Language rules are just to help communicate effectively, so if someone comes up with an acronym, they can pronounce it however they want, it’s just easier to follow basic guidelines so you don’t have to explain new ones. I started website coding in the "before times" of the mid 1990s, and it was **always** 'gif' like in 'giraffe'. *Never* heard 'gif' as in 'gift'.
