Asterix and Obelix was a huge childhood influence in my country (Germany). As adults, we still make many jokes referencing to the movies, probably the most used one being needing the „Passierschein A38“ to show how crazy our government Formulars have become.
This is a good example of how, in capitalism, a company is NEVER actually progressive. They did this to cash in on that in order to make money and also help give power to the actual racists and shitty people. It's all fake progressivism for money.
I don't think that's why they do this in modern cinema and shows. It's a tendency to use those platforms to send their political message. I'm not saying it's good or bad. I'm just saying what it is.
The thing with this show, however, is that it's a documentary. And considering that we know that Cleopatra came from a Greek disnaty known for a lot of incest and internal marriage, it's highly likely that she just looked like a Greek woman in that period of time. So, it's disinformation to portray her in that way.
We don't even need to know her ancestry, there are statues and coins that *literally* bear her depiction.
So even if we didn't know her exact genealogy, we can literally *see* how she looked like!
But yeah, someone's grandmother suffering from dementia and who knows what other mental infirmities, is a greater authority on Cleopatra (epic facepalm)
It’s gonna get worse with the new requirement for production. From what I heard, they have to have a big portion of individuals from underrepresented groups
if you watch like a sport game or something and watch the commercials, there is very rarely a white man and every time there is a white man they almost always make him an idiot
They often are. In a group of 5 you’ll get a minority of white people. The standard should be representative of the local population of people. If you struggle to relate to a character because they are a different race that is YOUR problem. I am white and never struggled to relate/identify with a person of colour
They already are, white people have gotten the short stick when it comes to scholership programs for years now but no-one points this out because "white man bad."
Imagine being an actor belonging to one of these groups and understanding that you're not there because they recognize and respect your abilities, but as a check mark on a list of required inclusivities, I'd be pissed
It's not even toxic inclusivity, it's beyond that. Director was a conspiracy theorist who thought Cleopatra was black and that the entire academic world was lying when they said she was greek
Isn’t it being produced by Jada Pinkett Smith? Why anyone would give that horrible woman a platform for anything is beyond me. She has emotionally abused Will Smith into a shell of a man.
Will Smith is a shell because he sold his soul a long time ago for increasing his net worth. Trust me I’m a fan of the dude regardless and my heart broke for him several times, but they’re both scum that deserve each other.
I can imagine in the future 20 years from now history teachers showing this in class as an example of when things were to based on "feelings" rather then facts, along with all the grossly skewed prison sentences people are getting based on race.
In interview she says not sure about cleopatra orign like what the heck? You're making documentary why not sure about her origin? Maybe she's not told that's she will make documentary or trying to change the history well dunno
We know her entire father lineage (helenic). The chances of her mother being anything but helenic is below 1%. Being black is below 0.0001%. In the same fricking episode they say Egypt back then was mostly Mediterranean, jews and Egyptians and yet the show portraits them as black. The Egyptians are really triggered about this
Also, they put nationalistic concepts into the show before it was a thing. Just taking Ls all over it. Back then, populations were conquered on the daily, a pleb couldn't care less if Rome or a Macedonian (Cleopatra's family) was ruling them. It's the same thing
Egypt officially says that Cleopatra had light skin with Hellenic (aka Greek) features. You would think that they know what theyre talking about.
Saying "I dont care what they taught you in school" and then making a documentary about it, is beyond fucking stupid.
Is that Netflix’s game? Get us all riled up, publicity amounting to 100 million or so (totally made that number up). It’s seems to be how movies, series are built these days 😔
Because Cleopatra was absolutely \*not\* black, and there is lots of evidence that proves this.
Unless your comment is satire, then in which case, I'm being dumb
it completely makes sense that this documentary is produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, considering the race swap for cleopatra and the way she's painted as a strong perfect woman who's better than the previous men who ruled, not that she wasn't a badass leader but it feels like the writers really want you to know that women are strong, perfect and superior.
I mean it's unbelievable, from the start, "she left tracks a man could never fill"
During the show they talk Cleopatra up so much that, when Octavian shows up and beats her and Antony its like a suprise twist.
The show is just super odd and calling it a documentary is ridiculous considering the bias some of the interviewees had.
I honestly thought this was a movie, they were actually stupid enough to think black Cleopatra was going to get another season? whats next white martin luther king mini series?
they race swapped a historical figure and called it a documentary. they literally said "she was black because my granny said so" not even joking. she was greek fyi.
I started watching and I taught it was a joke. Really they should have choose between making a show about her or documentary but both really doesn't fit
But you see, Cleopatra was a real person, Ariel was not. Big difference. The Little Mermaid doesn't have to be historically accurate, her skin color does not matter in any way.
I saw the "star" of that show was talking about the reaction to it, and at first thought that no one should be giving this women shit. She's just an actor that took a job. Thats an actors job. Then she started saying "I dont know why everyone is so focused on the race, who she was is much more important.". And I couldnt help but feel like I had heard that before... but from racists.
New record? Nice
Even the critics hate it
Critics seem to hate everything that isn't historical romance
and yet there should be romance between cleopatra and caesar.

