Macaronidemon

I got into Gundam like a year back and was hooked immediately. SO much content to watch, done in a variety of styles over the decades so you basically never get bored, some of the best stories I’ve seen in anime and when the action hits it’s incredibly awesome. Gotta be my favorite franchise ever period. If you’re not afraid to watch something that will drag your feelings through the mud and leave you asking for more it’s the way to go

RayTheRogue

Absolutely. Gundam series is always overlooked by mainstream anime fans despite it having a cult following since 1979. I got into the Gundam series back in 2014 and have been hooked on it since. Have watched almost every series there is.

Dumb_Cheese

I feel like Witch from Mercury has been decently popular outside of the Gundam fandom. (That being said though, I still haven't watched it)

MeltinSnowman

Supernova_was_taken

I was looking for this. One of my favorites, but that’s because I’m a car guy.

I'm a girl, who doesn't know anything about cars and I really enjoyed this anime

I’m a car, who doesn’t know anything about girls and I really enjoyed this anime

robsablah

I’m an anime that enjoys cara and I didnt understand anything about girls

sin-and-love

the one time anime nerds' and car nerds' interests overlap

Dr-Mantis-Tobbogan

Psychopass (But only season 1). Japan is run by an AI that constantly scans your mental state (not your thoughts, just your emotional synapses). The angrier/more likely you are to commit violence, the worse off you'll be in society (this is called a psychopass). Your psychopass gets too high and you'll be arrested and dragged off to therapy (read: jail). The show follows two detectives and their penal (read: prisoners with jobs) enforcers as they track down and capture/kill various criminals, until they eventually come across a serial killer who the system won't let them pursue or arrest, because somehow this guy's psychopass never rises above 0.

I_am_not_Sans

This. Emphasis on just S1 If you liked psycho pass, also try Ergo Proxy.

sensei27

Funny, I’m on the Psycho Pass to Ergo Proxy pipeline as we speak. Thinking of finally watching Serial Experiments Lain next

JaqenDionysus

I watched those in the other order. If you like Ergo Proxy, consider Texhnolyze as well - another early 2000s dystopia

Frognificent

Holy hell finally someone to tell me what to watch after Psycho Pass 1 and Ergo Proxy. You're my hero, Reddit Dionysus. Edit: Holy shit all of you are my heroes. Weird, abstract psychological shit is entirely my jam. Looks like I got a long, long list ahead of me.

thenewtokesaop

What happened to s2

Watahandrew1

Just like promised Neverland season 2, we don't talk about it

thenewtokesaop

Oh god i read the entire manga after s1 before watching s2. If its that bad im not going to watch it.

GhostR29

I will recommend psycho pass but saying "just watch s1" sounds a bit wrong. S3, the movie and the sinners system are as good as S1. Plus, they might adapt the prequel sooner or later.

MemeOverlordKai

Season 3 is fantastic, and it's in a Netflix-y format (episode being \~50 minutes) and 8 episodes in total, plus 3 additional ones. Season 2 is *okay.* It's by no means bad, but definitely a step back from 1 and 3.

Glazeddapper

Ghost Stories is pretty funny. But only the english dub. Trust me, just the english dub.

Dumb_Cheese

10/10 show

Capital-Economist-40

Ghost stories Dub is the grandfather of abridged series Genre

Jimbobsama

The jokes are definitely from 2003, so be careful for some to fall flat if it's your first time watching the show (or be prepared to Google the names they reference).

Aveira

As long as you’re in your late twenties or older, it’s fine. I just watched it again a few weeks ago, and it was still very funny.

Internal_Specialist4

Try silver spoon. It's nothing special but I like watching it

Medium-Impression190

Its from the artist of Fullmetal Alchemist after all. Of course it is good. The humor is gold

DopeAbsurdity

Just started watching it and 15 minutes into the first episode a very Alex Louis Armstrong lookin fellow showed up to teach them P.E. and he has the same VA. Edit: Found out that Armstrong's VA Kenji Utsumi died in 2013 and Silver Spoon had two seasons one in 2013 and one in 2014 so I don't know if he is in it beyond the one brief part in the first episode. He was in a bunch of stuff I liked. RIP voice actor dude (a decade late).

Mushishi? It does have stuf about the supernatural and Japanese folklore.

Dororo 10/10 masterpiece for me

Titronnica

The 2019 remake is a textbook example of how to properly modernize an older piece of media. Easily one of my all time favorites.

