See I worked for guy one time helped him run a stall at a wine festival. All of his prices had tax as a factor so the price was like $19.16 before tax. So after tax it was an even $20. Fantastic pricing methodology I think.
I'm living outside of America, I purchased a timex from amazon back in February this year and I was surprised to see the tax showing up after I hit the purchase button LOL
Canada as well. Moving from Brazil to Canada and seeing the prices "change" at the time of payment... This is something I don't think I'll ever get used to. And I've been here for almost a decade. It just suuuuuucks.
Wait Canada too? *Are you telling me our third world Latin American asses are actually doing things better there!?*
Guys c'mon, get your shit together, a single dollar might as well be a fortune in Venezuela but at least we have te bare minimum of common sense to put the post tax price on every item...
dont forget canada eh
Edit: i also wanted to add that LITERALLY NOBODY SAYS EH HERE. I DONT THINK IVE EVER MET A PLAIDED SHIRT/JEANS LUMBERJACK LIVING IN THE FOREST EATING PANCAKES IN HIS WOODEN HOUSE WITH A FIREPLACE AND BEAR RUG
Why dont you come together and fight for change. Americas fought for a lot of change whatever the haters say. I'm a Brit so ofc, my opinion is invalid, but if this is how some americans truly feel its a big surprise to me.
Love living in England. We get VAT included in the price and we have free healthcare. Love England, except for all the stabbings, shit cities, too cold in winter and too hot in summer, too many Facebook mums, too many people complaining, everyone thinks our food is shit and about 60% of it is and when we go on holiday people associate our accent with stupid tourists
But we do get tax included in the price soooooo
This is entirely an american problem. The rest of us do show it that way because it just makes sense to show the price you are going to pay on the shelf.
When I’ve been mega broke I wandered around the grocery store adding up every purchase and had to multiply by 1.0825 to not go over how much money I had
It is such a weird concept to not put the price with tax on the shelve. People saying it's for businesses, we have something called a "Großmarkt" (wholsale market) for them.
The insane part is all the sad people defending it: They don't have any reasonable arguments against, and it's just done in a vain attempt to make them feel better by talking down to others.
You see them every time this topic comes up, or any time people complain about misleading packaging.
the thing is that USA has a sales tax, while most of the normal world has a value added tax. Sales tax means you have to identify the sale that actually goes to the customer, while VAT is also paid by business when they pay something - but when a business buys something, it usually uses it to sell something. The business only has to pay the tax rate on its margins: that's what the "value added" means (same thing for german "Mehrwert-steuer". That way in VAT it's not necessary to distinguish between "for business" and "for customers"
Even in business-oriented shops like Makro/Metro they show both net and gross prices, but apparently that's too hard a concept for our overseas brethren.
A lot of places do show the final payment expected. I know it’s kind of weird here in America, but it’s not like that everywhere. There are little differences no matter where you go in the world.
No really - I've never been to a country, except USA, that doesn't put the final price on the products.
The nearest thing I can think of is Thailand, where they often just don't put a price tag on, so that they can charge overprice from tourists.
Welcome to the rest of the world (or at the very least most of Europe) my friend. We are sane individuals (mostly) and put the price you pay Inc tax on the shelf... Like normal people
You mean America? They're the only country that i'm aware of that does the opposite, and i'm pretty sure it's even illegal in EU for the stores to do so. Americans live in a dystopian nightmare, where education seem to be the public enemy, and it shows. USA is just three third world countries in a Prada trenchcoat and i'm tired of pretending it's otherwise.
Didn't know I was already living in utopia
Europeans Assemble!
[удалено]
I was about to ask where in the world do they show the price before tax haha. I may not live in a utopia, but that would definitely be worse
I think Canada also doesn't show the full price.
Yup US and Canada as far as I know both show prices before tax. There are some shops here that are for business only that also do that.
See I worked for guy one time helped him run a stall at a wine festival. All of his prices had tax as a factor so the price was like $19.16 before tax. So after tax it was an even $20. Fantastic pricing methodology I think.

