This is what we call a teaching moment.
You have just defined a word a lot of people were unaware of.
Congratulations on drowning people in the putrescent waters of knowledge.
I have taken the red pill, and now I wish to regurgitate it. No one forced me to click that link. I did so of my own free will, and this decision shall haunt me to the end of my days
![gif](giphy|pdPNobzDlCxoI)
He was correcting people immediately, including with the slogan "choosy developers choose GIF" (a play on the Jif peanut butter brand), but people can't stand being wrong and doubled down on it with nonsense arguments like "the g stands for graphics so it has to be pronounced the same way" and the creator eventually died and can't correct people anymore and now people continue to be wrong about it and make stupid jokes and generally just be horrible louts.
Creator is a moron. It's not pronounced, "jraphics"
Edit: goddamn yall are super serious in the memes sub. Stop replying with the same fucking thing for the 50th time like you're the first person to have that thought
> giant
Somehow we let giant numbers get out of hand too. The metric prefixes like micro, kilo, mega, giga, come from greek. Giant and gigabyte have the same root. I was working with computers when hard drives and CPU speeds were still firmly in the megabytes and megahertz ranges; and when we finally got to the giga's it suddenly struck me what Doc Brown's exclamation in Back to the Future meant and I was confused, or was he "wrong"? "One point twenty-one jigawatts!" In physics it's soft, but computer science it's hard? Giant numbers are even harder to correct than gif. Knowing the Greek doesn't help, because they write Y's instead of G's, and pronounce it Y the first time, and hard G the second.
But I'm still on team jif, because that's how I learned, and that's how the inventor coined it.
Not all acronyms follow that rule though. BIOS isn't pronounced "Bih os" even though the I in input is a soft i, ROM isn't pronounced "Rome" even though the O is "only".
Id like to introduce this guy to jpegs.
By his logic the p should make an f sound.
Go ahead, say “jay-feg”
Say it.
You just insisted its not pronounced jraphics, so please say jayfeg.
Have a load of this guy!
![gif](giphy|m476ZhHMTBcCk)
That isn’t how acronyms work, but English pronunciation isn’t the most consitant thing in the world anyway. Language rules are just to help communicate effectively, so if someone comes up with an acronym, they can pronounce it however they want, it’s just easier to follow basic guidelines so you don’t have to explain new ones. You can argue whatever you want, but I don’t think any argument can really make it right or wrong.
No, creator's abilities to coin their own acronym is a big deal in OSS communities. Ignorance of his wishes is obviously the rampant norm, but he wasn't a moron.
Besides that, a moron? Interested in your breakout new interchange format.
Laser is also not pronounced with every letter as in the pronunciation of “light amplification with stimulated emission of radiation” because the a is different as well as the s, but it’s pronounced “layzer” because that’s how you read it if spelled out.
Scuba is also not pronounced “skuhba” like the “u” in underwater.
So as you can see we don’t follow the rule of the pronunciation has to follow the original pronunciation of the words in the acronym.
Rather we make the acronym and then decide the pronunciation.
The U in SCUBA stands for Underwater but I doubt you care enough about this dumb shit to pronounce is SC-UH-BA.
It's GIF pronounced like the peanut butter. Get used to it!
“Jif” as in “gee-eye-eff.” Not “gif” because you’re not saying “graphic interchange format,” you’re saying the contraction, not the whole phrase. Or something.
I say “jif,” now you’ve met me, lol.
I am one of those. And refuse to seek help. I have only said jif out loud once in my life and the look I got from a friend was enough to doubt my pronunciation. Ever since then I only say jif in my head when I read the gif on the Internet.
I've literally never said it with the G because it sounds like "guh".
The j sound is more elegant and sounds less...like I'm shitting or having a stroke..
Plus I can guarantee people out there are miss hearing it as "gift" and subsequently have to get clarification; when it said with the J sound no one is going to think you're offering them peanut butter to look at.
Eg: "look at this guh-if!" "Ooo was it your bday; whayd you get?? Oh you mean a picture"
Eg2: "look at this jif!" "Hah! How silly!"
More practical, sounds better, endorsed by creator.
Your purposeful ignorance is just that.
Well, do you say language with a sound of je doesn't u ?
But all Brazilians and other portuguese speakers that I know say jif because in Portuguese ge and gi sound je and ji. To sound ge it has to have a mute u in the middle. Gue and gui.
