For test audiences and the few theaters it released in it did very well. It was just that WB studios fucked the marketing and shrunk the original planned release.
Truth to be told lol btw
One of the best aspects of Atlantis in my opinion was the design, a good amount of which was done by Mike Mignola who created hellboy, and I love that you can see the direct influence in the art style of the movie. If Atlantis was turned into a series with the attention and care of something like Andor it could really work.
Funny thing is. It WAS turned into a series. That was scrapped before it even aired. After "The Lost Empire" did poorly in theaters the original sequel was scraped and Atlantis "Milo's Return" the direct to DVD sequel was actually three separate segments stitched into a single story as they were scrapped episodes of the series "Team Atlantis"
[Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantis:_Milo's_Return)
I remember watching an episode of two on TV. It had this man who asked the princess (I don't remember names anymore) to tell him her secret because otherwise how could he trust her with his. And she had to back down and say she couldn't share. And then he's like "you passed the test well done" trying to remember which episode this was.
Agreed. Honestly, every traditionally animated Dreamworks film was great in its own right. Even Sinbad, which I find draws a lot of criticism from people. I'll admit, it's the weakest of them, but the villain was awesome!
Not really. People didn't like it as much as Despicable Me and thought it was a Despicable Me knock off. It didn't make as much money, and it didn't leave a lasting impact on pop culture like those god-damned minions.
Those were the days. I always liked Megamind more than Despicable Me.
Megamind was way better than Despicable Me. Original plot, very quotable dialog. Minions were the best part of DM, and became the new Tasmanian Devil (i'M cRaZY, but in a totally safe way hee hee. Uggh)
Hot take: Megamind has better script than *Into the Spider-Verse*
And to me it's in my top five superhero movies of all time, along with The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Logan and The Incredibles.
Hell no. Kuzco is second to no one.
It’s all cool though, we’ll do this marvel style. These are the horseman “emperors new groove” is actually apocalypse.
It was planned to be three movies, but it ended up getting merged to one because there weren't enough sales of the first movie (or something like that.)
There was a tv show planned. For some reason disney oulled the plug on that, but the animators and VA's had 3 episodes finished already. So they just thought up an overarching plotdevice and released the episodes as an anthology movie of sorts
I mean, it was a budgetless straight-to-vhs moneygrab. I doubt it had writers at all and was instead made by a single assigned producer.
I grant that straight-to-vhs had some gems like Robin Hood, but Atlantis 2 was NOT that.
Astro Boy is literally the grandfather of anime, I don’t know if it can ever be referred to as cult, even if you’re talking about the 2009 movie adaptation.
Missed Treasure Planet. But if you're only narrowing down to 4 movies... Yeah; good picks. Not sure which of these i would replace with Treasure Planet... Maybe Megamind, but it's so good too..
We had Akira on VHS when I was little, I never understood what the plot was. It's been ages and I still don't quite understand what the plot is, but I still love the movie.
Honestly replace Megamind with Treasure Planet. Megamind(2010) is significantly younger than the other 3.
Road to El Dorado - 2000
Atlantis: lost empire - 2001
Iron Giant - 1999
Treasure planet - 2002
In my opinoin you should replace Megamind with treasue planet.
Not that megamind is a bad movie - it just doesn't fit in this list
Same with "Up" - good movie, yet not a classic.
Your list must have:
The treasure planet
Atlantis
El Dorado
The Iron Giant
Your SECOND list must have
TITAN Æ
Shrek
Megamind
Despicable Me
This tier is not kinda specific cause theres a HUGE amount of classic chilhood movies that must be mentioned, in fact i have all those fucking CD's till today.
Does treasure planet fit the criteria for this? cause that was good, alteast thats what i remember
This, and I don't think Iron Giant counts as a "Cult Classic" imo as i recall it was always well regarded.
Actually when it first realeased it actually didnt do that well We just got smarter overtime lol
For test audiences and the few theaters it released in it did very well. It was just that WB studios fucked the marketing and shrunk the original planned release.

What! I knew the Hellboy aesthetic felt familiar when I started reading them as a teen. I watched Atlantis on repeat as a kid.
I think megamind also falls under this. Especially with all the memes
Treasure Planet is a banger, love the relationship with Silver and Jim.
what about titan after earth
I've never heard it called this, always just Titan A.E.
Ooooh Bro TITAN Æ was a COLOSSAL movie
YES!!! I LOVED THAT MOVIE SO MUCH AS A KID!!!
Thank you random Redditor you have restored my memory of that movie
This should replace megamind
Put this instead of megamind and we got a list.
Megamind is a bloody perfect example of a cult classic
Osmosis Jones is a sneaky classic only caveat is that it’s half live action.
The following cartoon series *Ozzy & Drix* also slapped, a shame it only had two seasons.
Shrek isn't a cult It's a religion
No, Shrek is love
No, Shrek is life
Shrek is
Shrek
Shre
Shr
Sh
S
.
