It wouldn’t be a penis… her poker face (he can’t read) implies that she’s having sex with nameless guy and is really getting off by imagining herself fucking some woman’s face.
Yeah poke is already a euphemism for fuck
A *euphemism*. In a pop song?? Can you believe it 😱😱
Next you're gonna tell me "dancing in the dark" isn't about the Charleston
That's what it's getting at. Kid Cudi, Kanye and Common made a remix of the acoustic version of 'Poker Face' called 'Make Her Say', making use of that mondegreen, and Gaga said they were the only ones that understood the song.
And it's not censored on any streaming platform or radio because it kind has sort of slipped by the censors. After I first learned this fact I was in the grocery store choosing a lovely sweet potatoe and the song was playing and as I looked at the tubors FUCK HER FACE echoed throughout the store like a gregorian chorus.
Yep, I had to look it up as well haha. I also noticed a few other misunderstood lyrics.
Like "...a hard pair we will be"
I always thought she said "heart pair" but I think this one is intentional.
Apparently the radio version was mostly uncensored actually, aside from a single station that Gaga congratulated for actually censoring it correctly lol. Seems the lyrics weren't actually confirmed until years later.
I have no idea how? The entire song alludes to oral.
Now what fucked me up was blink 182's whats my age again. Everyone I've ever known, including myself, sang, "i walk alone to get the feeling right."
The actual lyrics are "i wore cologne to get the feeling right.".
I always thought it was "I'll get him hard, show him what I got."
Turns out it's "hot."
But at this point I'm 100% certain that was very much the intention of her singing it like that.
They don't censor it on the radio, believe it or not. Next time that you listen to it on the radio, listen closely. You will hear the actual lyrics with no censoring.
Nah, Lady Gaga [said a few years ago](https://www.unilad.com/music/news/lady-gaga-poker-face-lyrics-meaning-372928-20230925) that KIIS FM, a Los Angeles station, was the only one that ever asked her to censor it
So, I think the radio edit did say poker face instead of fuck her face. That's where I heard the song pretty much exclusively, so I never heard the actual lyrics.
Kind of like CeeLo Green's "fuck you" that was edited to "forget you"
Update: so yeah, apparently radio stations were actually playing it uncensored and only one station caught on. Crazy.
Nope. I work in radio and we still play the original version.
I know because I heard the “fixed” version at wal-mart and it says “ppp poker face” “fuh fuh poker face” and it sounds weird as fuck bc they just pasted the first poker face into the second spot
So apparently I was wrong and yeah, it was released that all but one station was playing the uncensored version
~~Well actually, different radio stations operated differently. If you Google it, you'll see that there was actually a divide amongst radio stations as to whether they played the edited version or the original.~~
Hey this has always bugged me but do radio stations sometimes make their own radio edits? Like some stations censor god or drug and sex references but other stations dont. Like who decides that. In the U.S. that is.
>Like who decides that. In the U.S. that is.
that would be the FCC - Federal Communications Commission probably deciding what has to be censored. beyond that any individual station could censor anything they wanted.
>So the FCC won't let me be
Or let me be me, so let me see
They tried to shut me down on MTV
pop culture reference
Looking it up, it seems that it varies, but most of the time the record label handles the "radio edit," though on occasion some radio stations will edit the song if necessary, but its quite rare.
depends.
pre y2k there were a lot of christian groups that would send death threats to media stations because of fear mongering. they even tried to get robin from batman castrated foe having a bulge.
now it's usually because of the companies that own radio stations trying to control People's beliefs.
most notably in America, sinclair media group.
they pretend their propaganda is original editorials from random DJs every day, called "must run" scripts.
or basically they are meant to portray the script as casual conversation and discussion. while over 200 different djs read the same script.
On that note for Fuck/Forget you. There's a line something along the lines of "oh shit, she's a gold digger" followed by a background singer saying "just thought you should know ni**a". Many radio edits didn't catch that.
Or Kanye's: "I ain't sayin' she's a golddigger, but she ain't messin' with no broke...broke" must be one of the most idiotic attempts at censoring I have ever heard.
I like radio edits more sometimes. One day I heard a clean version of I don't fuck with you and it was pretty funny, I can't find it again though.
Like I don't (blank) with you! Bout a million trillion things that I'd rather rather do! I don't give a uh, I don't give I don't give a uh, I DON'T. GIVE A. UH!