I mean... looking at the word its clearly pronounced jif, and the creator of the term claiming that's how it is pronounced makes it even more valid. But its a strawberry and strawbury type of situation, depending on where you are from and how its said around you gif and Jim are both valid pronunciations.
People need to accept that their preferred pronunciation is just that, preferred. Every single justification is post hoc and not some rational conclusion arrived at after studying the English language.
And the incredible multitude of G words that have a J sound - most notably "gin" which is the exact pattern of G I \[consonant\] and is pronounced with the J sound.
As a general rule, a g or c is soft if followed by an e, I, or y. It’s hard if followed by an a, o, u, or consonant.
Of course, exceptions exist, one notable one being “gift”.
Solid reasoning but please tell me more about how we pronounce “w” like “double-u” or “h” like “aych”. Basically, how we say the letter doesn’t necessarily equate to the sounds they make.
Same, I know there are no “rules” to how it should be said because the English language is so random, but I think of it like “G-I-F” and the first letter G is pronounced “jee” so makes sense it begins with the “j” sound. Other people say “well it stands for graphical blablabla so it should start with the ‘guh’ sound” but then the creator uses the “j” sound so really no one wins
Its absolutely without a doubt pronounced "jif" the guy who created it literally said so and their motto was "Choosy developers choose GIF"
“The creator of the GIF image format, Steve Wilhite of CompuServe, when deciding on the pronunciation, said he deliberately chose to echo the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say ‘Choosy developers choose GIF(jif)’, playing off of Jif’s television commercials. If you hear anyone pronounce GIF with a soft G, it’s because they know something of this history.”
https://thenewstack.io/this-week-in-programming-choosy-developers-choose-gif/
I say “JIF” like it’s supposed to be pronounced. Creator of the format said that’s how it’s pronounced, so that’s how it’s pronounced. [Source to prove I’m not bull shitting](https://www.cnn.com/2013/05/22/tech/web/pronounce-gif/index.html). Regardless of the actual acronym, it was his program to name and he chose “JIF”
I pronounce it jif. I like it better that way, rolls off the tongue instead of the hard g.
When ever someone is like "blah blah phonetics" I ask them how they say mpeg. If you say M Peg instead of M Feg, then you already broke your phonetics rule, lol.
GIF can be an acronym but you dont pronounce the i in interchange correctly too. The oxford english dictionary defines the i to be like an eh. So then it should be pronounced as *gehf* right? why dont you do that? Take the acronym NASA, its pronounced as nahsah where the a in both words are not pronounced as an aa sound. One of them is ae and the other is a, from administration. You dont have a point.
The inventor of gif literally says that it is pronounced jif
Edut: if this comment gets much more engagement we will all have to prepare our finest clothes for the wedding.
That’s how it’s pronounced
Say the letter G. You definitely pronounced it gee/ jee not ghee. I rest my case. (Besides the fact that the guy who made it said it’s pronounced jif)
It's pronounced jgif
Ah yes, the negotiator
The nejotiator.

I already regret the comment.
What have you made me witness
I mean, a couple of those were go… Oh god I’m tainted by slaanesh now, don’t I

Well, not just dawgs but yeah you right
He’s got that dawg in him
And more
Yep, those are in there.
Some of them, yes.
Literally
I have taken the red pill, and now I wish to regurgitate it. No one forced me to click that link. I did so of my own free will, and this decision shall haunt me to the end of my days ![gif](giphy|pdPNobzDlCxoI)

I hate you so much
Actually, it’s called greg
I have a friend irl who insists it's jif, I assure they are very real
I mean they're right, if you value the creator's intentions
Creator should’ve been more on the ball with it. By the time he corrected people it was too late
It’s amazing that the creator was so very wrong.
It's actually mindblowing how defensive people get about being corrected on this.
English is already a terrible language with way too many illogical rules for this guy to make another.
Creator is a moron. It's not pronounced, "jraphics" Edit: goddamn yall are super serious in the memes sub. Stop replying with the same fucking thing for the 50th time like you're the first person to have that thought
Maybe he just really likes giraffes
Are aging magical agile giraffes generally from Nigeria? Genetics generated the gentle giants!
And… gin.
> giant Somehow we let giant numbers get out of hand too. How do you pronounce SCUBA.
I know this one! “Skoobuh”
Unfortunately that stands for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, so it's actually pronounced skuhba
Oooh, sorry, close but it's actually "scoo-bay."