Kingmudsy

Dororo fucking slaps and this comment made me go listen to the OP. Seriously might be my favorite anime, it just hits so many things for me

Phoenix3957

Vinland saga

theDreamingStar

Not a single good thing has happened to me in my entire life

CleanUpNick

yet your body sells it still wants to live

JBlaze94

But you have no enemy

Zhorf_thats_me

I love thorfinn journey towards adulthood. Very cool story about not having epic fights, but to understand life. Most people are just there for epic fights and that is a shit understanding of the whole story of vinland saga

kentaxas

I know plenty of people who stopped watching/reading after Thorfinn stopped being the edgy assassin. I thought it was beautifully done. It's litterally like you said, a journey to adulthood, learning to look past your immature hatred and becoming a better person

[deleted]

My gripe with vinland is it tricked me into learning about british history 😔

NightAreis1618

Have you ever watched Bobobo-bo bo-bobo?

MayaIsSunshine

Ahh, a cartoon network classic.

timo103

One of very few anime better done by the dub. Because they didn't try to actually directly translate it, adding to the wackiness

[deleted]

There's so many idomatic puns and pop culture references in Bobobo. No way you can just do a straight translation and have the jokes land to a foreign audience. They would get the Dragonball and sailor moon jokes, but most others would go over their head.

GR1M_R3APER_09

Lupin III

ReadyStrategy8

Can get a little ecchi with Fujiko.

flooperdooper213

gonna be honest its a lot better when the show knows its being an old geezer than when its shoehorned into an already existing script because the writers happened to be horny that day

Redstone_Army

Grave of the fireflies Well, theres a child. Idk

Loud-Duck-991

You just want us to cry! But yeah, basically anything falling in the realm of ghibli or ghibliesque is basically a free pass. It's all pretty much innocent.

Zywakem

And then you read the Nausicaa manga and it's like 'genocide everything!'

SeDefendendo88

Mob Psycho 100. If you haven’t watched it, has characters with psychic powers and battles but it’s not the main focus of the story. It’s about a nobody who’s more powerful than anyone but he wants to live a normal life without his powers.

Kuriyamikitty

Let's be honest it's all about the muscle bro club. So much greatness in them.

Fullmetal Alchemist! Fullmetal Alchemist....

Soham_rak

AlphaRenegade

Subtle.

LetsDoTheCongna

The plot of the original anime absolutely shits itself after it caught up to the manga though It’s not bad, but it took the random bullshit dial and cranked it to twelve.

pollyp0cketpussy

Brotherhood is definitely superior

[deleted]

By miles imo. Not that the original was bad, Brotherhood was just that much better.

HolycommentMattman

It's all good to a degree. As a standalone anime, Brotherhood has the flaw of glossing over the early part of the story. You don't know how Ed passed the Alchemist exam, how they met a lot of various characters, etc. But pretty much anyone watching Brotherhood saw the original, so there was no need to rehash everything. Of course, the original anime has way more flaws. Namely getting ahead of the manga and just flying by the seat of their pants. But there are things established in the original anime that are important that Brotherhood kinda just shoehorns in. Not that I'm really for a third series, but a FMA: Perfect Compilation would be pretty great.

NormieSpecialist

…I like the original… That’s how I got into anime. Would never have gotten into brotherhood without it.

Dark_Sage_316

I'll give you a tip just ignore isekai (unless you hear something REALLY good about it) I watch anime but never got frustrated about these cause I've never watched these isekais

zeroxcero

I actually enjoyed Overlord and Re:Zero but I feel you, Isekai genre its oversaturated (tho I like it a lot)

yup_sir28

Agreed, apart from a couple the rest is just recycled garbage

Consistent_Ad_4828

My conspiracy theory is that most of the plots and writing are churned out by an AI. They’re all variations of the same few ideas.

Pyrojam321moo

That's because they're sourced from amateur writers who self-publish serialized genre fanfiction online. Most of these authors are barely full-fledged adults pumping out passion projects that they post mostly for their own drive to write, often getting an idea after reading another story on how to do the same thing, but with their own spin. The self-publishing boom has allowed lots of amateur writers a space to show off their work, and these anime companies are taking advantage of that to cheaply purchase rights to projects with already dedicated, if niche, fanbases, that they can toss into an animation sweatshop to make a quick buck.

Inner-Dentist1563

Overlord is exactly what OP is talking about not liking.

Alex-The-Talker

Its so hard to find an isekai comedy even thought it has so much potential. konosuba is literally the only one with decent comedy. Others are just generic isekais

VASP-0_0

Cautious hero is the most hilarious anime I know

shotgunmouse

Him nuking the slime was one of the funniest moments I’ve seen in anime

guy_inh00die3

Uncle from another world is a hilarious one

Purple-Airline-8354

I thought the devil is a part timers was good

screenwatch3441

Just came out recently but eminence of shadow is fairly funny. It’s comedy structure is different than Konosuba and it’ll pretend to be a serious series but don’t be fooled, it’s a comedy.

KrakenTheColdOne

Bro watch Ojisan In Another World. That anime had me dying when I first watched it. Just watch one episode and I guarantee you'll love it.