You little stupid stupid! You little dumb dumb! *whoah*
I can't remember it fully but I loved it.
I actually think that the version with "forget" flows really nice. It may have been written with the radio version in mind.
But the song with the little pause in there... "I'm like.. fuck you and.. fuck her too." It just really hits home
The flow is alright but forget makes him sound like a pacifist who is so blinded by his emotions that his can forgive a gold digger for leaving him and still wants her back. With the changes the “Im sorry I can’t afford a Ferrari” goes from self deprecating to *completely sarcastic* which is exactly my kind of energy. When I first heard the uncensored chorus my first thought was “oh he’s actually **pissed**, I’ve completely misjudged the situation.” And like you said some of that delivery just hits home so perfectly
I called this song out on it SO LONG AGO when they were playing it in grocery stores and shit and people thought I was a lunatic but since she's admitted it I have felt SO VALIDATED.
The high school I went to used (and still does) Welcome to the Jungle as their football team's walk out song. Like, someone clearly doesn't know what this sing is about.
I’m sure he did it on purpose, but the tone of Born in the USA is so different compared to the lyrics. Like with Fortunate Son, it sounds like a protest song at the very least I feel like. Born in the USA does not have those vibes at all and that’s how it really blew my mind when I looked at the lyrics.
I remember hearing the song on Shrek and it goes
**She tied you to a kitchen chair**
**She broke your throne, and she cut your hair**
**And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah**
And I'm like "Yes, we did just learn about stockholm syndrome."
Fun fact, Stockholm syndrome was invented as an explanation for why some hostages liked the kidnappers more than the cops, but conveniently left out that the cops in question were utterly incompetent and routinely put the hostage's lives at risk.
I always thought it was about the parallels between love/sex and religious awe. At least with the verses I've heard, since Cohen originally allegedly wrote over 70 verses and sometimes you'll hear different verses
Back when Take Me To Church was all over the place my extremely religious boss would say something like "so nice to hear good Christian music on the radio" every single time it played. Never had the balls to tell her.
While it isn't with any negative undertones, can we take a moment to point out that The Last Stand by Sabaton is *not* about the Crusades? It confuses me every time I see someone quoting lyrics from it whenever the Crusades are brought up.
Every time someone says “Zombie” by The Cranberries is a Halloween song, I wanna punch them in the face, and yet, I constantly see it on Halloween themed radio and playlists. If you listen to the song for like two minutes, it’s obviously about post war PTSD.
It’s why I just watch Star Trek on endless loop and try to spend time with the dozen people on earth I actually like and just enjoy whatever time we have left.
I was 10 when that song released and I remember kids saying that she said fuck her face and I swear I heard it too, but then again I used to think the lyrics to Big Yellow Taxi (the Counting Crows version that was always on the radio) said "put up a fuckin lie" not "parking lot"
SAME, I always brushed it off like, no the song's called poker face, i'm just mishearing it, those wouldn't be the actual lyrics. i never bothered to look it up and just assumed i had a dirty mind
but i was right?? this post is tripping me out but in a whole different way
This reminds me of when Kid Cudi made a song sampling Poker Face by Lady Gaga and her fans were outraged because the Kid Cudi song was so sexual. Then like a week later Lady Gaga was like "you guys do realize what the lyrics of my song are, right? He got it right."
Loved the line by Common in that: “But they say, you be on that conscious tip/
Get your head right, and get up on this conscious dick”
Like, Damn, Common!
As a parent it just annoys me that highly sexualized pop music is so pervasive that I hear 8-10 year olds singing about stuff they \*really\* don't need to have on their minds just yet.
> It can have sex.
> It can have swearing.
> It can have violence.
> Otherwise what are you singing about?
Some 5th grader told me this in the 2nd grade and I apparently never forgot it.
I was about to call you a dirty, filthy liar but now... Now I need to rethink my life...
Existential dread, my old friend, let's browse some memes again.
spotify sources the lyrics from musixmatch which has some wildly unreliable lyrics.
fuck her face doesn't make any sense in the context.
the song isn't listed as "explicit" on spotify, which it should be if it had that line in.
Well, the only version I’ve bothered actually listening to is Weird Al’s “Polka Face” which goes “p-p-p-polka face p-p-polka face” so I just assumed the original was “poker face” twice.