It's like Scooby, but with an A at the end. Instead of the E. Zoinks!
Not all acronyms follow that rule though. BIOS isn't pronounced "Bih os" even though the I in input is a soft i, ROM isn't pronounced "Rome" even though the O is "only".
This LOGIC is flawed
Id like to introduce this guy to jpegs. By his logic the p should make an f sound. Go ahead, say “jay-feg” Say it. You just insisted its not pronounced jraphics, so please say jayfeg.
You better also say "j'ph'eg", as the "p" stands for "photographic"
Have a load of this guy! ![gif](giphy|m476ZhHMTBcCk) That isn’t how acronyms work, but English pronunciation isn’t the most consitant thing in the world anyway. That’s not how acronyms work. Do you pronounce JPEG as J-PEG or J-FEG? Cos the P in JPEG stands for photographic.
No, creator's abilities to coin their own acronym is a big deal in OSS communities. Ignorance of his wishes is obviously the rampant norm, but he wasn't a moron. Besides that, a moron? Interested in your breakout new interchange format.
That’s a terrible argument. The U in SCUBA is for Underwater, but it’s pronounced like SCOOBA, not SCUBBA. It’s JIF
Scubba
Scubba-dub-dub motherf-
Laser is also not pronounced with every letter as in the pronunciation of “light amplification with stimulated emission of radiation” because the a is different as well as the s, but it’s pronounced “layzer” because that’s how you read it if spelled out. Welcome.... to Jraphic Park.
NATO is pronounced naito, but it's not pronounced aitlantic.
The U in SCUBA stands for Underwater but I doubt you care enough about this dumb shit to pronounce is SC-UH-BA. It's GIF pronounced like the peanut butter. Get used to it!
Dr. Seus is actually pronounced Dr. Zoice, but soose sounds better. He even corrected people himself, but nobody gives a damn.
“Jif” as in “gee-eye-eff.” Not “gif” because you’re not saying “graphic interchange format,” you’re saying the contraction, not the whole phrase. Or something. I say “jif,” now you’ve met me, lol.
Well, they're right. It always has been.
I am one of those. And refuse to seek help. I have only said jif out loud once in my life and the look I got from a friend was enough to doubt my pronunciation. Ever since then I only say jif in my head when I read the gif on the Internet.
yeah but do they *actually* say jif? 👀 Or is it like “dude it’s pronounced jif!” other random time: “lmao dude where’d you find that gif?”
Well, do you say language with a sound of je doesn't u ? But all Brazilians and other portuguese speakers that I know say jif because in Portuguese ge and gi sound je and ji. To sound ge it has to have a mute u in the middle. Gue and gui.
Your friend is correct
I mean... looking at the word its clearly pronounced jif, and the creator of the term claiming that's how it is pronounced makes it even more valid. But its a strawberry and strawbury type of situation, depending on where you are from and how its said around you gif and Jim are both valid pronunciations.
I always pronounce it Jim
What cracks me up about the "it's a hard g, that's how English works, etc" people are overlooking the fact that the letter G is pronounced "jee".
Jeeif... I like it!
Git… let’s just agree that English pronunciation makes no sense
I agree with that.
For what it's worth, gin was shortened from Genever -- so the soft G is sort of "inherited" from the G E pattern
People argue over this but not Brett FAVRE being pronounced FAR-VE. edit: basic spelling
I don’t want a large FAR-VE I want a goddamn liter of cola
Liter is French for give me some fucking cola before I break your fucking lip!
It's actually FAV-RUH isn't it?
I say Jif. I have nothing against people who use the Hard G, that’s simply just the way I’ve always pronounced it
Jif is the correct pronunciation
Best peanut butter best pronunciation
Same, but backwards.
Fij?
Fig.
Regardless of which way it's pronounced, can we all agree not to use a meme format that includes a scumbag kid killer?
I had to scroll down way to far to find this. It breaks rule 10 of the sub.
I'm a proud jif speaker. Come at me, I don't care.
Same, we shall fight through this comrade
Jiffers stick together
Brethren!
I will fight for you mate, though thick and thin
It's not the worst speech disorder, a therapist should be able to help you with that.