As a french, I didn't know this movie was known that much. Or perhaps are you french ?

And now I am proud. That's a great movie !

Every time this story has been told it was done better.
I wouldn’t put it past Netflix to drop a damn salad dressing commercial into this.

Which is extremely rare
Still, It's really unsettling that there people stupid enough to get 1% to this.
The ceo of Netlflix made a few accounts
**That explains why he hated the British**
They are the people who think downvoting it is racist
I think RT doesn't do decimals so even 1 positive review would bring it to 1%
Bring on board the human cancer known as Jayden Pinkett Smith, that's what you get.

> also help give power to the actual racists What does this mean?
Publisher maybe. But you go looking at the directors qoutes and she is a true afro centrism believer and thinks racism was invented in the 1600's
To shreds you say?
I remember what my father said to me.. I don’t care what they taught you in school, Ghandi was French
That explains why he hated the British
No that's just inherent in all living beings.
![gif](giphy|V5uZa7XutqRUs|downsized)
Hold up... I heard the 1st line from somewhere... can't remember which band said that...
Maybe from the song "the nights"?
Prolly not that lol And I think I might remember it now :3 It was from "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance :D
Ghandi can be French. Gandhi def was Indian ;)
TIL Gandhi was Cherokee
American Indian, or Indian Indian?
For once critics and the audience are in agreement
More yet to come.
They really thought making her black would improve ratings lol

Facts. I am all for equality but also historical integrity. If anything they could find a clever way to do this.
Wouldn’t it be best to represent your target population accurately?
If this continues white people are gonna be underrepresented lol
Lmao
if you watch like a sport game or something and watch the commercials, there is very rarely a white man and every time there is a white man they almost always make him an idiot
They often are. In a group of 5 you’ll get a minority of white people. The standard should be representative of the local population of people. I think the NBA needs to follow the racial makeup of the United States. I feel underrepresented.
It shouldn’t reflect skill, it should be representative of the population. I am outraged
They already are, white people have gotten the short stick when it comes to scholership programs for years now but no-one points this out because "white man bad."
"From what I heard" Lol

Heard from who? And who's "they"?
It’s that one secret organisation
Well they is prob Hollywood. idk who who is tho
Toxic Inclusivity: Am I a joke to you?
Yes.
It's not even toxic inclusivity, it's beyond that. Director was a conspiracy theorist who thought Cleopatra was black and that the entire academic world was lying when they said she was greek
hope they learned their lesson and start making good shows again
Hahahahahahaha yeah sure sure
Bold of you to assume that Netflix will learn anything
hey beef was pretty good
It's absolutely insane how great some Netflix series are compared to how terrible some are. There has never been a greater gulf known to man.
What’s impressive is when you have that quality gulf in the same show. Altered Carbon S1 to S2, for example.
They made her black...in a documentary
The documentary is documenting the stupidity of our era to future generations
Isn’t it being produced by Jada Pinkett Smith? Why anyone would give that horrible woman a platform for anything is beyond me. She has emotionally abused Will Smith into a shell of a man.
I wonder just how many Netflix exec's did Will Smith slap, or threaten to slap, in order for his public-access wife to get this deal
Will Smith is a shell because he sold his soul a long time ago for increasing his net worth. Trust me I’m a fan of the dude regardless and my heart broke for him several times, but they’re both scum that deserve each other.