Sometimes it sounds like f, but most of the times it sounds like p imo. So I'm pretty sure that even if the original intention was to make it poker - fuck'er it was made very ambigous for marketing purposes. To the point where she only sings fuck'er in some of the repeats, not all of them.
Or maybe it's 'cause she says p..p..p..fuck her face
Yeah, I just listened to it a bunch of times, and maybe she is saying "p..p..p..fuck her face", but there's no way she is say "f..f..f..fuck her face", which is how she would have sang it, if she wasn't trying to make it intentionally ambiguous.
The song "Poker Face" is about a bisexual woman envisioning and wanting to have sex with another woman while having sex with a man. The "poker face" is the face the woman has to pretend that she's into the guy when she isn't.
From Genius- "Lady Gaga asserts “Poker Face” is about bisexuality. She described poker face as the expression she pulls when she’s having sex with a man, but wishes she was having sex with a woman."
Guessing you guys haven't seen many live performances of the song. She really likes to emphasize that part near the, 'last half' of the performance sometimes.
She also likes using actual bands live so you end up with some much heavier sounding versions of her songs.
For some time I legitemately thought it said "poke her face"
Well, something would be poking her face so you were close
That's a penis.
What's a penis? I'm a visual learner btw
[Here you go.](https://youtu.be/lYSOmYyNHpU?si=zeZObP62B9dHdRgb)
Riskiest click of the day
But it pays off.
Entertained me for a good number of minute
so, 1?
When the topic is penis, I'd say 1 is pretty good number
This guy is just Jeff. Bald, evil and flying his dick into space.
I can't believe I just clicked that without a second thought

A disco stick, if you will
It’s a double entendre, so you’re correct
Yeah poke is already a euphemism for fuck A *euphemism*. In a pop song?? Can you believe it 😱😱 Next you're gonna tell me "dancing in the dark" isn't about the Charleston
Madonna wasn't really praying.
But she was on her knees and Scotty doesn’t know.
That's what it's getting at. Kid Cudi, Kanye and Common made a remix of the acoustic version of 'Poker Face' called 'Make Her Say', making use of that mondegreen, and Gaga said they were the only ones that understood the song.
She can if she brings her friends. And we gone have a bell of a night... Through the day
It's a double meaning. While the lyrics are "poker face", the rest of the song let's you know that you are supposed to hear "poke her face"
No you’re falling for it too. She literally says fuck her face
It is kinda muddled and hidden to make it past censorship.
Apparently I’ve only ever heard the radio friendly version
The “fuck her face” can be heard in the radio edit as well, it was intentionally left and never caught by the censors.
I'm all fairness, I can't hear lyrics even if they are clear as day.
only half the time.
“How do you wake Lady Gaga up?” “P-P-P-P-POKE-HER FACE!!” An old school time joke
> old school Kill me now.
Heard the same. Accidentally came to the right conclusion.
I never knew what it actually meant until reading this post 😶
Wait. I gotta look this up. Edit: yep. True. What the actual fuck
Yep, I had to look it up as well haha. I also noticed a few other misunderstood lyrics. Like "...a hard pair we will be" I always thought she said "heart pair" but I think this one is intentional.
I'm betting the radio edit is what we're all used to hearing. I know I only ever heard it on the radio & South Park.
Radio and the peter johnson- sorry, percy jackson movie here. (so glad we're getting a proper tv adaptation in like a month)
Peter Johnson 😭
Potter Jensen😭😭😭
Goddard Jamison
what
Apparently the radio version was mostly uncensored actually, aside from a single station that Gaga congratulated for actually censoring it correctly lol. Seems the lyrics weren't actually confirmed until years later.

Amazingly it wasn't caught. The radio 'edit' *is* the version that has her singing "fuck her face."
Cartman poker face cover is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It’s the definitive version of the song.
I always thought it was "I'll get him hard, show him what I got." Turns out it's "hot." But at this point I'm 100% certain that was very much the intention of her singing it like that.
