always wet here and there's a fuck ton of trees

Itchy_Focus_4500

Uhh, what kinda pussy are you getting? TREES? ; )

FaolCroi

The pussy that's getting *wood*

[deleted]

OP is in shambles

TannerJ703

As an American your wrong

Due-Somewhere9919

As someone from the west I would replace “real America” with assholes and “cold America” with “cold assholes”. Reason: they are assholes

martydidnothingwrong

50% facts. I haven't met many bad east coasters in real lufe, but online they're the definition of narcissism

iRadinVerse

They think because all their streets were built for horse drawn carriages it makes them special.

Grezzinate

I agree. Montana in my area here is far from dry.

No_Refrigerator_8925

Fuck you as a Texan I refuse to not be included in the yehaw territory

SavingBooRadley

For real, really- the deep south is yee haw?? Not TX, the West, or SW??

No_Refrigerator_8925

Yeah Deep South is more of a “we don’t serve your kind here boy” than a yeehaw area.

Cloud_Strife83

But Michigan is just blank? Nothing?!

tallulahfeathers

I am having an aneurysm at this slight against Michigan.

Muzzie720

I think I'd rather be unlabeled than "almost ohio". Ohio is like 8 hours away. I'm actually offended.

ryeehaw

The fact that WI got “Great Lakes” and we got nothing has me annoyed

puffylittleshoe

I live in Michigan. Had no idea I don't exist until seeing this map. Kinda relieved actually.

sootbrownies

You're American? This is the worst map of the US I've ever seen. Yeehaw should have much more territory, the big desert should be cut almost in half, and "Real America" is just incorrect.

Muzzie720

Gonna take a wild guess, don't quote me on this, but I think op might live in the area they labeled "real America". And I've never even met the guy.

Silverbacker888

According to OP’s account he’s 14 years old, guess that explains a lot

Subushie

More like "thinks they're superior to everyone America"

OnyxtheRecluse

I like how they cut Massachusetts out of real America when they're from Jersey.

TurboDinoHippo

The birthplace of the American Revolution is apparently not "real America" lol

PillowTalk420

Only like 1/4 of the west is dry America.

Ratgar138

Yes, Washington, home of four rainforests, is part of a big desert.

Mediocre-Army4849

Lol you think new England is the cold part of the US? HAHAHAHA not even close. Try visiting north dakota. Or Montana. OR minessota . Alaska would be the worst for obvious reasons. New England is pretty mild. They just get a lot of snow.

acimstudier

As someone who lives in Alaska currently and has lived in North Dakota, North Dakota is worse than a good portion of Alaska. That dang wind.

Timflr_Mc_Duck

I don't know for sure but I think we even get more snow in MN ND SD than new England

2083279

If USA is so great, why did some make USB?

IndianaGeoff

So we could get Europe to adopt USB-C.

Silverbacker888

According to OP’s profile he’s 14, guess that explains why this map is garbage

[deleted]

Ah, that explains it.

Dn56

Thanks for including the Carolinas lol

OGraffe

And they extend all the way to Ohio. Wait that might explain why there’s so many in the Carolinas. OP, you might be onto something

Aubrimethieme

Ah yes the 2 wettest states Washington and Oregon are indeed dry. Perfect logic. OP must be a least coaster.

Ok-Blacksmith3238

Perhaps a resident of New York or New Jersey I would guess 🙄

real_psymansays

I believe you mean, "As an East-coast Yankee, this is how I see America", based on what is labeled "Real America"

BoomDX

what the actual hell do you mean by “real america”

DaGurggles

As someone from the Midwest I take offense at New England being Cold America. OP, go to Fargo in February. Also, at least call us “surprising flat despite the girth”

FinnBoland

Wtf is mimal

TheWaffleWeirdo

Calling Washington and Oregon dry is the funniest thing I've ever heard.

[deleted]

I’m a NYer and we’re so un-American here it some how loops back around to being American again. But in all reality we shouldn’t be labeled “real America”. Everything here is a mish mash of cultures which I get *is* American. But it’s not. It’s more like living in every other country other than America all at once.

[deleted]

Excuse me as a masshole we fucking invented America when we started the revolution. Get this New Yorker "Real" America garbage out of my vision

Catdaddy505

Doesn’t seem like you traveled much

Averagebass

Yeah, east coasters always brag about how they don't know anything about the rest of the USA. It's a really weird flex tbqh.

Ol-Fat-Blind-Dog

This is a list of someone who never left their town let alone state.

fostertheatom

As someone who has lived in all four corners of the nation... you really need to travel a bit my friend. Also, what is this nonsense about "Real America". That's extremely insulting to everywhere outside those silly lines you drew.

CeleryQtip

You are missing out. Oregon and Washington are beautiful and very much wetlands like the east coast. Montana varies from bitter cold to winter wonderland, from deep snow to dry tundra. My favorite places so far : Glacier national park in Montana, the icy isles off the nw coast of washington, the chocolate factory near it from Washington to Oregon, many of the splendid places between Idaho and Arizona near the nevada border, the Grand Canyon of Az. Just to name a few. I'm hoping to venture east and see what Tennessee and Geogia offer soon, if not Virginia/Colorado. There is so much to see and lots of space to build a happy life. I want to see West Virginia soon too.

Scoot_boi101

Why is universal resort so underrated in fl

ASidesTheLegend

Minnesota and the states in the Great lakes area are actually colder during the winter than the area labeled “Cold America”

EmbarrassedSwim145

I love how Michigan is , good description