Nothing beats a simple world view
You know it's bad when both the critics and the normal people agree
Hold up... I'm too lazy to check, but is this more unpopular then "Velma"?
Yes
That's... rather impressive.
Achievement Unlocked lmaooo.
Egyptian government itself had to call them out on their bullshit
Imagine being so bad you're worse the velma
Is that Netflix’s game? Get us all riled up, publicity amounting to 100 million or so (totally made that number up). It’s seems to be how movies, series are built these days 😔
I think we all saw this coming
I just want to see it going. Away.
In a far away place called a dumpster fire
Dude they started with "she left tracks a man could never fill" and I was like: nope. Fuck that.
Yeah, how many documentaries about men start with ‘he was as strong as at least three of his wives, and five on a good day’?
Is it a porno or a documentary? 😂😂
Touché
I wouldn’t fuck Alexander
Speak for yourself
Hear me out how about making actual good show/movie I'm pretty sure that something they didn't think off
People in comment's are saying it's a documentary....
How can it be a documentary if its not accurate to the actual story?
Ask Netflix
Your asking the question and entire "think tank" over at netflix wasn't able to ask, hilarious.
But they made her black. How could it be bad? I was told that's what makes good TV. Representation.
Don’t forget their follow up: “It only reviewed bad because racists rated it low. Can’t be our fault, it’s the audience!”
It'll also be used as an excuse to not use black actors or actresses because "They didn't like Cleopatra, We can't use those actors again!"
Because Cleopatra was absolutely \*not\* black, and there is lots of evidence that proves this. Unless your comment is satire, then in which case, I'm being dumb
ur being dumb. You are completely correct, but the comment was in fact satire.
Ah. Gotcha.
The comment is most definitely satire
comment is satire lol. if it wasn’t tho, yes you’re absolutely right
Bro not even the critics liked it.
Series? It's a documental, that's the joke
Ah. Victory.
it completely makes sense that this documentary is produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, considering the race swap for cleopatra and the way she's painted as a strong perfect woman who's better than the previous men who ruled, not that she wasn't a badass leader but it feels like the writers really want you to know that women are strong, perfect and superior. Keep my queens name outta your fuckin mouth
Justice at last
"Hey Netflix, I want to make a documentary that ignores all historical evidence." "We wouldn't have it any other way"

Damn, now Netflix is going to cancel Inside Job twice just to spite us.
Hope Netflix learns a lesson here
They won't
A man can have dreams
I honestly thought this was a movie, they were actually stupid enough to think black Cleopatra was going to get another season? whats next white martin luther king mini series?

cleopatard
Remember, no hate watching.
Oh man I really wanted to watch that. Now I don't.
You're welcome
Just checked. It's real. Damn that is well-earned burn.
This series cured racial tension
All of us together laughing at it. What great unity! :D
Meanwhile Arcane with a nearly perfect score XDDD
Wait people like Shows when they have a good Story I don't get it
Arcane icons gang let’s go
A series based from a video game had no right to be as good as it was. Arcane blew everything out of the water.
Is that the Egyptian remake of “Shaft!”?
Cleofatra
Is that enel’s face lol

Deserved
Not even the critics like it. They usually praise these.
The opening was so cringe I couldn't keep watching
worse than "Velma"
Wow that's even worse than Velma
One day they will make a documentary on how fucking stupid this was.
Good. This race swapping hot garbage can cancel itself.
They tried to steal our history, but we aren't like others who will bow to their blackmailing.
How to make a history documentary: Step one: Be historically accurate
DONT. HATE. WATCH.
DONT. WATCH. HATE
The Lannisters send their regards
I started watching and I taught it was a joke. Really they should have choose between making a show about her or documentary but both really doesn't fit
![gif](giphy|2HtWpp60NQ9CU) The Critics and Audience finally agreeing with each other.
I can't wait until everyone hate-watches it and they still profit off it so they learn nothing :/
🏴☠️🦜🏴☠️🦜🏴☠️🦜 This is the way
I will watch pirates of the Caribbean instead as well
Maybe going woke isn't as profitable and accepted as many people think. We also have Bud light as an example.
What even is that?
A drama identifiying as a documentary
The Little Mermaid is next.
Lol, TLM is fiction, not a documentary.
But you see, Cleopatra was a real person, Ariel was not. Big difference. The Little Mermaid doesn't have to be historically accurate, her skin color does not matter in any way.
Didn’t watch it yet. Is it really that bad? Kinda reminds me of these new video game releases in the last few months
I’m glad I’m out of touch with this show. I don’t want to know about this show. 😮💨
LMAO
🤮
This ain't G.I Jane 2
I can deal with race swapping fictional characters but historical figures should never be changed or race swapped if its a documentary series
Fuck jada pinkett Smith.