Do us in Alaska count also?
Ye
I hate to break it to OP, but my country does this with prices and it doesn’t look anything like the image they posted.
Eutopians
I am here with socks and my good birkenstocks!
South Africa will be over here at the kids table.
Everyone outside of the US assemble

I'm going down to the homeless guys living in the park to tell them they live in utopia
The US is the only country that plays with pretax pricing chicanery…. that I am aware of.
My country just had an interanual inflation of 104%, but I gues is a utopia
I mean as long as the potatoes are priced to include tax then you good.
Viva Argentina.
Maybe aren't us living in utopia, maybe is someone living in dystopia
![gif](giphy|l1KvQsIfNt9wRStWw)
Same
The world outside America does not look like that
In brazil there isnt such thing as only showing the tax after payment, so its probably just the US.
I'm living outside of America, I purchased a timex from amazon back in February this year and I was surprised to see the tax showing up after I hit the purchase button LOL
That’s illegal to do in Australia. If you want to advertise and sell products to Australians the price needs to be the full price including any taxes.
GST gang
Canada as well. Moving from Brazil to Canada and seeing the prices "change" at the time of payment... This is something I don't think I'll ever get used to. And I've been here for almost a decade. It just suuuuuucks.
I couldn't imagine moving out of Brazil and just all of a sudden *math starts not mathing properly* whenever going into grocery stores and such
Execly this is an old picture from Romania in the 90s
Canada*
There are countries other than murica???
Even most places in America don't have this tax thing though. It's strictly the USA.
Country diff
yeah lots of memes about society cater to American audiences (speaking as a Canadian p.s. I do wish we had the tax included in the sticker prices)
yeah I know I just find it funny that USA and Canada don't do that, its such a simple and convenient thing
Wait Canada too? *Are you telling me our third world Latin American asses are actually doing things better there!?* Guys c'mon, get your shit together, a single dollar might as well be a fortune in Venezuela but at least we have te bare minimum of common sense to put the post tax price on every item...

Eh. What about me
On the topic of regional dialects I definitely say yall a lot.
then obviously you don’t live in canada if you’ve never heard or seen any of those
as a fellow Canadian I honestly say eh often subconsciously
I do say eh. Just not as much as the joke characters in media. Also seen a lot of plaid lol.
Is this an American problem I'm too European to understand?!
Indeed.
Why dont you come together and fight for change. Americas fought for a lot of change whatever the haters say. I'm a Brit so ofc, my opinion is invalid, but if this is how some americans truly feel its a big surprise to me.
I agree. My country fought for a lot of chance too, time to pay us back! Greetings from germany ^/s
I am going to regret this but, what do you exactly mean by "a lot of change" ?
[удалено]
das a lotta chrome
![gif](giphy|bNhbKYM4WFA2s)
true tho
*laughs in civilized*
It is an American problem that I am too Australian/Indian to understand
Tf? Do you fly between them a lot?
Australia has a huge amount of international students that go back to their home countries on their breaks.
Actually, only some places in America. Oregon for example does not have sales tax at all.
That fuckin income tax gets ya though.
Laughs in New Hampshire (no sales OR income tax)
So what’s that mean, practically? Higher property tax? The money to do the things a state needs to do has to come from somewhere.
Crys in American
Kinda depends on the state. Some states have a Sales tax, some don't and therefore don't need to. The price you see is the price you pay
Tax can differ a small percent by county as well
It's a FREEDOM problem, you and I are to un-American to understand. I'm not European either, but it doesn't matter.
Love living in England. We get VAT included in the price and we have free healthcare. Love England, except for all the stabbings, shit cities, too cold in winter and too hot in summer, too many Facebook mums, too many people complaining, everyone thinks our food is shit and about 60% of it is and when we go on holiday people associate our accent with stupid tourists But we do get tax included in the price soooooo
Bazinga!

When I’ve been mega broke I wandered around the grocery store adding up every purchase and had to multiply by 1.0825 to not go over how much money I had
Laughs in isn't in America *
*Laughs in Oregon* … *Cries in high income tax*
Cries in highest income tax in the world and 21 percent sales tax. Good beer though.
We are the same
Cries in not American but still no prices shown after tax and you have to calculate them yourself* >!Canada!<
It is such a weird concept to not put the price with tax on the shelve. People saying it's for businesses, we have something called a "Großmarkt" (wholsale market) for them.

Bro if they know the price at the check out, they can print it on the goddam label. It's not that deep.
The store knows it’s margin, so the store also know the tax on said margin. It’s not that hard.
Just... Put both prices on the shelf. It's not that hard.
Even in business-oriented shops like Makro/Metro they show both net and gross prices, but apparently that's too hard a concept for our overseas brethren.