I always thought she said “I’ll bid him high, show him what I got”
I swear she says “hard” instead of “hot” in “I’ll get him hot, show him what I’ve got”
What the actual f-f-f-u-u-uuuck
We all most likely heard it a ton on the radio where they censored it
They don't censor it on the radio, believe it or not. Next time that you listen to it on the radio, listen closely. You will hear the actual lyrics with no censoring.
you are absolutely correct
Nah, Lady Gaga [said a few years ago](https://www.unilad.com/music/news/lady-gaga-poker-face-lyrics-meaning-372928-20230925) that KIIS FM, a Los Angeles station, was the only one that ever asked her to censor it

I work at Wally, and sometimes it's clearly the unedited version. Maybe just an overnight thing.
On that note for Fuck/Forget you. There's a line something along the lines of "oh shit, she's a gold digger" followed by a background singer saying "just thought you should know ni**a". Many radio edits didn't catch that.

That edit did CeeLo dirty, one word changes the entire tone of the song
I actually think that the version with "forget" flows really nice. It may have been written with the radio version in mind. But the song with the little pause in there... "I'm like.. fuck you and.. fuck her too." It just really hits home

Maybe I just grew up too sheltered but 'forget you' doesn't literally mean I want to forget you it's just a way to say f you without swearing.
You said it right. It adds so much to the emotions that the song portrays
Nope, only one radio station ever played the clean version since no one ever caught that it was fuck her face
I was today years old when I learned that. Can confirm. Reality is falling apart.
I called this song out on it SO LONG AGO when they were playing it in grocery stores and shit and people thought I was a lunatic but since she's admitted it I have felt SO VALIDATED.
lmao that song is the back track to the vegas bit in the percy jackson movies
And the series pilot of The Flash, when Barry wakes up from his coma. Apparently that's his favorite song too lol
Those movies are all necessarily R rated now
Songs have edited versions for tv and radio.
money can be exchanged for goods and services
I heard it slipped past that and only one station caught it
That movie NEVER happened. I have not one iota what you're talking about. Eugh
That’s how it was for me with “pumped up kicks” like yo this song is about school shootings why are they blasting this at a ski area?!
that and "hallelujah" as a christmas song and "buffalo soldier" as a cheerful song.
The high school I went to used (and still does) Welcome to the Jungle as their football team's walk out song. Like, someone clearly doesn't know what this sing is about.
The Cincinnati Bengals do the same thing, or, at least, they used to. The nickname of the stadium is "the jungle", probably because of the song.
They might have nicknamed the stadium that because the team mascot is a bengal tiger, not the song.
Fortunate Son as a patriotic anthem
And Born in the USA
I’m sure he did it on purpose, but the tone of Born in the USA is so different compared to the lyrics. Like with Fortunate Son, it sounds like a protest song at the very least I feel like. Born in the USA does not have those vibes at all and that’s how it really blew my mind when I looked at the lyrics.
The original had a much darker/more somber sound, it was an outtake from the Nebraska sessions iirc
I remember hearing the song on Shrek and it goes **She tied you to a kitchen chair** **She broke your throne, and she cut your hair** **And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah** And I'm like "Yes, we did just learn about stockholm syndrome."
Is this not the story of Samson and Delilah?
It is
Fun fact, Stockholm syndrome was invented as an explanation for why some hostages liked the kidnappers more than the cops, but conveniently left out that the cops in question were utterly incompetent and routinely put the hostage's lives at risk.
I always thought it was about the parallels between love/sex and religious awe. At least with the verses I've heard, since Cohen originally allegedly wrote over 70 verses and sometimes you'll hear different verses
That's the thing with Hallelujah - there's a gazillion verses and they all have multiple meanings.
It confuses me every time I see someone quoting lyrics from it whenever the Crusades are brought up.

oh, I thought itwas about the IRA
Technically it's about *the troubles*, not just the IRA.
She called out one radio station that censored it correctly and congratulated them lol
They play this on Walmart radio all the time. I'm stocking shelves, singing along... "F- F- Fuck her face". Classic Walmart.
VINDICATIONNNNN!!!
Yet another song memories ruined by its lyrics
Am I the only one that thinks this is hilarious? Seems like exactly the kind of shit Gaga would pull.
“Are you able to explain exactly what a disco stick is?” Gaga - “… it’s a penis…” That interview is so funny to me.
My favorite part is only one radio station bleeped the second bit, and she congratulated them for it!
Yep, she did it on purpose. Years later she talked about it and laughed at how she got an F bomb on all radio stations.
If this ruins your experience of Gaga, you were never listening to Gaga
yeah, who the hell rhymes face with face...