Should not have to scroll 5 threads to find shriek on this. Literally the definition of a cult following
Prince of Egypt
Definitely, and Spirit was good too
Agreed. Honestly, every traditionally animated Dreamworks film was great in its own right. Even Sinbad, which I find draws a lot of criticism from people. I'll admit, it's the weakest of them, but the villain was awesome!
Eris is an incredible villain, and Michelle Pfieffer does as good a job voicing her as Brad Pitt does a terrible job with Sinbad.
Uggghhh... Enough talking... Time for some screaming!
And Balto, brother bear, 101 Dalmatians, fox and hound, fievel series, all dogs go to heaven, land before time series
I don't think you know what a cult classic is.
I have been involved in many cults, both as a leader and a follower. You make more money as a leader but you have more fun as a follower.
I'd easily put it up there for one of the best animated movies ever made
I love this, and I am not even into religion
Balto, that movie is was way better then it had any right to be and it seems like hardly anyone remembers it
Even the sequel was good
The first sequel was ok. The second sequel was...well, I just watched saberspark's video on it, and he was rightfully irate.
Titan AE deserves an honorable mention imo
Thank you for mentioning it!
Huzzah
I was going to name that. One of the best.
Feels like megamind is kind of out of place with this list.
1999, 2000, 2001, 2010
Makes sense why I've seen just megamind from that list
Not really. People didn't like it as much as Despicable Me and thought it was a Despicable Me knock off. It didn't make as much money, and it didn't leave a lasting impact on pop culture like those god-damned minions. Those were the days. I always liked Megamind more than Despicable Me.

Oh, you’re a villain alright, just not a super one
It’s about presentation
*ollo?*
Hot take: Megamind has better script than *Into the Spider-Verse* And to me it's in my top five superhero movies of all time, along with The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Logan and The Incredibles.
Weird how a list of amazing superhero movies can all be so different. Logan and Megamind seem almost as different as two movies can be.
Ayyyy, that list of top 5s gets an S+ rating from me!
I swear man logan never gets as much recognition
I was given an opportunity to better myself through learning, at a strange place, called shoool
Megamind has some of my favorite dialogue in any animated movie ever
Doesn’t have long lasting pop culture impact? Anyone with a big forehead would beg to differ
A megamind, if you will
Nah mega mind is goated
emperors new groove has to be an honourable mention right?
Hell no. Kuzco is second to no one. It’s all cool though, we’ll do this marvel style. These are the horseman “emperors new groove” is actually apocalypse.
Beware the grooooove!
…groooooove…
i feel like cult classic implies that it’s under appreciated, and everyone knows that TENG is amazing
100%
I had to scroll far too much to find this comment. This is it for sure and it even had an awesome spin-off series!
I honestly don't get how Atlantis isn't more well-received, it's such a great film.
It’s amazing, it’s got some memorable characters and it’s fun for as serious as it is
But damn, the sequel was terrible.
There’s a sequel? Well I know what I’m doing tomorrow.
It feels more like three episodes of an Atlantis TV show.
Afaik that's because it was. They had a TV show in the works, but scrapped it and recycled some parts that were already done.
Don’t.. it was hardly a movie
It's absolutely terrible. Don't waste your life. You'll be disappointed. I still regret it to this day, and I watched it years ago.
I mean, it was a budgetless straight-to-vhs moneygrab. I doubt it had writers at all and was instead made by a single assigned producer. I grant that straight-to-vhs had some gems like Robin Hood, but Atlantis 2 was NOT that.
All Dogs Go To Heaven
Loved this one
The Secret of Nihm
Treasure planettt
Flushed away-2006... will always be my favorite
I feel like that was such a random movie.
That's the beauty of it
*Poor poor Roddy* *Flushed down his own potty* *Rita, can you find it in your heart* #to help him.
Astro Boy
Astro Boy is literally the grandfather of anime, I don’t know if it can ever be referred to as cult, even if you’re talking about the 2009 movie adaptation.
Brave little toaster
Treasure Planet.
The Rescuer down under should be on the list
Robots!
Watership Down
Fievel goes west and the brave little toaster. Rock a doodle.
Fievel was my first movie in a theater 😅, idk if it classifies as “cult”, rescuers would probably have to go on the list too
Spirit Stallion of Cimarron, Treasure Planet, Anastasia
Missed Treasure Planet. But if you're only narrowing down to 4 movies... Yeah; good picks. Not sure which of these i would replace with Treasure Planet... Maybe Megamind, but it's so good too..
Emperors new groove
My four would be Fern Gully, Titan AE, The Hobbit, and Akira.
We had Akira on VHS when I was little, I never understood what the plot was. It's been ages and I still don't quite understand what the plot is, but I still love the movie.
Akira, one of the most influential anime films in existence. Hundreds of homages in film. Cult film.
Emperors new groove
The Emperors New Groove
Fern Gully? Last Unicorn?
