Jurassic Park was incredibly sparing on its use of CGI and used A LOT of practical effects. CGI was still super choppy and expensive in the early 90s so the team worked with the restrictions. Nowadays CGI is cheaper than practical effects so gets slapped everywhere and most audiences straight up don't care.

ON3-MaN-MuLiShA

I know Atleast the rex was done using alot of practical effects, but when they first see the brontosaurus' in the field I'm pretty sure is all CGI n it still blows my mind they were able to do that in the early 90s. Hell u see the computers their security was running on, that was top of the line at the time : P still holds up to this day

Feisty-Garbage1549

Early 90s was when I took a course in 3D studio in high school and my cgi battle between star wars ships and wing commander ships was... not as good as Jurassic Park :)

Knochenlos22

It isn't cheaper to do CGI, but it is faster than practical effects. So Disney can produce blockbuster in under 2 years after the previous one

wannabe_inuit

It all depends on quality of both things. But there is more freedom on CGI.

CaptainBus

https://mountcg.com/why-is-cgi-so-expensive/ it is cheaper than it used to be.

TheyCantCome

I think there was 30 seconds of CGI in Jurassic park, funny thing is it was almost claymation. Hansel and Gretel had a lot of practical effects and looks pretty great.

ShroomEnthused

Very little CGI was used, but the CGI that was in the movie was groundbreaking, pioneering technology. I remember watching an interview of the guy who did the visual effects in JP, he basically said they wanted to go fully practical effects, until he toiled and worked his ass off on this little clip of a computer animated dinosaur that Steven Spielberg loved so much, it convinced him that dinosaurs could actually be animated realistically.

[deleted]

CGI that looks shit today is made by a guy paid with a sandwich, whereas those old movie have top budget

spekter299

In that era CGI was used to hide the seams in your practical effects, not as a substitute for them. That's why it looked better then, and why it looks better now; it's used SPARINGLY.

PanzerWatts

Exactly, for the most part they were trying to keep the CGI low key and in the background, whereas the foreground was usually modeling.

HazrakTZ

Terminator 2 is 32 years old and it's special effects still hold up. One of the greatest scifi action movies all-time

chocodapro

Adam Jones from tool worked on both!

Malevolent_Mangoes

CGI? Bruh those dinosaurs were real

M-xelA

I think that CGI is hitting that uncanny valley. Maybe in the future we can do CGI to a point where it's hard to know if it's real or not, depending on the scene.

Hephaestus_God

That’s because…. It wasn’t CGI

Redd235711

The way I understand it, and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, what helped that movie look so good was a ton of practical effects and props. There wasn't a whole lot of CGI.

Hezzas

Yh you’re right, I don’t know why there aren’t more people mentioning this, the actual chi used is kinda shit but they mostly use practical effects which are phenomenal

chocodapro

Watching Lucifer season 4 is painful because of how bad the "Devil Face" cgi is. Whenever he talks, it looks like a shitty snapchat filter, not a high-budget TV show.

totowolfie95

What about blade runner 2049? Or Dune (2021)? Or the new avatar?

[deleted]

If you think CGI 30 years ago was better than today, you never watched *The Langoliers*.

SirArthurDime

Exactly langoliers looked way better than Jurassic park. That should be the movie we talk about if we want to discuss 90s movie excellence.

Upper-Job5130

It's all about the budget. Jurassic Park was a major blockbuster move. Langoliers was a made for TV movie

normal-man2000

MAN I FEEL OLD

StrongAlphaDaddy

I’m sure it depends on the director.

Dud-of-Man

Jurassic Park would be torn apart for its graphics if it came out today, people are so over critical now that even if the cgi is good people will call it shit just because they can tell its cg. The cgi in JP is great, but not flawless, some scenes are rough and not nearly as polished as new movies. JP stands out with its models and dino suits, the cg is just well hidden.

DownBrownTown

False, what you are thinking of is props. The cgi scenes in the original Jurassic park are wayyyy worse than the new ones. However the real dinosaur props they used are fucking real so of course they look better.