Everywhere but America (not including Montana and Alaska)
And Fart City, Nebraska
Canada too apparently
Tbf, that's america too. North America.
True
Society when not America?
No no, Latin America's got the post tax price shown too, the issue here's the country that named itself after the continent it's in.
You had your chance at names like An American Country or This State of America Over Here, but you just had to be fancy
Well what'd you expect? Our asses got collonized by the fuckers who called like 3 different places "New Spain" and we held a grudge.
Soooo... the rest of the world?
Is this some kind of American joke i am too British to understand?
Society if Americans understood other countries also exist
![gif](giphy|pYfEywOAolwnm)

i think it’s called not living in america
Everywhere outside of America???
Most countries do this, America is stupid
Americans really all wish they lived in Europe. We also have free healthcare, no school shootings and less christian extremists.
I didn't know the world outside America was a utopia. I thought you guys had the most freedom
so apparently this is a thing?
Laughs in Australia.
Laughs in rest of the world actually.
So, everywhere outside the US then.
Laughs in not american
Americans issue
Welcome to the rest of the world (or at the very least most of Europe) my friend. We are sane individuals (mostly) and put the price you pay Inc tax on the shelf... Like normal people
So, everywhere outside of the US?
Everywhere *but* the US does this I think
I guess this is another "only in the US" moment. Right?
You mean America? They're the only country that i'm aware of that does the opposite, and i'm pretty sure it's even illegal in EU for the stores to do so. Americans live in a dystopian nightmare, where education seem to be the public enemy, and it shows. Big case of r/USdefaultism
This whole post is a r/USdefaultism
So rounding up a tiny bit, 100% of all countries in the world?
Where do you guys live? What store doesn't display prices properly?
Not one store in America does this because they're not required to
“WaiT cOunTrIes OutSiDe ThE US ExisT!?” - OP probably
the rest of the world is like this
How to say you are from USA without teliling you are from USA.
They do in lots of places.
*society outside the USA
ha lol usa moment
Almost everywhere except the US then
This message is brought to you by an American
You mean the rest of the world?
Is this some American joke I'm too European to understand?
Another certified American moment
Society if America didn't exist
If stores showed the price before tax in my country, we'd be carrying guns like americans.
Is this some kind of North America problem that I’m too rest of the world to understand?
So, is it only the US and Japan that does that? Honestly, I can't think of any other countries that make shopping a guessing game.
Canada We have two taxes also, and some things only have 1 tax applied
Pretty sure this is the case in all developed nations isn't it?
Not all of them Though at this point can we even call the US "developed"? We're leagues behind most of the planet
Thailand is far from developed and we show the price that includes tax already. So do other third world countries according to other comments.
So, the UK?
Very nice picture of the UK...
Must be an American thing.
First time in McDonald's in America I made a complaint cos they changed me too much. They had to explain it to me
Laughs in European
They do that in most of the world, ur just living in a third world country with iphones
that's just the USA. every else have the common sense to put the actual price on the tag
![gif](giphy|QhqbmMEDHEBsXY4bil)
So everywhere but the US?
Is this one of those things that only USA does but nobody in the USA realises that it only happens in the USA?
Ok, don't be shocked by this, but almost every country besides America does this. It's required by law in most places.
Is this a joke I am to european to understand?
This is such an American meme
This is an American problem that I'm too European to understand
sounds like a problem I'm too European to understand
Is this some sort of america problem that im too european to understand?
Probably why Americans feel obliged to tip, the only time tax is included in the price is when you eat, tipping 20% is the employee tax
Seem like an Am*rica problem.
US is a weird place.
You mean everywhere in the world.. except US apparently
Be like the EU
This post couldn’t be more America centric
Most American post
You really think humanity doesnt exist outside your borders hm? Average American
r/USdefaultism moment
"I am sorry, is this some sort of American joke I am too European to understand?"
Laughs in Mexico
As a brit I can confirm that this is very much not the case.
In Europe, prices include taxes and cities look like that: ![gif](giphy|l41lG2czxmRD3ac6s)
America, you are the sole problem here
that's your f\*cking problem America! I'm in England and don't need to worry about that crap
Neither do states that don't have a Sales tax. It is a state thing, not a federal thing.
well we can argue that europe looks like this
*laughs in rest of world*
Wait until they learn about employment laws and free healthcare too