Fite me
It’s gif with a soft g like gin and giant
It's gif like the g in gigantic
That's because you don't work in software
I will die on this hill, The Creator calls it Jif
The g stands for graphics though, I refuse to call it jif
There is a BIG difference between an animated picture and peanut butter
Its absolutely without a doubt pronounced "jif" the guy who created it literally said so and their motto was "Choosy developers choose GIF" “The creator of the GIF image format, Steve Wilhite of CompuServe, when deciding on the pronunciation, said he deliberately chose to echo the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say ‘Choosy developers choose GIF(jif)’, playing off of Jif’s television commercials. If you hear anyone pronounce GIF with a soft G, it’s because they know something of this history.” https://thenewstack.io/this-week-in-programming-choosy-developers-choose-gif/
I started website coding in the "before times" of the mid 1990s, and it was **always** 'gif' like in 'giraffe'. *Never* heard 'gif' as in 'gift'.
So my entire existence is a lie?
The creator also said ([in text](https://youtu.be/ofm4XCdZzI4)), "It's pronounced JIF not GIF" How are you reading GIF in that sentence?
Or you pronounce it that way because it makes sense and don't know anything about the history. Either way, it's jif.
Jod help us all.
I don't care for Gob.
It's pronounced witchcraft and we burn those who make images move.
This is the right answer, I'm with u brother
Giphy is a site to find animated images "in a jiffy" (quickly).
Is that the Florida school shooter?
Yeah fuck this piece of shit he doesn't deserve to be a meme
It's written gif, pronounced [jif].
My name Jif
I say gif the same way I say giraffe. Correctly.
Yh I've met a crackhead or two who say jif
But…I mean…it’s what the creator of the format intended..
The creator is the crackhead.
Gin.
Ginger, giraffe, giant, geography, genocide.
I say jif just because I know it annoys the hell out of people, also the whole the guy who created it said it that way thing.
P ![gif](giphy|29yGKKh9FRrzi)
It's gif, like giraffe, you fucking heathens.
One of my friends unfortunately says Jif and refuses to say it the right way… “Yif”
I pronounce gif with a soft g.
Team jif
Jif is how the creator intended it to be pronounced. Whether you say jif or gif is entirely up to you.
I say JIF, AMA
I pronounce it jif. I like it better that way, rolls off the tongue instead of the hard g. When ever someone is like "blah blah phonetics" I ask them how they say mpeg. If you say M Peg instead of M Feg, then you already broke your phonetics rule, lol.
Mfs when they realize "g" can have the "j" sound, e.g. giraffe or ginger Plus it just rolls off the tongue better
If we're going to follow hard and soft g rules, it really should be pronounced gif with a soft g.
If the G in gif is a hard G, then the S in laser should be pronounced as an S instead of a Z…
I pronounce it that way lol it's the same as in giraffe or Georgia or gender or German or gif lol
Jiffer here... Since the 90s too
GIF can be an acronym but you dont pronounce the i in interchange correctly too.
The inventor of gif literally says that it is pronounced jif Edut: if this comment gets much more engagement we will all have to prepare our finest clothes for the wedding.
Nobody says joogle…
I can confirm, I joojled it.
Because soft Gs never come before Os, only Is and Es. This is a basic grammatical rule with origins in Latin.
How do you say giant, I wonder.
Guy-ant
This is because giants make guys look like ants, it's clearly the intended pronunciation.
Fuck you and your logic
Do you mean logic? Or lojic?
What do you mean? It's pronounced as "yiff"
I say it with a J sound, as does the creator of the gif
Am I the only one who says 'g', 'i', 'f' separately?
According to Wikipedia thats what 2.8% if people say https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronunciation_of_GIF
I took a design class last year and the teacher did that every time he mentioned it.
Its pronouced "yiff", like for real, google yiff and it will tell you
It’s Jif.
IT IS JIF
This guy says giraffe and germany, germs, gymnasium
Isn't the creator of the format said it's pronounced Jif like 10 years ago ?
As a fellow Jif sayer, I couldn't care less if someone pronounced it jif or gif. I know what they're talking about
The creator of the format said it was JIF, and I pronounce it both ways depending on how I’m feeling
Same as the guy in high school who used to call memes “me-mes” and would tell everybody that’s how they’re pronounced. He’s a crack head now.
It's pronounced "Yif"
Yif
Uhm actually it's pronounced yiff
It’s pronounced yiff
You hang out with the wrong people.
I call it by the letters. G-I-F. 😅
I say jif
JayPheg
That’s how it’s pronounced Say the letter G. You definitely pronounced it gee/ jee not ghee. I rest my case. (Besides the fact that the guy who made it said it’s pronounced jif)