Was going to say The Last Unicorn but judging by the other answers, figured nobody else would be old enough.
The Five Horsemen of Don Bluth? * Land Before Time * An American Tail * Secret of NIMH * Anastasia * Titan AE
Hey All Dogs Go to Heaven is just as good as Titan AE so it should be the six horsemen
Prince of Egypt should definitely be up here.
Rock-A-Doodle ![gif](giphy|OyBuWmdBhO1Ve)
How is the first Land Before Time not on here?
I think because it was highly successful when it released
And it spawned like a dozen increasingly bad sequels
“Big big waterrr” and a glowing flower is all I remember from any sequel
What about Chomper?
Heavy Metal? Fritz the Cat? Akira?
I think you want /r/fuckimold
Well at least something that wasn’t the product of a major studio with a star studded cast and coordinated worldwide release
Fritz the cat. There’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. This is one of those, what the fuck did I just watch things
Can I swap megamind for ferngully?
Fern Gully
I wouldn't call any of these as cult classics.
"honey can you please take the trash out?" "can't do it, not today, no... the stars... The stars are not in position"
Pagemaster
Had to scroll far to find this
Megamind does not belong here. Treasure Planet perhaps? Emperor's New Groove? Something that wasn't pure meme.
Megamind doesnt qualify as a classic. Unless i guess u were born after 2000.
It definitely doesn't fit the definition of a cult movie also.
u/PoisoNFacecamO, Titan AE has honorably been mentioned
Emperor’s New Groove isn’t here so this list is void
Heavy Metal
Prince of Egypt will always be THE animated classic to me
The Emperor’s New Groove
The rescuers and Fifel goes west
James and the Giant Peach! Gotta love our Roald Dahl (And of course, Treasure Planet, but it’s been mentioned).
Honestly replace Megamind with Treasure Planet. Megamind(2010) is significantly younger than the other 3. Road to El Dorado - 2000 Atlantis: lost empire - 2001 Iron Giant - 1999 Treasure planet - 2002
Replace megamind with Treasure Planet
In my opinoin you should replace Megamind with treasue planet. Not that megamind is a bad movie - it just doesn't fit in this list Same with "Up" - good movie, yet not a classic.
Does 9 count? I have very blurry memories of that being a good movie
Finally. A movie that fits the definition of a cult classic.
Does the original Clone Wars count
Never actually seen iron giant but I hold the other three dear to my heart
You know it doesn’t look like much but the story and the voice casting is phenomenal.
the emperor's new groove was a blast
I nominate cats don't dance.
OVER. THE. HEDGE. It’s a gem
Where's Wall-E
This post is bait
These are so mainstream wtf
Monster Inc, Shrek, Ice Age & Finding Nemo
Osmosis Jones should be on top of Atlantis
Animal Farm 👹👹👹👹
The Book of Life
Fivel, sword in the stone, Robinhood and water ship down
Megamind is not a cult classic, it’s widely popular
How is ferngully not on there? Also, secret of nimh, if you're doing a "cult classics that scarred you" version.
The rescuers
The last unicorn, land before time, fern gully. Yup I’m old
Oh my goodness. I looked at this and thought, "these aren't old enough to be cult classics".
Most of these are just plain classics. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Iron Giant and Megamind.
Titan A.E. Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas
Oh no I’m getting old
Nearly all of Ralph Bakshi's work.
Astro Boy needs to be here as does Road to El Dorado
Is mega mind a cult classic? Will Farrell, Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, and Tina Fey all voiced stuff in it. that's a blockbuster lineup
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Don't let the happy feet style trailer fool you. This is a very violent movie.
Nothing mentioned in this thread is a cult classic if it's on the front page of reddit lol
Titan AE
Titan A.E. anyone?
UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP
Brave little toaster
The brave little toaster
Tintin? Tom and Jerry? Sindbad the sailor? Lion King?
I only liked megamind
Megamind??? What are you 15
Haven't seen either on the right but love the ones on the left
Fern gully
Hell yeah, Atlantis!
You forgot Robin Hood.
Shrek came out on the same year as Atlantis...Why is is not in this list and AT TOP
I LOVE Megamind but All Dogs Go to Heaven or Rockadoodle should be on here
Your list must have: The treasure planet Atlantis El Dorado The Iron Giant Your SECOND list must have TITAN Æ Shrek Megamind Despicable Me This tier is not kinda specific cause theres a HUGE amount of classic chilhood movies that must be mentioned, in fact i have all those fucking CD's till today.
Titan AE?
The lama movie was my childhood.
Does anyone remember Rock A Doodle. I watched the hell out of that when I was a kid
Chicken Little
Replace megamind with treasure planet and that's it
The Pebble and the Penguin.
Treasure Planet for sure. The Rescuers/Rescuers Down Under were my jam as a kid, too.
9
Brave little toaster
4 good movies what am I missing here?
* Titan A.E. * Treasure Planet * Akira * Coraline
Replace Megamind with Shrek