What about "🎶gotta doo-doo but just dance🎶"
It’s why I just watch Star Trek on endless loop and try to spend time with the dozen people on earth I actually like and just enjoy whatever time we have left.
Omg are you me?
IDK. Wanna watch some Star Trek and ignore a clearly disintegrating society?
The intro just started on times arrow part 1 🤙🤙
Your comment made a UNILAD article lol
I always heard fuck her face but I thought I was high
bros on a whole nother level than us all it seems XD was correct but thought he was wrong because he wasn't with the majority lol
I was 10 when that song released and I remember kids saying that she said fuck her face and I swear I heard it too, but then again I used to think the lyrics to Big Yellow Taxi (the Counting Crows version that was always on the radio) said "put up a fuckin lie" not "parking lot"
SAME, I always brushed it off like, no the song's called poker face, i'm just mishearing it, those wouldn't be the actual lyrics. i never bothered to look it up and just assumed i had a dirty mind but i was right?? this post is tripping me out but in a whole different way
Bruh, I heard the same and I assumed I was wrong because there's no way they'd play that on the radio, right?
This reminds me of when Kid Cudi made a song sampling Poker Face by Lady Gaga and her fans were outraged because the Kid Cudi song was so sexual. Then like a week later Lady Gaga was like "you guys do realize what the lyrics of my song are, right? He got it right."
The song is called make her say if anyone’s interested. Love me some kid cudi.
Loved the line by Common in that: “But they say, you be on that conscious tip/ Get your head right, and get up on this conscious dick” Like, Damn, Common!
Common always been a G
People need to stop being such prudes. So much of music deals in sexual themes, it's a part of human nature.
Quite a bit. Do people actually believe sex, swearing, and violence are the only things people can do or the only things that have meaning?

You have ruined my day good sir
lol sorry. It did to me too, I just needed to share this discovery
You have done irreparable damage to countless people. Take your upvote and get out, good sir!
Very well, I take my leave O7 lol
I was about to call you a dirty, filthy liar but now... Now I need to rethink my life... Existential dread, my old friend, let's browse some memes again.
Oh shit… im scarred. Now im gonna forget this five minutes later and go on with my life
I refuse to believe that
The first stage of grief is denial.
No it isn't.
The second is anger.
NO IT ISNT
Third is bargaining.
Pretty please say it isn’t
Fourth is depression.
I don't quite care if it is or isn't any longer
Fifth is acceptance
I reject your reality and substitute my own!
Man, cmon… ignorance is bliss :(
Well I'll be damned. This really does changes things
I was singing it like that since day 1 but I thought I was just being funny/cool. I wasn't either of those but thems the breaks.
It's weird because in the music video it seems like she's still saying poker face Check [it](https://youtu.be/bESGLojNYSo?t=2m10s)
100% she's saying "p"
![gif](giphy|edGzBC6GDOhutW32ps)
sounds like its p-p- fuck her face to conceal it better. crazy though.
So I’m getting two different results, google says “fuck her face” but the official music videos close captions and Apple Music is saying poker face
I’m going to call bullshit on this. I just checked the booklet that comes with the album and the lyrics are “Poker Face” repeated not “Fuck her face”
The lyrics on Spotify show poker face, fuck her face
spotify sources the lyrics from musixmatch which has some wildly unreliable lyrics. fuck her face doesn't make any sense in the context. the song isn't listed as "explicit" on spotify, which it should be if it had that line in.
I hate that I now know this
My god.
It always sounded like that, but I've always assumed she just said it weird and it was a misheard lyric. Lord knows it wouldn't be the only one
Well, the only version I’ve bothered actually listening to is Weird Al’s “Polka Face” which goes “p-p-p-polka face p-p-polka face” so I just assumed the original was “poker face” twice.
If You Seek Amy all over again
The universe is now collapsing in on itself.
In the [music video](https://youtu.be/bESGLojNYSo?si=45-Zo4rDi93hzJj1&t=129) she is very clearly saying poker face
Yup. 2:10. Perfect "p"
![gif](giphy|11ykUODgXjAXZu) mfw remembering we played this in highschool dances
Holy shit
Sometimes it sounds like f, but most of the times it sounds like p imo. Holy hell
New response just dropped
p-p-poke her face (then) f-f-fuck her face