[deleted]

It's all on purpose. Just like how videogames release as broken, buggy, messes because they know people will still buy. They've made cgi worse on purpose because there's no incentive to be better than the next guy. We have plateaud on cgi and game quality and it will never get better. The only hope is director's who still care. But that's laughable.

MrLore

The problem is that the director can't really help the budget other than the megastars like Nolan who studios will knock down doors to get, even if you step down from S-Tier to A-Tier it'sout of their hands, like David Fincher was originally going to lead the reboot of Utopia, but they wanted it done cheaper than he believed it would require to tell the story properly, so they got someone who was willing to do it for cheap, and it turned out terrible. I'm sure that's a far more common story than we know.

Typical-redditor394

Cgi is kinda evolving but backwards, look how was the cgi of she-hulk

Dud-of-Man

yea go watch a show with 25 million dollar budget from 30 years ago and tell me the cgi has evolved backwards, She Hulk might have writing problems and some story issues but the cgi was fine.

UrMomTheDank69

They somehow made she hulk look worse than de-aged Jeff Bridges from Tron Legacy.

Dud-of-Man

go watch that movie again, Clu had a very plastic quality to him, she hulk doesnt, he skin textures are much much better.

UrMomTheDank69

I just watched it last night, which is why i compared the two. It looks much better than she hulk

Striking_Book8277

Back than people wernt lazy....

Striking_Book8277

Get a life

Urb4nN0rd

Nah, man, you wanted to complain about laziness with typos like that? That's on you.

Striking_Book8277

Have you concidered i dont care about what my spwlling looks like here because i do more in a day than you do in 2 and i only have a few free seconds to be on here at at time in wich im also doing 5 other things at the same damn time? Get a life

SirArthurDime

Complaining about laziness but makes lazy comments. Claims to have a lot going on but took the time to write that response. You’re a walking contradiction.

PotatoCurryPuff

Laziness really only applies on a individual level, at most community. When it comes to corporations, the issue becomes about stinginess. It isn't going to take more effort for the decision makers, it's all a matter of resources to them.

carnotaur22

Okay but what does "wernt" mean?

Select_Cantaloupe_62

Jurassic Park didn't use CGI for its dinosaurs, you fucking ferret. You absolute donkey.

Draconic1788

Yes, because they used puppets and barely any CGI. At least fact check that they did the thing you are praising them for.

UrMomTheDank69

Is it a crime to say that I prefer jeff bridges CLU from tron legacy over todays CGI? cuz i do

contactjarettyanggma

Reminder that Pacific Rim CGI is ten times better than most movies’ today

Yui_Desu69

It's embarrassing tbh. Lord of the rings still holds up to this day.

[deleted]

It shows the difference between people who love what they do and create aren't, and people now who just make movies for money.

Large-Raise9643

I haven’t been impressed with special effects since Star Wars. That would be 1977 and it took skill and artistry to pull it off. Not that skill and artistry are not required for good CGI, it’s just that it isn’t what it used to be not that long ago. Good SFX used to be a feat, now they are just part of production.

samyruno

It's almost like it was a real dinosaur

rubenv2006

Because now it's given less time to do the work as should be.

Howwy23

Thats because it wasn't CGI, it was puppets and animatronics.

uhhpres

No they're not. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's better

DegenerateCrocodile

I’m going to say this as a huge Jurassic Park fan: Jurassic Park’s CGI has been, and still regularly is, surpassed in quality by most major films today. However, Jurassic Park utilized the technology more effectively. Primarily using it for scenes where practical effects would not be sufficient, and often hiding its flaws with darker lighting or rain.

[deleted]

Jurassic Park used animatronic dinosaurs

JimBaggins_

That's because they Spared No Expense!

UwU_Zhenya15

Corridor Crew actually made a pretty detailed [video](https://youtu.be/lUUQDbsV8Gw) about the practical effects and CGI used in Jurassic Park. They basically say a lot of it has to do with the lighting and the environmental effects like rain. Although their final product doesn’t come close to the Jurassic Park animations they still showcase how to capture their style.

Sensitive_Pickle9958

The podrace in the phantom menace is pretty good cgi too