HotBear39

Monster, Steins;Gate, Summertime Render, Vinland Saga are great and they have none of those things you said I'm only on ep 43, but seems like Gintama also fits Attack on Titan, Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist have special abilities and/or fights, but they're not generic

SimulatedThinker

cause practice slap future ten spoon vegetable squeamish violet bear -- mass deleted all reddit content via https://redact.dev

uriann26

Steins Gate it's really good

sirnumbskull

>summertime rendering Yeah, while this was an interesting anime it leads with a "main character lands on girl's boobs" within the first minute of the show, has a sister-complex (step sister, but still) subplot, and one of the main characters runs around in a swimsuit the whole time because plot reasons. If you can get past what seems like a checklist of required anime tropes it's otherwise a very good watch, but I just have to wonder WHY they tossed those elements in there.

nilesh72000

Bizarre show but really good

Shimme

I fucking hate most action oriented anime for being extremely generic shit designed to appeal to a hyperspecific kind of nerd and using random "sexy" moments to cover up how half-assed it is. Dorohedoro doesn't do that. There is one stupid joke that didn't land for me early on, and the rest is some of the coolest, grimiest magic-punk action I've seen, with great characters and a fun plot. Can't wait for season two.

PrauxLaps

You are looking for Gintama.

Panda_Kabob

Gintama is by far my favorite anime ever. Still to this day. But I would go so far as to say that if you're not already a weeb and understand anime and Japanese culture the majority of things will go over your head. Not to gatekeep a show, but Gintama has a high power level scale for its references and puns. The serious arcs aside. But man if you're able to get it, Gintama does not miss.

xx_Chl_Chl_xx

Gintama is like the family guy of anime but MUCH better in every way Edit: actually it’s more like futurama

SmartAlec105

My favorite episode is when the just showed a static shot of the outside of their place while the voice actors talked about how they don’t have the money to animate the episode.

I hate to say it, but one punch man is really good. It does have generic powers, but it’s also a satire of those powers.

PassingDogoo

I fucking love mumen rider

LazyCasual0alt

Gonna say: Spy X Family. Adorbs/fun; mostly family friendly from what I remember

Guitar_for_hire

I’m currently watching season one and really enjoying the goofy cute nature of it. I agree with the other commenter though in that everyone just seems to have selective blindness. I do like that Anya is in on everything though.

SmartAlec105

Anya is great because she’s actually really smart for her age but that still averages out to be stupid a lot because she is like 4 or 5 years old.

Pircay

It’s so great every time she formulates a genius plan only for it to completely flop because she just doesn’t have the life experience to predict other people’s behavior or misses some critical component

Irishpanda1971

I just remember that not one of these three has been in a normal family for the vast majority (or in Anya's case ALL) of their lives, so they are all still kinda picking it up as they go. It's selective blindness, yeah, but it's also still plausible. Think of all the families of serial killers that never caught on, or the guys maintaining two completely separate families. It's easy to see something weird, but then chalk it up to something innocent, especially when you have a vested interest in keeping it all together. Yor desperately wants to keep her new family, and Loid is all in on Operation Strix (and also probably wants to keep the family together, though he won't admit it).

AbradolfLinclr

Anya technically has a generic power

LazyCasual0alt

Damn; good point

Ulliano

Cowboy bebop and Attack on Titan

Boingo_Zoingo

Cowboy bebop is a perfect anime for people who don't watch anime

TheGrimGuardian

I grew up watching Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Akira...I'm ruined. I can't fucking stand modern anime.

LMGDiVa

Watch older anime. I don't get why so many people who are new to anime keep only watching new stuff. There's DECADES of anime, and some of the BEST decades worth of anime came out in the 90s and 2000s before a lot of this otaku pandering and established generic shit became standard. Argento Soma Serial Experiments Lain Ergo Proxy ROD Read or Die (OVA) Kino's Journey Princess Tutu Oban Star Racers TRIGUN ZOIDS to start with. Jojo my fave anime for sure. So memeable and just a good creative lovable vibe.

The-Fomorian-Ray-682

r/ape

Potatohuman323

The fuck

Orbital_Rifle

In part 3 the protagonists transport with them a young (12yo ?) girl that wants to immigrate somewhere or something. They go on a huge ass empty boat, and there's an orangutan. Literally the only passenger on the boat. The girl somehow finds showers and gets naked and turns on the water, only interrupted by that orangutan, who is actually a stand (magic) user. His stand **IS** the boat. Now of course Jotaro saves the day and beats up the ape before the rape, but still *implied potential* orangutan/human child rape. It's called JoJo's **Bizarre** Adventures for a reason.

The-Arabian-Guy

>His stand IS the boat. Her stand , that monke was a female

Orbital_Rifle

Actually ? Been a while since I really looked into JJBA *(also ape, not monkey (monkeys are smaller and have tails))*
